Chapter 1 Introduction to Working Principles

1.1 Overview

Elektra Series UPS are the power equipment that can provide a voltage- and frequency-stable power
system free from power network interruption. When power failure happens, UPS can supply electric power
to the load for a period. These UPS series adopt the high frequency double transformation structure with an
output separation transformer and apply all the advanced digital control technologies to achieve a stable,
clean, and uninterrupted output and complete network management functions.

Fig. 1-1
1.2 Working Principle
As shown in Fig. 1-1, UPS mainly composes a REC (rectification) module and INV (inverse transformation)
module, bypass static input switch SW2, maintenance bypass air switch SW3, output separation
transformer, inverse static switch, storage battery set, and input switch SW1, output air switch SW5 and so
on.

The circuit illustration of a single set UPS is shown in Fig. 1-2.

for a Single Set UPS

ELEKTRA SERIES 3/3 UPS                                  DEUTSCHE POWER INDUSTRY CO LTD.

The main input power supply is entered through K1 air-breaker into REC rectification unit by input inductor
and separation transformer. The rectifier will transform three-phase alternative current into a stable direct
current power, where the rectifier also serves as an electric charger. This part of circuits adopts delay “soft
start” and all-phase control technologies to increase the impulse resistant capacity of the system and
stability of direct master line voltage, decrease ripples of the storage batteries and extend their life.

When storage batteries are connected via K2 and contactor, the storage battery set can be connected to
DC master line and the storage batteries can supply DC power to inverter through direct current filter circuits
only if direct current master line voltage reaches a certain threshold value.

Inverter adopts DSP, MCU and DDC real-time processing all-digital vector control technology and, and by
digital sine wave pulse, modulates six IGBT power switch parts of DSPWM to transform the DC power
supply into three-phase AC power. The output separates load terminal and input side through △ /Y0
transformer, static switch, air-breaker K4 and other functional parts.

Bypass input power is input through air-breaker K3 and output after being controlled by bypass static switch.

UPS paralleling system applies digital signal processing (DSP) control technology and independent on-line
logic paralleling technology. Each set of UPS introduces paralleling logic signals and circulating current test
signals. Up to 8 sets of UPS can directly be paralleled in paralleling system connection. The UPS power
system can realize many working modes, such as N+X redundant paralleled connection, capacity-increased
parallel and serial hot backup, and so on. Without any auxiliary equipment added on, on-line UPS paralleling
connection can shorten power failure time, and even eliminate power cut to achieve high reliability of the
system.

1.3 Working Modes

1. Normal working modes
When primary electric supply is normal, UPS on one hand can provide a high quality and clean sine wave
AC power and on the other hand store energy into the batteries through rectifier REC unit to charge the
batteries. Illustration of the working principle is shown in Fig. 1-3:

Fig. 1-3 Normal working mode

ELEKTRA SERIES 3/3 UPS                                  DEUTSCHE POWER INDUSTRY CO LTD.

2. Working Mode of the Batteries

When electric supply is abnormal, the system will be automatically switched to batteries working
mode, where the batteries provide AC power to load by inverter. After the electric supply is recovered, the
system will ceaselessly return to normal working mode. Illustration of the working principle is shown in
Fig.1-4.

Fig. 1-4 Working mode of Batteries

3. Bypass Working Mode

UPS has two kinds of bypass working modes: one mode can automatically recover to normal working mode;
and the other can return to normal working mode only under manual control.

The system will automatically uninterruptedly switch to static bypass power to provide power supply to the
load when the inverter overload delay time is over, or when inverter is under big load impulse. When
overload is eliminated, the system will return to normal power supply mode.

When the user turns off UPS machine, any serious malfunction happens to it, or the inverter is turned off,
the system can switch to and stay at bypass working mode. If it is needed to return to normal working mode,
the user will have to restart the machine. Illustration of the working principle is shown in Fig. 1-5.

Fig. 1-5 Bypass working mode

ELEKTRA SERIES 3/3 UPS                                  DEUTSCHE POWER INDUSTRY CO LTD.

