Dearest Mandy, Thank you so much for including my story and my outing in your
magazine. The power of the net is awesome. I had not checked on your latest
magazine and I had a phone call from my friend in Nova Scotia. She had had a
call from a friend in California to tell her that Janey in Newfoundland had a story
in Mandy’s Magazine. Needless to say I checked as soon as I got off the phone,
and there I was. :o)
Great Magazine as usual. I don’t know how you do it. Oh and I noticed that you
sneaked me in among the secretaries. Not that I can compare myself with all
those gorgeous ladies, yourself included, but thanks anyway.

Hi Readers ,
I just wanted to tell everyone that although the magazine is for
designed for TG’s- it’s also a great read for the rest of us too!! Mandy’s
a friend of mine and she suggested that I take a butchers- so glad I did.
I perused the mag from cover to cover- absolutely fab!! Picked up a
few hint’s and tips myself. The mag is all about entertainment- which
it covers beautifully. It’s sometimes quite saucy- and I love that!! The
only thing I get a bit miffed at, is that Mandy often looks better than
me- damn her hahaha ) Mandy and co are approachable and really
friendly- so if you need to be in the know about anything- drop them a
line. Tell you’re chums to take a gander too-they’ll love it.

Now heres an odd thing, here I am in Taylor Towers, surrounded by a
minagi.........minnaje......min........loads of animals, that seem to have crept
seamlessly into my abode like a spring mist or sunday morning fart.
You see, I’m pretty sure I never ‘actually’ agreed to house any of the
blighters. The list now stands at Mollie the ancient and extremely soppy
Border Collie, Sox, the evil Tabby Cat that makes Garfield look an angel,
Lily, the feline trash can, Goldie, Sunshine, Longtail & Rainbow, the fish
(plus Redhead, now dearly departed via the toilet) and Smokey the rabid
rabbit.
Now, I put my hands up to Mollie, I remember bringing home a lil black
and white ball of fur ( or was that a new top? I digress ) and I ‘sort of’ re-
member Sox, I even remember putting up a token resistance of sorts, along
the lines of “ Not another bloody animal”

BUT

The rest?

I therefore set forth on a quest to cross-examine my immediate fam-

ily and ascertaining how I managed to accumulate such a wide variety of
‘extended family’.
First i tackled the wife, well, not ‘tackled’ more pinned to the sofa and
demanded answers on penalty of chocolate removal.
“ You agreed!” she innocently protested
“Since when?!!!” I retorted

 “Well” she said “ remember when you agreed to let Lily stay ‘ for a lil
while?”
“.............vaguely”
“ Well, she just .......hasnt...gone........back yet”
“ And the fish?”
“ You said he could!”
“When??!!”
“After you said that we weren’t keeping Lily”
“Oh!”
“.........................................and the rabbit?”
“ That was because the fish died “
“..................................................................................”

I think we’ll call that a draw

One Girl’s Story.... Janey Lang

I was born in August 1936 (you can do the math, girls ) in an industrial town on
the river Clyde in Scotland. The main industry was ship building and related
industries.

By 1939 a little upstart by the name of Adolph Hitler was doing nasty things and
by 1940 he was dropping bombs on me.My earliest recolection of the beginnings
of my desires was stealing a pair of my sister’s panties. She was a year older than
me and still remember the silky feel of them as I snuggled up in bed with them on.
To this day I don’t know how I didn’t get caught.

We were lucky and survived the war. I had started school and found myself
admiring the girls in my class. Some high lights stick out in my mind from those
far off days. A girl telling me I had lovely pink nails like a girl’s. My neighbour’s
daughter coming to the door one time wearing a coat over a slip and I could just
see the frilly lace of her slip showing. The kids from across the street coming to
the door at Hallowe’en for trick or treat and one of the boys was dressed in a little
white silk dress and wearing a French beret and looking oh so girly. Something
stabbed my heart at that moment.

Fast forward a couple of years, I would be about eight years old. Our teacher, Miss
Brown, decided to enter our class in a competition. Several schools were asked
to put on a short play and they would be judged to see who was the best. I don’t
remember much about the play itself, but I was to be a wood elf in a fairy story.
All the costumes and scenery etc had to be made by the class. Unable to make
very elaborate costumes, the teacher asked the girls if they had brownie uniforms
that could be used as elf costumes. I was given a little brown dress to wear and in
spite of all the giggling and embarassment and pretended reluctance, truth be told,
I could hardly wait for dress rehearsals. We put on the play at the auditorium of
another school. We didn’t win, but I got to perform in a dress and I was in heaven.
Forward again a couple of
years. I was about ten, I guess.
Strangely enough I had hardly
bothered with my sister and I
don’t recall being at all interested
in her clothes. I had by now
started taking an interest in my
mother’s clothes. I have vague
memories of being hugged
and being held close to her
wonderful skirts or dresses.
The turning point came around
this time. I was alone at home
and I sneaked into my mother’s
bedroom.
I started looking through her
things. In those days ladies
wore corsets and it was before
the days of pantyhose. Nylon
stockings were the thing.

I suspect that this is when the imprinting took place. I found a lovely lace up corset,
a pair of nylon stockings, and pair of white panties and joy of joy, a full slip. White
and silky and so wonderfuly smooth. The corset had hooks and eyes up one side,
so that once the laces were tied to your satisfaction, the corset could be put and
without having to lace up all the time.

 I lost no time in wrapping the corset
round myself and fastening the
hooks all the way up until I was
snugly wrapped. I then put on
the nylon stockings and fastened
them to the tabs of the corset. I still
remeber the feeling of euforia. Next
I pulled on the panties and picked
up the slip.

I put up my arms and slid the slip

down over my head. It slipped right
down over the corset and now in the
mirror I could see myself dressed
in this wonderful underwear and
feeling this overpowering feeling of
something that I had no words for.

From then on I was hooked.

Every chance I got I would raid my
mother’s wardrobe and dressing
table and borrow something to
wear.
I’ll by pass the next number of
years. A disasterous marriage, a
divorce, a seven year stint in the
army doing the macho thing. I can
hear you all say, “Been there, done
that.”

I came out of the army in 1965, but before that, there was one incident that was
significant. I had met my wife while on leave waiting to go to Germany.

While in Germany I befriended a girl who worked in the camp canteen. We were
just friends, she had a boy friend. She spoke fluent German and I asked her to help
me buy some nice lingerie to take home to my girl friend.

She agreed and we went down town together and went shopping for lingerie. I was
in heaven although I had to pretend not to be too interested.

The result was an all black outfit. Garter belt, panties, bra, full slip and stockings.
Back at camp, I was doing camp duty while almost everyone else was out on
maneuvers. The place was almost deserted. This was my chance to try on the
lingerie.

It had been years since I had had any contact with women’s clothes, although the
fantasies were always on my mind. I put on the garter belt, stockings, panties, bra
and slip. This was no pre-pubescent adventure in Mum’s underwear. This was a
full blown gut wrenching orgasm the like of which I had never experienced. There
are no words to describe the intensity of the feeling. Even after, when the physical
need had been satisfied, there was still a feeling of euphoria and more, a feeling
of “rightness” about it all.

Later when I was back home in

Scotland I had managed to buy
myself a black skirt, sweater,
slip, panties and garter belt and
stockings.
These was my only possesions
at this time and at night I would
drive out on a country road onto
the desolate Scottish moors, park
my van and change into my outfit.
I had one pair of medium heel
shoes. I would nervously change
in the back of my van, tentatively
open the door and sneak out and
then nervously walk up and down
a short distance, never going too
far from my van in case I had to
make a dash for safety.

 These night time excursions were such a strange mixture. The sheer joy of
being dressed, the fear of being discovered, the guilty feeling of doing something
wrong and the feeling of loss when I had to remove my femme things and go
drab again, wishing it would never end.

When it became obvious that my relationship was becoming serious, I came

out to my wife. I had never told my first wife about my cross dressing, although I
used to wear her clothes every chance I got. I instinctively knew that she was the
sort of person who would use it against me and probably out me if it was to her
advantage.

My wife accepted my CDing and over the years has put up with my pushing the
envelop. Now as I write this in September 2008, I look back and think how lucky
I have been with my wife. We just had our 40th anniversary. I am now 72 years
young. The burning fires have diminished considerably and I have promised
my wife that no one here where I live in Canada will know about Janey. I do,
however, still live with Janey very much a part of me. My hair has not been
cut for 10 years and is now down to my shoulders. I have pierced ears and
my current earings are double hoops made made of white and yellow gold. I
am wearing ladies slacks (no fly in front, dark blue) a ladies sweater light blue,
pantyhose, pink panties, a white camisole, a white bra with small silicone breast
forms. My shoes are femme but very plain. My glasses have plain gold rims and
are very androgenous.

In other words, although no one notices, I am in stealth drag all the time, so if
you meet me on the street, you will be looking at “Janey” without realising it. I
can not remember when I last bought any “guy” clothes.

When my wife goes out of town, Janey goes out in public. So far I have never
been read. Getting older is an advantage. I can now look like an elegant middle
aged lady (I hope) but I could never have passed when I was younger.

If you read my coming out story in an earlier edition of Mandy’s magazine it

may give you an insight as to the thrill of being out.

My little story is probably not much different from so many others, but I hope
you found it interesting.

memory of when we can first remember
being ‘special’, whether it was the soft
caress of a special garment, incentive
from a sibling, or just the deep ‘know-
ing’ that we were a lil different .
The ages that we knew this seem var-
ied, but following a pattern, here are
some of your stories.....

I remember that I was 6 years old. My older sister was supposed to
“baby-sit” me. She had a girl friend over. The two of them decided to
play dress up with me. I was thinking that it sounded fun but was
afraid that they would think I was not right if I went along so I said,
“No!” and ran away. They chased and caught me. They decided to tie me
to a chair and do make up first. I struggled. They won. I was bound
to the chair and they put lipstick and eye shadow on me ( my sister was
14 at the time).

Next they gave me a leotard and tights. They said that if I cooperated
and put them on they would not tell my mother that I was wearing make
up. So I put them on... and in that moment something clicked within me
and I knew that this was right. I felt right for the first time in my
life. I really did. I was balanced, at peace, happy. They then
changed my clothes several times - a tutu, white tights and toe shoes, a
sundress and black mary janes, and so on. I really loved it.

After the session was over, a few days later, I stole the leotard and
tights and wore them often when I could. And I have never been the same
since.

I was 6 and my sister 3. I played with her tea set and got caught by my parents at
different times. They both each loving-leigh explained that I was a boy and boys don’t
do such. My father said, “Son, you are a boy and will have to be a boy all your life,
so you’d better start acting like a boy.” Thus, I had no recourse but to begin my acting
career. It lasted 50 years. I’m still waiting for my academy award. I didn’t know not to
listen to him. In the society, that I lived in, in those early years, it was good advice, but
it was not the “right” advice. I am now a firm believer in the saying, “Life is too short”,
I’m trying desperate-leigh to cram a second life in with the first one. It’s getting rather
cramped in here.

I first found that the feel of soft clothing was very pleasurable at about the age of
10(1955). I also would rather play, at recess, with the Girls rather than the boys.
During Jr. High, I got to wondering if I might be Gay. I did some experimenting
and soon realized that that was not my thing. I started collecting my Mother’s
throwaway clothes and hiding them in my bedroom. I would lock the door and try
the dresses on. I went so far as altering them so that they would fit better. During
my senior year in High School, I was dating a girl that spent a lot of time with
me. We went to the lake, one day, and after we returned home, I discovered that
she had left a pair of shorts in my car. That was the first piece of female clothing,
other than my Mother’s , that I had ever had. Needless to say I did not offer to
return them.
I finally left High School and joined the military. During the next 4 years I started
collecting more Women’s clothes. I would hide them in a box and keep it stored
up high and out of sight. I did not experiment with make-up, boobs or wigs
until several years later. By the time I was 30 I was married and both of us were
working. We worked opposite shifts, so I had good opportunity to play in the
closet. I fabricated some boobs from a Nerf Ball and acquired a wig from a mail
order catalog. I also started experimenting with some drugstore make-up.
I was a frightful sight at first, but I eventually started to get things figured out,
after several years of experimenting. By the time I hit 40 I was feeling pretty
confident that I was making progress with my presentation. I was still very deep
in the closet. I had been through 2 marriages by then and a couple of purges.
Since I am also an amateur photographer, I started taking self portraits, to get an
“unbiased view” of what I was looking like. I was shocked to see that the camera
view was much less acceptable to look at compared my mind’s eye.
Since that early 80’s time I have kept a photographic record of my progress.
I have to say that I am very happy with my current look. In the mid 90’s (98
actually) I discovered that I was not the only person that was cross dressing. Since
that day I have been out and working on a quality wardrobe and presentation.

I was too young to remember according to Mom, but she cought me trying
to shave with her Pink Circular razor, i am sure she screamed because
of the sharp object but she also mentioned that i was a boy and boys
don’t use that type of Razor.

The 2nd time i admitted to myself was Halloween when i was eleven. When
the girls “Got me back” snapping my bra i really really liked it.

Well if I could put an early date on being a bit different

perhaps? I would have been 4 or 5, a hot day, no “cossie”
so my ever practical mother told me to wear my sister’s
swimsuite, navy with ruffles which I seemed to remember
liking! then when the other kids saw me, I was laughed out of
the place obviously, about this same time I seem to remember
taking some pleasure didn’t quite know why, by hiding under
the sideboard and putting my mother’s lipstick on, that one’s
just come back to me!

whether this was the sstart I can’t say for sure, but at the same
time I seemed to have a fascination with metamorphosis and
had fantasies about being able to change into anything, later on
maybe this is what crystalised into crossdressing? Anyone else
had that one about being able to “morph” into anything when
they were young?

