STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

My schooling and three and a half years of

undergraduate studies in EE at the Indian Institute
of Technology, Bombay have made the choice of
further study, for me, an obvious one. This should
be attributed in part to the values that have been
inculcated in me during my formative years in an
educated middle class family background.

Beginning with a passing interest in EE, these

years of in depth study have convinced me that my
future lies in microelectronics. The challenges
and possibilities for research in device, analog
and digital circuit, and VLSI circuit design
fascinate me. This I believe has come about
through a sequentially structured introduction to
this field through the courses:

Modern Physics,
Electronic Devices,
Analog Circuits,
Digital Circuits,
Integrated Circuit Design and Technology.

In addition, I have worked on a number of related

projects. I have worked on MOS capacitor
characterization under Prof. Rakesh Lal using a
quasi static approach. My B.Tech seminar (home
paper) dealt with Monte Carlo simulations of small
Si MOSFETs. My guide was Prof. J. Vasi of the EE
Dept. of IIT Bombay. I have undergone eight weeks
of practical training in a Dept. of Electronics lab
where I studied the theoretical and practical
aspects of active and passive coupling of edge
emitting semiconductor lasers to optical fibers.
An LD-SM optical fiber module was made and
experiments were carried out. In my senior year I
presented a seminar on Noise in Semiconductor
Devices under the Microelectronics Seminar Series
at IIT Bombay. My senior year B.Tech project
(senior thesis) involves design of ultra low noise
analog circuits. The final goal of the project is
to design, with intent to fabricate, an ultra low
noise integrated circuit operational amplifier. My
B.Tech project work is progressing under the
guidance of Prof. D. K. Sharma of the EE Dept. of
IIT Bombay. I can quite confidently say that my
abilities in circuit visualization, analysis, and
design are unparalleled in my department. In the
process of pursuing my interests in EE, my academic
performance has been outstanding. I have been
consistently ranked 2nd in EE out of 64 students,
and 8th in IIT Bombay out of 325 students. I was
included in the director's academic honor list for
the academic years
1991-1992
1992-1993

My academic pursuits have not however, prevented

from participating with interest in various
extracurricular activities. I have taken part in
various literary activities. I am a regular
participant in elocution competitions and debating
society meetings and have been the editor of the
hostel magazine. These activities have led to the
development of a multifaceted personality and have
equipped me with strong interpersonal skills. This
helps me to lead, as well as follow the leader when
working as a team.

From where I stand now, I see myself engaged, in

the long term, in a career devoted to active
research in microelectronics. It is with this
objective in mind that I want to pursue an M.S. at
Stanford University. My ultimate degree objective
would however be a Ph.D. In choosing Stanford
University as the University of my Choice, I've
looked carefully at the faculty and the available
infrastructure.

The essence of university education lies in the

success of the symbiotic relationship between the
student, and his department. With your repute in
the field of my choice, you do have a lot to offer
me, and at the same time, I am confident of
contributing meaningfully to the research endeavors
at your University. It is with this in mind that I
am looking forward to a long and rewarding
relationship with you.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

After carefully considering my aptitude, interests,

the nature of my training and my ultimate
professional ambition, I have decided to pursue Ph.
D. in electrical engineering specializing in the
fields of my interest namely- Communications,
Signal Processing and Information Theory and
Coding, ultimately leading to a career in teaching
and research. As a statement of purpose of my
graduate study, I describe here my academic
background, my research interests and my career
goals.

The undergraduate programme at Indian Institute of

Technology, Bombay is a well rounded programme. It
not only helped me build a solid foundation of
Electrical Engineering fundamentals, but also
helped me develop an overall perspective of the
vast field of Electrical Engineering. In the final
year I developed a keen interest in the areas of
Communications and Signal Processing. I
substantiated my knowledge of these areas by
choosing electives on Digital Communications,
Communication System Theory (Random Processes in
Communications), Digital Signal Processing and
Information Theory and Coding.