4. ECO Working Mode

If the load does not need a high quality power (if the user’s equipment allows up to 20 ms of power failure),
and does require a high efficiency of the system, the system can be set to “ECO Working Mode”. Under this
mode, when bypass power supply is normal, the system will provide power supply to the load through static
bypass, and the main line will recharge the batteries through rectifier. When bypass power fails or exceeds
the allowed range, UPS will automatically switch the load to main line or the batteries will provide power
supply to the inverter (interruption is < 1 ms). When bypass power supply returns to the normal (within the
allowed range), the system will automatically switch to bypass power supply so that the efficiency of the
system can be greatly increased. The illustration of the working principle is shown in Fig. 1-6

Fig. 1-6 ECO working mode

5. Maintenance Working Mode

The maintenance switch SW3 can be closed and the load is directly provided power supply by maintenance
bypass so that the load can be maintained without power interruption when UPS system and batteries are
completely overhauled or when equipment is maintained for any malfunctions. In the maintenance, the
internal main power input switch SW1 of the UPS, bypass input switch SW2, batteries input switch SW4,
and output switch SW5 must be cut off so that maintenance working mode is still kept to the load under the
condition that no power is carried on inside the UPS. Illustration of the principle is shown in Fig. 1-7.

ELEKTRA SERIES 3/3 UPS                                  DEUTSCHE POWER INDUSTRY CO LTD.

6. Combined Power Supply Working Mode

When the electric supply cannot be provided and diesel electric generator cannot output enough power to
meet the needs of load, storage batteries can automatically help in power supply so that diesel generator
power and storage batteries can be combined to provide power. The time of combined power supply
depends on the parameters set in battery management system. Illustration of the working principle is shown
in Fig. 1-8.

Fig. 1-8 Working mode for combined power supply

7. Paralleling Working Mode

When many sets of UPS (up to 8 sets) are working in redundant parallel or capacity-expanded parallel
working modes, each set of UPS will automatically share the load. If one set of UPS does not work due to
malfunction, the UPS will automatically exit from operation, and the other sets of UPS will share the load. If
the system is overloaded, all the UPS system will turn to bypass operation. Parallel working can be
classified into many working modes such as normal working mode, battery working mode, bypass power
supply mode, maintenance working mode, combined power supply mode, and so on.

1.4 Basic functions

Battery Management: The UPS system has an advanced battery management function, including battery
malfunction test, prediction of backup time after battery discharge, battery self-test, etc.

Delay Soft Start: The delay soft start of the UPS system can greatly reduce the impulse to the equipment
and power network during the start process of the UPS system.

Warning and Protection: The UPS system can give many forms of warnings, and the warning happening
can currently be prompted immediately, accurately and specifically through sound, light, LCD, input and
output node and network transmission.

Cold Start: The UPS system can directly be started with battery set when no AC input is made.

Automatic Restart after Electric Supply Recovered: The function of Automatic Restart after Electric
Supply Recovered is specially designed for the application in the circumstance that the UPS equipment is
connected to backup batteries. After the under-voltage protection is applied on the backup batteries, it
allows UPS power source to be automatically started when AC power is re-supplied normally. The power
supply mode is selected according to the working mode already set up.

Monitor System: The monitor system of this UPS system provides superior monitoring of the system itself,
and supports flexible network monitor, so it can fully meet the demands of various users.

Parallel Connection: The UPS system can redundantly work in a parallel connection of up to 8 sets of UPS
to meet the demands in reliability for the loads.

The recommended cable laying methods are prepared cable-laying ditch (ditch depth at 400 mm) and
“bridging” high above. The enough space must be guaranteed for maintenance and heat radiation. A free
space of 500 mm away from the back of machine should be kept and nothing should be placed in a distance
of 1000 mm away from the front of the system so that the front door and back door can be opened and
operated easily.
The UPS power supply is cooled by the internal fan and the wind enters the UPS by its bottom wind grids
and exists from the machine by the back fan. When wind cooling ventilation system is designed for the UPS
machine room, all the power consumption and ventilation wind volume should be taken into account.

