Lionel Freight Engine and Passenger Engine

Christmas Memory

By: Joe Swisher

In the late 1930s through the 1950s, a Christmas tradition for many boys and their dads (and some girls too),
was to have a train layout (sometimes called a train garden) underneath the Christmas tree. The layout would
vary in size, shape, and detail among families, but most would have operating trains, houses, miniature peo-
ple, farms, bridges, etc. arranged in a fashion to note a village or country scene for the trains to run through.
Each year the train layouts would grow in detail and sometimes in size. The tree and the train layout both
vied for attention when visitors came to your home and you would go from house to house to see their tree
and watch the trains in operation.
I especially liked the train layout and would request money at Christmas so I could buy something for my
layout the day after Christmas. I have been to homes where the layout would take up almost half of the
front room. And yes there were sides you took – you either liked the 2-rail American Flyer model or the 3-
rail Lionel trains. Me, I am a Lionel boy. Believe it or not my wife had a Lionel passenger train to go with
her brother’s freight train. Today, we both have our trains and some great memories of Christmas. I won-
der what traditions will the youth of today have of their Christmas holidays? I hope it is as good as mine.

Meet the Council Members of The City of Aberdeen!

Councilman Bruce Edward Garner was born in Quincy, Massachu-
setts in 1947, and raised in coastal North Carolina. While employed
at Cherry Point Marine Corp Air Station, North Carolina, he entered
the U.S. Army in 1969. While stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia, he
met and married his wife, Harford County native, Joanne Sills. Af-
ter receiving his honorable discharge with commendation from the
U.S. Army, Councilman Garner and his wife moved to Aberdeen in
1973. There they raised their children: A. Bruce Garner II, Amy
Garner-Lindecamp, and Jennifer Garner. All attended Aberdeen
public schools. Councilman Garner was employed by one of the
largest manufactured housing retailers in the north east region in
1974. He was the General Manager for that company, overseeing
eight retail locations in three different states for over ten years.
Councilman and his wife have successfully owned and operated Bayside Homes Ltd. in Havre de
Grace, Maryland for over twenty-five years. Councilman has served the board of directors for the
Manufactured Housing Institute of Maryland for six years, and was elected the President of the
Manufactured Housing Institute of Maryland the last two years. He is currently on the board of di-
rectors for the National Buyers Group, a privately owned stock company in Syracuse, New York.
Councilman Garner is serving his second appointment on the Harford County Building Code Board
of Appeals. He is also the current liaison for Parks and Recreation, and the Ripken Stadium Manage-
ment Board for the City of Aberdeen. Councilman Garner has been a proud member of the Ameri-
can Legion for over thirty years. He has called Aberdeen his home for over thirty-five years. Coun-
cilman Garner and his wife Joanne have lived on Mount Royal Avenue for over twenty-five years.

Christmas Yard Decorating Ideas
Christmas is the time to use your creativity and decorate your house inside and outside. It is the time of
year when yards can be transformed into a place fit for a party. When you convert the yard of your home
into a festive place, you need to think about the following:
• Decide on your theme – there are a lot of themes that you can use to decorate your yard with. You
can choose to decorate your yard in traditional colors of gold, green, and red or the winter theme,
complete with a snowman and snowflakes. My husband and I rotate each year from the winter
theme to a colorful theme. This year is the winter theme, the Christmas lights are white and the
snowman and sled are adorned with holiday red ribbons to match the wreaths on the windows and
doors.
• Keep your essentials ready – before you start with the yard decorations make sure that all your
Christmas lights are working properly. I have learned that fuses are easy to replace so instead of
throwing out the lights check the fuses first.