In the Master of Technology Programme, I

specialized in Communications. Taking advantage of
a fully flexible course structure, I have chosen
electives on Statistical Signal Analysis, Applied
Linear Algebra in Electrical Engineering, Theory of
Error Correcting Codes, Image Processing and
Adaptive Signal Processing. Apart from these, I
have taken courses on two special topics in
Electrical Engineering namely- Computational Vision
and
Artificial Neural Networks.
I have striven to perform well in the courses and
have tried to gain as much as I could from them.
But I feel that the real qualification of a good
graduate student is his ability to perform
independent research work under the guidance of
an advisor. My B.Tech. (Final year) project under
Prof. P. G. Poonacha gave me such an opportunity.
In my B. Tech. Project I studied convergence
issues in Non-Symmetrical and Higher order Neural
Networks. First part of the project has been
submitted to IEEE Trans. Neural Networks as a brief
paper. It has been accepted after review.

In my M.Tech Programme, I did a mini project on

determination of rotation parameters of a lamina
from its binary images using moment- invariants of
the images. I did an intensive seminar (a survey
of literature) on Simulated Annealing Algorithm for
Optimization.

My M.Tech. Thesis deals with Information across

Boolean Functions. It involves establishing
relationship between complexity measures of Boolean
Functions and an attempt to study the nature of
optimal circuit through restrictions of a Boolean
function.

The project work and the course work have further

interested me in Communication and Signal
Processing and have motivated me to learn more of
these areas. Also, the ideas involved in finding
fundamental limits on capabilities of information
extraction and transmission and the attempts at
achieving the limits - which form the core of
information theory – have interested me very much.
I realize that techniques and the tools used there
overlap. Therefore I have taken liberty to quote
these broad areas as
Research interests. Specifically the areas of my
interest are Source Coding/ Data Compression,
Information Theory and Coding, Statistical Signal
Processing, Digital Communication, Multi-user
Communication, optimal filtering and detection and
estimation.
I am also interested in the application of Neural
Networks to these areas.

The Department of Electrical and Computer

Engineering at UCSB is a well known center of
excellence. The department faculty consists of
leading researchers engaged in frontline research.
The research interests of the faculty are extremely
compatible with those of mine, a fact underlined by
the fact that some of the faculty members are
pioneering people in their fields. In particular, I
would like to work with the faculty involved with
the Center for Information Processing and Research.
I shall be glad to be a part of the group and
witness and contribute my bit to the leading
research being carried out at UCSB.

An opportunity to work in the stimulating

environment at UCSB will certainly make the
graduate study a rewarding exercise and a
satisfying experience. In terms of research
facilities also, a university like UCSB has more to
offer to a graduate student.
I, therefore, look forward to joining UCSB as a
graduate student.

As professional goal, I would like to take up a

career in research and teaching. From the
residential system of IIT Bombay, I have been able
to have a glimpse of the academic life and the
sacrifices it involves. I feel that it is this kind
of life that I am best suited for. I feel that I
have enough motivation to see me through the
challenges of the arduous but exhilarating career
in research.
I thank Prof. Gersho and Prof. Rose for their
advice and valuable information.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Inspired by the role engineers play in everyday life I enrolled as an undergraduate

student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I expect to complete the same by April
2007. Heading towards the successful completion of my degree,I feel that a Masters
degree with thesis would equip me with intellectual depth and breadth along with greater
practical knowledge to face the professional and leadership challenges I will face in my
career.

My parents are my mentors. My father with a triple post graduate degrees and my
mother with one have been instrumental in shaping my career from a very early stage of
my life. They have painted my imagination with the wonders of science. They cultivated
the idea that knowledge enhances on sharing with people around us. I enjoy sharing my
knowledge and helping students of different grades in subjects of maths and physical
sciences till day. My strong and consistent academic record till day is a consequence of
the strong foundation laid by the wealth of knowledge from books of celebrated author's
like Robert Resnick & David Halliday during my high school, Brian W. Kerinnighan &
Dennis M. Ritchie, Van Valkenburg, Stevenson Jr., W.H Hayt , J.E Kimmerley etc
during my undergraduation.

Flexibility, automation, controlled flow and parameter optimization are few

demands of the current day tech savvy world. VLSI designing coupled with Embedded
systems provide an efficient and economic solution to these demands. My career goal
would be to develop exceptional competence in this field and acquire skills for
pioneering new developments. The field of my interest includes hardware designing,
programming & development of tools ,testing and verification for faultless systems;
therefore I would like to work on developing methodologies to improve design
quality, optimization of hardware and software components, tools for evaluation.