2.4 Installation and Fixation

1. Transportation on site

A Crane for loading and unloading It is recommended that the package of UPS power supply rack is
removed after it is transported to the installation site. Two ropes of 10 meters long are prepared before hand
and each rope may bear a weight of 1.5 tons. The ropes will pass through the bottom of the UPS system
and be placed evenly to bear the load, as shown in the figure below:

Forklift for loading and unloading

If it is not possible to use a crane, please apply a forklift. The UPS system can be raised from front or from
four directions of the UPS. Please note the transportation distance should be controlled within several
meters.

2. Fixation Modes

Fixation modes

The UPS can be fixed on an even plane cement floor installed with cable laying channel iron. It can also be
installed on a static electricity-proof movable floor.

Weight bearing capacity of the floor

This is a key factor in UPS installation design. The weight of the UPS case is transmitted to the floor through
four ground feet screws (its diameter is 40 mm) installed on the four angles of the UPS case. So weight
bearing capacity of the floor must be appropriately considered in UPS installation.

2.5 Coming In and Out Modes for the Cables

A mode of cable coming in and out in the bottom

The mode of cable coming in and out as well as heat radiation ventilation channel should be considered
adequately.

Illustration of UPS bottom cables coming in and out

UPS power supply input and output cables are classified into main AC power input cable (3 phases and 4
lines) and bypass power input cables (3 phases and 4 lines). If the bypass power cable and main power
cable share a common power source, input cable should be connected to the cable connection terminals. If
two cables of the power source come from different power source, they should be input separately. The
bypass power input cable is connected to the bypass input terminal, and place aside the original cables
(UPS power output cables (3 phases and 4 lines), battery input cable (anode and cathode), control cable,
communication cable, cables for parallel machine connection, protection ground cable, lightning-proof cable,
battery temperature sensor cable and so on). The UPS case has a flexible mode for cables coming in and
out, whose ventilation wind inlets are placed in the front and bottom of the case, and ventilation wind outlets
are in the back (or up part) of the case.

3.3 Power Cable

2
The principle for selecting current density: Cables of 3-5 A/mm current density are selected to medium and
2
small UPS power systems, and cables of 2.5-3 A/mm current density are selected to large UPS power
supply system. The largest voltage drop arising on the electrical power cable should not be greater than 3V,
which should be considered at the same in cable selection.

There are two ways to select the current values:

Firstly calculation method: 0.8 is taken for power factor, 0.90 is for efficiency, and 176 V is for minimum
input voltage and output phase voltage is 220 V. Minimum voltage for storage battery is 32*10.8=345, and
bypass current loading capacity is 135%, inverter output capacity is 125%. When the above system
parameters are selected, the current parameters can be calculated and then cable section areas can be
selected.

Secondly refer to parameter table: From Table 1, get the working current of various UPS power supply and
from Table 9 select proper power cable.

ELEKTRA SERIES 3/3 UPS                                  DEUTSCHE POWER INDUSTRY CO LTD.

3.4 Signal Cable

Communication cables, main connection control cables, and other control cables should use shielded
multiple core cable. When a single cable is used, many single cables should be combined in a group to
increased their strength, but no more than 30 cables should be combined in one group. The section area of
2
a single cable should not be smaller than 0.5 mm .

Cable Connection Methods for Paralleling UPS When many sets of UPS are connected in parallel, the
section area and length of bypass input cable should be the same so as to reduce the working circulating
current of bypass parallel machines.

3.6 Battery Capacity

The discharge current value is calculated according to the rated load capacity. Based on the current value,
the storage current capacity is selected. There are many sizes and specifications of batteries in the market.
Our company recommends a storage battery that composes 32 independent 12V batteries connected in
series, whose single battery capacity can be 38 Ah, 65 Ah, 100 Ah, 150 Ah, and 200 Ah.

