Day to Day Plan
Monday
I’ll start off by asking the students a few questions. Have any of you heard of Cuba before? Have
any of you been to Cuba? Does anyone have family from Cuba? Then we will talk about their
answers for a few as a class discussion.
Then I will introduce the book of the week, which is Where the Flame Trees Bloom. We will
discuss a bit about the author and what her book is about! As a class we will take a vote to pick
which short story we want to hear about first.
Tuesday
I will start the lesson by reminding the students the titles of the two short stories we voted on to
read first. They will then pull out their multicultural notebooks and write a guess about what they
believe the stories will be about based on their titles.
As a class we will discuss our predictions and then begin reading our two short stories for the
day. After each story I will talk with the students about their thoughts on what we just read and
have them write down their answers to a few questions.
Such as
Were there any similarities to your life within the story from Almas? Differences?
Was your prediction based on the title correct? Or, your prediction completely wrong?
What was your favorite part?
Wednesday
We will read our next two stories and follow the same layout as Tuesday for the rest of the
lesson plan.
Thursday
We will have time to fit in one more of the short stories. For any student who wants to take home
the book to finish the rest will be able to rent one of the 2 student copies I have in my classroom
library.
The class will then bring out their white boards and their expo markers to vote on what they
would like to learn about Cuba and the traditions it has that might not have been in the book.
I will give options to things that I already have some information on such as the natural
resources, national holidays and traditions, traditional food and social customs.
Friday
Today we will spend time learning more about the topics the students voted on yesterday. Stat by
going over an interactive PowerPoint that includes videos of traditional dancing, pictures of the
fashion, information about the wonderful and diverse group of people.
The students will have the option to pick from three choices of Cuban themed coloring pages that
have facts about the thing they are coloring on it.
