A Primer on the Jeep 258 with Carter BBD & Pulse Air Emission System

Diagnostic Connectors
Diagnostic ConnectorsThe diagnostic connectors are located at the right side of
the battery and are covered by rubber boots to protect from splash. These connec
tors do not provide the more sophisticated serial data like some of the newer ca
rs, but provide voltage test points for most of the key circuits in the computer
system. The connectors themselves are standard Molex 6 and 15-pin types availab
le at any good electronic parts source.

DETAILS
Below are diagrams of the two diagnostic connectors listing which pins do what.
D2 pin 1 is shown as the PCV Shutoff Solenoid, but this was removed from my car
a few years ago in a factory recall and was replaced with a straight-through hos
e.
Those who know how to use a good voltmeter (at least 10 megohms input impedance)
may want to look farther down this page.

More Notes
10 The Thermal Electric Switch should be LO if the air cleaner air temperat
ure is below 65° (nominal). In any case, it should go HI once the engine is warmed
up
11 Once the engine is warmed up and the computer is operating, the stepper
motor signals should continously alternate quickly between HI and LO. This corre
sponds with the movement of the metering pins in the carburetor.
12 The Coolant Temperature switch should be HI until the engine reaches a n
ominal 135°, and then should go LO as the switch closes. On my engine this happens
as the temperature gauge needle has begun to move but is not yet above the "C".
15 The 4" Hg vacuum switch should be HI at idle. It is tied to ported vacuu
m and should go LO as the throttle is gradually opened and the ported vacuum rea
ches 4".
The computer sits inside the car over the heater and is held in place by one Phi
llips screw.
Here is a diagram of the connectors, both on the computer (MCU) and the wire har
ness.
