Tutorial 1
Chapter 1 [No. 1, 10, 22, 57, 59, 68, 71] &
Additional Question

Definition:
1. meter
2. kilogram
3. second (time)
4. Dimension

Conceptual questions:

1. Find the order of magnitude of your age in seconds. (assume 18 years, roughly the age
of current students)
2. Estimate the number of atoms in 1 cm3 of a solid. (Note that the diameter of an atom is
about 10-10 m).
3. Can two vectors of unequal magnitude add up to give the zero vector? Can three
unequal vectors? Under what conditions?

Problems & Solutions: Chapter 1 (Page 25 – 29)

1. The period of a simple pendulum, defined as the time necessary for one complete
oscillation, is measured in time units and is given by

where, is the length of the pendulum and g is the acceleration due to gravity, in units of
length divided by time squared. Show that this equation is dimensionally consistent. (You
might want to check the formula using your keys at the end of a string and a stopwatch.)

10. Use your calculator to determine (√8)3 to three significant figures in two ways:
(a) Find √8 to four significant figures; then cube this number and round to three
significant figures.
(b) Find √8 to three significant figures; then cube this number and round to three
significant figures.
(c) Which answer is more accurate? Explain.

22. Find the height or length of these natural wonders in kilometers, meters, and
centimeters:
(a) The Optymistychna cave system near Korolivka, Ukraine, with a length of 147 miles.
(b) Angel Falls in Venezuela, the world’s highest waterfall with a height of 3212 ft.
(c) Mount Everest, on the border of Nepal and China, the world’s highest mountain with
a height of 29035 ft.
(d) The Yarlung Tsangpoo Canyon in Tibet, China, with a maximum depth of 19714 ft.

57. Vector A is 3.00 units in length and points along the positive x-axis. Vector B is 4.00
units in length and points along the negative y-axis. Use graphical methods to find the
magnitude and direction of the vectors;
(a) A + B
(b) A – B

59. A roller coaster moves 200 ft horizontally and then rises 135 ft at an angle of 30.0°
above the horizontal. Next, it travels 135 ft at an angle of 40.0° below the horizontal.
Use graphical techniques to find the roller coasters displacement from its starting point
to the end of this movement.

68. A map of South Korea suggests that Daegu is 155 km in a direction 22.5 o north of east
from Gwangju. The same map shows that Seoul is 203 km in a direction 36.0 o west of
north from Daegu. Figure shows the location of these three cities. Modelling the Earth
as flat, use this information to find the displacement from Gwangju to Seoul.

Gwangju 22.5o

71. A commuter airplane starts from an airport and takes the route shown in Figure P3.71.
The plane first flies to city A, located 175 km away in a direction 30.0° north of east.
Next, it flies for 150 km 20.0° west of north, to city B. Finally, the plane flies 190 km due
west, to city C. Find the location of city C relative to the location of the starting point.

Additional Question

1. a) i. Define a vector quantity

1
ii. Show that x=x 0 +v 0 t+ α t 2 is dimensionally consistent. The quantities
2
x and x 0 are distances, v 0 is a velocity, and α is acceleration.

b) Given two vectors ⃗

A =5 x^ +3 ^y and ⃗
B =4 ^x −2 ^y . Calculate the vector of
1⃗
( ⃗
A + B ¿+(3 ⃗
A−⃗B)
