National College Carol I and the Lyrical Theatre Elena Teodorinii

The National College Carol 1, which houses in his building also the Lyrical Theatre Elena
Teodorinii , is an important structure of the city Craiova , which imposes itself through massively
in the center of the town on the Ion Marinescu Street nr. 6.

This college is the second oldest school in Romanian language and was founded in 1826

The building was reconditioned many times due to earthquakes but also cause of the 1930 fire
witch resulted in the total rebuild of the lateral sides of the structure under the guidance of the
constructions engineer Giovani Battista Peresutti.

This structure is built in a neoclassic style, style which is easily recognizable due to the horizontal
lines covering the building. Build entirely from cement and bricks the college stretches on a
considerable surface having 2 main entrances and 2 secondary ones.

On the central facade where the first main entrance is, in front of which the statue of the king
Carol I resides, you can see the influence of the romantic style on the center windows which are
accompanied by columns beautifully decorated.

The windows are symmetrically positioned all along the building and on the lower and upper side
they are rectangular, only the middle ones having an arcade style.

The rectangular entrance door is also decorated with columns but also with small statues on top ,
signs of the baroc influences.

The central part of the building has on top a semidome in which we can fine a small square
window also decorated with architectural elements.

The other main entrance of the Carol I college, the side one, takes a semicircular shape , being
very little different from the first one. On this side we can see balconies on both levels and we will
also find a dome much more imposing. The same column and window structure is kept but the
entrance has 5 massive wooden doors, doors that now have arcade style, not rectangular.

On the lateral sides, were currently the students entrance is, you can notice tiny sculptures which
represent a human head.

At the roof level, just on the building corners, we can see some triangular themes, nicely colored
with a bright blue.

The Lyrical Theatre building resides on the street Mihai Viteazu (Michael the Brave) nr. 7. This is
a much simple structure, in a rectangular shape, with windows and a typical entrance, having no
external decorations. You notice the alternation brick-cement which offers the building a linear
image.

Since it was founded in 1857 this theatre enjoyed a real success. Here great artists share there
talent with the audience.

The theatre holds opera shows, operetta, ballet and musicals for children. The most known of this
being:
