Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) What do you understand by yielding, strain - hardening, neck formation and permanent set.
(b) Find the minimum dia. of a steel wire with which a load of 4000 N can be raised so that the
tensile stress in the wire may not exceed 130 N/mm2 calculate the extension of the wire, if it is
3 m long. Take E = 200 GPa.
[6+10]
2. A crane chain having sectional area 650 mm2 carries a load of 12 kN. As it is being lowered at a
uniform rate of 40 m per minute, the chain got jammed suddenly, at which time the length of the
chain unwound was 10 m. Calculate the stress induced in the chain due to sudden stoppage. Neglect
the weight of the chain. Take E = 200 Gpa. [16]
3. (a) Define the “Beam” and the type of action and deformation it undergoes.
(b) Draw the S.F. and B.M. diagram for a simply supported beam of span L m loaded with UDL of
w KN/m. [6+10]
4. Define Neutral axis. Sketch the bending stress distribution across the cross section of a rectangular
beam section 230 × 400 m subjected to 60 KNm moment. [16]
5. Design the cross section for a beam acted upon by a bending moment = 50 KNm. If width of beam
is 200 mm calculate, depth. f = 9 N/mm2 . [16]
6. (a) State the first theorem of the moment area method?
(b) State and prove moment area theorem - 2. [6+10]
7. A cylindrical shell 1.2m long, 200mm internal diameter and 10mm thick is filled with a fluid at
atmospheric pressure. If an additional 3 X 104 mm3 of the fluid is pumped into the cylinder, find the
pressure exerted by the fluid on the wall of the cylinder. Find also the hoop stress induced.
Take E = 2 X 105 N/mm2 , µ = 0.3. [16]
8. A compound steel cylinder has a bore of 80 mm and an outside; diameter of 160 mm, the diameter at the
common surface being 120 mm. Find the radial pressure at the common surface which must be provided
by shrinkage if the resultant maximum hoop tension in the inner cylinder under a superimposed internal
pressure of 60N/mm2 is to be half the value of the maximum hoop tension which would be produced in
the inner cylinder if that cylinder alone were subjected to an internal pressure of 60N/mm2 . Determine
the final hoop tensions at the inner and outer surfaces of both cylinder under the internal pressure of
60N/mm2 and sketch a graph to show the hoop tension varies across the cylinder wall. [16]
