Executive Summary

In the modern business world, it is always a field full of competition and challenges as a
result of local and international businesses trying to outdone each other with their
business strategies, products and services. Global awareness has become a key element to
successful businesses and product design due to factors like Objectives; Tolerance of
cultural differences; knowledge of different cultures, history of successful new products,
world market potential and global economic, social and political trends. This is why
Allianz Innovation Pte Ltd is formed. It is an innovative, efficient engineering and
automation company providing innovative product design, product/design customization
and manufacturing solutions, to achieve competitive advantages in the globalized and
borderless markets in the 21st century. This proposal prepared by Allianz Innovation, is
to introduce the company’s latest product, the Double Tier Bicycle Rack, also known as
“Allianz D2”. Research of the Double Tier Bicycle Rack was prepared and we have
gathered analysis of the market locally and internationally. We have ascertained all the
relevant details and information before the developed of this new product. It took four
months to firm up and validate this new product. With this proposal we will be
documenting the details into a report. Allianz D2 is a new creation which was created and
modified to allow provider to save up land spaces for cyclist who are parking their bike at
provider premises e.g. MRT stations. It is the most creative idea ever that can secure two
bikes onto a rack. By placing the bikes front wheel into the shaped holder, and then
laying the rear wheel into the small tray, all that is left to do is put the locks around the
wheels and secure it to the rack. Your bike is going nowhere. And there is nothing to rub
your bikes frame to cause any damage to your bikes paint. It can even used by a road
bike, and mountain bike on the Allianz D2 with no issues. In order to withstand wearing
and tearing Allianz D2 will be mainly built up with steel and powder coated which is also
weather proof. Allianz D2 will be an excellent selling item as it has been design to have
the ability to hold and secure two bicycles in a stand at one time. In addition users can
easily lift the doubled deck rack, especially children and women. Different add-ons and
design/edition variations can make it a viable product/engine all the way through the
years to come, if not fifteen to twenty years. It can also be used in factories and HDB
blocks. The targeted consumer of this product will be mainly focused on government
authority/departments e.g. LTA (Land Transport Authority), Town council or HDB etc.
which is a substantial amount of purchaser in our local market to serve the populations.
Introduction With the increasing number of vehicles on the road and the world urging
people to go green to solve the environmental issue, cycling is fast becoming an
economical way to travel around in Singapore apart from motorcycles which emit
exhaust pollution, and cycling is also a form of exercise. People tend to cycle to work or
to MRT stations and they will need to find lot or place to lock their bicycles. In Singapore
cyclist will park and lock their bicycles to the allocated bicycle stands that are available.
But due to the fact that not all work places or MRT Stations have bicycle allocated stands
and some which have very limited in the bicycle lots provided, they tend to park and lock
their bicycles around the pedestrian railings, nearby bus stops or even trees. This will
result in obstruction and even safety to pedestrians, or at times, vehicles. Traditional
bicycle racks can only hold bicycles in horizontal direction, meaning from left to right.
Cyclists are often heard complaining insufficient space to park their bicycles. Some even
made complains that bicycles were lost due to the fact that too many bicycles are
squeezed together at a particular location. Some bicycle stand which had been installed
for long period of time had already rusted or given way. This is due to weathering and
tearing, adding to that no one attends or maintains these entire bicycle stands which are
exposed to rain and shine. Therefore Allianz D2 is created with safely securing can be a
high investment in a bicycle has become an important community concern and saving up
land spaces. This security issue, when provided, can help encourage bike riding. These
innovative and artistic series of Allianz D2 bicycles racks have been engineered to bring
cyclist a complete line of new products that meet modern bike parking and bike security
needs as well as add an artistic sense to a utilitarian product. These bike racks are
architecturally distinctive and offer high bike security and protection from theft. All these
bike racks permit both the bike tire and frame to be secured using u-style normal bicycle
locks. These bike racks are easy to install and use, and have options no other bike rack
offers. Allianz D2 will definitely give cyclist more flexibility, choice and value than any
other bicycle stand.

will quickly realize the wealth of convenience that can be stack into a neat, orderly rack.

Expected Outcome

The following document will be produce upon the completion of Industrial Business
Project:
1. A written report containing a full description of the requirements, design and
evaluation of the product – Double Tier Bicycle Rack “Allianz D2”.

2. A detail mechanical drawings to explain the full assembly of the product

3. A user manual to show user how to load the bicycle to the upper rack.

Additionally, our final product will be present to the project supervisor before the due
date of the industrial business project. The Double Tier Bicycle Rack’s demonstrations
have to hold at outdoor due it overall size. Design Overview The below drawing is a brief
overview on how the final dual tier bicycle rack would look like.

Scope and Limitations

This project will involve the fabrication of the mechanical part and selections of an
appropriate hydraulic component for the bicycle rack. All measurement needs to be
carefully taken into consideration while designing the product in order to cater for
different bicycle size.

