Jakob Ganslmeier - Lovely Planet. Poland

Edition Cantz 2018 ISBN 9783947563135 Acqn 29490
Pb 20x26cm 92pp 40col ills £13.75

A journey through Poland is a journey through a rich history and into a present that, after a long
period of deprivation, now promises prosperity for many. It is a land of contradictions, shaped by
post-industrial transformation, at the heart of Europe and yet at the outskirts of the EU. Beautifully
renovated medieval cities are intermingled with abandoned ruins from the socialist planned
economy. Ultra-modern urban centres are juxtaposed with poor regions in which horse drawn
carts are still part of the landscape. It is an astonishing country in transition, with much to
discover. Lovely Planet: Poland is a traveller’s guide that blurs the line between fiction and reality.

Considering Finland
Edition Cantz 2018 ISBN 9783947563258 Acqn 29505
Pb 21x15cm 72pp 62ills 57col £12.75

What comes to mind when you think of “Culture from Finland”? Perhaps the diverse music
scene, architecture and design, films made by Kaurismaki, top athletes, a successful education
system and, of course, the sauna? Beyond these, though, Finland has an intriguing art history to
offer. For example, art connoisseurs will recognise Helene Schjerfbeck and Akseli Gallen-Kalleda
as big names. But what do we know about contemporary photography and media art from
Finland? The exhibition “Considering Finland” shows no fewer than 14 positions by Finnish
artists. It is an exciting and multifaceted insight into the Finnish art scene, presented to us by the
curators Barbara Auer and Stefanie Kleinsorge. The show’s focus lies on nature and humankind.
Featuring Kenneth Bamberg, Elina Brotherus, Ilkka Halso, Riitta Ikonen & Karoline Hjorth, Jaakko
Kahilaniemi, Tellervo Kalleinen & Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, Sanna Kannisto, Ville Lenkkeri, Aurora
Reinhard, Anna Reivila, Mikko Rikala, Liu Susiraja, Nestori Syrjala and Pilva Takala.

In her exhibitions Elsa Salonen examines our relationship to nature in a poetic manner. Salonen’s
works emerge out of her artistic interpretation of ancient alchemical knowledge. In her art, she
activates animist rituals and magic practices once believed to have been lost, asking questions
about our relationship to the environment.

Flatland / Abstraction Narratives

Edition Cantz 2017 ISBN 9783942924214 Acqn 29551
Pb 15x30cm 224pp 80ills 50col £29.95

Borrowing its title from a book written in 1884 by Edwin A. Abbott, an allegorical narrative against
dogmatism, with protagonists who are geometric forms, this two-part exhibition brings together
artists from 1960 until today, who draw inspiration from the abstract vocabularies running through
the twentieth century, infiltrating them with narratives. Their activities involve various artist, social
and cultural phenomena, challenging the orthodox readings of abstraction and advocating one of
the most original and paradoxical forms of the return of narrative in contemporary art. Featuring
Guy de Cointet, Liam Gillick, Peter Halley, Sarah Morris, Matt Mullican and many others.
