Time : 3 hours Full Marks : 100

Answer any FIVE questions.

1. a) A synchronous generator is connected to a long transmission line which can be
considered to be consisted of distributed parameters terminating in its
characteristics impedance. Stating assumptions clearly, show that the
transmission line can be represented by a distance velocity lag, dead time.
b) How the stability of a system containing a single element with time lag can be
formulated, Explain. [12+8]

2. a) Deduce the necessary and sufficient conditions of stability due to the effect of a
small parameter on automatic regulating systems, which raises the order of the
equation by two.
b) The characteristic equation of an alternator with continuously acting solenoid-
type automatic voltage regulator is approximately given by :

where TM and TA are respectively electromechanical and armature time

constant of the A.V.R. and TG is the alternator field time constant, K =
overall gain. Investigate the effect of small parameters on (i) TA (ii) TM and
(iii) both TM and TA. [15+5]

3. a) A stable automatic regulating system is defined by the following equation :-ao

Xj + aj X) + a2 Xj = 0

Derive from fundamentals, an expression for the integral T,

oc
so that = J (x,2 + x2 x22) dt. o
b) A system is defined by :

withx (0) = 1, x(0) = 0, and x2 = 2

4. a) An automatic regulating system has a structural configuration of two aperiodic

links in series and an integrating link in series. A stabilising link of the type
[(TP/l + Tp)] is connected across the first link. Write down the characteristic
equation and the degenerated equation. Also, determine the condition of
stability.
b) State whether it can be shown that an integrating link with an unity (negative)
feed back is equal to an aperiodic link. [15+5]

5. a) The structural configuration of a motor and controller is given by (Fig.-l):-

Determine what must be the time constant of viscous friction, T3, of the
controller if the motor has a field time constant Tj = 1.0 sec, amplification
K-i = 2 and for controller T2 = 0.1 sec, K2 = 20.
b) What are the most significant properties that determine the quality of automatic
regulating systems? Discuss about the integral quality evaluations, in brief.

6. In the structural diagram of a closed loop automatic control system, the basic
elements are represented by four series connected aperiodic links. The data of the
individual links is as follows :
I1! =0.01 K! = 100
T2 = 0.5 K2 = 1
T3 = 0.5 x = 0.2
T4-I

flexible negative feedback network having a transfer function of the type . +
be connected in two different ways.
a) When the stabilizing feedback network encloses only the first link.
b) When the stabilizing feedback network encloses the first two links.
Construct the D-decomposition curve in terms of the overall gain factor K to
ascertain the influence of the two structures on the possibility of obtaining a better
quality of transient response. It is to be noted that the gain factors K3 and K4 are
selected from within the region of stability after the construction of the D-
decomposition curve in terms of K = K] K2 K3 K4 has been completed. [10+10]

T3=0.5Sec T4 = 0.01 Sec
The overall gain of the system Kav = 800.
b) Show that if a stabilizing device in the form of RC circuit is introduced into the
system, the system will remain stable for an infinite increase of its gain with
T = 0.01 and K3 K4 K5 = 100. [13+7]

8. a) Find the overall transfer function of an Amplidyne and an armature controlled

d.c. motor with field excitation current kept constant.
b) Explain the working principle of the automatic regulating system for the d.c.