Our group aims to install this rack in all locations of Singapore; the cost for the product
should be economical. In order to achieve this, the mechanical parts will send to China
for fabrications. This indeed help us on cost saving. The product will also send for quality
and safety test to ensure users’ safety. Proper quality assurance documents will be
included to support our design.

We are estimating the product to be used at all locations in Singapore by Q1 of 2010. We

also plan to recommend it to others developing countries by end of 2010. The life cycle
of the dual bicycle rack system should have a designed life of 10 years - which is the
period for the current round of contracts.
Research Methodology

Our group will organize interviews with the QA manager and technicians that will be
carry out by a structured interviews, with most of the questions are pre-prepared.

We will also be conducting a market surveys by giving out questionnaires to the public to
ask for their opinion of this product in order to satisfy users need. We need to get the
technical specification for our product to determine if correct components and materials
were used.

We may also source for the origin supplier of component or metal who provide these
parts to the shop or company. We can source by searching through email, phone call, and
catalogue or by recommendations. In this way, the price for the material will be cheaper
if we get from direct supplier.

Our first approach is to find out the type of bicycle racks that are currently used in
Singapore. With the findings, we will obtain their individual advantage and input it into
our design. With one of our group member who is specialized in using AutoCAD to
drawn out the ideal bicycle rack. Our group also needs to do some research on the
statistical techniques used in QA. All information will be able to obtain from library and
internet.

Project Evaluation

We are using the log book to record each progress of our research. This is to enable any
team members to input any details or information which can be trace back if any
problems encountered along the way. We will evaluate the result from the questionnaire
collected to find out what exactly management and customers think of our product and
try to tailor to their needs. We will also need to do research on current market trend to
find out the demand of this product. Subsequently, we need to determine our
manufacturing cost and time frame to produce the product.

Risk Analysis and Contingency Planning

In business today, our world will always involves some kind of risk: new competitors
appear, customer habits change, and factors outside our control could delay in our
project. With careful risk analysis and management, we can facilitate to assess these risks
and decide on the kind of remedial actions to implement and to minimize disruptions to
the project. This will also help our company to decide whether the strategies implemented
could be use to control risk are cost-effective.

Below are the risk analyses to identify threats that our company may faced. Threats may
be:
1. Human - Selected manufacturer tend to have engage in business crisis which resulted
in closure of business. This will affect our company in facing production loss.
Sourcing for more manufacturers before production start can solve such problem.
Disagreement on ideas during planning stages among team members. Identify the
problems that link to the disagreement.

2. Operational - Supplier failed to deliver materials on time that will lead to

production line down situation. It will also result in meeting customer’s product delivery
timeline. By working closely with manufacturer involved and obtaining a detail
production Gantt chart. We can greatly reduce the risk of shortage of material and avoid
any delay in material delivery.

3. Reputational – Our Company’s reputation will be tarnished if we missed our

customer delivery date. This will result in losing of business partner or even damaging
our reputation in the market. In this case, this will greatly affect employee’s confidence
and sale. Delivery of products has to plan in advance to reduce and eliminate any late
delivery.

4. Project – Improper planning of project that can lead to cost over-runs, e, g:

insufficient of materials or unnecessary process which can lead to period of production
being delay. Meticulous planning is to be emphasize together with project management
is to prevent project over-run.

5. Financial –with material and labor cost rising sharply due to economic inflation
production cost. This may cause hindrance of cash flow which can result from business
failure. Therefore, selection of manufacturing countries like China or Vietnam can cut
down company cost of production.

6. Technical – Quality failure can be resulted from poor quality control. Enforcement
of total quality management in manufacturer as required, e.g.: Implementation of
Statistical Process control and Kaizen 5S process.

7. Political – As our product target mostly on government sector, e.g: LTA, MRT,etc.
There will be a lot of government policy to abide by. There will be opinion and
comments from the public. Research and survey to cater to public needs. By
familiarizing of the government policy and changes in advance will greatly aids
company to meet government standard.

8. Others – our company will also implement Porter's Five Forces analysis
to help and identify risks arises. With introducing risk analysis and having contingency
plans that can allow us to scrutinize the risks that our organization will face. We based
on a structured approach to think through threats, followed by an evaluation of the
probability and cost of events occurring. As such, it forms the basis for risk management
and crisis prevention. We can emphasis on cost effectiveness through risk analysis
management involves in adapting the use of existing resources, contingency planning
and good use of new resources.
Resources

For this project, we are using the software to aid in our product development:-

1. AutoCAD 2. Microsoft Excel (for generating Tables and number data) 3.

Microsoft Words (generate final reports) 4. Microsoft Powerpoint (for presentation)
In addition, our group also needs to source for reliable manufacturer to fabricate our
product. Also we will be accessing web browser to do searching on the internet and to
search electronic libraries. Our group will be going library to find some relevant book on
material specification and characterize for our product.