Note: When the capacity of a storage battery is over 200 Ah, we recommend parallel connections of the
storage batteries with identical capacity or composition of some 2V single batteries whose capacity is very
large. In real operations, the storage battery sets in 70%-100% of capacity range can be selected according
to the requirements of load power and backup time.

L3: Being light means that the network access is good.

3.8 Estimate of User’s Equipment Capacity

If a user’s equipment is relatively unchanged and rarely turned off, the recommended capacity of the user’s
equipment should not be greater than 60% to 70% of the UPS’s rated power. If a user’s equipment is often
changed, and frequently turned on and off, the practical maximum capacity of the equipment should not be
greater than 90% of the UPS’s rated power.
Note: If the load of a UPS is the equipment that demands on a high quality and reliable power supply, such
as a server, data storage device, etc., it is recommended that users keep the load of the equipment
unchanged and avoid frequent replacement and turning off or on of the equipment.
Note: In order to keep safe operations of a UPS and the information devices connected to the UPS, and
avoid an accident of power failure, the following devices should not be connected to the UPS as the UPS’s
load:

z Heaters, such as electrical stove, microwave oven, electrical oven and electrical heater;
z Refrigerating devices such as air-conditioner, refrigerator, etc.
z Electricity driven devices, such as electrical fan, electrical motor, washing machine, vacuum
cleaner, electrical drill, etc.

If a user insists on that the UPS is applied on the above devices, please be advised with the
manufacturer to avoid any unexpected accident.

4.2.2 External Shape and Sizes

For a battery rack, the rack and its batteries are separated during the transportation and installation and
fixation process. The empty rack is very light and will be very heavy after the batteries are installed.
Therefore, reasonable support frames and floor should be selected to bear the weight. 3-in-3-out UPS
power system has two kinds of battery racks and their installation methods are the same as the master
machine.

4.3 SNMP Cards

SNMP card supports SNMP, HTTP, TFTPD protocols, and thus UPS monitor and control functions can be
realized through monitor software, network management websites (NMS), Web browsers (IE, Netscape,
etc.). SNMP card can be upgraded on line.

4.4 Network Software

Network software serves as back-platform monitor and management software.

4.5 Class-C Lightning-Proof System

Class-C lightning-proof system serves as a protection measurement for the alternative power input into the
computer room to prevent external lightning strike or electrical sure voltage from entering the computer
room and from any damage to the equipment installed therein. This accessory system should be selected if
no Class-C or below lightning proof system is set up in the low voltage power distribution system output
terminals, the computer room is far away from low voltage power distribution output or it is the special area
liable to lightning strikes.

Class-C lightning-proof system is designed for a max 20 KA for current flow and 8/20µs for impulse current
wave form.

4.6 Battery Test Module

1. Functions
It is used to real-time measure and warn the working voltages of each battery. The test board has two
groups of connection wires. One is “battery test line” on which two rows of sockets for 40 lines to be
connected respectively corresponding to the anode and cathode of each battery. The other is
“communication line” on which DB9 has one male port and one female port that are used to connect UPS

Chapter 5 The Operations for Turning On and Off

5.1 Turning On Procedures for a Single Machine

This section is suitable to a single running UPS machine and not proper to parallel ones. When all the
connections have been done on the UPS, please follow the procedures below to start the UPS:

1 When it is decided that each phase has a voltage, close the rectification input switches to start the
UPS rectifier. If LCD panel does not light after the rectification input switch is closed, the rectifier will not be
started. This indicates that the input lines are wrong in their input line orders. Now turn off the rectification
input switch and general input power, and carefully examine the input lines. When the input lines (R, S, and
T) line phases are correctly connected, restart the total input power and rectification input switches. When
LCD panel is light, it means that the input lines are in correct orders. Wait for 20 seconds for self-testing, the
inverter will be started normally.
2 Only when UPS inverter is started normally, close the battery switch.
3 Close the bypass input switch
4 Close output switch

Warning: When the UPS works normally, the maintenance switch can never be closed; otherwise the
UPS will be damaged.

