Legend: f- frequency; %- percentage of answer; *-questions having NO as the correct
answer.

Item number one, which states that vasectomy, is a permanent contraceptive

method, with the highest frequency of correct answer at 105 over 127 equivalent to
82.677%. This may due to the vast information dissemination about vasectomy.
Vasectomy is often equated to the Ligation of females, for this reason people have the
connotation of permanency as ligation does. On the other hand, there are 22 incorrect
answers, with a percentage value of 17.323%. This may due to the current technology
of vasectomy reversal, although there is an available microsurgery to reverse
vasectomy, vasectomy is still considered a permanent contraceptive method.
Item number three asks if vasectomy will give an immediate protection from
impregnating, this number got has the highest frequency of incorrect answer at 76
equating to 59.843%. This may be due to the lack of comprehensiveness and emphasis
of discussion of vasectomy in symposiums, family planning health teachings or other
form of dissemination. People are more often than not interested on the effects, that is
the positive and negative, rather than on how the procedure will be done. And as
according to Antonio de los Reyes of the Population Research institute of the
Philippines, the Philippine health system does not effectively reach more than 40% of
the total population. Scarcity of resources, limitations on public utilities and
infrastructure, unavailability of trained medical personnel, and often sheer
incompetence, all conspire to limit Rural Health Centers to the poblaciones, or the
municipality’s central settlements. The acceptor is supposedly empowered to make an
informed choice. This approach is set within the ideal scenario of a clinic, with ample
information on the pros and cons of each family planning method. Yet this scenario is
far from the realities of the field (2002). Furthermore, there are 51 out of 127 who
answered it correctly, that is 40.157% of the sample population, this may be due to their
personal research and significant other information, a patient who has undergone
vasectomy must use another method of birth control until you have a follow-up sperm
count test 2 months after the vasectomy (or after 10 to 20 ejaculations over a shorter
period of time). Once the sperm count is zero, no other birth control method is
necessary.

Legend: f- frequency; %- percentage of answer; *-questions having NO as the correct
answer.

Item number five, which states that a man’s penis will still be painful for several
years after undergoing vasectomy, got the highest frequency of correct answer, with 97
out of 127respondents equivalent to 76.378%. This may be due to the reason that
people think the body regenerates and repairs itself so wounds would be repaired in
time. On the contrary, 23.622% or 30 of the respondents answered incorrectly, this may
be due to the misconception that the effect of the wound from the surgery would lead to
long term discomfort and pain.
Item number two, which says vasectomy will put a man in greater risk for
prostate cancer, had the highest frequency of incorrect answer at 42.520% or 54 out of
127 respondents. This may be due to the reason information that male candidates for
vasectomy are checked and assessed and on the long run they were able to diagnose
prostate cancer. Studies in the risks of prostate cancer and testicular cancer in
vasectomized men are ongoing, but so far nothing has been proven. The same number
has incurred 57.480% or 73 correct answers from 127 respondents. This may be due to
the readings done or, symposiums or health teachings attended by the males on the
matter.

149 67.727 71 32.273
method for men.
* Legend: f- frequency; %- percentage of answer; *-questions having NO as the correct
answer.

Item number one, which states that vasectomy, is a permanent contraceptive

method. Like the college graduates, college undergraduates also has this number with
highest frequency of correct answer having a rate of 162 out of 220 respondents,
accounting to 73.636% of the sample population of undergrads. This may due to the
vast information dissemination introduction about vasectomy. Vasectomy is often
equated to the Ligation of females, for this reason people has the connotation of
permanency as ligation does. The same number however got 26.364% or 58 out of 220
respondents who have incorrect answer. This may be due to the current technology of
vasectomy reversal, although there is an available microsurgery to reverse vasectomy,
vasectomy is still considered a permanent contraceptive method.
Item number seven, which states that vasectomy, is not a life threatening
procedure; also had 162 over 220 respondents who had answered it correctly. This may
be due to the reason that people think that vasectomy is not a major operation and the
fact that it will not require a candidate to be admitted in the hospital. Vasectomy is not a
life threatening procedure; it is a minor microsurgery and will not post great harm to the
patient. However, still, 58 respondents did not get it correctly, that is 26.364% of the
sample population. This may be due to the connotation that vasectomy is equated to
castration, and the fact that it is a surgery.
Item number eight, which states that vasectomy can spare my wife from using
other contraceptive method, has the highest frequency of incorrect answer with a
percentage of 70.455% that is 155 respondents out of 220. This may be due to the
reason that there are more seminars or program designed for maternal-child health
rather than the promotion of vasectomy as a way for males to participate in spacing
childbirth, making males less confident and aware of the effectiveness of vasectomy.
For the first weeks after a patient has undergone vasectomy, the patient must use
another method of birth control until you have a follow-up sperm count test 2 months
after the vasectomy (or after 10 to 20 ejaculations over a shorter period of time). Once
the sperm count is zero, no other birth control method is necessary. Contrariwise, 65 of
the 220 respondents or 29.545% got the correct answer. This may be due to the reason
that males believe that when they undergo vasectomy, will be able to control pregnancy
of their partner if they engage in sexual activities thus males will have successful family
planning. Another reason is the increased in number of children pushed males to
undergo vasectomy since they are decision makers of the family with regards to the
number of children they prefer.