Mandy !
At what age does cognizance of ‘self’ start ? In my case its so long ago, its really very hard to pin
down a particular year. In my very early years we lived in one of those ‘tropical paradises’ otherwise
known as a ‘crown colony’ so I have no doubt that in deference to the heat my baby clothing
consisted of a (washable) diaper and perhaps a very light cotton ‘shift’.
At some early stage I can recall sharing baths with an older sister and becoming aware that she was
much more ‘streamlined’ below the waist than I was. That discovery immediately prompted my own
‘streamlining’ by way of a very successful ‘baby tucking’.
My best guess is that this was more than likely at around the age of four (4). It could have been
before that, but certainly no later.
The first ‘clothing rebellion’ occurred at around that age too. Once a year we received a shipment of
‘goodies’ from the UK, which was usually the highlight of my family’s year. I got a white sailor suit
while my sister got this beautiful pink frock with bowed short sleeves and waist . My memory is
quite clear on the point that I raised eternal hell at the ‘mistake’..that dress was MINE.
I can not recall exactly whether or not I’d already been into my sisters stuff prior to this, but
certainly thereafter anything she owned was MINE to wear. I do not recall ever having been scolded
, but there came a time , (because she was shipped off to boarding school ) when the only feminine
clothing readily available that fit, belonged to two little girl friends (sisters) that lived down the
street.
I soon grew out of their size, but nicely into my Mothers, and that was when ‘trouble’ started. She
did not take kindly to having her things ‘borrowed’.
But, you know, the good Lord provides. In this instance the ‘provision’ was a lady boarder, and hard
on her heels, not one , but two school girl boarders. (my Dad was Headmaster of a school) . My
bed room was sandwiched between the lady’s and the girl’s, and I was in seventh heaven with more
female stuff than I knew what to do with.
With all that availability, why on earth you may ask, did I find it necessary to try on the dress of a
much older brothers girlfriend whom happened to be visiting for a long weekend ? because it was
a gorgeous dress and was simply ‘me’. I realized it was a bit snug going on over my head, but what
the hell ! Hell is what happened when I couldn’t get the dress off !!
Not sure I should be answering this QOTM at all, since I do not ever remember feeling ‘special’ . I
was and still am , ‘just me’..why would a girl NOT want to dress in girls clothing ? What I suppose
I did have was a feeling of pride in that I was the only person I knew who could appear, at will, as
‘streamlined’ below the waist as any girl. This natural tendency would eventually cause a bit of a
problem much later when I got married since it was difficult to remember to ‘let it all hang out’.
In closing, it is with a warm feeling of gratitude that I can relate that those two little sisters from so
long ago, are to this day, (70 + years later) still my best friends....

I was very young (3ish) when I thought that I might like to dress like a girl. There
was a life-sized doll in my closet for some reason, and I really liked it’s dress.
My dream came true shortly thereafter when my mother wanted me to dress as
her little girl for a mother-daughter banquet!!! I was the only child at the time.
I protested (mostly for the sake of my father) but ended up going dressed in that
doll’s dress to make mommy (and me) happy anyways!!
The only other manifestations for a long time was that I got into my mothers
things every chance I got (which wasn’t really very often). If she only knew...how
might it have been different?!

Christmas Time is Near.
We just got over Hallowe’en,
And what do you suppose,
Someone’s looking for a poem,
Or maybe even prose.
It seems that Christmas must be planned,
A long time in advance,
And when you mention this to folk,
They give a look askance.
Did you know the Christmas song,
(a song that’s very cool)
Was done in California,
While sitting by the pool.
So every year the ether sings,
With Christmas songs galore,
But did you know that they were done,
Oh, several months before.

So, Mandy is being smart,
She’s keeping well ahead,
She’s doing up the Christmas mag,
And putting it to bed.
So here am I, November two,
Trying out my best,
Sitting here in panties,
And camisole for vest.
Trying to come up with verse,
That’s in the proper mood,
Thinking now of Santa,
And children very good.
I have to think of something,
To start my little rhyme,
Something soft and wistful,
To get you every time.
Now, wait, I think I’ve got it,
An idea comes to mind,
Something about Christmas eve,
And Santa being kind.
‘Twas the night before Christmas,
And all through the house,
Nothing was stirring,
Not even a mouse.”
No, that sounds too corny,
I’ll tell you why,
No one would remember ,
In the sweet by and by.
So back to the drawing board,
In panties and hose,
Trying to think,
Though my mind is all froze.
Oh, please, oh please, Mandy,
Please won’t you say,
“I need your poem, Janey,
On next new years day.”

Following our article concerning toilet facilities for the TG community, it seems that a few
countries have taken it onboard

Thai school offers transsexual toilet

With its spacious, tree-lined grounds and slightly threadbare classrooms, there is nothing obviously
unusual about the Kampang Secondary School.

It is situated in Thailand’s impoverished north-east,

and most of the pupils are the children of farmers.

Every morning at 0800 they all gather outside to sing

the national anthem and watch the flag being raised.

Then they have a chance to use the toilets, before

heading off the first classes of the day.

Kampang is proud of its toilets. Spotless, and

surrounded by flowering tropical plants, they have
won national awards for cleanliness.

But there is something else about them too. Between

the girls’ toilet and the boys’, there is one signposted
with a half-man, half-woman figure in blue and red.

boys preen their hair and apply face cream.

‘Uncomfortable’

The headteacher, Sitisak Sumontha, estimates that in any year between 10% and 20% of his boys consider
themselves to be transgender - boys who would rather be girls.

“They used to be teased every time they used the boys’

toilets,” he said, “so they started using the girls’ toilets
instead. But that made the girls feel uncomfortable. It made
these boys unhappy, and started to affect their work.”

So the school offered to build the transgender boys their own

facility, and they welcomed it.

Triwate Phamanee is a slightly built 13-year-old who is

adamant that he will one day change his gender.

“We’re not boys,” he told me, “so we don’t want to use the
boys’ toilet - we want them to know we are transsexuals.”

Vichai Saengsakul, 15, agrees.

The transsexual pupils are delighted with their
own facilities “People need to know that being a transsexual is not a joke,”
he says, “it’s the way we want to live our lives. That’s why
we’re grateful for what the school has done.”
Normal treatment

The transgender boys in Kampang tend to stick together as a group, practising their somewhat exaggerated
feminine mannerisms together and generally camping it up.

They still have to wear male uniforms, make-up is not allowed (although some manage to sneak in a touch of
lipstick and mascara), and of course sex-change surgery is out of the question at this age - the youngest self-
declared transsexual is 12.
But they appear to be treated perfectly normally by other
pupils and teachers alike.

I asked the headmaster whether they were not too young to

be making decisions about their gender.

He said that, in his 35 years of working in the Thai education

system, he had come across many boys like this, and they
never changed. Many go on as adults to have sex-change
surgery, while others will live as gay men, he said.

Thailand is well known for its tolerance of transgender

men, and they are very visible in everyday life. Sex-change
surgery has become a speciality of the Thai health industry,
and it is relatively inexpensive; patients come here from all
over the world for the operation.

The Kampang school’s initiative, far from stirring up controversy, has instead prompted a discussion in other schools
over whether they should be providing the same facilities.

A ratio of 10% to 20% of boys calling themselves transsexual in a provincial high school does seem very high, but
Mr Sitisak assured me that in his experience it was not unusual.
Which brought up a question that has been rattling around my head
ever since I first lived in Thailand seven years ago: Why do so many
Thai men want to become women?

I asked Suttirat Simsiriwong, who became a campaigner for

transgender rights after she was barred entry to a nightclub at an
international hotel in Bangkok last year.

Poised, articulate and very feminine, it is hard to tell that she was not
born a woman.

“Maybe the numbers of gays, of people with sexual identity issues,

might be the same as in other countries,” said Suttirat, “but because
Thai society and culture tend to be very sweet, very soft, and the men
can be really feminine, if we tend to be gay, many of us tend to be

Discrimination remains

Tolerance, said Suttirat, is not the same thing as acceptance.

Despite their high profile in Thailand, transsexuals complain that they are still stereotyped - they can find work
easily enough as entertainers, in the beauty industry, the media, or as prostitutes, but it is much harder to become a
transgender lawyer or investment banker.

And their biggest complaint is that they cannot change their legal status.

Despite a proposal during the drafting of a new constitution last year, to allow them to change the gender on their
identity cards, this has not yet been approved.

University renames ‘gents’ as ‘toilets with urinals’
- to avoid upsetting transgender students

Anyone caught short at Manchester University will have

to decide whether to use the ‘toilets’ or the ‘toilets with
urinals’ after the women’s and men’s were re-named to
avoided offending transgender students.

The change was made in the university’s Students’ Union

after a number of transgender women claimed they were
uncomfortable using men’s loos.

A sign reading ‘Toilets with urinals’ was duly placed over

the traditional ‘stick man’ symbol while a ‘Toilets’ sign
replaced the women’s graphic.

The university’s women’s officer Jennie Killip told the

student newspaper, Student Direct: ‘Toilets are very much,
you know, for boys and for girls, so we’ve taken away that
overtly gendered aspect.

‘A trans-student who does not identify themselves as a

man would have to face abuse and violence if they used the
“other” toilet.’
Speaking to the BBC, she said: ‘If you were born female,
still present quite feminine, but define as a man you should
be able to go into the men’s toilets - if that’s

‘You don’t necessarily have had to have gender reassignment surgery, but you could just define yourself as
a man, feel very masculine in yourself, feel that in fact being a woman is not who you are.’But some female
students said they were unhappy with the decision. One said: ‘Girls might not want to use the same toilets as
boys, so then you just end up with people complaining about that - so you can’t really win.’ Another said: ‘I
personally wouldn’t want to be in the same toilet as a man.” The university’s newspaper last week criticised
the new ‘gender-neutral’ facilities.Almost 60 people, including Ms Killip, have signed a letter to the student
newspaper criticising the editorial. Newspaper spokeswoman Susannah Birkwood said: ‘The toilets have
been provided for men who don’t self identify as men and women who don’t think of themselves as women.
‘Whether or not this is political correctness gone mad… it certainly seems that way to some members of our
student community.’Writing on the paper’s website one angry student said:‘I agree that this is a complete
waste of time and money. I am sure the Union will now be flooded with complains from its female students
about the state the toilets are left in by the men.’

Late home after a night out, a youngster attempted
to climb into his home down the chimney. He did
not to want to wake other residents in the Judson
Center social services agency; also he had broken
his curfew and wanted no trouble.
In best Santa Claus mode he climbed onto the roof
and let himself down the chimney; unfortunately
he was too large, and he became stuck. The 17 year
old began moaning and was heard and rescued. Fire
fighters and police officers from the City of Royal
Oak, Michigan, USA, had to pull him out. The youth
suffered from minor scrapes and bruises.

Two Idiotic reactions to

1) This is a true story about John Porter, from
New York State, USA, whose pipes in his home
froze one winter. Anxious to unfreeze them, Mr
Porter backed his car up to an open window so
that the exhaust would warm up the house.
A little while later and Porter, his wife and
their three children had to be rushed to hospital
suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.
2) George Gibbs, 23, suffered second and third-
degree burns on his head in Columbus, Ohio
one freezing cold winter. Unable to start his car,
he diagnosed the problem as a frozen fuel line
which he thought he could correct by running
warm petrol through it. He then tried to heat a
two-gallon can of petrol on his gas stove in the
kitchen.

Myra was going to the Christmas office party but
needed a new party dress.
In the clothing store she asked, ‘May I try on that

Traditional Christmas Pudding

Martha decided to move with the times and try the delights of microwave
cooking. Whereupon, her devoted husband Archie went out and bought her a
brand new top-of-the range Sharp Microwave oven.

Christmas approached and Martha got out her Christmas pudding recipe
and assembled the ingredients. She proceeded along traditional lines and
even got the each member of the family to stir the mixture ‘for luck’. When
Martha consulted the microwave’s manual for the cooking time, she could
not believe that ten minutes would be enough for a traditional Christmas
pudding. Consequently she decided to substitute her normal cooking time of
50 minutes.

As Martha was in the lounge watching her favourite T.V. programme she
did not see the pudding spitting in the microwave oven, nor did she hear the
mini-explosions. When she finally extracted the pudding from the microwave
after nearly an hour of cooking on ‘High’, it smelt of burnt sugar and looked
like a ball of tar. Naturally, the Christmas pudding was a disaster, so much
so, that Martha could not even prod it with a fork. In fact the black ball stuck
to the bottom of the bowl and Archie had to get a screwdriver to prize it from
its base.

In a fit of pique, Martha threw the shrivelled Christmas pudding to Togo her
St Bernard puppy. After a few days she could see the funny side, and Togo
loved his new indestructible toy, which amused him until the next Christmas.

 The Christmas Hold-up
It was Christmas Eve; the department store manager was in his
office just paying off Father Christmas. All of a sudden a teenager
and ordered the manager to hand-over the not inconsiderable
takings.
The manager was wondering what to do, so the teenager
attempted to fire his gun in order to make the manager’s mind,
and open the till and hand over the money. Although the robber
pulled the trigger, nothing happened, so unbelievably, he peered
down the barrel and then fired again.
This time it worked.

Grandpa’s Christmas Story

Grandpa decided that shopping for Christmas presents
had become too difficult. All his grandchildren had
everything they needed, so he decided to send them
each a cheque (checks).
On each card he wrote:
‘Happy Christmas Grandpa’
P.S. ‘Buy your own present!’
While Grandpa enjoyed the family festivities, he
thought that his grandchildren were just slightly
distant. It preyed on his mind into the New Year. Then
one day he was sorting out his study and under a pile
of magazines, he found a little pile of cheques for his
grandchildren. He had completely forgotten to put
them in with the Christmas cards.

Chrismukkah
Continuing the current trend of large-scale mergers and acquisitions, it
was announced today at a press conference that Christmas and Hanukkah
will merge. An industry source said that the deal had been in the works for
about 1300 years.
While details were not available at press time, it is believed that the
overhead cost of having twelve days of Christmas and eight days of
Hanukkah was becoming prohibitive for both sides. By combining forces,
we’re told, the world will be able to enjoy consistently high-quality
service during the Fifteen Days of Chrismukkah, as the new holiday is
being called.
Massive layoffs are expected, with lords a-leaping and maids a-milking
being the hardest hit. As part of the conditions of the agreement, the
letters on the dreydl, currently in Hebrew, will be replaced by Latin, thus
becoming unintelligible to a wider audience.
Also, instead of translating to “A great miracle happened there,” the
message on the dreydl will be the more generic “Miraculous stuff
happens.” In exchange, it is believed that Jews will be allowed to
use Santa Claus and his vast merchandising resources for buying and
delivering their gifts.
One of the sticking points holding up the agreement for at least three
hundred years was the question of whether Jewish children could leave
milk and cookies for Santa even after having eaten meat for dinner. A
breakthrough came last year, when Oreos were finally declared to be
Kosher. All sides appeared happy about this.
A spokesman for Christmas, Inc., declined to say whether a takeover of
Kwanzaa might not be in the works as well. He merely pointed out that,
were it not for the independent existence of Kwanzaa, the merger between
Christmas and Chanukah might indeed be seen as an unfair cornering
of the holiday market. Fortunately for all concerned, he said, Kwanzaa
will help to maintain the competitive balance. He then closed the press
conference by leading all present in a rousing rendition of “Oy Vey, All Ye
Faithful.”

