Course Title: Professional Nursing Practice with Children

Course Credits: 3 Credits

Course Description

This course explores the role of the nurse in providing appropriate care of children
experiencing major disease processes in various settings with particular emphasis on the
hospitalized child. The student will learn how to assess growth and developmental stages
of children and apply this knowledge in caring for the child as client. The course also
explores intra-personal and interpersonal responses of the child and family to illnesses.
The student will be challenged to employ critical thinking skills to provide holistic care to
the child and family.

Objectives

After completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the different developmental stages


in children, from various theoretical perspectives, including, but not limited to:
cognitive (Piaget), psychosocial (Erickson) and psychosexual (Freud).
2. Integrate knowledge of appropriate age based assessment and intervention
techniques into the care of children.
3. Assimilate evidence based practice and technology into planning the care of the
hospitalized child.
4. Design age appropriate teaching plan for child and family.

First Paper
Relate a close personal experience you have had as or with a sick child. Perhaps you had
an experience where you were hospitalized as a child and experienced a chronic or acute
illness. If applicable, you may discuss your experience as a parent in such a situation.
What were your expectations of the care givers? How were these expectations met? At
the end of your experience what were your evaluations?
This paper should no more than 3 pages excluding the title page. This paper is due
during the second week of class.
Second Paper
Choose a patient you have taken care of in your clinicals. Describe the child’s cognitive
and sensori-motor developmental stages and relate these to the diagnosis and responses of
the child/family. Describe how these factors determine the most appropriate care for this
child.
Use no fewer than four sources all within the last five years. The paper should be
between 3-5 pages, excluding title page and reference page. The abstract does not need to
be on a separate page. This paper is due _________.

Course Policies
This is an eight week accelerated course. We will be covering quite a bit of material each
week therefore it is imperative that students visit the class page several times weekly and
read and review course materials frequently. Students are expected to have read the
assigned chapters weekly and be prepared to discuss the assigned material on the
discussion board.
