Solution:
A body of mass m, initially moving with velocity u, accelerates at a constant rate a. It attains a
final velocity v after time t. This acceleration is caused by a force, F. Now, according to
Newton’s second law of motion, the rate of change of momentum of a body is directly
proportional to the applied force. Mathematically, it is represented as

The rate of change of velocity is acceleration, i.e.,

Using this, we get

F ∝ ma

Or, F = kma

Where, k is a constant

Now, we say that the force that causes a unit acceleration in a body having a unit mass is the
unit force, i.e.,

F = 1 unit if m = 1 unit and a = 1 unit

Therefore, k = 1

∴ F = ma

This is the mathematical formulation of Newton’s second law of motion.
