Program : Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Management (PhDEnM)


Course Title : Financial Decisions
Course Code : DEnM 322

I. Course Description: In addition to technical competence, engineering decisions must have economic
justification. Thus, this course deals with discussion of economic effects of decisions, methods for
comparing engineering alternatives using economic criteria, and methods for the management of
projects. It relates engineering decisions to the larger goals of the business and government as decisions
made by design and manufacturing engineers that require the expenditure of capital and affect the
profitability of the organization.

II. Credit: This is a 3-unit course, administered for 3 hours a week which is equivalent to 54 hours or 18
weeks a semester.

III. Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to do the following:

Specifically, they should be able to:


1. Explain the financial aspects of decisions related to engineering projects.
2. Propose solutions for the problem posed for a project and select the best among the
alternatives.
3. Estimate the financial impacts of a project especially with regard to the cash flows provided
by receipts and expenditure over time.
4. Describe how a cash flow can be expressed as a single equivalent measure and evaluated as
to its financial acceptability.
5. Provide the tools to compare alternative solutions with the goal of accepting the best.
6. Spell out the effects of risk on the financial aspects of decisions.
IV. Course Methodology and Requirements
Students, individually or by group, will be assigned to discuss/report on certain topic/s as
enumerated in the herein course outline utilizing appropriate multimedia or visual presentation. Copy of
the papers to be presented should be distributed to the professors and members of the class. After the
presentation, there will be a question and answer portion with the professor serving as
facilitator/moderator. The professor shall provide inputs as the need arises at any given point.

V. System of Grading

The student shall be graded and/or credited according to the following criteria and corresponding
weight:
Final Examination - 40%
Class Participation/Report - 30%
- 30%
Total - 100%
