Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care

Dear Colleagues,

From our conversations with clinicians over the past 16 years, we have come to understand how difficult
it is to juggle the responsibilities of your busy practice—from patient care and medical challenges to
budgets and administration—while staying up-to-date on the latest developments, treatments, and
practices in health care. We have listened to your wonderful suggestions and have developed what we
believe is an exceptional program in Houston. We’re delighted to invite you to Current Clinical Issues in
Primary Care, presented at the Pri-Med® Southwest Conference & Exhibition.

This exciting 2-day primary care-focused CME course, developed by the distinguished faculty of
Harvard Medical School and Baylor College of Medicine, features more than 35 lectures covering disease
states, emerging research, public health, and policy issues.

You’ll have an opportunity to hear world-renowned speakers such as John D. Goodson, MD, FACP, who
will present, “The Promise of Primary Care” and Paul Klotman, MD, who will present "Improving Value in
Healthcare: A Partnership Between an Academic Medical Center and Primary Care Physicians."

Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care will provide the opportunity to earn up to 12 AMA PRA
Category 1 Credit(s)™ at lectures presented by faculty of Harvard Medical School and Baylor College of
Medicine. You will also have time to network with other clinicians at an educational activity specifically
tailored to the needs of primary care providers.

Our goal in developing quality CME courses is always to inspire, empower, and inform. We invite
you to take an active part in the future of health care by attending this premier CME course,
Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care.

We look forward to seeing you this March in Houston.

Keynote Speakers
Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care
THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2011
The Promise of Primary Care
John D. Goodson, MD, FACP
Dr Goodson, Deputy Director of the Harvard Medical School Course Development Committee, has been a primary
care practitioner for 35 years in the Internal Medicine Associates, a primary care internal medicine practice based at
the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In his early career as a medical educator, Dr Goodson expanded the
primary care training program at the MGH. He continues to teach in his practice and on the ward in patient service.
He has organized and taught primary care continuing education for 30 years. Nationally, he has been involved in health
care advocacy for the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the American College of Physicians (ACP).
He maintains his own private practice, seeing 60-70 patients per week, and admits and rounds on his own inpatients.
Dr Goodson will briefly summarize the current challenges facing primary care practice and then discuss the
many current opportunities to rebuild the primary care workforce. There are aspects of the 2010 health care
legislation that are quite favorable and there is a growing public support for our work but improvement is by
no means assured. Dr Goodson will present examples of how primary care has been maintained and restored
and will go on to assert that in the end, we need to marshal the support of every primary care provider and all
engage in a national effort to expand primary care.

Improving Value in Healthcare: A Partnership Between an Academic
Medical Center and Primary Care Physicians
Paul Klotman, MD
Dr Paul Klotman is president and CEO of Baylor College of Medicine since Sept. 1, 2010. At Baylor, he oversees the only
private medical school in the Greater Southwest, ranked among the top 25 medical schools for research by U.S. News &
World Report and first among Texas colleges, universities, and medical schools in funding for research and development.
Dr Klotman's research has been a blend of both basic and clinical research in molecular virology and AIDS
pathogenesis. He is the author of more than 200 publications and has been a visiting professor and lecturer
internationally in the field of HIV pathogenesis. He has been listed in both Castle Connolly and New York
Magazine as one of the region's Best Doctors and he currently leads the Association of Professors of Medicine
efforts in improving the training and mentoring of Physician Scientists.
The passage of the health care reform bill in 2010 brings millions of Americans who are not currently covered by
health insurance into an already limited primary care system. Providing care at this capacity will require academic
health centers and community physicians to develop creative approaches in caring for patients that assure a high
standard of quality. A number of options can be considered, including the expansion of health care teams to
further incorporate allied health professionals. The relationship that can be established between community-based
primary care physicians and academic health centers as one option to improve the value of health care to the
population while implementing health care reform will be the focus of this presentation.

Medicine as a Currency for Peace: The Passion to Bring Health,
Hope, and Healing
William H. Frist, MD
Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist shares his unique experience as a heart transplant surgeon and US
senator inspiring people to make a difference wherever they are by helping others, risking failure, challenging the
status quo, and above all, having a heart to serve. Frist tackles controversial issues to offer feasible solutions. His
simple philosophy for peace, for example, is service. “People don’t usually go to war against someone who helped
save their children,” Frist writes. “When people see America’s more compassionate, humanitarian side, the
barriers come down, and peace becomes a viable possibility.” Frist writes openly about the values and experiences
that shaped his life, and challenges and inspires everyone to find a place where they, too, can make a difference.
Senator Bill Frist, MD, served as a senator for 12 years. He has practiced medicine for 20 years and is a pioneer
surgeon in heart and lung transplantation. Dr Frist now focuses his efforts on relief work around the world.
The 21st century provides a remarkable opportunity for medicine to serve as a currency for peace. Health transcends
political and cultural boundaries, and healing can increase cooperation and harmony in a global society. We as physicians
have the opportunity to become heroes by sharing what we have learned here at home and around the world.