A LETTER TO SANTA FROM MOM

Dear Santa,
I’ve been a good mom all year. I’ve fed, cleaned and cuddled my two children on demand, visited the
doctor’s office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree
on the school playground and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter’s girl scout sash
with staples and a glue gun.
I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my
son’s red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I’ll
find anymore free time in the next 18 years.
Here are my Christmas wishes:
I’d like a pair of legs that don’t ache after a day of chasing kids (in any color, except purple, which I
already have) and arms that don’t flap in the breeze but are strong enough to carry a screaming toddler out
of the candy aisle in the grocery store. I’d also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh
month of my last pregnancy. If you’re hauling big ticket items this year I’d like a car with fingerprint
resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music; a television that doesn’t broadcast any programs
containing talking animals; and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide
to talk on the phone.
On the practical side, I could use a talking daughter doll that says, “Yes, Mommy” to boost my parental
confidence, along with one potty-trained toddler, two kids who don’t fight and three pairs of jeans that will
zip all the way up without the use of power tools. I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting,
“Don’t eat in the living room” and ‘Take your hands off your brother,’ because my voice seems to be just
out of my children’s hearing range and can only be heard by the dog. And please don’t forget the Playdoh
Travel Pack, the hottest stocking stuffer this year for mothers of preschoolers. It comes in three fluorescent
colors and is guaranteed to crumble on any carpet making the in-laws’ house seem just like mine. If it’s too
late to find any of these products, I’d settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same
morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam
container. If you don’t mind I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season.
Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It
would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment
as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family; or if my toddler didn’t look so cute sneaking
downstairs to eat contraband ice cream in his pajamas at midnight.
Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think
he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the chimney and come
in and dry off by the fire so you don’t catch a cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table but don’t eat too
many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

The experiences of transgender people are sorely lacking in the literature on aging and the life course.
Research on older populations rarely account for gay and lesbian people, let alone those that are transgender.
To complicate this issue further, older people themselves rarely identify as transgender because this term has
only recently entered the mainstream discourse on queer experiences. Consequently, it can be challenging to
provide adequate services for the gender-different elderly. The following annotated bibliography introduces
readers to materials available that relate to the topic of transgender experiences with aging.

The bibliography is grouped into five interrelated themes. The first theme deals with theory and history. This
section provides readers with a background and context for understanding transgender experiences. The next
theme contains autobiographies and other literature related to the process of transitioning from one gender to
another. These stories provide insight into the aging experience as affected by hormones and surgery, and offer
readers an intimate and personal perspective from the point of view of transgender people themselves. After
reflections on the lives of transpeople, the following section deals with transgender health issues. This section
highlights the primary health concerns that affect transpeople as they age. Health issues inform the subsequent
section that describes the broader aging issues affecting transpeople. It serves to briefly acquaint readers with
the specific issues affecting older transgender people. The final section includes references that deal with the
political and social aspects of transgender aging. These references address policy measures and advocacy on
the behalf of transgender people. In this section, readers will encounter issues like elder abuse, discrimination,
relationships, and building community. This final section serves to tie all the issues together, forming a
comprehensive understanding of the variety of issues that affect aging transpeople.

These themed sections should not be used in isolation from each other. Rather, they are meant to provide an
integrated understanding of the topic. While these references deal with transgender experiences of aging,
they are not inclusive of every experience. Notably lacking are the experiences of older transgender people of
color and those from non-Western cultures. There is also a lack of information on issues related to disability,
sexuality, leisure, long-term care, and assisted living. This bibliography provides a framework for an initial
understanding of the lives of older transpeople. Hopefully, others interested in the field will expand upon the
issues presented here.

In order to understand transgender experiences with aging, it is important to first become familiar with
transgender history and theories on gender. Through theory and history, one is able to place discussions on
transgender aging in a broader context. The following references briefly introduce readers to larger issues
affecting transgender people.

Butler, Judith. 2001. “Doing Justice to Someone— Sex Reassignment and Allegories of Transsexuality.” GLQ-
A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies 7:621-36.

Butler is recognized as a leader in postmodern and poststructuralist gender theory. Her perspective on
transgender experiences presents gender as a social construction. This article is not as dense as some of her
other work, but tends to look at trans issues in an impersonal manner. It is of interest to readers seeking to
become familiar with scholarly takes on transgender experiences.

Feinberg, Leslie. 1996. Transgender Warriors: Making History from Joan of Arc to RuPaul. Boston: Beacon
Press.

Feinberg details a comprehensive and cross-cultural history of transgender people. This book is extremely
informative and written in an enlightening manner. She makes use of pictures and photographs throughout the
text. This is an essential and pioneering book for anyone interested in understanding transgender history.

Hausman, Bernice L. 2001. “Recent Transgender Theory.” Feminist Studies 27:465-91.

Hausman reviews the predominant theoretical discussions on transgender experiences and discusses its
overlaps with queer and feminist theories. This is a thorough examination of available theories that frame the
transgender discourse and provides readers with a good introduction. It is most useful if scholarly connections
are of interest.

Autobiographies and Transitioning

An important aspect of the transgender aging experience is the actual transition from one gender to another.
Many transitioning individuals experience what has been described as a second puberty period, coming out
process, or coming of age experience. Through the examination of transpeople’s personal stories, readers are
able to understand and relate to transgender experiences through an intimate lens.

Davis, Kate. 2000. Southern Comfort. New York: Q-Ball Productions.

This documentary film chronicles the life of Robert Eads, a female-to-male transsexual living in the rural
South. His relationships with family, friends, and partner are highlighted. Viewers witness his battle with
cancer and the obstacles he faces in accessing health care. It is a touching and insightful look at the struggles
endured in Eads’ last years. The film offers audiences access into one man’s personal story.

Davis, Sharon. 1985. A Finer Specimen of Womanhood: A Transsexual Speaks Out. New York: Vantage.

The author, an African American transsexual woman, offers an account of her transition and details her
consequent role in the public spotlight. The book offers readers a personal look into her life, and is one of the
few books highlighting the story of a transwoman of color.

Hunt, Nancy. 1978. Mirror Image: The Odyssey of a Male-to-Female Transsexual. New York: Holt, Rinehart
Winston.

This book describes how one person transitioned from a crossdressing man into a transsexual woman.
It highlights how this transition affected her relationship with a woman partner over time, an aspect of
transitioning relevant to many people who partner with transwomen.

Martino, Mario. 1977. Emergence: A Transsexual Autobiography. New York: Crown Publishers.

This book describes one of the first accounts of a female-to-male transsexual. It provides insight into the aging
process of one person when instances like this were presumed to be rare.

Rudd, P. 1990. Crossdressing with Dignity: The Case for Transcending Gender Lines. Katy, TX: PM
Publishers.

This book’s insights stem from research on a large number of crossdressers. It chronicles how men become
more comfortable with their gender expression as they age. It also embraces a perspective of gender fluidity. It
is useful for service providers and analysts interested in how research informs professional practice.

Transgender Health
Historically, transgender experiences have been excluded and misrepresented from research on health. For
example, no studies have examined the long-term effects of hormone use, nor have any attempted to describe
transgender experiences with sexual health. This section contains references that highlight the available
information related to transgender health.

Cascio, Justin. 2001. “Cancer Risks in the Trans Community.” Trans-Health.com 3. www.trans-health.com/
Iss3Vol1/cancer.htm. Retrieved November 16, 2002.

This article mostly describes cancer risks for transwomen and recommendations for mammography.
Suggestions for age-appropriate cancer screenings are given. Although short in length, the article highlights a
neglected issue in the transgender aging population. Every transwoman undergoing hormone therapy should
read this.

Lombardi, Emilia L. and G. van Servellen. 2000. “Building Culturally Sensitive Substance Use Prevention
and Treatment Programs for Transgendered Populations.” Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment 19:291-96.

This article focuses exclusively on substance problems in the transgender community. The authors advocate
for transgender inclusion in substance abuse treatment programs. They suggest ways for providers to become
more sensitive and inclusive of transgender clients. It is a useful guide for providers that service transgender
clients in diverse settings.

Lombardi, Emilia. 2001. “Enhancing Transgender Health Care.” American Journal of Public Health 91:869-
73.

This article serves to encourage providers and researchers to understand the specific needs of transgender
clients. It discusses obstacles transpeople have been confronted with in accessing health services and provides
suggestions for improvement. The author effectively and clearly communicates the issue, providing a catalyst
for change within the professional field.

Tully, Brian. 1992. Accounting for Transsexualism and Transhomosexuality: The Gender Identity Careers of
Over 200 Men and Women Who Have Petitioned for Surgical Reassignment. London: Whiting and Birch.

This book examines the lives of transsexuals from a variety of genders, classes, and ages. It discusses obstacles
encountered by transpeople in accessing health services related to transitioning. It is useful for transpeople
interested in avoiding common mistakes in dealing with health systems.

Within the body of knowledge on transgender experiences, there is a lack of information about aging and the
life course. The following references describe an underrepresented faction of the transgender community, and
pinpoint an important aspect of this bibliography.

Bockting, Walter O. and Charles Cesaretti. 2001. “Spirituality, Transgender Identity, and Coming Out.”
Journal of Sex Education and Therapy 26:291-301.

This article begins to describe the topic of transgender spiritualities. For such an intimate subject, it tends to
focus on the more impersonal aspects of transgender experiences, but is useful for transpeople interested in
exploring accessible spiritual paths.

Cahill, Sean and Ken South. 2002. “Policy Issues Affecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People
in Retirement.” Generations 26:49-54.

This article is a groundbreaking peek into the issues faced by LGBT people in retirement. It provides a
framework for understanding the unique needs of older LGBT people. Transgender issues are discussed, but
the majority of information pertains to lesbians and gays.

Loree Cook-Daniels’ contributions permeate this website. In “Growing Old Transgendered,” she briefly
introduces readers to the issues facing older transgender people. She describes activism within the
LGBT community in “Ageism.” “Elder Abuse” is an abbreviated version of a larger report and describes
occurrences of violence against the elderly. It is written in an informal and accessible manner. “Lesbian,
Gay Male, Bisexual and Transgendered Elders: Elder Abuse and Neglect Issues” is an exceptional article
that contextualizes elder abuse in the LGBT communities. Concerning transgendered elders, providers are
cautioned to be sensitive, noting that the term “transgender” is relatively new and that many older people will
not identify as such. The author discusses issues around legal realities, intimate relationships, and provider-
client relationships. Cook-Daniels discusses issued related to SOFFAs (significant others, family, friends, and
allies) as well. In “FTM Post Mortem,” this personal story describes the transphobic situations encountered
by a partner of an FtM transsexual after he died. It provides a human look into the reality of transgender
discrimination as it affects partners. “Transgender Elders and SOFFAs: A Primer for Service Providers and
Advocates” is a comprehensive and informative article that defines and explains terms used in describing the
transgender population. It details issues of transitioning in later life, health concerns for aging populations,
legal and economic issues, and issues faced by SOFFAs. The intended audiences are service providers and
policy-makers, and the article succeeds in clearly outlining the pressing concerns of transgender elders.

Other articles of interest include Joseph M. Schreiber’s “Slow Learner,” a story of an FtM who transitioned
within a marriage to a man. This article provides an interesting account of a perspective rarely vocalized in
the FtM community. Shannon Minter provides a brief summary of legal issues transgender people may face
concerning marriage in “Transgender Elders and Marriage: The Importance of Legal Planning.” This article
specifically focuses on how these issues pertain to older transpeople. Any transgender people interested in
learning about how transitioning affects marriage privileges should read this article.

Making It Political
The following articles put transgender aging issues in a broader context of advocacy and political activism.
They highlight some of the specific issues confronted by this community and provide suggestions to improve
the quality of life for transpeople.

Edwards, Douglas J. 2001. “Outing the Issue.” Nursing Homes Long Term Care Management 50:40-44.

This article discusses retirement and long-term care for LGBT populations. Geared mostly to service
providers, it provides ways to make LGBT people feel accepted within integrated communities. It does not go
into specific needs for transgender people in great detail, but offers supportive resources for more information.

Lombardi, Emilia L., Riki Anne Wilchins, D. Priesing, and D. Malouf. 2001. “Gender Violence: Transgender
Experiences with Violence and Discrimination.” Journal of Homosexuality 42:89-101.

This article is a collective effort to highlight an unfortunately common experience of transgender people. The
information contained within this article is moving and is effective in arguing for increased legal protection for
transpeople. Anyone interested in political advocacy for transgender people should read this article.

Namaste, Vivian K. and Sharon E. Preves. 2001. “Invisible Lives: The Erasure of Transsexual and
Transgendered People.” Journal of Sex Research 38:269-71.

This article discusses the lack of information about transgender experiences in research. It calls for more
inclusion and integration of transgender experiences to provide for better services. It successfully places trans
issues at the forefront of sex research and is of concern to researchers in the field.

Thomas, S. and G. Mason. 2001. Engendering Homophobia: Violence, Sexuality and Gender Conformity.”
British Journal of Sociology 37:257-73.

This article discusses issues faced by transgender people in Europe. It details the connections between
homophobia and sexism and how they relate to transgender oppression. Although academic in tone, it is
useful for readers interested in how different oppressions intersect.

Witten, Tarynn M. and Evan A. Eyler. 1999. “Hate Crimes and Violence Against the Transgendered.” Peace
Review 11:461-69.

This article describes the transgender population and focuses on how transpeople have been targeted with
violence. This provides one of the first looks into the problem of violence against transpeople.

In compiling this bibliography, it is clear that a lot of work still needs to be done. Many voices of transgender
elders remain unheard, and transpeople are underrepresented in the available gerontological literature. In
addition, the references cited above will appeal to different audiences in terms of content and accessibility.
Some readings are most useful for transgender people in processes of self-discovery or for personal
knowledge and information. Other resources will be helpful for SOFFAs. Finally, many of the references will
appeal to those with academic or professional interests. It is my sincere hope that these references serve as a
catalyst for future exploration of the topic of transgender aging experiences.