5.2 Turning Off Procedure for a Single Machine

1 First turn off all the output load switches of the UPS;
2 Turn off the bypass input switches of the UPS
3 Turn off the battery switches of the UPS
4 Turn off the rectification input switches of the UPS
5 Turn off the general input switches of the UPS

Warning: 1. Please strictly follow the above operation orders;

2. All the above procedures must be completed continuously until all the
switches are turned off.

28

ELEKTRA SERIES 3/3 UPS                                  DEUTSCHE POWER INDUSTRY CO LTD.

5.3 Turning On Procedures for a Paralleling UPS System

This section is suitable only to parallel UPS running and not proper to single machine UPS.

When all the lines are connected, please check all the lines are correctly connected and then strictly follow
the procedures below to start and operate the UPS parallel running system:
1 When input voltage is tested to be available on each phase, close the rectification input switch and
start the rectifier of the UPS power supply. If LCD board does not light up after the rectification input switch
is turned on, it means that the rectifier has not been started, i.e. the input phases is wrongly connected. At
this moment, please turn off the general input power and rectification input switch and exchange the two
phases at any order. When order of the input lines (R, S, and T) is decided, close the general switch and
rectification input switch again to observe if the LCD board works. When input phase order is connected
correctly, the inverter will be started normally after 20 seconds of self-testing.
2 Close the battery switch after the inverter is started normally.
3 Follow the above steps 1 and 2 to start and operate another UPS or other UPS that are needed to
be connected for parallel operation.
4 When it is confirmed that each UPS has been started normally, test the output voltage of each set
UPS. If the output voltage is normal, close all the bypass input switches.
5 The output voltages (R, S and T) of three phases are measured again with a multimeter, and
confirm that output voltage of each set UPS is normal.
6 The output voltage difference between each phase and another is measured with a multimeter and
all the output phase voltage difference (UR-R, US-S, and UT-T) between all the UPS that are connected in
parallel should not be over 10 V. If the voltage difference is less than 10 V, it indicates that each set of UPS
is synchronic with another UPS. Now each set of UPS can be operated in parallel; otherwise its operation is
prohibited and the reasons for being synchronic should be investigated.
7 Close the output switch. After several minutes, close the general load switch.

Warnings: 1. When each UPS is not synchronic, the UPS in parallel operation is strictly prohibited.
1 When a UPS works normally, it is prohibited to close the maintenance switch; otherwise the
UPS can be damaged.
2 When a UPS is in the status of operations in parallel, it is strictly prohibited that input
rectification switch, battery switch, bypass switch, and output load switch cannot be turned off on
one set or many sets of he UPS.

5.4 Turning Off Procedures for a Paralleling UPS System

1 First of all, turn off output load switch of each UPS running in parallel.
2 Turn off bypass input switch of each UPS running in parallel.
3 Turn off battery switch of each UPS running in parallel.
4 Turn off rectification input switch of each UPS running in parallel.
5 Turn off the general power switch.

Warnings: 1. The above order of the operation steps must be strictly followed.
2. Each of the above steps must be completed continuously until all the switches are
turned off.

29

ELEKTRA SERIES 3/3 UPS                                  DEUTSCHE POWER INDUSTRY CO LTD.

5.5 Turn Off Procedure in Emergency for a Paralleling UPS System

When an unexpected malfunction happens, follow the steps below to turn off the UPS running in parallel:
1 Turn off the general load switch.
2 Turn off output load switch of each UPS running in parallel.
3 Turn off bypass switch of each UPS running in parallel.
4 Turn off the general input power switch of each UPS running in parallel.
5 Turn off the battery switch of each UPS running in parallel.

Warning: the order of operation procedures above must strictly be followed.

5.6 Operations for a Working UPS to Be Connected to Another UPS on Line

Note: This section is suitable only to the UPS running in parallel.

