Prism & Pyramids

Construct simple prisms and pyramids ACMMG140
Lesson 1: Students are given images and concrete models of 3D prisms and pyramids.
Students describe their characteristics
Lesson 2: Students construct 3D prisms and pyramids (skeletal models). Students describe
their characteristics and re-draw the shape in their books
Lesson 3: Students use isometric paper to practice drawing 3D shapes
Lesson 4: Students learn about 3D Prisms ad pyramids nets and construct these shapes from
paper nets.
Lesson 5: Students participate in a Kahoot quiz to conclude the topic.

Chance & Probability

Describe probabilities using fractions, decimals and percentages ACMSP144
Conduct chance experiments with both small and large numbers of trials using appropriate digital
technologies ACMSP145
Compare observed frequencies across experiments with expected frequencies ACMSP146
Lesson 1: Students recap probability words and put a list of them in order. Students play
Game of Pig – experimental probability
Lesson 2: Students investigate experimental and theoretical probability through playing The
Horse Race. Revise Decimals and fractions with students – turning decimals into
fractions
Lesson 3: Students investigate experimental and theoretical probability through playing
Heads or Tails physically as a class then with coins in partners.
Lesson 4: Students investigate probability using playing cards. Students come up with their
own probability inquiry questions using the cards.
Lesson 5: Students investigate experimental and theoretical probability through playing
Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Data
Interpret and compare a range of data displays, including side-by-side column graphs for two
categorical variables ACMSP147
Lesson 1: Explain qualitative and quantitative data to students. Introduce students to stem
and leaf plot using and interactive online lesson.
Lesson 2: Students do their own stem and leaf plots using two interactive online games in
relation to reaction time.
Lesson 3: Students learn about Measures of centre. Students find the measures of centre
when drawing out a set amount of playing cards.
Lesson 4: Students practice finding the measures of centre using the NBA score board
Lesson 5: Students practice finding the measures of centre using NBA players’ wins.
Lesson 6: Students revise stem and leaf plot when recording the length of at least 15 feet in
their class.
Lesson 7: Students interpret real data through Choose your own Statistics.
Unit Plan SCIENCE
Geological Changes
Sudden geological changes and extreme weather events can affect Earth’s surface ACSSU096

Earthquakes
Lesson 1: Students learn about beneath the earth’s surface through an interactive
presentation from ABC education. Students are two label and draw the layers of
the earth.
Lesson 2: students participate in an investigation, using an egg as a model of the earth.
Students will compare the egg model with the actual earth and its layers.
Students are given a worksheet to work through.
Lesson 3: Students participate in an interactive KWL chart on Earthquakes using Padlet.
Students watch a video on the Christchurch, NZ earthquake disaster and then learn about
tectonic plates.
Lesson 4: Students fill in KWL chart especially the L section. Student begin STEM; Build an
earthquake resistant structure, activity in groups. Students plan and begin to create
Lesson 5: Students continue to create their structures. Group test and present their
structure. Students evaluate.

Tsunamis
Lesson 1: Students participate in an interactive KWL chart on Tsunamis using Padlet.
Students watch 2 YouTube videos on tsunamis and continue adding to the KWL
chart.
Lesson 2: Give students information on Tsunamis and get them to add to the KWL chart
Lesson 3: Students draw different diagrams to represent the formation of a tsunami.

Volcanoes
Lesson 1: Students participate in an interactive KWL chart on Volcanoes using Padlet.
Lesson 2:
Lesson 3:
