Tower Mounted Amplifier Product Line Installation

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Purpose and intended users of this manual

Purpose
This document is designed to describe the installation procedure for the Dual Tower Mounted
Amplifier from Andrew Corporation, covering all the major frequency bands and applications.

Intended users
The manual is designed for installation technicians with adequate and specific expertise to
perform the installation.

1.2. Scope
The installation instructions provided in this manual refer to tower-mounted and wall-mounted
solutions for the TMA product line. The tower-mounted solution adopted and described in this
manual refers to “band clamp” pole mounting kit only.

1.4. Operators Safety

All operations for the connection of the TMA unit to the base station must be executed in
compliance with the safety instructions provided with the base station.

1.4.1. High Frequency

The base station contains equipment that generates high frequency magnetic fields when
in operation. The relative warnings described below must be followed.

WARNING
HIGH FREQUENCY MAGNETIC FIELDS

The transmitter antenna and the equipment connected directly to

the antenna generate high frequency magnetic fields when in
operation. The high density energy can damage the eyes and
certain tissues of the human body in persons exposed to radiation
near the antenna.

The Station must be shut down when work is performed on the

transmitter antenna. Avoid remaining in the immediate vicinity of
the antenna when the Station is in operation.

1.4.2. ESD (Electro Static Discharge)

An electrostatic discharge on a component at a voltage exceeding 600 volts is sufficient to
damage the component, even if mounted on a board.

WARNING
ELECTRO STATIC DISCHARGES

We recommend you wear the anti--static bracelet connected to

ground via a protective resistance to avoid damaging circuits when
handling printed circuits. Electronic boards must be stored in anti-
static envelopes or inside packages both during transportation and
when in storage.

P002646A
ESD hazard symbol

All electronic components used in base stations are subject to ESD.

Electrostatic discharges at voltage ratings below 4000 volts are not normally detected or perceived in
any other form by the person causing the actual discharges.

For example, the natural movements of a person wearing synthetic clothing may generate electrostatic
voltages exceeding 10 000 V !

Components are damaged by an electrical break in the ultra-thin insulating layer in the integrated circuits
(measuring typically 0.0001 mm). The damage may be serious and cause the immediate function failure
or remain latent and occur later.

1.4.3. High voltage

The base station contains equipment that generates high voltages when in operation.
The relative warnings shown below must be observed.

WARNING
HIGH VOLTAGE

Installation of all power supply cables and units must be performed

by authorised personnel.

Only authorized personnel, with adequate technical training and

expertise on base stations shall be permitted to operate on the
various units. Opening of enclosed units is not allowed.

P002645A

2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

2.1. UNIT Identification

Each unit is provided with a label that identify the Part Number, Revision Number and Serial
Number relevant to the unit. For any compliance, reference should be done to such numbers

Figure 1 – Label description

2.2. Tower Mounted Amplifier - General description

The main feature of the TMA is to filter and amplify the incoming RX signal, transmitted by the
Mobile Station (MS) before the signal is transmitted to the Radio Base Station via the feeder
cable. The TX signal is filtered but not amplified. The Dual TMA unit is made up of two completely
independent Low Noise Amplifiers. In case of failure of one of them the other can continue to
provide service. When both amplifiers are out of order, the complete system shall be changed
or repaired. This TMA is not field repairable.

The TMA must be mounted on a tower or wall, as close as possible to the antenna to achieve the
best system performance.

2.3. TMA installation kit

The TMA can be installed in two different ways, on a tower or on a wall. The TMA is normally
supplied with the installation kit / brackets which are suitable for both types of installation.

3.3. Pole-mounted TMA installation

NOTE: The TMA should be mounted as close as possible to the antenna to ensure
best system performance.

Insert the screw band into the

1 mounting bracket as per fig-
ure.

DTMA Installation Instructions CommScope Proprietary 9

Tower Mounted Amplifier Product Line Installation

Position the TMA close to the pole and near to

the antenna.

Please be sure that the ANT Port faces upwards.

2 Put the screw band around the pole and insert
one terminal side of the screw band into the right
slot on the screw buckle according to the picture

(see chapter 3.3.1. for more detailed instructions)

Put the other terminal side of the screw band

on the external slot (under the screw) of the
screw buckle. 3

Push the screw part of the buckle towards the screw

band to provide preliminary seating of the screw.

Tighten the screw within the buckle using the

screwdriver (tool N° 4 par. 3.2) until the TMA
is strongly fixed to the pole.

Warning: a small torque value could cause the TMA

to move around the pole but too high a torque value
4
could cause the screw band to deform.

The recommended torque value is 3 to 3.5 Nm max.

Repeat these instructions for the second screw band.

3.4. Wall-mounting operations

Position the TMA against the wall at the

point where the unit is to be installed.

Check the alignment using a spirit level

if required.

Drill the holes in the wall. The diameter of

the holes must be sized to the wall anchors
to be used: for reinforced concrete or hollow
bricks, etc.

Holes for “wall mounting”

Insert the “Fischer” (*) into the wall 3

and secure the TMA.

(*) The fixings shall be chosen according to the

wall and to the weight of the unit. Typical values
are 6 to 8 mm (1.4” to 5/16”) diameter screws
(NOT included within the installation kit)

3.5. Connections
split
washer flat washer

Connect the grounding cable to

an eyelet terminal with a diameter
suitable for an M8 screw.
1
The grounding cable is connected to
the TMA by assembling the following
components in the order shown:
- flat washer
- eyelet terminal
- flat washer
- split washer nut eyelet terminal
- nut

Tighten the grounding nut and connect

the other end of the cable to an efficient
grounding point.

Connect the RF cables to the TMA.

There is no priority sequence for the
connection of the cables. It is possible
to connect the antenna cable and then
the Node B cable and vice versa.

14 CommScope Proprietary DTMA Installation Instructions

Tower Mounted Amplifier Product Line Installation

Tighten the RF connectors to the TMA

with a torque wrench. Set the maximum 4
torque value recommended by the
supplier of the 7/16” male connector.

In the case where there is no detailed

instruction from the connector manufacturer
the recommended torque value is 25 – 30 Nm.

Seal the connector end with the sealing

tape to avoid risk of water entering the
connector.
5

Position the antenna cable in a way to avoid

water running along the cable towards the
connector end (drip loop).

5. OPERATING TEST AND MAINTENANCE

5.1. Visual inspection

We recommend a visual inspection of the unit before supplying power to the equipment to avoid
undesirable damage to the equipment due to mistakes made during the installation operations.

Check that:

1- installation has been executed in compliance with the instructions.

2- All the connectors to the TMA, to the antenna and to the base station panel have been
correctly connected and tightened.
3- Record the observations concerning possible installation mistakes identified and trans-
mit the observations to the personnel in charge of installation.

5.2. Operating test

Switch the main power switch to “on” and supply power to the system. Verify there is no alarm sig-
nal on the base station.

5.3. Routine Maintenance

The TMA equipment does not require routine maintenance.

5.4. Types of failures and suggested solutions

This paragraph lists possible failures and the actions to be taken to remedy the situation. The
TMA unit is not equipped with LEDs or other alarm systems, therefore the detection of a mal
function is provided via the equipment connected to the TMA unit (i.e. PDU) located inside the
Base Station panel.