Plenty of useful and thought provoking reading there, here are some more helpful places to visit.

Growing Old Transgendered

Are FTMs who have been on testosterone for 30 years more likely to develop blood problems? Are
there heart medications older MTFs should steer clear of? Is 65 too late to have a phalloplasty?

How comfortable will the partner of 55-year-old, “new FTM” feel in the local support group? What
have been others’ experiences telling grandchildren that grandpa’s going to become grandma? How
does one go about using a parent’s power of attorney when the name on the paper is “Judy Smith”
and you’re now “James Smith”?

When it’s time to enter a nursing home, who is available to help educate the nurses’ aides about
how to handle a man with “female” genitals? If the nursing home refuses to accept the new
resident, does he have any recourse? Does he have any rights if the nursing home refuses to let
him have private time alone with his male spouse?

If most of these questions stump you, you’re in good company. Although transgendered persons have
always existed, we will be the first generations to reach old age in sufficient numbers to be able to
start forging the answers to these - and hundreds of other - aging-related questions.

In 1998 the Transgender Aging Network (TAN) and ElderTG were founded to start answering these
questions. TAN networks and supports the “professionals” - researchers, health care professionals,
service providers, advocates, educators, and others - who are interested in transgender aging issues.
ElderTG is an e-mail list that networks and supports transsexual, transgender, and intersex persons
aged 50 and older, and the SOFFAs involved with such persons.

The range of issues and persons that are of interest to both TAN and ElderTG is huge. There are at
least three generations encompassed within the targeted agespan, for instance. One generation,
roughly 50 to 65, is still dealing with workforce issues while simultaneously planning retirement,
providing eldercare to older relatives, and finishing raising and launching children. The middle
generation, approximately 65 to 85, is coping with the challenges of retirement; the loss of loved
ones, income, and routines; the threat of isolation; and, possibly, increasing health concerns. The
oldest generation, those 85 and older, is concerned about its legacies, arranging for long term care,
and making end of life decisions.

Another way of dividing this population is by stage of transition. An FTM transitioning at age 63 has questions
quite different from those facing his age peer who transitioned 25 years before, for instance. Yet all those who are
aging or who are working with older transgendered persons and SOFFAs share concerns and, more importantly,
knowledge and experience that others can use and build upon.

Some of the areas that we hope to work on include:

· Models of transgendered aging. (It’s always helpful to know that others have forged the path in front of you.)

· Healthy transgender aging. (What are the implications of long-term hormone use? How does
testosterone react when mixed with three or four or six other medications for chronic conditions?
Should hormone dosages be reduced once one becomes 60, 70, or 80?)

· Healthy transgender aging interactions. (Are the issues and support needs of older transgendered
persons and SOFFAs different from those of their younger peers?)

· System advocacy. (How do we educate the hundreds of thousands of aging services providers
first that transgender elders exist and, then, how to appropriately serve them? Who can help
transgendered elders get Medicare to pay for surgery? )

· Integration into the transgender community. (Do older transgender persons and SOFFAs feel
welcome in existing transgender organizations? Are these organizations meeting their needs?)

TAN has undertaken a number of advocacy efforts, including:

· Answered a request from SAGE (Senior Action in a Gay Environment - the oldest Lesbian and Gay
aging services organization in the country) to assist them in understanding what they’d need to do to
incorporate transgender aging issues into their programs. (It’s not clear what they’ve done as a result
of this, but we’ve certainly been circulating copies of that letter!)

· Lobbied the sponsors of a Washington, D.C. conference on Lesbian and Gay aging to include at least
a mention of transgendered elders and TAN. (This letter and packet of materials was also sent to
Congressman Barney Frank, who was keynoting the conference.)

· Worked with LGAIN, the Lesbian and Gay Aging Interests Network, of the American Society on Aging
- the largest professional group in the country concerned with Lesbian and Gay aging - to include
transgendered issues on its website and in its newsletter. This work has resulted in a decision to devote
a whole edition of their newsletter to transgender aging issues during 1999! TAN will help plan, write,
and distribute this newsletter.

· Advocated that the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) expand its public policy paper on
“LGBT” aging issues to actually include information on transgender aging public policy issues.

Although organizations concerned with Lesbian and Gay aging issues may be the most likely to also begin
looking at transgender aging issues, they are certainly not the only ones TAN members are working with. For
instance, one TAN member has been including transgender aging issues in workshops she gives nationally to adult
protective services and aging services professionals. Another has begun including “out” transgendered elders in a
traveling photography and essays exhibit she has created.

Winter-proof your skin

Studies at the International Dermal Institute have shown that 59 per cent of women over the age of 18 rank dry,
dehydrated skin as their main concern during winter. So if your skin starts to misbehave when the weather turns, our
essential tips will ensure you are prepared for the onslaught

Surface matters
‘Exfoliation will buff away the dead cells that might
otherwise dull our complexion,’ explains skincare guru
Bharti Vyas. ‘The very act of removing this redundant
top layer appears to stimulate cell production lower
down in the epidermis.

‘However, although any skin will benefit from gentle

weekly exfoliation, take care as over-enthusiastic
scrubbing can undermine the skin’s barrier function.’

Try a soft facecloth or flannel as a DIY alternative to

a facial scrub, although avoid using one with a harsh,
scratchy surface. After cleansing, massage gently to
loosen any dead cells on the skin’s surface. If skin is
especially dry, massage a little cream cleanser onto
damp skin, then massage with your facecloth.

Become richer
A few adjustments to your skincare regime will pay dividends when its cold.

Hannah Cowell, skincare manager at U.R Beautiful, Kingston-upon-Thames, says: ‘Swap your foaming or liquid
cleanser for a luxurious cream version, which will feel richer while nourishing and balancing the skin.

‘Most peoples’ skin demands a richer moisturiser during the winter months but you need to choose the right one for
you – just because a product is creamier or more expensive, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s more effective (see
our expert tips below for ingredients to look out for).

Hannah Cowell says: ‘A hydrating serum used underneath your moisturiser will penetrate deep into the skin,
nourishing the bottom layer of cells so when they come to the surface they will be hydrated, plumper and brighter.’

Sun protection is not just for the beach – the UV rays that can cause lines and wrinkles are in the atmosphere 365
days of the year. So if you are concerned about premature ageing, invest in a moisturiser that contains sunscreens or
UV filters.

 Beat the heating
Save the planet as well as your skin by turning the central
heating down a degree or two. Central heating creates a low
humidity environment that literally strips skin of its natural
moisture, while low outdoor temperatures provide a harsh
contrast, meaning skin can become more sensitive.

‘It is estimated that at optimum saturation our skin requires a

minimum of 10 per cent water in the uppermost layers,’ says
Sally Penfold of The International Dermal Institute.

‘Should the relative humidity of our environment drop below

60 per cent, our skin will start to become dehydrated. To put
this into perspective, the average office building has a relative
humidity of 40 per cent and an aircraft cabin has 10-20 per cent
relative humidity. Central heating is renowned for drying the
atmosphere and altering humidity.’

You can counteract the drying effects of your home or office

central heating by placing a bowl of water near the radiator to
put more moisture back into the air.

Love your lips

It’s not just skin that suffers when it’s chilly, lips also need looking after to ensure they stay super-smooth. To de-
flake dry lips, massage with a generous amount of petroleum jelly. Allow to sink in for a couple of minutes, then
gently rub lips with a warm, damp facecloth.

As the jelly is removed, flakes of skin will come with it. Slick on a good lip balm morning and night, and switch to a
nourishing lip colour to prevent that unattractive parched look during the day.

‘Look for a lip balm containing pomegranate or shea butter, as both of these ingredients will give maximum
moisturisation,’ suggests Hannah Cowell.

And according to the experts...

‘During the winter months you may need to give your skin a little extra TLC to combat the combined damaging and
drying effects of the cold weather and central heating.

Look for natural, organic face and body products containing oils rich in essential fatty acids to help replace lost
moisture. Regular facial massage brings much-needed nutrients to the skin: try gently massaging seven drops of
rosehip seed oil, and one drop of Frankincense essential oil into the skin morning and evening to restore smoothness
and radiance.

‘The cause of Acne Rosacea is not known. However it has been recognised that it is mostly found on fair skin types
which have a natural sensitivity to changes in temperature, causing redness and flushing, which in turn weakens the
capillary walls. Keeping the skin at a regular temperature will help and can be achieved by reducing hot drinks, hot
spicy food, excessive sun exposure, alcohol, strenuous exercise and stressful situations. The use of tepid water when
cleansing will also help maintain a regular temperature. Organic rose oil has an anti- inflammatory effect.’

Winter Sun Protection

Q. How do I protect my skin from the sun when I’m exposed to

the winter wind?

A. In winter, the humidity inside houses, offices and schools is

low because of heating systems. Forced-air heating is probably
the most drying (radiator heat is a little less so). When skin is
dry and itchy, winter itch can occur - especially in the elderly
because their skin produces less oil.

And it’s even worse for those of us who enjoy outdoor activities
in snowy climates - there’s the problem of increased exposure to
ultraviolet rays.

For every 1,000 feet of elevation, ultraviolet exposure increases

by about 2 percent. And snow reflects about 80 per cent of the
ultraviolet light, compounding the problem.

Those who are indoors often think that they don’t need
sunscreen. In fact, it is important for people to wear sunscreen
all year long. Even if you are indoors, ultraviolet exposure can
occur through car windows and cause skin problems over the
years. Many people have extra sun damage on the left side of the
face because of sun exposure through the car window.

If you are outside, be sure to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes

before sun exposure to ensure that it absorbs into the skin.
Reapply every two hours.

Keep a lip balm or protector of SPF 15 or higher, and re-use it

every half hour

 10 ways to winterproof your hair

Dull, lifeless, unmanageable locks? Here’s how to turn your

hair into your crowning glory this winter.

Shampoo less
Surprisingly, the air in winter is drier than in summer and, coupled with
central heating, it can make hair drier, too - but at least it’s less inclined
to flop. If you switch to a moisturising shampoo that won’t strip your hair
and the right styling products, you’ll probably be able to squeeze in an
extra day between washes. That means you won’t need to blast your hair
with a dryer as often, which is good news for your hair.

Extra conditioning is essential

Stop hair drying out like straw with a richer conditioner. If the ends are really dry, rinse out your normal
conditioner in the usual way and follow with a leave-in conditioning spray where you need it to help soften and
seal the ends. Treat your hair to an intensive conditioning treatment once a week to increase elasticity, strength
and shine. Some of the best work in under three minutes.

Fight the frizz

Top hairdresser, Richard Ward, advises using nourishing and smoothing shampoos and conditioners to help put
moisture back into the hair. He says, ‘Use a straightening balm on the mid-lengths to the ends and divide your
hair into sections so that you can blow-dry or flat-iron one area at a time. Always point your hairdryer down the
hairshaft to keep the cuticles lying flat and try to keep your hair out of the rain.

Treat your scalp

Freezing cold weather, warm homes and a generally drier atmosphere can take their toll on your scalp. It
becomes drier, flakier and can feel tight and itchy. First give your scalp the gentle brush off to loosen flaky bits,
before using a soothing moisturising shampoo, like Nizoral’s. Stimulate the circulation by massaging your scalp
daily before reaching for stronger, anti-dandruff alternatives.

Tame flyaways
When hair strands are dry and brushing has caused friction, the ions that are produced repel each other, causing
static and annoying flyaways. The newest Ionic hairdryers - from Nicky Clarke Electric and Revlon - release
streams of conditioning opposite ions that surround each hair, to help remove static build-up. Mia McCarthy,
at top South Wales hairdressers, McCarthy’s, says: ‘Static is often a problem for fine hair and using a good
hairspray after styling will help flatten those short strands that refuse to lie down.’

Control wild locks

Curls often need coaxing into a smooth, defined shape. ‘To get control of your hair you need to smooth and
coat it with a product that tames but adds flexibility,’ says celebrity and Royal hairdresser, Denise McAdam.
‘Work a small amount of serum or anti-frizz cream through half-dry hair before blow drying or winding onto
Velcro rollers. Remove them when you’re hair’s dry, or try twisting sections of hair into shape and letting it dry
naturally. Really unruly locks may need the heat of a curling gadget to really get that tousled look.

At war with the elements
‘If your hair fluffs up at the first sign of rain, use a product that will seal the hair shaft and help prevent
moisture from getting in,’ says Charles Worthington, who recommends his Q&A Frizz Humidity Block
Hairspray, to keep your hair smooth and frizz-free. For short hair that needs texturising or sculpting and won’t
flatten completely in the wind, try using a firm hold gel or waxy pomade. And, apart from securing your hair
back into a smooth J-Lo bun or a side plait, a gel spray will help keep curl, body or shape in longer styles.

Hair should shine

Colour doesn’t fade as fast in winter but as your skin is paler, you should go for slightly richer shades. Colour
expert, Lisa Shepherd, advises going for shades you would find in a chocolate box, from caramel to bitter
brown. And use a colour enhancing shampoo/conditioner once a week with a spritz of shine spray to add a
gloss to your hair on gloomy days.

Check your diet

Don’t give in to excessive sweet and stodgy comfort foods, which won’t do much for your hair. Protein and
certain fats are essential for the growth of strong hair that’s in good condition, so include more dairy products,
oily fish such as sardines and salmon; chicken, cereals and vegetable oils. Top hairdresser, Andrew Jose says:
‘Up your zinc, iron and B, C and E vitamins with fresh fruit, green vegetables, wholewheat pasta, brown rice
and pulses’.

Drink more
Water, that is. Since 70 per cent of the body is made of water we have to keep it stocked up, so rehydrate your
hair from the inside by drinking eight glasses a day. Sadly, tea, coffee and alcohol have a dehydrating effect,
so remember to have a glass of water to compensate for each time you have one of them.

 It’s a big year for mascaras! With high-tech designs and brand new

Last spring saw mineral make-up take off in the form of powder and
foundation, and now it’s branching out into mascara and gloss.

even coverage. Nothing short of perfect!

This season the focus is on highlighting cheekbones in pink, but

not like a Russian doll. Use your blusher to sculpt your face and
create cheekbones.
Go for blusher with a light, soft texture. Apply first with a large
brush all over the cheek area, then with a bevel-edged brush on the
cheekbones for an up-to-date look.