My endeavor is to be the best in my field of specialization. Towards achieving the

same goal,I took up various courses and internships on the non academic front to
improve my skill levels and enhance my knowledge. While applying my skills in
programming languages of C,C++, I am currently learning the hardware description
languages Verilog and VHDL. These languages coupled with the comprehensive VLSI
course I selected as my first elective in my 5th semester would help me discern the course
better. I further completed an internship in embedded system design during the summer
of 2006. During the same I gained insights into programming AVR microcontrollers
using Embedded C and supported by latest version of testing tools,C programming
style,PCB designing etc. During the training,I developed a project using AVR
microcontrollers to remotely detect hazardous fuel leakages. The same was sent to Circuit
cellar design contest, USA for possible evaluation and feedback. I am currently working
on my final year project that uses ARM processors to develop an infrared measurement
system.
On careful study of your University prospectus and website I have found that the
graduate program suits my needs perfectly and the ongoing research concurs with my
interest. The research in areas of Mixed signal processing and Embedded systems is of
interest to me. In particular the research interests of Professor Chaitali Chakrabarti and
Associate professor Lawrence T. Clark, related to low power VLSI architectures and Cad
for VLSI match mine. Coupled with this, the on going research under the theme
consortium of Embedded systems will help me soar new heights and subsequently
achieve success in my field of interest. Further the The strong networking of the ECE
department at Arizona sate university with the industry would give me ample
opportunities to interact with renowned professionals during my course work. At the
university I plan to do my major in VLSI design and a minor in embedded systems, I will
also study few courses in communications and signal processing as I foresee a need for
working knowledge in the same as experienced during the project works undertaken by
me.

Its in my pursuit of providing the most ideal technological solutions that I am

seeking my Masters degree. I strongly believe that under guidance of your highly
competent faculty, I will mould my career decisively for the better. With my personal
commitment to make an indelible mark in my dream career, strong and consistent
academic record that currently rates me at the top 2 % in a class of 67 students, I will be
able to contribute to the research work at your university and live upto the expectations
of your high academic standards.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Masters in Electrical Engineering

My goal in academics is to pursue knowledge to be part of a pioneering research field and

contribute significantly to the development of human society. This desire coupled with a
Strong urge to delve deep and explore the rapidly expanding world of technology is the
driving force behind my academic pursuits. This has motivated me to pursue higher
studies in MS (Electrical Engineering) which calls for a higher level of knowledge and
expertise.

The decision to pursue graduate studies in Electrical Engineering is indeed one of the
most significant decisions of my academic career .A graduate study is essential to
strengthen the foundation of fundamental concepts that have been laid during my present
course of study and provided me with adequate foothold and exposure .I sincerely believe
that graduate education can help mold a creative, mature and inquisitive frame of mind.

I would like to present an overview of my performance at secondary and higher

secondary which would reflect my character and future performance at your university. I
got selected for the free education in my 5th grade under Jawahar Navodaya Exam system
conducted at national level, which is a measure of my diligence at such a young age.
Apart from maintaining the topper position consistently at school level, I engaged myself
in many co-curricular activities like essay writing competitions, elocution, science talent
search exams and sports and won many prizes. My affinity towards mathematics
enhanced my flair manifold and my was that I passed out my 10th grade perseverance and
acumen strengthened. This prompted me to choose the subjects of mathematics, physics
and chemistry at my higher secondary (intermediate) level for which I did the
justification by obtaining 60.0%. I qualified for the undergraduate studies with ECE as
my specialization at Holy Mary Institute of Technology, affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru
Technological University, Hyderabad, one of the premier institutes in India.

The exhaustive nature of undergraduate studies at TEC helped me develop a sound

foundation in all the major areas of Electronics and Communication Engineering. My
undergraduate curriculum includes Electronic Devices & circuits, Network Theory,
Switching Theory and Logic Design, Analog and Digital communication, EM Waves and
Transmission Lines, Microprocessors, Digital Signal Processing, VLSI, Optical
Communication. Computer related topics like Computer Organization, Operating System
and Computer Networks. My electives include Satellite communication and Digital
Image processing. On the other hand, the intensive laboratory classes exposed me to a
fascinating world of experimentation. It was here that I discovered the qualities of
perseverance and diligence in myself. I feel that these courses have done a lot to prepare
me for my future studies and research work.

