+ABAWDONA (THE REPENTANT ONE): A
fallen Seraph. He was once a magnificent
angel in Heaven, until he sinned against
God. He later repented of his
transgressions.
+ABAGTHA: One of the angels of
confusion.
+ABALIM (GREAT ANGELS): The Hebrew
name for the order of angels called
Thrones.
+MAN: An angel in Persian mythology who
governs the month of the same name. In
Persia the month of Aban runs between
the middle of October through the middle
of November, with the dates falling around
October 23—November 21.
+ABATHLTR MUZA4J.JIA: See Abyatur.
+ABBKroN (DEATH): An angel of death,
and a guardian of the under world.
+.AirnAas: An elite class of angels found in
Islam. They preside over the operation of
the universe. Selected personally by God,
the identities of the seventy Abdals are
kept secret from the other angels. When
one dies, God selects another angel to
replace him.
+ABDIEL (GOD’S SERVANT): A high-
ranking angel in Heaven, and a faithful
servant of God. His name can be found in
the Book of R.aziel, and in John Milton’s
epic poem Paradise Lost. In Paradise Lost,
he is portrayed as a powerfiul Seraph who
battles with and overthrows the rebeffious
angels who turned against God to serve
Satan. A variation of Abdiel is Adabiel.
+ABDIzuEL: An angel who oversees one of
the twenty-eight lunar man sions, as
mentioned in the Cabala.
+ABEDNEGO: One of three Hebrew men in
the Book of Daniel (3:1—30) who were
rescued from a fiery furnace by an angel.
+ABEIO: An alias used by the she-demon
Lilith when working evil schemes against
mortals.
+ABEL: An angel who judges the souls of
mortal men once they reach Heaven. He
determines if they will enter Paradise or
be thrown into Hell.
+ABEZETHIEOU: An angel who rules
Tartarus (the underworld).
+MEZI: A fallen angel. According to
legend, Abezi was once a mighty and
glorious angel. He fell from grace when he
developed a strong hatred for the
Hebrews. He fought against Moses in
Egypt and aided Pharaoh in his attempts
to keep the Hebrews in bondage. He
worked with Pharaoh’s magicians Jannes
and Jambres in order to accomplish this.
However, his methods were thwarted
when God had him drowned
in the Red Sea. From that day forward he
has been considered a demon of the Red
Sea.
+ABEZI-THIB0D: A variation of the name
Abezi.
+M1-IEIEL: An angel who oversees one of
the twenw-eight lunar man sions, as
mentioned in the Cabala.
+.ABITO: An alias used by the she-demon
Lilith when working evil against the
daughters of Eve.
+ABOEZRA: An angel of God who is called
upon in the consecration of salt.
+AB01tTI0N(S), ANGEL OF: Kasadya, an
angel from the Grigori class. Kasadya
taught women of earth how to perform
abortions.
+AERAcADABRA (I BLESS THE DEAD): An
ancient magical word. It is believed by
some to be of Balkan origin. It is also
thought to be derived from the name
Abraxis (an angel of gnosticism). Others
contend that it v.’as derived from the
Hebrew term ha brachah dabarah, which
means “speak the blessing.” During
ancient times it was used for protection
and could be found inscribed on amulets
and talismans, to guard against ail ments
and attacks from demons. In spells it was
used for summoning angels for protection
against evil spirits.
+.ABRAHAM: Israel’s first great patriarch,
and the founder of Judaism. In the Book of
Genesis 18:1—2, Abraham was visited by
three angels as he sat at the entrance of
his tent. The account states, “The Lord
appeared to Abraham by the oaks of
Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his
tent in the heat of the day. He looked up
and saw three men standing near him.”
The angels had come to tell Abraham that
his wife, Sarah (who was elderly and
barren), would give birth to a son. The
angels also informed him of the impending
destruction of two nearby cities, Sodom
and Gomorrah. In a later account, God
tests the faith of Abraham by instructing
him to offer his beloved son, Isaac, as a
sacrifice. However, an angel of the Lord
prevents Abraham from carrying out this
act (Genesis 22:12). According to Judaic
lore, when it was time for Abraham to die,
God sent the archangel Michael to tell him
that he should prepare for death. The soul
of Abraham was escorted to Heaven by
angels. See Sacrifice.

+ABRAVENEL, DON IsA A renowned Jewish
scholar, and deep reli gious thinker.
Abravcnel lived during the period when
the Jews were driven out of Spain. He
drew on his faith in God and his belief in
angels to see him through the terrible
ordeal. Years later in an exposition, he
wrote that the angels of Jacob’s ladder
were with the Jews during their suffering,
and that the Jews would ascend to Heaven
with their guardian
