Begun as a collaborative workshop with students Marielle Vargas and Erwin

Riefkohl (Syracuse University), Matteo Bonanni (Università di Pisa), and Mar-
nix de Jong (Technische Universiteit Delft) while studying abroad in Florence,
Italy, the project called for the rebuilding of a theatre on the site where it had
been bombed and left vacant since WWII. Our group chose to not only me-
morialize the theare but also the 70 year-old vacancy of the site. Following
the workshop the initial scheme was modified and resolved as an individual
project.

Working with fellow Syracuse University

student Galen Richmond in the Comprehensive
Design Studio the project was sited adjacent
to Syracuse’s Center of Excellence. This
green incubator business building utilizes an
existing historical wooden structure (u-haul
storage building) to create a sustainable
campus-like working environment. The brick
building skin ties the new and old programs
together while morphing to respond to the
building’s different site orientations.

As part of the Advanced Building Systems

course and a collaboration with architecture
student Dennis Harvey and engineering stu-
dents Yixing Chen and Zhaozhou Meng, we first
began by analyzing and documenting building
systems in Louis Kahn’s Yale Center for British
Art. The second phase of the project required
us to propose an alteration intended to optimize
building performance through the integration of
sustainable systems.

This design competition which proposed the

development and design of Northern Ontario
School of Architecture in Sudbury Ontario was
completed with students Timothy Gale, Dennis
Harvey, and Nilus Klingel. The design utilized
a vacant alley to connect the cities principal
retail and recreation centers. The studio was
envisioned as a single floating volume which
connects to the ground plane below via gallery,
shop, and lab programs.

Assisting Professor Timothy Stenson and his design practice, student Dennis Harvey and
I constructed a 1/4” sectional model for Syracuse’s Home Turf Exhibition, which included
Professor Stenson’s work. Additionally, working in the summer with Prof. Stenson, a digi-
tal model and renderings were produced as a follow up to Syracuse’s From the Ground

While interning at Joeb + Partners I led a barn renovation project which included
client meetings, site documentation, schematic design, design development, bid
set coordination, and assembling specs. The previous under-used barn was
re-clad, had its interior retrofitted to serve as an art studio and lounge, and its rear
facade opened to view the woods. Continued as a design-build project, the barn
renovation will be completed in the Winter of 2011.

A remnant of the age-old public market still remains within the

fabric of the contemporary city. Operating in ‘public benefit’
produce terminal markets are distinct from the supermarket
food system and are the primary logistical space that provide
to independent retailers such as bodegas and restaurants in
the city. As more food is consumed outside of the home
(more than half), these urban logistical spaces have a
revived role in providing fresh food to the urban populous
and being integral to inner-city economies. As such what
are the possibilities that this these economically vital sites
can gain cultural importance. At these markets is there
an opportunity for the economic efficiencies of logistical
architecture to collide with the social productivity of public
architecture? As defined by Clare Lyster, such a space
would be a collisive site:

“moments where excessive accumulation of
exchange prevails, that design possibilities emerge, staging
opportunities for public space and other programmed
landscapes that can further occupy these sites with
activities and events other than those that were originally
intended.”

It is my contention that by through the collusion of

public space into the logistical spaces of terminal produce
markets, that a new typology can develop that reifies urban
food systems and can illuminate issues of urban food crisis,
food (in)justice, and urban health. By intervening onto these
0 1,400
Miles
existing landscapes, the necessity and pleasure of food as
public discourse can be reinstated, and re-imagined.
