1 Derive the fourth order differential equation for bending of a beam column :

2 Derive the deflection equation for a beam column of length ‘l’ on two simple supports and
carrying a single concentrated load ‘Q’ at a distance l/2 from the right end and axial load P.

3 Determine the critical load for a hinged column using energy method. Assume the deflection

function as y  isn . Compare the result with the exact value. (16 Marks)

4 a. Determine the critical load for a hinged column subjected to an axial load by method of
successive approximation. (08 Marks)
b. Determine the buckling load of a column one end hinged and the other end fixed using
Haarman’s method. (08 Marks)

5 Determine the buckling load for the pin jointed frame shown in Fig.Q5. Axial rigidity for
both member is AE = 15. (16 Marks)
