Agriculture being the backbone of Indian Economy and in view of the

significant position of Arecanut and Spices in India's cropping pattern,
collection, maintenance and dissemination of area and production statistics
of these crops, assume prime importance. With this objective, the Directorate
of Arecanut and Spices Development, under the Ministry of Agriculture,
Government of India, has been compiling data on area, production and
productivity of Arecanut and all spice crops from various sources like
Directorate of Economics and Statistics, New Delhi; State Departments of
Economics and Statistics / Agriculture / Horticulture; Spices Board, Cochin;
and Food and Agriculture Organization, Rome. These data can be utilized in
estimation of economic growth indicators for an agrarian country like India.

The Publication "Area and Production Statistics of Arecanut and Spices"

compiled by this Directorate contains Country-wise, State-wise and District-
wise data on area, production and productivity of Arecanut and Spices and
thereby serves as a mirror of progress in agriculture at All India level as well
as across the States. I thank all agencies who have been providing us the
required data, well in time.

I am sure that this Publication will serve as a valuable source of information

to the policy makers, administrators, researchers and all others engaged in
agriculture development.

Efforts have been made to minimize errors in the compilation and collation
process of the vast data. The Directorate welcomes constructive suggestions
to improve the contents and presentation of this Publication.
