Dear Dr. Tribbensee,

We are disappointed and extremely concerned to hear that, after months of attending ABOR meetings and
speaking in the “Call to the Audience” sections (with this upcoming meeting allocating only 10 minutes for
community concerns), the Regents are continuing to ignore our voices and issues of human rights in Arizona.

Since the Regents are not including students in the decisions they make, we quite frankly question whose
interests they serve, given ABOR’s explicit Mission:

“The Arizona Board of regents is committed to ensuring access for qualified residents of Arizona to
undergraduate and graduate institutions; promoting the discovery, application, and dissemination of
new knowledge; extending the benefits of university activities to Arizona’s citizens outside the
university; and maximizing the benefits derived from the state’s investment in education.”

Since ABOR exists to benefit Arizona’s residents and their communities, we believe that ABOR is obligated to
respond to student concerns, especially concerns about human rights issues that impact students, families,
and communities well beyond the university educational system.

As a diverse coalition of students, we will be approaching our university presidents next week in a final effort
to add these student concerns to the ABOR agenda. If ABOR refuses to address human rights violations in
Arizona in its December meetings, we will rise up and demand that our voices be heard.

like the Arizona Board of Regents to consider. Although these individual items will not be on the public
agenda for the December meeting, members of the public may participate in the Call to the Audience at the
beginning of the Board meeting to bring issues of concern to the attention of Regents. Each participant in
the Call to the Audience may speak for up to three minutes. Regents do not respond during the Call to the
Audience but may, as appropriate, ask Board or university staff to follow up after the meeting. The Call to

Dear Arizona Board of Regents,

We are writing to request that the following issues regarding human rights in Arizona be added to the
Arizona Board of Regents official agenda for the December 9 and December 10 meeting:

1. Take a stance on Senate Bill 1070. As a result of this resolution, university

administrations should work with their academic senate and student body to create a statewide
policy of campus sanctuaries that protect students of all races, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation,
gender identity, age, creed, class, national origin and physical ability.

2. Immediately halt the privatization of Arizona’s public universities, including the reversing
the decision to privatize the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.
Privatization of public institutions detrimentally affects students and their communities by rapidly
and unfairly increasing the cost of attendance. Because privatization most impacts students, their
families, and their communities, ABOR should gather state-wide public input before any moves
towards privatization.

3. Restore ABOR’s former commitments to Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) by (a)

unifying standards of socially responsible investing at Arizona universities (b) responding to
student concerns about university ties to corporations that are complicit in human rights violations
(c) ordering Arizona universities to divest from Caterpillar, Motorola, and PetroChina (d) creating
investment screens specific to human rights abuses linked to the US/Mexico border and the
interior of Arizona; the genocide in Sudan; the conflict in the Congo; the occupation of Palestine.

Arizona students are concerned about their lack of voice in the creation and implementation of policies
in Arizona’s universities. We will be attending ABOR’s meetings and hope to see these issues officially
on the agenda and fairly addressed.
