Intro to Mechanism Simulation
 Input driving loads, friction characteristics, and dynamic
components
 Run dynamic simulation tests to see how a product will work
under real-world conditions
 Optimize strength and weight, identify high-stress areas,
identify and reducing unwanted vibrations, and size motors and
actuators to reduce energy consumption
 Inventor Features:
 Condition definitions (materials, load, etc)
 Point trace (path)
 Graphing
 Animated visualization/videos
 Custom report generation
Mechanism Simulations

 Live demo-1 : Slider Crank

 Live demo-2: Reciprocating Saw
Steps for Mechanism Simulation
1. Open the assembly file

2. Check all the mates and constraints

3. Switch to Dynamic simulation environment from Applications

Tab(2009) or Environment(2011)

4. Calculate Standard joints (automatic) and Insert remaining

joint types (example: for gear meshing)

5. Apply motion, force conditions, etc

6. Generate plots using Output Grapher

Results Comparison
X-Position of the Piston

As seen in the three figures,

the solutions given by
Inventor, SolidWorks, and
MATLAB are very agreeable.

As seen in the three figures, the
solutions given by Inventor is slightly
greater than the analytical solution.

Solidworks is more accurate.

Comparison with SolidWorks

 Features Comparison
 Current User Growth
 Market Share
Features Comparison
 Solidworks is more intuitive as compared to Inventor
 Modeling is easier in Solidworks
 Inventor has a great weakness in applying mates as
direction has to be specified as positive or negative
 SolidWorks gives the direction toggle option for
mating thus easing assembly
 SolidWorks can automatically detect joint types,
whereas you have to specify them in Inventor
 Better animations can be created in Inventor
