What Is Right Brain Education?

Right brain education is about helping children develop greater sensitivity,


imagination, and creativity, rather than focusing on academic achievements
alone. Its education principles are based on a sense of one-ness, cooperation,
and love.

Left brain-centered education focuses on confrontation and competition.

According to Professor Shichida (founder of the "Shichida Method") every child


between the ages of zero to three years old are believed to be geniuses. This is
because the child is able to absorb and process information at an amazing rate.

When you want to raise your children differently and effectively, you must
understand how the infant's brain works in those early years.

The most important thing in the beginning of a newborn child’s education is


language, especially vocabulary. The use of flash cards as a tool is very important.
Flash the cards to your child at a fast speed and they will learn very quickly
(lightning speed).

The right brain functions at a high speed, whereas the left brain functions at a low
speed. Both sides of the brain function very differently. So when you input a lot of
information at a very fast speed, you activate the right brain.

In Shichida classes, flash cards are not only used as tools. There are other activities
such as ESP games, image eye play, eye exercises, memory games, picture flash
cards, singing and dancing, storybooks, playing cards, and more being used.

Right Brain Schools

There are many “right brain” schools opening up everywhere. I would like to talk
about the three pioneer and most established right brain schools. They are Glenn
Doman, Shichida Method and Heguru.

Glenn Doman is the pioneer in the right brain education. He is the founder of The
Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential and began pioneering the
field of child brain development in 1940.
He and the institute are known for their groundbreaking work with brain-injured
children and their early development for well children.
Glenn has authored a lot of books and materials that show parents how to tutor
their babies at home.

The Shichida Method schools were founded in October 1978 in Japan and were
also in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand,
Vietnam, Loas, Myanmar, Australia, United States, and Canada. Classes in these
schools are for children ages four months to six years.

Heguru schools or HEGL Inc. was founded in July 1989 in Japan. They are in Japan,
Singapore, Thailand, China, Kuwait, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia currently.

In July 1997, Heguru founded the “Undulate Speed Reading” or “Wave Speed
Reading”. You can send your child to this school from the ages of four months to
twelve years.

How To Teach Your Child?
Before you start teaching you child, the most important thing in right brain
education is the relationship between you and your child.

So, how you view your child is very important.

The child will grow according to how they are being viewed or the image
portrayed by their parent or teacher.

For example, when a child makes a mistake, the parent should never think or say
words like “You are an idiot” or “When this child grows up, he/she will not be
successful”, etc. The child will be what you think and say of him/her.

5 Suggestions On How To View Your


Child

1. Look at the strong points and potential


2. Don’t be a perfectionist
3. Don’t compare! Every child has different strengths
4. Don’t focus on academic achievement
5. Don’t expect immediate results

Now let's take a look at what is being taught in right brain schools. Some of the
terms I use will be similar to those mentioned by established schools.

Energy Ball Exercises
I would also highly recommend that you incorporate Shichida Method's “Make
energy ball” exercises with music.

The “energy ball” exercise is to mentally prepare your child before you teach
them.

The purpose of the energy ball is to get your child to focus their mental energy.

There are 2 videos you should take a look at.

The video shows what the “Power of Intention” can do, which is the same as what
“energy ball” exercise can do.

There may not seem to be any logic this exercise, but bear in mind that this
exercise is specially developed by Shichida.

It is compulsory that this exercise is done in Shichida classes.

Alpha Music
The purpose of Alpha music is to get your child in to a state of relaxation. The right
brain functions best at the alpha wave: semiconscious, in a deep relaxed state.

There are a few ways you can get to that,

1. Taking deep breaths and “making energy ball”. This method is used
by Shichida Method

2. Play “Alpha music”

Alpha music is played as instrumental background music for relaxation, and


playing it before or while your child is learning is ideal.

Image Training (Image Play)
The word “image” means visualization or mental picture.

The training is meant to teach your child (at any age) to learn how to be
imaginative or to create images.

This training is the foundation of all the other image exercises.

If your child is less than 3 years old, you can guide your child to do this. If your
child is 3 years and above, they can achieve this themselves.

To start with these exercises you must -

1. Create a relaxing environment away from distractions

2. Get your child to take a deep breath in and out (3 times)

3. Then you can start with the exercises. Imagine you can see a red ball, if
you can, put up your hand. Okay, now put your hand down. Now, can you
see a green ball? If you can, put up your hand. Great, put your hand down
now.

4. Next, can you see the door to your bedroom? Once you see it, put up your
hand. Okay, open the door and got into your room.

5. Now, when I count backwards from 3, you turn off everything and you are
back in your class.

6. 3,2,1. You may open your eyes. Welcome back!

