Introduction

Background of the Study

Android cellular phones are smartphones running the Android Operating System. A

typical android cellular phone is a smart phone with a touchscreen interface, multiple

connectivity options and internet browsing capabilities, supposed for video playback and a

camera. Android cellular phones are widely used by people for any purposes. Android cellular

phones are used for accessing information from the Internet which is why many people use

Android cellular phones in different aspects, through this, they gain more knowledge regarding

such aspects (European Scientific Journal, 2016)

On the other hand, English speaking ability is an ability for students to articulate the

words using English language. This ability can measure one's degree in speaking. Researchers

have discovered that the use of Android cellular phones in schools contribute to the performance

of the students (European Scientific Journal, 2016).

The researchers came up with this study since even students on higher age still erred the

grammars and usage of words during speaking, including lame oral expression because they can't

find the good way to speak out their opinions, especially in English. The long-term exposure and

usage of Android cellular phones might have an effect on their ability.

Previous studies were usually evaluating the effects of using Android cellular phones

after a short period of time. In this study, we will evaluate the effects of long-term exposure and

usage of Android cellular phones in order to arrive a more accurate and plausible result. Aside

from that, previous studies measured the effects of the whole performance of students which
provide a variety of aspects. However, in this study, it ensured that English speaking ability is the

main focus.

Hence, it will take a long process to gather data by a critical mechanism in order to

receive results from the respondents with whole honestly and accuracy regarding their previous

status of speaking before their exposure to Android cellular phones. This will also include in

following the criteria and systematical process of gathering.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effects of Android cellular phone towards the English

speaking ability of the Grade 12-STEM and Grade 12-ABM students of Maasin City National

Senior High School.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the degree of Android cellular phone usage of the respondents?

2. What type of applications do the respondents use in their android cellular phones?

3. What is the respondents' status in terms of speaking in English?

4. What is the significant difference of students' English speaking ability before and during

the use of Android cellular phones?


Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to the following:

Teachers- They will be aware about the reasons behind their students' status in English

speaking which will also be applied to their children.

Parents- Parents will realize how Android cellular phones affect their children's English

speaking ability. This study recommends on setting sufficient or limited time allotment for

Android cellular usage to their children.

Scope and Delimitation

This study only involves the Grade 12-STEM and Grade 12- ABM students of Maasin

City National Senior High School who were enrolled on the first semester of the school year

2019-2020. The Grade 12-STEM and Grade 12-ABM students were selected since they are

currently taking up English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) subject. From each

class, students having Android cellular phones were selected to fill out checkboxes as basis of the

study.
