URBAN TRANSFORMATION

STRENGTHENING THE TOPIC STRUCTURE

PRE THESIS: STRUCTURE

This chapter will basically discuss the main structure of my Pre Thesis proposal, which consist of these first
four chapters:

1. Background
2. Literature Reviews
3. Methodology
4. Classification of Research Variables

These four chapters will be used to unify and relate the many disparate elements of the discussion into one
comprehensive thesis structure discussing the matters of urban transformation in the city of Bandung, with
specific analysis along the area of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman.

From the discussions from the chapters above, the Pre Thesis proposal will soon be developed into a
complete thesis by adding these chapters in the final semester of study:

5. Analysis and Simulations

6. Conclusion
1. BACKGROUND

Location of Study: Jalan Jenderal Sudirman – Pasar Andir

1.  Why ‘Urban Transformation’?

2.  What makes the study interesting and important?
3.  How relevant does the study contribute to the positive future development of Bandung and its built
environment?
2. LITERATURE REVIEWS

1.  Precedents and previous researches.

2.  Positioning the topic into (i) Theoretical Analysis, and (ii) Site Condition Analysis based on supporting
theories and written ideas from scholars.
3. METHODOLOGY

Location of Study: Jalan Jenderal Sudirman – Pasar Andir

1.  Field research (source for primary data)

2.  Survey research (source for primary data)
3.  Literature studies (source for secondary data)
4.  Develop strategic operations (design methods)*
5.  Develop spatial and strategic interventions (design approaches)*

*Design simulation studies will be develop in Semester 4/ Thesis

THINKING FRAMEWORK

From the four main chapters’ structure of the proposed topic, it is hoped that the frameworks developed will
help in structuring a solid and clear understanding towards the more detail research that are to be conducted.
Many questions while arise while the thesis is being developed such as:

1.  What are the changes/ transformations that are happening?

2.  What are their impact and influences?
3.  Why do they transform?
4.  When do they transform?
5.  How did they transform?
6.  What are the catalysts of the transformations?
7.  Who are involved in the process of transformations?
8.  Does the transformation affect in a big way to the society, environment, politic, economy, history,
geography, culture and such?
9.  What are the transformed elements or programs?

And many more questions that will surprisingly influence, guide, change and compose the whole content
development of this thesis.