There are many other creative ways you can do this exercises, like getting your
child to visualize stories from story books as you read to them.

Right brain education teaches your child to see words, pictures, and numbers as
images.

Image Eye Training
This is a form of training where your child is trained in their brain’s ability to capture
and hold an image in the mind.
For example, you can take an orange colored card with a blue circle, triangle or
square and get your child to stare at the card for about 30 seconds, then look at
a white sheet of paper.

What he or she will see is an after image.


Your child will see the colors in reverse. The blue circle will be orange and the
card will be blue in color.
Practice this every day and eventually your child will see the card as the same
color.

You need a lot of practice!


The aim of this training is to develop visualization by allowing the mind to develop
clear mental images and, opening the subconscious of the right brain (creativity,
intuition, and memory).

Eye Exercise
This is an exercise to train the eye muscles to scan up and down, left and right,
and in all sorts of direction.

This is to prepare your child for photographic memory exercises and speed
reading.

For example, in Figure 1, you can use your finger or a little toy to point to and
move according to the lines given, getting your child to use his/her eyes to follow
your finger or the toy.

Flash Cards

In "Shichida Method" and “Heguru”, they believe flashing cards to children not
only helps them gain knowledge but serves other purposes too.

To activate the right brain

Cards need to be flashed at a high speed. It is important because it gives your


child instant memory. Normally every child would learn with his left brain, but
when information is given at high speed, the right brain's memory is activated
and it will grow.

The right brain and left brain will be connected

When flashing cards, you will show the pictures and at the same time say the
words on the cards. The images or pictures will be processed by the right brain.
The words or language are processed by the left brain. As a result, the child will
learn new words through the activation of the left brain.

After understanding the purpose of the flash cards, you also must know how to
use them. When you flash to your child, try to flash for less than one second per
card.

Flash as many as you can per session, and do it two to three times per day. You
can start with at least 100 cards in the first month and gradually increase up to
1000 cards.

Make sure you have as much variety as possible. Do not repeat the same set of
cards in one sitting.

Just in case your child cannot sit through the session, you can take a short break
and then continue flashing.

There are many types you can consider using, like basic shapes and objects,
addition, multiplication, math or multi dots, picture flash cards, and many others.

63 & 65 Day Shichida Math
Program
This math program was created by Professor Makoto Shichida to train your child's
ability to calculate and to help your child to activate the right brain functions. This
program’s exercises only takes one to two minutes a day.

Through practice, your child will find mathematics an easy subject to study.

The “65-Day Math Program” was the original program, but recently Shichida
came out with the “63-Day Math Program”.

This “63-Day Program” is very similar to the “65-Day Program”. The difference is the
“65-Day Program” covers number from 1-100, and the “63-Day Program” is 1-50.

Some Shichida classes practice the “63-Day Program” instead of the “65-Day
Program”.
The “63-Day Program” is the newer programme, and it is the simplified version of
the “65-Day Program”.

When you join the Library, you have the choice to use the “63-Day Math Program”
or the “65-Day Math Program”. If your Shichida class uses the “63-Day Program”,
then use the “63-Day Program”.

All the flashcards in the Library are arranged for you from Day 1 to Day 63.

The program teaches your child to do rapid mental calculation through dot
imaging.

Peg Memory
This is another right brain exercise that helps to develop your child's memory. You
may already be familiar with Peg Memory as it is a common system used to help
recall lists of items.
These exercises are practiced in Heguru classes as part of their right brain
exercises.

Linking Story
The purpose is to train the child to memorize a group of pictures in sequence.

For example, when your child looks at a chart full of pictures, in order to memorize,
he or she will take the first image and link to the other images with a story.
In this exercise, the story used to link the images does not make sense and has
no logic.

Since “the story” has no logic, the left side brain closes. This is because the left
side brain functions based on logic.
For example, if the first picture is a “cow” and the second is “car”. The story could
begin with:

The COW drove a CAR… that looked like a BIRD…


Once your child memorizes at least 50 pictures, he or she will be able to memorize
the pictures in sequence at one glance without the help of words or a story.

Mandala
“Mandala” is translated as a “circle” in a classical Indian language of Sanskrit.

It's not just a circle or a basic shape: it means completeness, and can be seen as
a model for the organizational design of life - a universal chart that reminds us of
our connection to the infinite which spreads out both beyond and within our
bodies and minds.

Mandalas are used as part of right brain education exercises by Shichida Method,
Heguru, and other right brain schools.

These exercises are used as part of “Photographic Memory” exercises.


It is to help your child remember the colors on the Mandala pictures when the
pictures are flashed for 5 seconds.

