Often mistaken as the pharmaceutical industry, the healthcare in India is fairly nascent.
Healthcare, as we define, essentially comprises the medical consumables / disposables
and bio scientific products.
The industry established itself in the early 90’s with most multinationals having a liaison
presence in India and importing and selling products through various distributor
arrangements. The industry was plagued by ethics issues and constantly overshadowed
by the pharma ‘big brother’. In the last few years the industry has worked very hard to
restructure its image. The quality of people joining the industry has had a catalytic
impact on improving the image of the industry. Considered the ‘sunrise’ industry of the
new millennium, healthcare today attracts the best talent from across industry segments.
Established over 106 years ago Becton Dickinson is a US$ 5.7 Billion Fortune 500
Company. It operates in 100 Countries across the world with 3 core areas of businesses.
BD is one of the largest suppliers of medical devices and diagnostic systems worldwide.
From fledgling manufacturers of medical tools to a high technology healthcare company,
the common threads of commitment to quality and dedication to helping people live
healthy lives have always remained strong.
In the early eighties the company focused on a tough restructuring and the company
secured it’s long-term competitiveness. It entitled investment in areas of strength, pulling
back from the weak businesses.
In the early 90’s the meaning of quality was expanded within the company to include the
human resource function. Human resources were now managed as a strategic asset
necessary to foster growth. Emphasis on quality, clarity of goals, openness to change
coupled with the concept of leadership teams has enabled the organization to deal more
effectively with emerging challenges at the eve of the new millennium.
Becton Dickinson India
Present in India from 1990 as a liason office Becton Dickinson India was set up as fully

class manufacturing in India at Bawal, Haryana. The Indian subsidiary is headquartered
out of Gurgaon with a nationwide presence.
BD India went through a very tough phase of business consolidation and restructuring
during 2001-02 including a complete top management overhaul. Unrealistic and inflated
growth, dumping of goods in the market, ethical issues with front line staff were just
some of the problems the company had to rectify.
In its new avtaar the company has improved productivity and increased operational
excellence with a focus on its people. The top management team comes from a rich mix
of multinationals including HLL, P&G, 3M, Perfetti, Coke, ICI just to name a few
companies. Today the leadership team in BD is working towards building an
organization which will lead the healthcare charter in India, besides building an
organization culture which is fun and yet performance oriented.