The Basics
This season sees make up that is as bold as you imagination, or as sophisticated as black and
white movie stars. Which ever look you are going for a few basic rules apply. Leave the
summer bronze and light pinks behind and bring on the bold and the confident winter colours.
Bases are nude and matte, cheeks are pale peach or a matte pink, lips are red or plump
coloured gloss and eyes are smoky or colourful. A little powder to set the look but not too
much. Brows are prominent this season. Keep a natural shape to them and darken their effect
with a brow filler, stronger than pencils these come in wax, gel or cream alternatives. For
lighter haired people keep to a light medium brown, darker haired people have the option of
dark brown.

Smokey grey eyes.
Not black but just as sophisticated this season sees grey eyes. This look is best achieved with
four tones but three will do just as well. To ensure you get matching tones go for one of the
many palettes on the market. The tones range from charcoal to pale grey highlighter.
The lighter base shade is applied to the entire lid. The darker base is added through the crease.
The darkest tone is kept at the outer corner and the brow line is highlighted, as is the centre of
the lid to open the eye. Blend well.
A grey liner works well, black is bolder depending on your look, do the upper and lower lash
lines, smudge to soften. If you choose add a little of the second lightest tone under the eye.

Cats Eyes
For a bold look choose a liquid or gel liner, kohl works for a more subtle effect, apply
as close as possible to the upper lash line. Create the cat effect by applying the shadow in an
upward sweeping motion away from the eyes then complete the rest of the lid. Apply lots of
mascara.

Bold Colours
This season is seeing a fantastic range of bright colours that are subtle metallics. The choice of
colour is endless but again go for a pallet if you are unsure of matching the tones. For a bolder
look experiment with multiple colours on the eyes. Remember the golden rule that if you have
bright eyes then less on the lips and vice versa.
This is classic fro the rock chick look, non-traditional colours with thin liquid
liner, heavy brows, matte skin so as not to clash with the colour and paler lips.
Rock chick look can also be achieved without the bold colours by focusing on
the eyes with grey tones and pink lips.

Red Lips
The retro chic look cries out red lips. With many products on the market choose a red to match

precision in the look go for a red close to your natural colour so that when it wears away it will
not appear messy and smudged. Also lip liner works well with this look. If going for the red

Q Hi Girls,
I wondered if you could help me. I consider myself a
female illusionist rather than a TV , but my problem is
probably universal. My partner has recently found out
about my dressing and, although not completely against
it, is finding it pretty hard to get her head round. She
has known now for several months , but things are still
strained. Do the girls think I should stop dressing to please
my partner?

A There seems to be a trend in the community for those that dress

to be in denial. They concoct new ‘labels’ for themselves just so
they don’t have to admit they are TV. Sorry, female illusionist is
just another such label. If you cannot accept who you are, how can
you expect your partner too? Tell her you are a tranny and like to
dress up, bottom line. She can probably get her head round that.
Whereas female illusionist, what the hell is that? I am sorry if you
think I am being too hard but sometime we need the hard truth.

Once she knows exactly what you are, then see if she is willing speak to you
about it. Tell her why you like it and how far you want to go with it. She may
well have loads of worst case scenario’s going round in her head and you
need to put her straight. Be truthful. I have lived by the following all my life
‘always tell the truth, that way you don’t have to remember which lie you
told’. Tell lies and you will get caught out and any trust/respect she may have
for you will be gone, possibly for ever.

 As for you trying to stop dressing to please you partner, then that will never
work. You know you cannot do that. You may stop for a while but you will be
drawn back to it again and you’ll hide till you get caught. Besides we are all
entitled to have some enjoyment out of life. If you enjoy it why should you
stop? If she truly loves then she should accept everything about you. Expressing
this female side is just part of who you are. Restrict that part and you become
someone else.

A Hi there,
Hmmm, difficult one this but deep down in your heart I think you
already know that if you stopped dressing just to please someone
else no matter how much they meant to you, you’d regret it in the
long run.

You have a starting point that your partner already knows about your dressing
and has done for some time now. Naturally, this is going to take some
adjustment for her but you have a point that you can both work from. I assume
you’ve both already spoken about this matter together but maybe by talking
about it together and trying to find out exactly what her concerns might be you
may be able to alleviate some of them by answering them honestly and openly.
I think this is just going to be a case of slowly, slowly, day by day and see what
the future holds. I wish you both every luck and happiness in your journey
forwards.

A Now then, here is a situation that myself and many girls have been in,
and a very scary and insecure time it is too.

What you have to take into account is the total turn-around in your
relationship that your wife is faced with, my own wife didn’t speak to
me for 3 whole days! and she calls this her ‘thinking’ time, the time
she needed just to get her head round the facts, after that it was many
YEARS not months that the trust had to be rebuilt.

It will take her a long while, but she is still there, and that is a HUGE start, many just
up and go, but one issue that doesnt seem to cross peoples minds, and one that, after
asking around, seems to be pretty universal. The hurt in many cases is not the dress-
ing side of our Transgenderism, but the fact we felt we could not trust them with our
secret that hurts them the most, so that is one issue you should work on first and fore-
most, get the trust back in your relationship.

Secondly, I know this sounds a lil harsh , but DONT tell your girlfriend EVERY-
THING. Its a shock enough learning you are a crossdresser without you giving her
every little detail. I dont mean lie, but ‘some’ details dont need to be shared, if you
know what I mean!

But, in answer to your main question, my advice would be NOT to stop dressing, at
the height of my problems at home I too considered this , and it drove me the nearest
I have ever been to suicide, I just couldnt do it, and you would probably find that it
would end your relationship a lot sooner than your crossdressing ever would.

You are you, your partner is with you because they love you, bones and all. I get asked
many times how my wife copes with my dressing, the simple answer is, I am still the
same person she married, just look a hell of a lot prettier!

So, still dress, but discuss some rules that would make you both more comfortable, get
her to voice her fears and work WITH them , not against them, its a long journey, but ,
hell girl, its worth it!

So, there ya go, a simple premise, you have a problem, why not ask the girls?

My name is Tina Steier. I am a 45 year-old CDer from Cincinnati, Ohio. I have been cross
dressing since I was 5 years old but I have been Tina since I was born. True story. My
parents named me Tina. When I was born, my mother was knocked out and my dad was in
the waiting room. The nurse accidentally put a pink bracelet on me after I was born, so, when
my parents first saw me, they thought I was a girl and named me Tina. It wasn’t until later
that they discovered the mistake. My mom and dad always told me that story. I knew it was
DESTINY.

I have been on the web now since 1998. Getting online was a liberating experience for me.
I only knew how I felt about cross dressing, what I read in clinical books and what I saw on
shows like Maury Povich and Gerri Springer. I really thought I was alone. I was shocked to
find a world with people dealing with the same issues I was, that totally accepted me for who
I was. I was helped IMMENSELY with my first website by Vicki Rene and Tiffany Michelle,
both of whom I owe a great debt of gratitude, as well as my friend from Cincinnati Amlou,
who gave me a place to dress and a place to store my clothes for years. Since then, I feel as if

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is essential to keep your teeth and mouth
healthy.
Your mouth contains bacteria, which live on your teeth, gums, lips and tongue. Some bacteria can be
healthy in the right place, at the right time and in the right numbers. Our body needs this ‘friendly
bacteria’. But other bacteria can be harmful and cause problems, especially if they attach themselves to
the enamel that covers your teeth in the form of plaque.
Plaque is a film of bacteria that coats the teeth. The bacteria then feed on the sugars in our food and
drink and produce acids that can destroy tooth enamel and cause decay.
If you don’t brush your teeth properly or look after your gums, these bacteria can multiply to form
plaque. Plaque is the enemy of healthy teeth, contributing to gum disease, tooth decay and cavities.

Should I use an electric or manual toothbrush?

The type of toothbrush you use is important. For most adults a brush with a small head and a compact,
angled arrangement of long and short, round-end bristles (filaments) is fine. Medium or soft bristles
are best for most people. If in doubt ask your dentist.
An electric brush with an oscillating or rotating head will reduce plaque and the risk of developing
gum disease more effectively.

What type of toothpaste should I use?

The cleansing agents and particles in toothpaste help to remove the plaque from your teeth, keeping
them clean and healthy.
Most toothpastes contain fluoride, which helps to prevent and control cavities. It’s important to use one
with the right concentration of fluoride for you, or your child. Check the packaging to find out how
much fluoride each brand contains.
Children aged up to three: use a smear of toothpaste containing no less than 1,000ppm fluoride.
This means you can use the family toothpaste, not a special baby toothpaste, even at this age.
Children aged three to six: use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500ppm
fluoride.
Adults: use a toothpaste containing at least 1,350ppm fluoride.

Brushing tips
The British Dental Health Foundation gives the following advice on how to brush your teeth.
Place the head of your toothbrush against your teeth, then tilt the bristle tips to a 45 degree angle
against the gum line. Move the brush in small circular movements, several times, on all the surfaces
of every tooth.
Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower, keeping the bristles angled against the gum
line.
Use the same method on the inside surfaces of all your teeth.
Brush the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several small circular
strokes with the toe (the front part) of the brush.
Brushing your tongue will help freshen your breath and will clean your mouth by removing bacteria.

Flossing
Flossing isn’t just a way to dislodge food wedged between your teeth. Regular flossing may help to reduce
gum disease and bad breath by helping to remove the bacterial film (plaque) that forms along the gum line.

How to floss:
Take 12 to 18 inches of floss and grasp it so that you have a couple inches of floss taut between your
hands.
Slip the floss between the teeth and into the area between your teeth and gums as far as it will go.
Floss with eight to 10 strokes, up and down between each tooth, to dislodge food and plaque.
Floss at least once a day. The most important time to floss is before going to bed.
You can floss either before or after brushing.

Should I use mouthwash?

Mouthwashes containing fluoride can be beneficial. Some may contain chlorhexidine or other antiseptic
chemicals. These may be effective in improving plaque control and gum health when used as well as tooth
brushing, or alone if you are unable to brush your teeth for some reason. But mouthwashes containing
essential oils or other chemicals aren’t as effective.
Also remember that many mouthwashes may contain alcohol, so they aren’t suitable for children who
could swallow it by accident. If you use a mouthwash with alcohol you may notice you get a very dry
mouth and dry, cracked lips. This is due to the drying effect of the alcohol and can be remedied by using
an alcohol-free mouthwash instead and by applying lip balm or vaseline to the lips.
The little extras
Toothpicks Avoid using toothpicks as you may cause your gums to bleed and cause an infection. Floss
is more gentle on teeth and gums.
Interdental brushes These offer a better way to clean between your teeth than toothpicks.
Plaque disclosing tablets These work by dyeing plaque either blue or red. Because they dye all
bacteria and your mouth contains a lot of ‘friendly’ bacteria the tongue and gums also get dyed. You
don’t need to clean this off, but as the staining can last for some hours, it’s best to use these tablets
at bedtime, or when you aren’t expecting visitors.
Toothbrush tips
Replace your brush, or the brush attachment, every three months.
Never share your toothbrush, as this can spread infections.
Brush twice daily for at least two minutes, using fluoride toothpaste.

Teeth whitening tips
Learning as many teeth whitening tips as you can will only help to make sure that your teeth are perfectly white
and you have a great smile. But obviously just knowing the tips won’t make your teeth white unless you
actually put some of them into practice! The easiest and most cost effective way people use to make their
teeth a whiter colour is to use teeth whitening kits which you can buy off-the-shelf from most chemists or
pharmacies. Even supermarkets are now starting to stock a wide range of teeth whitening products due to the
popularity of this new health regime.

Many teeth whitening products to will simply bleach your teeth so that they appear to be a much whiter colour
than they actually are. This is quite often the only way especially if you have been smoking or drinking hot
drinks for a long period of time. The teeth get stained quite easily and over time this staining simply cannot be
easily reversed. So people bleach their teeth every so often to cover up these stains. This is an ongoing process
depending on which typr of whitening product you are using. Teeth whitening mouthpieces are becoming quite
popular and involve placing a mouthpiece filled with whitening gel into your mouth for at least an hour a day.
This method works well but can be time consuming and simply not practical if you lead a busy lifestyle.

The simplest of all systems is to have laser teeth whitening. This is

just a one off procedure you have which gives you instant white teeth that
will stay that way for many months. You should ask your dentist if they
can carry out this procedure for you. For more teeth whitening tips, why
not have a look online. You’ll find lots of great websites that will teach
you all you need to know about teeth whitening and teeth whitening products.

 Having teeth whitening treatment
If you are serious about making your teeth whiter then maybe having teeth
whitening treatment is the answer to your prayers. This type of treatment
is the easiest and quickest way you will improve the colour of your teeth.
It involves bleaching the teeth to make them more naturally lighter in
colour. It also helps to remove any stains that have built up over time.
Having teeth whitening treatment will be the most expensive way to make
your teeth whiter. It must be performed by a suitably qualified person,
usually your regular dentist can perform such treatment and it will last
for a few weeks in total.

The first treatment will involve a sitting with your dentist who will
apply teeth whitening gel to your teeth and then use a special light or
laser to ensure the gel sets and will last for the duration. You will then
probably be given a special mouthpiece that you can use from home to keep
applying the gel. You will normally do this at least once a day and it
helps to make sure the gel starts to bleach the teeth correctly.

A cheaper form of teeth whitening treatment can be purchased over the counter from your chemist. This
usually consists of whitening gel that is applied the same way and maybe even toothpaste which contains
whitening gel which is used twice a day. These strong bleaches will cover up any stains on your teeth but
due to the amount of strong chemicals in them, many dentists do not recommend the over the counter
styles. They say they are a short term fix which may lead to long term problems with tooth decay. So you
should choose wisely which treatment you have and do as much research as you can.

Using teeth whitening gel

Having a great smile can really make a difference in your life. Not only
in your personal life but also in your business life too. Let’s face it,
no-one likes to look at someone’s smile if their teeth are dark and
stained. It simply just gives the wrong impression. But if your teeth are
white and sparkling then that will do you a lot of favors in your everyday
life. Imagine what a difference it will make if you didn’t have to shy
away from smiling anymore but you had the confidence to have a big grin
and really light the room up! OK, not literally but it really makes a
difference. Teeth whitening gel is one of the fastest methods of getting a
bright white gleaming smile.

