CONCEPT OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Non-Verbal communication can be defined as communicating non-verbally – without words. Often they
express feeling more accurately than the spoken or written language.
It includes apparent behaviors such as facial expressions, eyes, touching, and tone of voice, as well as
less obvious messages such as dress, posture and spatial distance between two or more people.

Lets take an example of TIP of the ICE-BERG

Part of Iceberg in Sea is defined as NON-VERBAL Communication 90 PERCENT

The above diagram shows that only 10 percent of the Iceberg seen as tip above sea level and 90 perrcent
are sink in the sea.

It means we use 10 percent Verbal Communication use in our life and 90 percent of non-verbal
communication.

FACTORS OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION – SET-PATTERN

Following are the factors of non-verbal communication.

1. APPEARANCE

Whether you are speaking to one person face to face or to a group in a meeting. Personal appearance
convey non-verbal stimuli that affect towards your spoken words.

It can be

i. Physical
ii. Psychological
iii. Emotional

i. Physical Appearance
Size, Color, Setting and Texture are part of physical appearance. They convey impression regarding
height, age, nationality, occupation, social and economic level, job status and good or poor judgment
depending on circumstances.

ii. Psychological Appearance

iii. Emotional Appearance


The eyes and face are especially helpful means of communication nonverbally. They can reveal hidden
emotions. Including anger, confusion, enthusiasm, fear, joy, surprise, uncertainty, and others,

2. BODY LANGUAGE

It define as Decorate, Hug.

Included under body language are facial expressions, gestures, posture and movement, smell and touch
and voice and sounds.

The eyes and face are especially helpful means of communication nonverbally. They can reveal hidden
emotions. Including anger, confusion, enthusiasm, fear, joy, surprise, uncertainty, and others, they
also contradict verbal statements.

3. SILENCE
It defines as Lack of Activity, Lack of noise, Extensive respect and dignitary.

Silence consider how you feel when make an oral request that is met with silence or think about the
confusion you feel when your written message generates no response.

4. INTERPERSONAL DISTANCE
It is defined distance between two person.

Effective communication must learn to adapt to both senders and receivers expectations regarding
space. The key to success is to be aware of the differences.

5. TIME
It is defined as the distance between two spoken or unspoken things.

6. CREDIBILITY
It is defined as the manner of Honor and Trust or Dependability.
