What I read about ASHRAE 62-1989

1. Purpose: to specify min ventilation rate and IAQ which acceptable for
human occupants, to avoid adverse health effect.

2. Scope: all indoor and enclosed spaces that people that may occupy; and
places which can release moisture such as bathroom and swimming pools.

3. Definition:

a. Absorption: 1 substance entering another substance’s inner structure.

b. Adsorption: adhesion (粘附) of a thin film of lq or gas on a solid surface.

c. Air-cleaning system: a device or devices (器具) to reduce the [] of

airborne contaminants such as particulate.

d. Air conditioning: process of treating air to control the air T, humidity,

cleanliness and distribution.

e. Air ventilation: portion of supply air which are outdoor air + retreated
and recirculated IA to maintain the acceptable IAQ.

f. Ventilation: process of supplying and removing air by natural or

mechanical means to and from any space.

4. 2 classification of alternatives procedures to obtain

acceptable IAQ

Ventilation rate IAQ prosedure

procedure
– by controlling known
- Providing and specificable
ventilation air contaminants
*change in space use, contaminants or operation may require re-evaluation of
the design and implementation of needed changes.

System and equipments:

a. when natural ventilation and infiltration is not sufficient, mechanical

ventilation needed.

E conservation purpose + meeting ventilation requirements = E recovery

ventilation system

5. Still not enough to provide adequate control of gaseous contaminants, use

method based on sorption, tailored to deal with special contaminants.
6. Commonly used sorbent is such as activated carbon.

7. Steps of ventilation rates procedure:

a. [] of Contaminants of indoor air do not exceed the table 1 ASHRAE

62-1989

b. If got contaminants out of table 1, refer appendix C – Guidance of

the establishment of air quality criteria for the indoor environment,
ASHRAE 62-1989

c. If after step 1 and 2 still feel that the IAQ is not acceptable, refer to
NIOSH procedures (Reference 21 , 22) * NIOSH manual of analytical
methods

8. Ventilation requirement: IAQ considered acceptable if the required rates of

acceptable outdoor air in table 2 ASHRAE 62/89 are provided for the
occupied spaces, however..

9. Exception:

a. When unusual indoor contaminants present or anticipated, they

shall be collected at the source or IAQ procedure should be taken.

b. Areas of industrial facilities is nor covered here, refer to [Threshold

Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices for 1986-87]

10.Recirculation criteria, ventilation effectiveness – defined by the fraction of

outdoor air delivered to the space that reaches the occupied spaces.

11.IAQ procedure – provides an alternative performance method to the VRP

for achieving acceptable indoor quality; provide direct solution by
restricting the [] of all known contaminants of concern to some specified
acceptable levels. (instead of VRP is indirect solution to the control of
indoor air pollution/contamination. ; its incorporates both quantitative and
subjective evaluation.