You can purchase teeth whitening gel off the shelf from your local chemist or pharmacy. Some of them are used
daily to increase the whiteness of your teeth over time. This breaks down the stains and allows for a more
natural colour of your teeth. Many types of toothpaste now contain whitening gel and this is a relatively cheap
way of improving the colour of your teeth. Although it won’t happen overnight and you’ll probably not see any
changes for at least a few weeks. But it does work as long as you are strict with following the instructions to the
letter on the packet. If you forget to brush your teeth or don’t use that particular toothpaste, then don’t expect
to see any changes. Simple as that!

He may even be able to provide laser teeth whitening which is a more instant and permanent solution. Just ask
them and they are sure to give you a full list of what they can provide.You can talk to your dentist about which
treatment would suit you best.

 For Carollyn Olson, the last 12 months has been a whirlwind.

C “It’s been the most exciting time of my life,” said Carollyn. “I never
thought so many positive things would happen to little ol’ me.”
Carollyn, the Narcisse Magazine July/August Centerfold, was
bubbling with excitement during a recent interview.

A “Being named Centerfold was such a surprise and honor,” said

Carollyn, a Northern California resident, who is also an author,
founder of the Mature Woman Group and Post Mistress for the
prestigious Vanity Club.

R “I’ve been so fortunate to do so many things. I’ve written one book

and co-authored another and have made so many friends in person
and on the internet from around the world. I’m still overwhelmed
with all this.”

O Carollyn, who recently celebrated her 56th birthday, has been cross
dressing for more than 25 years. For years Carollyn, also known by
her nickname “CC”, was semi-closeted, but broke out of her cocoon
about 15 years ago.

L “I never knew there were so many other girls like me until I went
on the internet,” said Carollyn. “For years I just dressed at home
and never had the nerve to go out. But, after getting encouragement
from others and with the assistance from two wonder friends, I said

L ‘to heck with it’ and went out. I haven’t stopped.”

Carollyn usually goes out during the day, visiting or shopping with
both GG and CD friends, or having lunch with the girls.
“I just love to look the best I can and to get out like any other lady,”

Y Carollyn added. “I also enjoy helping others fulfill their dreams. If I

can do it, anybody can.
Earlier this year, Carollyn released her first book “Deception: A
Novel of Cross Dressing and Espionage” and recently completed

N a three author paperback “TG Short Stories.” She has started on a

third book, which should be completed by the end of the year.
“I never thought I would write a book on cross dressing,” said
Carollyn. “A had an idea and with the insistance of a few friends, I
decided to give it a try. I published the book myself and have sold
about 100 copies. I still have a few left, if anybody is interested.
“Stephanie Marie and Silke Loretta Martin collaborated with me in
‘Short Stories.’ We each wrote completely different stories. Mine

O story was semi-fiction. I got the idea from a friend who writes me
from time to time. I think it turned out well.

Three years ago, Carollyn and friend Linda Holmes founded the
Mature Women Group, an internet club for “those of us over 50, or

S so” laughed Carollyn. “Linda did lots of work and discovered the
lack of groups for the older cross dresser. So we decided to start
something new. Now we have close to 700 members.”
Carollyn has also served for two years as the Post Mistress for the

Vanity Club.
“I love the job,” she said. “I get to answer e-mail to the group and
help prospective members with information and applications.”
What does the future hold?

“I’m not sure,” said Carollyn, who recently attended the Sparkle
Gala in Sacramento and had her first public book signing. “I would
like to retire in a few years and that could put a limit on my life as
a female. But, I plan to just take one step at a time and continue to
enjoy my ‘hobby’ as long as I can.”

Flying. As Jennifer I haven’t flown in 20 years but here I

N am flying from LAX to DTW. On the outbound (in drab) I

talked to a TSA supervisor. I told him I was transitioning
to become a woman but I would still be in my male ID for

some time. He took it like it was no big deal, no problem,
just show two pieces of picture ID like your drivers license
and your passport. (He also mentioned Social Security card
which is not a picture ID.) ��On the return, as Jennifer,

I I used my drivers license and a photocopy of my DL with

a picture of me as Jennifer attached and the note that, “the
person hereon is transgendered and is not dressed in this

manner for fraudulent or deceptive purposes.” I also carried
a letter from my transgender councilor which I did not have
to use. I look nothing like my picture in male mode. (The
first time I visited my transgender councilor as Jennifer

E she comment that she wouldn’t have recognized me if she

hadn’t seen pictures of me as Jennifer.)� �For the trip I
was dressed much like my pictures, red hair, face lightly

made up, wearing a green, low cut sweater that showed lots
of cleavage a white, 17 inch, mini skirt and white heels. I
saw one of my VC girl friends, Espy Lopez, while I was in
LA and she thought I looked great in this outfit. ��When
I went through TSA security I was wearing an underbust
corset. (I had decided that my figure was a first priority.)
I knew I would flunk the metal detector but, so what. I

flunked. ��ID security passed me with my two pieces of
picture ID but I did have to go through a wanding and pat
down. The lady who did me was very polite and treated me
like a lady. ��I had been upgraded to Business Class and

E enjoyed the pampering all the way to Detroit. At all points

of the trip I was treated as a lady and often received smiles
from other women. My biggest problem was having to

wrestle my luggage into and out of the airports. I pack way
too much stuff. � I cherish my time as Jennifer and love to
put myself in challenging (but safe) situations. I am a better
woman for it. I’m going to be flying as Jennifer a lot more

S often.

SCC ’08. I’ve just returned from the Southern Comfort

Conference. Ahead of SCC, I flew as Jennifer to Florida and
spent several days with Chryss, a dear friend and TG sister
in the Vanity Club.
All told, I spent 9 days 24/7 as Jennifer. I flew from Austin,

N TX to Jacksonville, FL in two flights as Jennifer. I felt

totally at home as my female self and had no problems with
TSA or anyone else. As best I can tell, I am perceived as a
female, which makes me very happy.

Paris with my French Vanity Club sister Jocelyne.
It was her first time out in public and although the
N logistics were formidable, we had a wonderful
time.
I During the same trip, I came out to the first person

F (aside from my wife) who knew me first in my

male life. A very dear Belgian GG friend was so
wonderful and supportive I was moved to (lots
E of) tears. As a matter of fact, we are planning an
evening out together with me en femme later this
R month while she is visiting us in California!

In addition to (far too few) visits with my

best friend Lisah Aubergine in San Jose, I had
two other particularly pleasant outings this
W year. The first was a lovely (if altogether too
short) afternoon out of shopping and lunch in
I Sacramento with my good friend Carollyn Olson.

L The other was a recent get together with the lovely

and wonderful Miranda Skye in San Francisco.
This visit was long delayed from earlier when
L I foolishly spent most of the night before my
scheduled visit in an extended photoshoot and was
I subsequently too exhausted after two hours sleep
to go to “The City By The Bay”! Needless to say,

A I received a great deal of (well deserved) grief for

that one! Miranda was a perfectly gracious hostess
when I finally did make it up and introduced me
M to several of the local beauties (as well as the
dangerously seductive martinis at Martunis!)

so, there have been a couple ‘highlights..help make life
worth living :) Back in April I took off for a week to Las Vegas
(actually my Birthday week) and linked up with a gang
of other girls there for the annual ‘Viva Las Vegas’ . Not a TG

convention, more of a decentralized TG holiday with daily
link-ups with other girls for outings, night life etc. We had an
All TG Golf ‘Tournament’ one day which was a lot of fun.
One of the evenings a group of us visited a famous
whorehouse way out in the desert..the ‘Chicken Ranch’..used

‘Best lil Whorehouse in Texas’ till Texas threw them out.
Every one of the House ladies was ‘drop dead’ gorgeous, and
the evening was primarily to provide a fun break for the girls.
We played silly games like ‘pass the boob’ and ‘pass the

played. Las Vegas is Disneyworld for grownups. Once is
enough,
but I’ll probably go back with my wife so she can go crazy in
some super shops (after we win the lottery)
Back home after that hectic week, it was time to get the
surgery done on my ageing eyes . New lens’ implanted in each
eye. Every thing is back in ‘technicolour’ now.
The annual Southern Comfort Conference is just over, a ton of
fun and hard work. Hard work cos I’m on the planning

B committee and responsible for organizing a bunch of vendors

selling goods and services in the SCC ‘Marketplace’.
SCC is the largest trans conference in the world and attracts
girls from all over the US and often from all over the world.

Nothing much on for the rest of the year, Halloween is a
biggish deal over here, so I’ll probably join friends for a bash
that evening. You’d think it would be easy to find a nice fitting
leather bra (38D) to go with black leather pants and jacket,
but no. All I’ve found so far are two sizes, way too big and

Next thing we know it’ll be Christmas, and I’ll probably,
against my better judgment, give in and send out ‘Gina
under the Christmas Tree’ pictures. 10 years ago I swore I’d
never bother again. Now I wish I’d kept each years ‘under

We all have a list of firsts, our first skirt, first full day
dressed, for some of us our first time out, but this month was a ‘big-
gy’ for me.
As some of you know, a fair few of my work collegues know
about me, some have even seen pics , read Narcisse, etc, but an op-
portunity came up this month that was half forced/half craved, so I
went for it, allow me to explain.
We have , at work, a new Personel Manager, Jackie, wife of one
of the other managers. Straight away we hit it off, and it was pretty
obvious that she ‘knew’ about me. We got to chatting about this and
that, and specifically about a new notice board that she had put up
in the canteen. Some of my collegues had already put pictures of
their kids, pets, holidays etc on it, and thats when she said the im-
mortal words.......
I DARE YOU!_

 Hmmm, could I? should I? How could I not!!!
So, next morning I took in a small selection to show her. Without
pausing for breath she grabbed two and pinned them up, the deed
was done.
After a rather ‘distracted’ morning I ventured into the canteen
at lunch, a few of my driends were there ( who know ) and they were
already agog and giggling. “Your brave!” was the general concensus
of opinion , but once i told them the tale they were all for it.
A steady stream of people came and went, many of them paus-
ing to look at the board and the reactions were AMAZING!
“ Who’s that?”.......” Who’s daughter is that?”.....”WOW!” to name but
a few, my friends and I were in hysterics!
Over the course of the day word got about and all my fears driz-
zled out as, to a man/woman, the reaction was BITCH - from the
girls, BLOODY HELL - from the guys, and from everybody a need to
know more. In one fell swoop I got the opportunity to ‘educate’ another
50+ people, all of who we interested, non-judgemental, and now, a lot
more understanding of the TG community.
The overall feedback was,
1 - you look amazing
2 - good on you
3 - who does your make-up!
I know I’m fortunate, dont get me wrong, its not ‘all’ plain
sailing, but out of 100 people there is only one bad apple, who is now
making herself look extremely stupid and isolated, and I personally
have found this to be the case. Nowadays more and more want to be
educated rather than have an immediate knee-jerk reaction, there are
fewer and fewer bigots and it is now getting to be the case that THEY
are the minority, not us!

 But, thats not the end of the tale, by any means, for it just so
happened that all this happened but a few short weeks before that
date in the calendar when a lot of trans-girls grab the opportunity
to dress with both hands, I talk, of course of Halloween!
The talk around store was now centred on ‘will you wont you’
and if so....WHAT IN!!! The main concencus of opinion went with
me going as a She-Devil, and so the hard work began - working on
my wife!
After much wrangling, pleading and generally wearing her
down, she finally agreed to it, so next was the outfit. As you know
, I am very subtle, so decided upon, red thigh-hi 4” boots, red skin-
ny jeans ( a mini just wasnt practical alas ) tight red T, red shrug,
ponytail, and full make-up. All this was well and good, but one
problem arose and that was ‘ boobs or no boobs ?’ Do I scare the gen-
eral public any more than is necessary? But that was something I
would decide on the day, take them and see.

31st October soon came, I had packed my bag the night before,
so set off nice and early. I was meant to start work at 11am, so got
there for 9.15am, plenty of time to get dressed AND have a cuppa
and a chat before work.
It didnt take long before I realised that only one other girl had
dressed!! The seeds of doubt began to set in , not only was this to be
the first time my collegues had seen me dressed, but also I was go-
ing to stand out like a sore thumb as I would be the only one on the
shop floor dressed for halloween!!!
One EXTREMELY deep breath later I decided to go for it, I
grabbed my bag, gave a “ Tonight Matthew I’m going to be.....” to
my friends, and off i trotted to the Mensroom.

 The rest is a kind of a blur, only once, right at the beginning ,
when the outfit was on and I was doing my hair did I think “ What
the bloody hell are you doing?” but that passed and soon I was fully
dressed, a few friends had popped in to use the loo, this drew a few
gasps, a few giggles, one ‘oh sorry’ ( he wondered why there was
a woman in the Gents! ) and ( my favorite) my friend Les, who
walked in , said “ only 11 cages of delivery today mate “ and left as
if it was just a normal day!
Another HUGE intake of breath later I emerge from the Men-
sroom and made my way to the Canteen, a very surreal experience,
being the first time from the perspective of 4” stiletto heels! Once in
the canteen all hell broke loose!!! My close friends just grinned, the
rest swore, gaped, and more than a few took a while to get who I was.
The whole reaction was 100% positive, everyone thought I looked great,
and quite a few of the girls called me a bitch ( which can only be
good!!!)

Now came the BIGGY! Meeting the public, our store houses an av-
erage of 1000 people, plus the fact that it was Friday, PLUS the fact
that the kids were on holiday ( I couldnt have picked a busier day!)
My plan of action was to walk out, down aisle 14 then walk the full
length of the store in front of Check-outs, i.e. where the most people
would be - if your going to do it, then get it over with asap!!!
The trick, I have found, for situations like this is - dont look
people in the eye - makes you less nervous - so off I trotted, periferal
vision told me all I needed to know as I strutted my stuff and wig-
gling my red PVC tail from one end of the store to the other..

WHAT A BUZZ!!!!!!!!!!!

 The day was a resounding success, the reactions were amazing,
and i put a smile on so many faces it was worth all the effort, I had
such an amazing time, I would recommend it to ANYONE!
Sadly, at 6.00pm it was time to dress down, and so Mandy
was packed away till the end of the shift.
Next day the positive vibes continued, from my friends was a
chorus of well done, from the public, the same, and from manage-
ment, the most overwhelming response of all! They asked me did I
want to come to work full-time as mandy and if so to let them know
so they can order me a new uniform!!
Alas, this can never be, my wife puts up with enough already,
and this would be a step too far, but......if only!!

My great friend jules telling me she was so proud of me and that I

was an ambassador.

I have tears in my eyes just writing it...............