My final year Project is in Client Interfacing Memory Block DDR-SDRAM using

VHDL, it is interfacing between two clients and transferring the double data in one clock
pulse.
I even attended many technical symposiums in and out of the campus, industrial visits,
etc which widened the horizons of my knowledge. I have given seminars spanning
several topics and won appreciation for my communication skills. I am also acquainted
with computer languages like C, C++ and JAVA.

Since the nature of undergraduate course does not offer enough scope for individual
expression and even the rapidly advancing technology calls for mastering a particular
area, I require specialized training to help me gain a competitive edge in this world,
where new technology evolves every day. Hence I believe graduate study with an
objective of obtaining an MS degree in Electrical Engineering would give me an ideal
opportunity to probe and unravel the intricacies of my interested field and achieve my
goals with greater amount of freedom. I firmly believe that my visions can take a more
concrete shape only through an intensive graduate program. To give life to these dreams I
need to be in a school, which has good research facilities, an inspiring environment, good
faculty and motivated research groups. I find your university to be motivating and
provided me with the necessary impetus to pursue my graduate studies. The website of
your department made me believe that graduate studies at your esteemed university will
provide me an ambience of excellence and intellectual atmosphere apart from an
integrated engineering.

In this regard I strongly desire to be considered for admission with appropriate financial
aid and facilitate my higher studies at your esteemed university. I thank you for giving
me an opportunity to express myself.

Statement of Purpose

At this juncture, where I have made one of the most crucial and obvious decision of my
professional career, I would like to list the factors that influenced me most and went into
the making of this decision.

Electronics Engineering has made an indelible mark on my psyche right from my school
days. School made me realize my potential and what I was capable of. There was an
opportunity for almost any and everything. By the time I reached senior school, I
participated in elocutions, plays and was member of various school sport teams. I was
very grateful to my mentors who emphasized more on practical knowledge. During my
high school days, I was captured by electromagnetism which seemed very interesting.
Electromagnetism at work in few toy projects like electric bell, railway signals enthralled
me. Since then I have indulged myself in making the models of such projects. This
childhood interest has had a significant impact on me for it has deeply rooted in me the
sense of inquiry and curiosity and practical work.

My undergraduate program has given me a strong background in the fundamentals of

various Electronics subjects life Digital Electronics, Integrated Electronics,
Microprocessors, Microwave Engineering, etc and Communication Engineering topics
like Signals and systems, Analog Communication, Digital Communication, etc. As an
undergraduate student I have found keen interest in the subjects of Microprocessors and
microcontrollers in particular, which has stimulated me to take up further specialized
studies in this field.

In my seventh semester I have done a project in embedded systems domain at NSIC

(National Small Industries Corporation) a government of India enterprise. My project was
“Electrical Equipment Control through a PC”. This project focused on interfacing a
PC with the electric appliances using suitable hardware and then developing a software
program to control these appliances. I was the leader of the team of four. This project has
brought the most out of me. My responsibilities as the team leader included designing the
hardware part of power supply section and interfacing circuit and actually building it on a
PCB. I also had the responsibility of coordinating the work of all the team members
effectively. By dint of perseverance and patience we have successfully designed a system
that enabled the control of electrical equipment through a PC.

I have an avid interest in presenting technical papers which led me to presenting papers at
national level competitions like PRAGNA-05 and Srujana-05. My paper at PRAGNA
organized by Jayaprakash Narayan College of Engineering was on the topic of
“Electromagnetic Weapons”. This paper dealt with the designing and detonation of
electromagnetic weapons. Another paper I presented was on RFID at Srujana-05
organized by ABVP at Osmania University. This paper effectively depicted the
advantages of this upcoming technology and received applauds. I have also presented
seminars at the college level on topics like functioning of PIN diode and avalanche diode
in the first semester, handshaking in microprocessor and tracking in radars and received
applauds.
I was equally involved in organizing seminars and providing the junior students with
valuable assistance in their laboratory activities.