1 Test the rectification switch, battery switch, bypass switch, output switch of each set of UPS already
in operation and guarantee that they are all closed.
2 Close the rectification input switch to make the rectifier of the UPS to work normally.
3 Close battery switch
4 Close bypass switch
5 Wait for about 5 minutes and measure the R-R phase, S-S phase and T-T phase voltage differences
between the output voltage of the UPS and electric supply voltage and the voltage difference should be less
than 30 V (mean square root).
6 First of all, one terminal of the parallel interconnected line of the UPS is to be connected to the
parallel interconnected socket on the UPS case that is just started. The other terminal of the parallel
interconnected line is firmly connected to the parallel interconnected socket on the UPS rack that has been
already in running status. In connecting process, it should be done smoothly and should be done
successfully in one trial to avoid any repeated twisting.
7 When it is confirmed that the inter-UPS line is firmly connected to two sets of UPS, measure the R-R
phase, S-S phase, and T-T phase output voltage differences between two sets of UPS. If one set of UPS is
running with load, the voltage difference should be less than 20V; if each set of UPS is running without load,
the voltage difference should be less than 5V.
8 Close the output load switch of the UPS newly started.

Remark: If one new UPS is to be connected into a group of UPS that have already been running in parallel,
the procedures to start the new UPS are the same as the above.

Warnings: 1. The order of the above operation steps must strictly be followed.
2. It is strictly prohibited to run the UPS in parallel under the condition that the inter-UPS
connection line and inter-UPS terminal have not be firmly connected.

30

5.7 Operations for Turning Off a Malfunction UPS in the Combined Machine Working Status

Note: This section is suitable only to the UPS running in parallel.

1 It is confirmed that all the bypass switches of each UPS are in the close status.
2 Turn off the output load switch of the malfunction UPS.
3 Plug out the inter-UPS connection line of the malfunction UPS from the socket.
4 Turn off the bypass switch, rectification switch, and battery switch of the malfunction UPS.

Warnings:

1 The order of the above operation steps must be strictly followed.

2 It is strictly prohibited to turn off the inter-UPS connection line when the parallel UPS is in
normal working status.
3 It is strictly prohibited to connect the UPS power for interconnection under the condition that
the inter-UPS connection line of the UPS to be run in parallel has not completely firmly been
connected.
4 When electric supply input is available or when the battery is running under discharging
condition, it is strictly prohibited that the battery switch of the UPS is to be turned off, if one set of
UPS, which is interconnected for running, sends out a under-voltage warning due to too low
discharging voltage of the battery.

6.7 How to Carry Out System Management Operations

A. Click on System Management icon to display the graph below:

1) Operation record, warning record, and communication record are the important classification to the
important events of the system so as to facilitate managers to analyze the malfunctions.
2) The overall equipment temperature will indicate the temperature values of environment (temperature
inside the case), rectifier, inverter, transformer, battery, and other working parts to facilitate staff to
observe the equipment working status.
3) Go to bypass, and Go to Inverter are the only one manual operation form. In order to guarantee safety,
password is needed, while the password at delivery is 1234.
4) Uniform battery charging and battery floating charging are set to decide the battery charging form, and
uniform charging time can be set to 1 to 4 hours and it will automatically turn to floating charging status.
ECO working mode switch status will change the normal working style of the equipment: bypass is
normal (when ECO=ON); and inverse transformation is normal (when ECO=OFF). When ECO=OFF, in
order to be safe, a password is needed for modification, and the password at delivery is 5678.
5) Recovery and modification are set for system managers to adjust the internal protection points, warning
points, and other internal parameters. “x” means no permit and “v” means permit. After both are disabled
at a time, if it is allowed to reset one of them, it needs a password for the operation. The password at
delivery is 5678 and usually both are commonly be “x”.
6) Delete: “v” indicates permit to press the delete key to delete historical records, while “x” means no
permit. Usually it is “x”. 7) Buzzer: “v” means sound alarm is allowed. It will give out prompt sound when
the key is pressed. “x” means no permit for sound alarm (except emergency alarm of battery discharging
protection). Unlike the noise suppressor, it will perpetually turn off the sound alarm, while noise suppressing
key will only eliminate the sound of the current alarm, and when the alarm is disabled at this time, the noise
suppressor still need be pressed for next alarm. It is commonly set to “x”.