Bi-dentity card
BRITS undergoing a sex change
are to be allowed two national ID
cards, one male and one female.
The Government yesterday revealed they are making
special provisions for people with a “dual-gendered
life” — like Big Brother’s Nadia Almada.
The 31-year-old Portuguese bank clerk, originally
named Carlos, had a sex-swap op to become a woman
before entering the Channel 4 house in 2004.
Under the rules, one card will record the holder’s old
identity, the other their new one. But those midway
through the process must pay twice for the £30 cards.
Draft legislation published by the Home Office said
pre-op transsexuals “can hold a National Identity card
which can be used for travel in one gender, as well as
an Identification Card which is not valid for travel but
can be used to prove their identity in a second gender
reliably and securely and reflects a different name,
signature and photograph”.
Foreign nationals living in Britain will begin receiving
the cards next week, and trials at two airports start next
month.
Britons and citizens from Europe will start to receive
the cards from autumn 2009.
Large-scale issuing of cards — at a cost of £4.78billion
over ten years — begins in 2011 or 2012.

The new rules also say that women who marry and fail
to change their name on their card could be fined up to
£1,000.
Penalties will also apply to people who fail to report their
cards lost or stolen.
Fines starting at £125 for the first infringement will
normally only be imposed on those persistently refusing
to have their data updated. A Home Office spokesman
said the civil penalties are not intended to be severe or
revenue-raising.
He added: “We would always encourage people to update
their information voluntarily but in some cases we would
apply a basic penalty.”
However shadow home secretary Dominic Grieve said:
“At a time of economic hardship, the public will be
dismayed the Government plans to fine innocent people
for inaccuracies on the Government’s own database,
using summary powers.”
Homeless people wanting ID cards may be able to give
their address as a bench, bus stop or park where they are
often found.
Addresses will be recorded on the register but will not
appear on the card.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho not only jumpstarted the modern horror film, it also
introduced a new kind of villain to movie audiences – the transexual killer. The
climactic image of a crazed, knife wielding Norman Bates, dressed up like mommy
was a perverse shock for the conservative movies audiences of the early sixties.
Infused with the kind of psycho-sexual undercurrents that shockmeister filmmakers
love to exploit, the Trans-Killer sub-genre grew out of the matchbook psychobabble
on serial killers that began to proliferate after Psycho’s success and the sensational
true life crimes of crazy fuckers like Ed Gein and the Zodiac Killer. So movie
villains of classic bygone horror films, the mischievous dandies, megalomaniacal
super villains and supernatural creatures , were no longer effective. The modern day
boogeyman was the next door neighbor that volunteered at the church picnic but
kept a collection of prostitute torsos in his basement freezer. This idea of the duality
of the psycho killer is what Psycho wrought and it is what the Trans-Killer sub-
genre is, essentially, powered by. What better way to dramatize the split mind of the
psychopath than to have a killer who cant even reconcile their own gender.

PSYCHO opened the door and suddenly villainous trannies became very popular.
One of the earliest, and best transsexual villains was in the 1968 Japanese cult film
BLACK LIZARD. Drag Artist Akihiro Miwa made a grand super villain, dressed in
flowing chiffon and twirling about with every dramatic gesture. The Hammer film
DR. JEYKLL AND SISTER HYDE (1971) had Ralph Bates turning into Martine
Beswick with the aide of an elixir made from the female hormones of murdered
prostitutes. Naturally, Sister Hyde is even more evil and sadistic than her crazed
alter ego.

Audiences also had to endure the horrifying sight of Rod Steiger dressed in drag in
the brilliant black comic thriller, NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY (1968). Steiger’s
drag act was just one of his serial killers’ hammy disguises. But the truly brutal
psycho tranny started to appear in movies like BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE
DOLLS (1970), and FREEBIE AND THE BEAN (1974). In Dolls, the flamboyant
record producer Z-MAN, played with vile glee by John LaZar, goes on a sudden,
shockingly violent rampage and murders everyone at a sleazy Hollywood orgy
when his “secret” is exposed. And Richard Rush’s Freebie and the Bean has James
Caan getting his ass whooped in a ladies restroom by a vicious, cross dressing killer
played by Christopher Morley. Most often the transsexual killer is revealed in a
cheap twist at a films climax. As in one of my favorite bad slasher movies FATAL
GAMES (1984), where a conveniently placed newspaper reveals the killers true
identity to his/her final victim. And sometimes the tranny killer twist can be a
complete surprise as in one of Roger Corman’s best, cheap, late night cable thrillers
STRIPPED TO KILL (1987).
The films in this sub-genre span the varying levels of the cinematic quality. Oscar
winning filmmakers, schlock purveyors and many a nobody have all had a go at the
tranny killer theme. Admitedly, these films are not politically correct and in some
cases they are downright offensive to transgender people. But, political correctness
aside, they do, in some cases, successfully exploit the uncomfortable feelings most
people still have about gender and sexuality. For the lazy writer the transsexual
angle is an easy way to dramatize a killers dual personality and exploit an audiences
ingrained prejudicesand fears and touch on certain undercurrents of misogyny and
homophobia that are uncomfortable but can also make for disturbing and gripping
filmmaking.

So, though no one asked or was looking for it, here is Horroryearbook’ s list of the
TOP 15 TRANSEXUAL KILLER MOVIES as decided by me, Gary G, the worlds
foremost transsexual killer movie expert.

SPOLIER ALERT: Be advised that the transsexual angle in some of these films
comprises that films twist ending. Most of the listed titles are well known to the
casual horror fan but some titles are relatively obscure. I won’t reveal any clues to the
identity of the trans-killer in any movie but if you see a title listed here you will know
that the film has a transsexual twist to it. Fair-Warning.

15. TERROR FIRMER (1999) Sick. Twisted. Perverted. Disgusting. It’s Troma.
The venerable Lloyd Kaufman directs one of Troma’s best latter year films. A
psychopathic tranny, played with no shame by Wil Keenan, is slaughtering the crew
of some crappy low-budget movie. Dismemberments, castrations, genital mutilations,
fetus’ ripped from the womb and every conceivable bodily fluid are just some of the
cinematic offenses offered up by Kaufman and team, which includes co-screenwriter
Douglas Buck who is known more for his artsy short horror films Home and Cutting
Moments.

Terror Firmer is total gross-out splatstick so it’s in no way scary but that’s not the
point. The trans-killer here is just part of the perverted wallpaper. But he/she remains
one of the most vile villains in recent memory. Not for the squeamish, as if I had to
say that.

14. UNHINGED (1982) Three stupid college coeds’ car breaks down in the middle of
nowhere and they end up taking shelter in a huge, dark, rambling mansion inhabited
by an elderly, aristocratic snob and her tightly wound daughter. Those coeds end up
in an unfortunate way. But I saw that coming. It’s an early eighties slasher movie!
What I didn’t see coming was the suddenly out of nowhere transsexual twist that
ends this crazy fucking movie. Once one of Britain’s Video Nasties, Unhinged had a
small rep overseas but sat mostly ignored on video store shelves in the states. So this
films transsexual twist was well guarded when I finally found my way to it in the mid
nineties. The murders are nasty and bloody and director Don Gronquist gives the film
a nice, poverty row, gothic feel but, to be honest, this movie is as slow as a geriatric
bowel movement. So the trans twist at the films end is a nice jolt after the nap you
will invariably wake up from. The definite whiff of misogyny in the final brutal
murder gives the ending a shocking punch. You simply aren’t expecting it from what
has been aby the numbers slasher.

13. VULTURES (1983) An utterly forgotten camp fest with sub tv movie production
values, unintentional comedy, horribly benumbed acting and starring the trash-
horror- movie tri-fecta of Stuart Whitman, Yvonne DeCarlo, and Aldo Ray. Vultures
still manages to be one of the most entertaining crappy slasher movies on this list. A
wealthy old man dies and the heirs to his fortune start to get butchered one by one.
Like Unhinged this movie is filled with very bloody murders, and it’s trans twist is
a big surprise but Vultures is fun in a way that Unhinged never is. While it kind of
looks like an old episode of Colombo, the mystery of WHO is killing off the heirs
to the family fortune is very good, resulting in an ending that is as hilarious as it is
surprising. And a very well known entertainer makes a cameo that you won’t forget.

12. William Castle’s HOMICIDAL (1961) was the first post-Psycho rip-off. Castle
shamelessly borrows the Hitchcock films prologue of the icy blond temptress on the
run from the law. But here it is the blond temptress, played by Jean Arliss, who is
the psycho, murdering anyone who comes between her and her horrible secret. Can
you figure out that secret? Huh. I’ll give you TWO guesses. While the secret may
be utterly obvious to anyone with halfway decent eyesight Castle’s film is totally
enjoyable and quite spooky at times. Castle was a huckster but he was good at
crafting a successful suspense scene. You should also check out his underrated spook-
fest The Night Walker. No trannies in it but its scary as hell anyway.

11. REFLECTION OF FEAR (1973) An atmospheric, sad, disturbing, 70’s psycho-

thriller that has been overlooked for decades. There is a trans-twist here that, like
many of these films, seems to come out of nowhere. But that does not distract from
what is such an unsettling and suspenseful horror-thriller. Robert Shaw returns to his
home town with his new wife, played by Sally Kellerman.
His ex-wife and mother in law are raising the daughter he barely knows in relative
cloister in a huge, dark, mansion. A series are of shocking murders follows. Filled
with shadowy cinematography by the great Lazlo Kovacs, great performances, eerie
atmosphere and loaded with all kinds of Freudian psycho-drama, Reflections of Fear
is a film that should have a bigger following than it does.

10. Dario Argento’s 4 FLIES ON GREY VELVET (1971) is the typical Psycho-
inspired, Italian giallo. It also offers up one of the most stupid motives in a sub-genre
brimming with dumb motives. The trans-killer element is actually well hidden so it’s
revelation is kind of a surprise but, again, the killers excuse for his rampage is all

kinds of WTF. But Argento’s stylistic command and grotesque flourishes make this a
very strong giallo. Shamefully 4 Flies remains unseen to many horror fans because it
has never had an official video or DVD release in the states. It’s pretty easy to find a
bootleg and I’m sure it will find it’s way to DVD eventually.

9. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1990) This now classic, Oscar winning thriller
is an arguable choice for this list. The trans twist is a minor point of the story of
Buffalo Bill, the hulking, retarded, psycho who is making a lady suit out of real
female flesh. We never really see Bill wearing that suit or even really see him kill
anyone. But Silence of the Lambs is on this list because of one scene and one scene
only. You know which one I’m talking about. It has haunted my own personal
nightmares for years and I’m sure I’m not the only one. BUFFALO BILL’S DRESS
UP SCENE! As the senator’s daughter tries to lure Precious, the dog, into the pit
where she’s imprisoned, Buffalo Bill pretties himself up; fingering his pierced nipples,
coloring his chapped lips, whispering “will you FUCK ME”, prancing around with his
dick tucked between his legs, while wearing sheer light blue stockings and a giant
multicolored cape, dancing to the techno thump of the song “Goodbye Horses” by
Q Lazzarus. A sequence of such derange brilliance that it alone justified Jonathan
Demme’s Oscar for Best Director. EWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

8. PRIVATE PARTS (1972) Here is some more cinematic EWWWWWWWWWW.

Paul Bartel’s creepy, intensely weird, perverted comic-thriller Private Parts. A
slutty runaway ends up at her crazy Aunt Martha’s Skid Row flop house. A macabre
assortment of oddballs and lowlifes and one vicious slasher killer also reside at the
decrepit flea pit. It ends with one of the most depraved sex encounters I’ve ever seen

in a non-porno.
Bartel does wonders in creating a kinky, debased world of cretins and the bizarre
world they live in. Although black comedy reigns Private Parts nevertheless left me
feeling disgusted and horrified. The trans killer twist is one of the odd surprises of this
film so I’ll let you figure it out. See it NOW.

7. DEADLY BLESSING (1981) Set among the Hittite clan of the Amish Wes
Craven’s Deadly Blessing concerns an Incubus, or evil sprit, that seems to be
responsible for several grisly murders. Ernest Borgnine, as the patriarch of a Hittite
family, believes the Incubus is the widow of his recently deceased son, who left the
clan to marry her. The widows girlfriends, one played by a young, pre-insanity Sharon
Stone, arrive to offer their support to their bereaved friend. They end up terrorized
by The Incubus as well. What, or who, The Incubus, is a real surprise. Yes there is a
trans-killer twist involved here but you just have to experience the shocking revelation
for yourself. It’s pretty out there but that shouldn’t detract from what is a very scary,
suspenseful early shocker from Craven. He is a master at building terror filled
atmosphere and he does that quite admirably in this film. Don’t let the bad reviews
deter you.

6. HE LIVES BY NIGHT (1982) This Hong Kong film is an odd duck because not
only is it a bloody, slasher film but it’s also a pretty funny slapstick romantic comedy
on top of it. It also features one of the most brutal trans killers in any movie. The
trans-killer here is slashing any woman he/she sees wearing white stockings for a
reason that is as dumb as any in these movies. His/her weapon of choice, a box cutter.
And he/she uses it with a sickeningly brutality that may make some uncomfortable

Director Po-Chich Leong has obviously modeled the kill scenes in his film after
many Italian giallo. The first murder has the victim walking down a dark alley and
getting caught up in silk sheets that are hanging out to dry. Suddenly the trans-killer
starts slicing through the sheets with that box cutter until he/she gets to the screaming
victim, slices her to shreds then rips her white stockings off and strangles her with
them. The best sequence, though, has the killer following two dippy girls home. While
one of the girls takes a bath the other finds herself attacked by the killer. While the
bathing girl is singing in the tub she fails to hear the screams of her girlfriend who
is being sliced by that box cutter. The victim manages to get to the bathroom and
collapses inside the doorway. The killer finishes her off as her friend lies cowering
behind the shower curtain. The killer then enters the bathroom and the bathing girl
slinks under the bath water as the killer then approaches the tub and…..washes his/
her hands in the water the girl is hiding under. This sequence alone is worth it but
He Lives By Night is one of the few films that actually manages to handle it’s horror
elements and the comedic bits evenly. For every horrific, brutal murder there is some
slapstick nonsense involving the overweight detective investigating the murders and
the radio DJ that he has a crush on who will eventually end up attracting the trans-
killer. For an example don’t miss the scene towards the end where the villain tries to
kill someone with a 7Up vending machine. Seriously. It may be hard to track down
but definitely put this one on your TO FIND list.