My interest beyond the curriculum included a variety of fields from sports to theatre to
adventure and social activities. One of my favorite fields was theatre where in I regularly
participated in all dramas and educational programs for youngsters and illiterates.

I am an avid lover of nature and also have penchant for adventures. This also lead me to
many adventure camps wherein I had the opportunity to mix with students of different
regions and had a chance of exchanging our ideas bringing about a blend of new ideas
and helping us develop new dimensions of thought. I am hardworking, scrupulous and
sincere by nature with a strong desire for learning. I derive satisfaction from dedicated
work and firmly believe that dedication, deference and diligence are surest means of
reaping the benefits

I feel that undergraduate study alone does not provide the specialized academic exposure
essential to reach higher professional levels in the present day technology driven
workplace. Moreover, it is only during Graduate studies that I will be able to get adequate
opportunities to test the validity and the practicality of my ideas. Graduate study in the
United States of America is known for its spirit of innovation, which sets global
standards of excellence.

As soon as I completed my undergraduate studies, it did take me long to decide where I

wanted to pursue my masters’ degree. After an exhaustive research I have found
University of Nebraska at Lincoln and knew it was the right place for me.

I have gone through the university’s website to know about the research activities being
done there. I am indeed fascinated by the spectrum of activities at Nebraska center for
materials and Nanoscience (NCMN) and the VLSI testing facilities available at UNL.

I have also gone through the profiles of eminent professors like Mr. Mustafa Cenk
Gursoy and Mr.Hamid Vakilzadian who are very experienced and whose areas of interest
include my favorite subjects. I wish to be guided by eminent personalities like them in
pursuing my masters’ degree.

To achieve my cherished objective of obtaining a position of leadership in my field of

study/work, I feel that Graduate Study at University of Nebraska at Lincoln with its high
quality of intellectual and material resources would give me the right opportunity and
environment to realize my academic and professional goals.

I conclude with great expectations of being given a chance to pursue higher studies at
UNL. Providing me with adequate financial aid would greatly facilitate my pursuing of
masters’ degree.

I thank you for giving me this opportunity to express myself

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Name :
Qualification : B-Tech (Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering)
Course Aspiration : M.S. In Electrical Engineering

“People often become what they believe themselves to be .If I believe I cannot do
something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the
ability to do it even if I didn’t have it in the beginning”. Thus spoke Mahatma Gandhi,
The Father of our Nation. One might wonder what even made me to quote this. Well, this
is one of the quotes that has been ringing in my ears from the time I heard it from my
Father and has been a great deal of inspiration ever since. I always believed that I would
become an efficient electronic engineer and make it big in the field of communications.
‘Belief’ and ‘Faith’ are the two little words that drive me.

My approach towards my academic career has been to set a goal and work hard to
reach that goal. My main aim is to pursue M.S. in Electrical engineering at your
university, so that I can channelise my mental resources and unbridle my efforts into
more productive avenues. From my child hood I was habituated to competitive exams.
When I was in the fifth class I attempted many entrance exams like Ramanujam talent
search exam, All-India general knowledge test, National talent search exam conducted by
various public associations under Government of India. Consequently, I opted for
Mathematics, Physics and chemistry as my majors at the plus two level. At this stage I
started focusing on the application part and acquired a solid foundation for my under-
graduate study.
For the under-graduate course (B.Tech) I joined the Institution of
Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) an educational institution
under the HRD Ministry, Indian Government. The syllabi and structure of the course
in electronics was very comprehensive and provided ample opportunities for learning,
theoretically and application wise and conducts a high standard of examination. Many
eminent personalities from reputed organizations like ECIL (Electronics Corporation of
India Limited),DRDO ( Defence Research and Development Organisation), BHEL
(Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited), BDL ( Bharat Dynamics Limited ) and BSNL (
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ) took active part of institution’s working committee and
thus contributed tremendously to the Quality of education we received in this institution.