How to use the Mandala pictures:

First, what you need is two “Mandala” pictures.

One is colored and the other is outlined.

1. First, get your child to relax by taking a few deep breaths and playing some
alpha music.

2. Flash the colored Mandala pictures for 5 seconds or less.

3. Then ask your child to close his/her eyes and ask "*Do you see the color image
with your super eye?"

4. If "Yes", you can ask your child to draw it.

Give your child the outlined Mandala picture and colored pencils. Just ask your
child to draw a stroke of color in each area corresponding to the image he
captured.

It is important to PRACTICE many times in order to succeed.

You must flash fast, because the right brain takes in the entire image at a glance
and forms an 'after image' that the child sees when he closes his eyes.

This capability to see and retain the 'after image' will improve when practiced
over time.

At the beginning, your child may say, "Mommy, I can't see anything!"
Be patient. According to Professor Shichida, the 'after image' will retain for 5
seconds or less initially and gradually build up to 10 seconds or more.

When the 'after image' is retained into a child's mind for more than a minute,
even after seeing an object for only a second, he is said to have developed
“Photographic Memory”.

Speed Reading
There are two types of speed reading.

Right-Brain and Left-Brain speed reading.

For left-brain speed-reading, students are trained to read the words as fast as
they can.

For right-brain speed-reading, students are firstly trained to see “images” (i.e.
Words, pictures, shapes, patterns). They will be able to read and understand at
the same time.

By seeing the words as images, it is possible to read and learn at a super-fast


speed. This is because there is no need to read and understand the words.

For your child to succeed in speed-reading, you must incorporate other right
brain training like flashcards, photographic memory exercises, Mandalas and
more.

Photographic Memory Exercises
These fun exercises can be in the form of games or puzzles.

The whole idea is to get your child to look at pictures as quickly as possible.

Next, your child is supposed to identify the differences between the pictures or
objects. This could be the colour, position of the object, or something else.
This is to train your child’s right brain to learn how to memorize an image seen
only for a moment.

There are a few types of photographic exercises -

1. quantity memory – to determine the number of objects seen


2. photo memory – to remember the pictures or objects flashed to them
3. colour memory – to differentiate and remember colours flashed
4. space memory – to remember the position of the object on a grid or
without a grid
5. flash memory – this exercise is done using flashcards
6. and many others.

The exercises mentioned above are the numerous variations used in order to
keep the exercises interesting to your child.

Advancement
With so much advancement in computer technology, it should make our lives
more efficient and organized.

How does this technology advancement benefit right brain education?

In the past, flash cards have been flashed by parents, but today more are using
e-flash cards, e-books, computer games, and other methods to teach their
children.

The benefit of e-flash cards and e-books are –

1) No worries of storage spaces. Imagine having a library of flash cards and


books in your computer.
2) Teaching your child will be much faster because your flash cards and
books are organized in your computer.
3) When you do flash cards, you can flash at your desired speed to your child.
Try flashing cards for less than 1 second. It’s not easy.
4) Parental bonding between you and your child can still be achieved, even
with the use of technology.
5) Flashing speed can be faster and more consistent than doing it manually.
That’s the reason HEGURU schools introduced a video based “Super Flash
Card” in to their classroom.

In right brain education, parental bonding is very important.

You have to make sure the technology advancement is here to assist you and
not to take over your job as a parent.

Conclusion

What do parents need to know?

Classes conducted by the Shichida Method, Heguru, and other right brain
schools are normally held once a week.
And what is being taught in the classes, may vary from different schools or
country.

Most importantly, parents play the biggest part in right brain


education and you could say education in general.

What can you do as a parent?


You may feel that training your child is beyond your capability. You may believe
that some special knowledge or skill is involved.

Perhaps you feel that because you are not trained as a teacher or do not have
a lot of education yourself, you should leave it to the professionals.

I am here to tell you to relax, because it does not require any special skills you
don't already have or a certificate or higher "education.

You already have the most important attribute to teach your child: your love for
your children and your dedication to helping them live happy, productive lives.

To teach your child, make sure you –

1. Practice, practice, practice

2. Include variation (for example, flash a variety of flash cards and not
always the same cards.)

3. Keep your child relaxed. You can put on some “Alpha music” to get your
child to calm down.

4. Are in a positive mood. When your child is very young, they can feel your
“energy”.

5. Make sure you and your child are having lots of fun!

6. Take a short break when your child is restless and continue later.

Always remember that every child has different strengths, talents, and interests.
Some children like math and some prefer photo memory games. You can still
do all of the exercises done by the right brain schools, but always focus on your
child's strength and talents. Learning is a never-ending journey, make sure your
child feels like learning is FUN.