5. SEED OF CHUCKY (2004) I am still smarting about the fact that Don Mancini’s
brilliantly over the top, perverse, black comic reinvention of his own Chucky
franchise was completely misunderstood by it’s critics and passed over by the mass
audience who would’ve loved it.

But it’s also completely understandable for a movie starring a psychopathic, split
personality, gender confused, murderous doll to get overlooked. For those of us who
got Mancini’s acerbic spoof on Hollywood, horror movies, serial killers and family
drama, Seed of Chucky was a indelible experience. Full of gross out comedy, gory
violence, and the performance of a lifetime by the great Jennifer Tilly, Seed was
a complete delight because you never really knew where it was going. So when
Chucky’s “seed” Glen suddenly turned into Glenda it was not only a shock but
fucking hilarious. Every time Glen’s eye twitched as he slowly went bat-shit crazy I
was on the floor in hysterics. But then I love twisted comedy. Seed is such a departure
from the original Child’s Play that maybe folks just did not get that Mancini was in
no way trying to scare anybody but was just trying to make fun of the genre itself. I
and my friends Will, Lance and Andrew got it Mr. Mancini. Good job. The rest of you
fuckers need to get with it.

4. TERROR TRAIN (1980) & GIRLS NITE OUT (1984) Two slasher films from the
early eighties. One is now considered a classic of the genre. The other is derided by
almost everyone. But both contain climactic trans-killer twists that are a total shock.
Terror Train’s tranny twist is just that, a twist. The fact the killer’s identity doesn’t
exactly match their disguise is simply used to throw the audience off track. There is
none of the stunning misogyny of other films on this list- like GIRLS NITE OUT.
Wow. Somebody really hates sluts. That’s the uncomfortable feeling you have after
a viewing of Girls Nite Out. Set at a small mid-western college during an all night
scavenger hunt, Girls Nite Out follows a bunch of sexually voracious cheerleaders
who are viciously slaughtered by an intensely bloodthirsty killer, who is disguised as
the dancing bear mascot that’s supposed to be cheering the scavengers on.

I’ll repeat just incase the retardedness of it didn’t sink in. The killer is disguised as a
giant bear, complete with long, sharp, metal claws. And those claws do some damage.
The murders here are incredibly nasty. The bear suited killer, snarling and growling,
ripping into his victims while screaming “slut” and “whore” at them, just sick, I tell
ya. And that’s what gives this movie it’s power. The misogyny in other Trans-killer
movies is either indirect or just under the surface. In Girls Nite Out that misogyny is a
focal point of the killers anger and the twist that caps this movie off. I believe that this
is what turns many of this movies haters off. The movie is no slower paced or more
ridiculous than any other classic slasher but the dancing bear angle doesn’t help. But
Girls Nite Out is tense and scary and silly and sick. My Kind of movie. Terror Train,
on the other hand, is simply one of the best early eighties slasher movies. We all know
the story, some frat jerks pull a stupid prank on some nerd and a year later, on board a
New Years Eve Party train the responsible party get picked off. And Jamie Lee Curtis
is along for the ride. The trans twist at this films climax remains one of the best
surprise killer reveals ever. It may not have any of the icky comparison between trans-
sexuality and psychopathy that defines other trans killer movies but Terror Train still
delivers all these years later. Its the kind of straight up old school American horror
slasher film that NOBODY KNOWS HOW TO MAKE ANYMORE, no matter what
they say on the video box, and yes I’m talking about Hatchet.

3. BLADE IN THE DARK (1983) & DELIRIUM (1987) Lamberto Bava’s twin
gialli Blade in The Dark and Delirium, one at the start of the eighties and the other
towards decades end, were essentially bookends for the giallos last act. Blade in the
Dark is, in my opinion, the best giallo from the genres latter years.

Set in an isolated cottage where a film composer is writing the score for a horror
movie, Blade is filled with the sadistically violent murders of several beautiful young
women who come calling on our composers attention. Bava does a great job of
creating an atmospherically tense and genuinely scary thriller. The final murderous
chase through the isolated villa is one of the most edge of the seat sequences in the
genre. But what really comes through in Blade is its dark thread of misogyny. The
killers hatred of the female victims is unmistakable and it makes the film that much
more disturbing. Blade is a classic. Delirium, on the other hand, is an hilariously
entertaining fart of a movie. The star of the show are the giant titties of Italian porno
actress Serena Grandi, who “acts” the part of Gloria, the obscenely rich publisher of a
glossy porno mag called PUSSYCAT. Her models are being slaughtered by a vengeful
psychopath who then mails Gloria a photo of the murdered models posed in the same
positions of her old porno pictures. It’s all a pretty sleazy, skuzzy affair. Filled with
copious nudity, ridiculous dialogue, crippled perverts making obscene phone calls and
more gaudy late eighties fashion than one set of eyeballs should ever have to endure
Delirium has always been Lamberto Bava’s most ridiculous excuses for a mortgage
payment. Of course, I love it. But unlike Blade, Delirium is never scary or suspenseful
although the killers identity and motives are whole bowl full of woman-hate. While
Blades misogynistic undertones create a unsettling atmosphere, Deliriums’ misogyny
comes off as scummy and exploitative. The finale, which has the killer ripping Gloria
clothes off and puking blood up on her couldn’t be more twisted. Mind you, I’m not
complaining. It’s just that Blade In The Dark leaves an impression whereas Delirium
is an unintentional camp delight.

2. DRESSED TO KILL (1980) Brian DePalma’s sleek, stylish, suspenseful ode to,
or rip-off of, Psycho is really the absolute epitome of the trans-killer subgenre. It
really should be number one but it’s achievements have been extolled elsewhere ad
nauseum. It’s simply one of the best thrillers of the eighties. But what really sets
Dressed to Kill apart is that it possess the absolute most, pardon the expression, killer,
He-He!, looking trans-killer of the entire genre. Six feet tall, high heeled black leather
boots, long blond wig, black leather gloves, dark shades and the slickest, sharpest
looking full length, black, natch, leather coat. This tranny is fierce. The image of
her hiding just behind poor defenseless Angie Dickinson as the elevator doors shut
continue to send chills down my spine. And like that bear in Girls Nite Out, this
tranny really hates sluts. As in Psycho, the explanatory denouement fills in the blanks
for us. Because Dressed To Kill is so well made it ceases to appear as hateful as
movies like Unhinged. But make no mistake, without it’s lush trappings Dressed To
Kill is as darkly woman hating as any of these movies.

1. SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983) Sleepaway Camp is not the best film on the list. It’s
not even the scariest. It’s certainly not the most accomplished technically. And on
list of great slasher films it’s just about a notch above MADMAN and below HELL
NIGHT. But no one, and I mean NO ONE, who saw Sleepaway Camp back in the day,
before the sequels and the internet ruined the twist ending, no one can say that they
did not jump out of their seat, either with shock or laughter at that now infamous final
image of Angela, our innocent heroine, brandishing an ax, her cheating boyfriends
decapitated had on the ground, growling like a feral animal, with her dick hanging
out. It seemed so out of left field. So retarded, in fact.

The shot itself lends much to the shock and disorientation of the moment. Felissa
Rose’s head digitally added onto the body of some unfortunately underdeveloped
young man is really shitty looking. Sleepaway Camp is also the most ridiculous
representation of an idea inherent in many of these trans killer films. That is the idea
that simply because this “girl” Angela is really a male forced to appear as a girl, that
he/she has automatic psycho killer leanings. There is no evidence anywhere in the film,
and especially in Felissa Rose’s deer-in-the headlights performance, that Angela would
even squash a bee if it landed on her arm let alone slaughter, like, ten people. The
curious viewer then has to think back, the gay parents whose death begins the movie,
the abundance of naked male flesh and the complete absence of any female nudity, the
weird, insane, possibly transsexual herself, aunt who makes that poor little hairless boy
into Angela because she “already has a boy”, the weird allusions to sexual molestation.
What was writer, director Robert Hiltzik Thinking? Hmmmm? What is the point?
Maybe there is no point except as a cheap thrill. But clearly the mind who came
up with this had something on their mind. And that my friends is essentially where
the trans-killer movie gets it’s uncomfortable power from, the ripples of misogyny
and homophobia that keep bubbling up from under the surface. They may be crude,
ridiculous and ignorant but the trans-killer and the transsexual killer movie do get under
your skin.

Dos and Don’ts for the Office Christmas Party

The office Christmas party conjures up images of drunk colleagues, uncomfortable ‘secret Santas’ and business
banter with the office bore. So is it any wonder that so many people start looking for a job in the New Year? And
why does the line ‘What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day’ sound so
familiar to you?
The annual office party can boost your career but, it can also break it. Here are some dos and don’ts of office
Christmas party etiquette aimed to keep your job, reputation and dignity in one piece.

Do attend. Your office party is not an optional

event. Even if you despise the thought of spending
a whole evening with the people you work with
every day, it’s a good idea to make an appearance.
It shows that you are part of the team.

Don’t dress inappropriately. And do dress

professionally. The venue will determine the dress
code so make sure you know what it is. “Women
are advised to stay away from slinky dresses, low-
plunging necklines, short-short skirts or tight-fitting
trousers”, according to workplace etiquette expert
Pamela Holland. And, men “should refrain from
unbuttoning more than two buttons on their shirts
and wearing overly fitted shirts that show off their
muscles”.

 Do some schmoozing. This is a good
time to talk to people you wouldn’t normally
come across and, of course, the boss. This could
help you in the long term in terms of forging
alliances, helping to get things done or just
raising your profile. But…

… Don’t talk shop. Do you want to be seen

as the office bore? The office party gives you the
chance to get to know people as people not just
‘Julie from accounts’.

Do drink in moderation. Excessive

drinking is the number one cause of office party
‘incidents’. Remember, it is a marathon not a
sprint and it is likely that you will have a long
evening ahead of you. But, by the time you
realise this you may have already consumed
enough alcohol to sink a battleship and not quite
be with it. Stick to your limit, drink slowly or
alternate between alcohol and water and, if it’s
too late for that, then switch to soft drinks and
mince pies. And resist the temptation to indulge
in tequila shots or flaming drambuie or you may
end up losing more than your inhibitions!

 Don’t make a move on a colleague.
After a few hours and a few beers even Barbara
from credit control can look like a goddess. A poll
by Tickbox.net commissioned by Quatro Wilkjnson
Sword revealed that 41% of workers admit to having
a sexual liaison with a co-worker at an office party.
But, before you make a bee-line for the person
you’ve had your eye on all year, do yourself a favour,
stay put and think, ‘Is this a good idea?’ ‘Probably
not’, is the likely answer. What’s more, in a survey
conducted by ContractorUK 13% of female workers
who have had a pass made on them by a male co-
worker end up lodging an official complaints about
their colleagues’ conduct.

Do watch your language.

Remember the reason why you are at the
Christmas party in the first place is because
you have a job. Avoid saying things you
wouldn’t say on a normal office day. A
former (note use of the word ‘former’)
colleague of mine told our CEO that his
speech was “crap” and he could do his job
blindfolded. Consequently, the Christmas
card from the boss contained his P-45. And,
for ****’s sake, don’t swear!

 Don’t leave too soon. Tequila slammers
with the girls from HR may be more appealing
than your department’s party. But, unless you
have made a holy show of yourself, stay for at
least a couple of hours even if it is the most boring
party ever. After all, it’s your boss that you need
to impress when it comes to getting a promotion.

Above all, enjoy the party. Strive to be remembered for the right reasons
and not for your lustful antics or David Brent dancing. And, in the words
of the great man himself from “The Office”, when asked how he would
like to be remembered, he replied: “Simply, as, the man who put a smile
on the face of all who he met.”

First Event 2009 to be held at Boston Marriott Peabody, January 14-
18th 2009; Call for Presenters Made.

Summary: Tiffany Club of New England’s 29th annual “First Event 2009 Transgender Conference”, to
be held January 14 to the 18th 2009 at the Boston Marriott Peabody in Peabody, Massachusetts, seeks
presenters for workshops and seminars of interest to the transgender community. Single page proposals are
needed by December 15, 2008 for inclusion.

Waltham, MA (OpenPress) October xx, 2008 -- Tiffany Club of New England’s (TCNE) 29th annual “First
Event 2009 Transgender Conference”, one of the largest Transgender conferences in the United States,
has again chosen the Boston Marriott Peabody, in Peabody Massachusetts as it’s location for it’s annual
transgender conference. The event will be held January 14 to 18, 2009.

“Tiffany Club was delighted to work in partnership with the Marriott last year in hosting First Event
2008”, said Jamie Haley, First Event 2009 Chair, “We chose to return to the Boston Marriott Peabody as
our attendees were so openly welcomed in 2008 and the Marriott did an outstanding job on all facets of our
event”.

TCNE is also seeking proposals for presentations and workshops that would address the needs and interests
of all segments of the transgender community. “The transgender community is vibrant, diverse and alive and
we welcome workshops, presentations, panel discussions, book signings and more” said June Casad, Director,
First Event 2009 Programs/Workshops.

Workshop topics have included topics on: Crossdressing, FtM concerns, MtF issues, Family/SO’s, transition
support, Medical/surgical information, standards of care, emotional support, dressing for success, make-
up, deportment, spirituality, employment and career issues, and legal rights topics. This is not meant to be
a complete or exclusive list and First Event 2009 is open to suggestions on tracks or topics that presenters
believe would be of interest to the transgender community.
Please submit a single page proposal to First Event by December 15, 2009. For the convenience of
prospective presenters, a proposal form is also available on the Tiffany Club of New England First Event
Website (http://www.tcne.org). You may submit your proposal via surface mail, fax or email.

First Event 2009 is anticipating over 600 attendees this year and will feature daytime workshops from across
the gender spectrum and of interest to the entire transgender community, spouses, partners and allies.

new style I had a walk around Southport, then decided to drive over to the Trafford
centre and had a walk around the shops not bad for my first day out.”

HOTELS- I use Travelodge and the special offers of £10 & £26 a night per room are
great value. I have never had any problems at these hotels. The only problem I have
had at an hotel was at a gay hotel in Torquay where I got a really frosty welcome to
say the least.
MAKEUP- I don’t use Dermablend because it is expensive and difficult to apply so I
use a Boots No17 cover stick or a Rimmel cover stick both are on sale at about £2.50.