During my under-graduation I was involved in various other activities ranging

from presentation of technical papers to participate in Techno Events. I presented several
technical papers like, “Mobile location Tracking Techniques using GPS” at the
institution of electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Hyderabad, “Seismic data
processing Technique” at Chaitanya Bharati Institute of Technology, Hyderabad and
“WiMAX-The next generation wireless technology” at Osmania University,
Hyderabad, of which the one that gained great appreciation was “Mobile location
Tracking Techniques using GPS”. Further I have participated in a quiz competition
conducted by Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) on Information and communication
development, and I secured the First position in the MS-office course conducted by
Bhavan’s Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology. To
enhance my communication skills, I attended the proficiency course in English organized
by CENTRAL INSTITUTE OF ENGLISH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES
(CIEFL).

The under graduate curriculum introduced me a wide gamut of subjects, which

taught me a lot about almost everything I wanted to know. Various subjects like Basic
Electronics, circuit theory & designing, Analog & Digital Electronics, Signals &
Systems, Control Engineering, and Computer Engineering , Telecommunication systems
etc. reinforced my liking for the field and also spurred me seek research opportunities in
the same. It was these subjects that really taught me what electronics was and all about
the intricacies involved. We all use Highly configured computers,

My training at IETE has not only equipped me with a strong technical base but
also in me a deep interest in research. I strongly feel the need to pursue my Masters in
electrical engineering in an esteemed university in accordance with my career goals. I am
keen to study in an AMERICAN UNIVERSITY where there is much scope for
improvement of personal as well as technical skills, through practicals and research. After
considerable analysis I chose your institute as it has excellent faculty and infrastructure
for research work. I am fully aware that your curriculum requires that I summon all my
resources and aver that I have the necessary intelligence, devotion, perseverance and
sincerity to look forward to it at all.

Finally I would be grateful to you if I am accorded the opportunity to pursue my

graduate studies at your university and look forward to a favorable response.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

“A dream acted upon by confidence becomes an ambition and that when followed with
determination defines the purpose of existence in its entirety”
It is with a sincere sense of gratitude towards the opportunity given to me, I pen down this statement.
Education not only expands the horizons of one's knowledge but also simultaneously implants an
insatiable desire to acquire more and more knowledge. Knowledge is that which can enhance the strength
of mind and thereby expand the intellect of man. It is that which can transcend the limits of the time and
take mankind beyond those limits to the timeless eternity. The knowledge, which science and technology
had provided for the mankind has always fascinated me and had left an indelible impression on my mind
to envisage my goals and aims ahead.

Goals and aspirations

To pursue higher education in electrical and electronics by doing my masters in an esteemed university,
and thereby make a mark in the field of electrical and electronics.
My aspiration is to acquire the wisdom from the knowledge and thereby give it back to the scientific
community in specific and mankind in general in the long run.

Inspirational factors
The most prominent inspirational factor is the discourse from my tutor when I was in my ninth standard
of my schooling, which had certainly created the curiosity within me to know more about the science,
and made me an active participant of science fairs and exhibitions. The inspiring words of my tutor have
certainly instigated the interest in the physical sciences. And shown me the light towards accomplishment
of my desire.
My friend, who is an NIT graduate, has been my motivational drive to take electrical engineering as my
profession at my under graduation. The projects that has been handled by him during his tenure has
enthralled me and provoked me to be more apprehensive of the facts and figures involved in the field of
Electricals.

Academic Background
With a sound school background I have successfully completed my 10 years of schooling and secured
79% in my X standard. My innate strengths have been my quantitative and analytical abilities, which
instilled in me a special interest in mathematics and made me to take up mathematics, physics and
chemistry as my majors in my pre-university education wherein I stood among top 5% in our state. I was
in the top 8% of people who succeeded the Common Engineering Entrance Examination conducted state
wide. I took up Electrical Engineering as my discipline in Holy Mary Institute of Technology affiliated to
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, one of the premier institutes in India. I passed this Under
Graduation course with an aggregate of 61%.

Under graduation course work

The four years of undergraduate education have been a great learning and enriching process for me. I
have thorough knowledge of fundamentals of Electrical Engineering especially in the fields of Electro
Mechanics, Electro magnetic Fields, Electronic Devices and Circuits, Pulse and Digital Circuits, Power
Electronics, Electrical Measurements, Power Systems and Semiconductor Drives, Control Systems. I am
fully acquainted with the fast growing subjects like Network Theory, Digital Signal Processing,
