Morger & Degelo Architekten Nadolny House

Dornach, Switzerland

In the far south or the urban environment of Basel is situated the village Oomach. Among other family houses, slightly elevated from a small crossroads, the light and compact cedar wood house is standing on a terrace, The disposition of plan and elevation is determined by the open view to the south on one hand. and the restricting neighborhood to the north on the other', While the north-oriented entrance side allows hardly any outlooks and the lateral windows only selective ones, the southern front with its wide glazed surface is opened up,

Only an efficient modular wood construction enables such a tremendous contrast of the undividedly nO',"ing living room on the ground floor- and the various private rooms, separ-ated by sliding wall elements, on the upper floor, The load is transmitted to the outer walls, to the glued wall elements as well as to the massive, dark blue window fl-ame of the airing casement. Its static purpose goes with its intention of design, stressing its plasticity in opposition to unremovable glass Therefore only he actual opellings -the airing casements- are to be noticed, while the permanent glass, functioning as outlook and light opening, IS part of the outer membrane, frarneless and flush,

Mario Botta

House in Montagnola

Montagnola, Switzerland

The architecture of Mario Botta is characterized by its formal power- and the strong pr-esence of its volumes. His buildings do not attempt to blend into their surroundings: rather, they aim to impose themselves on them, to implant themselves with all the vigor of their architectural mass and become landmarks in the landscape. This single-family dwelling is a clear example of this tendency. Located m the Swiss canton of Ticino. it is not subor-dinated to its Alpine setting. Instead, it takes advantage of the r-elief of the setting to emerge with force from the site, seeking to make a plastic, expr-essive impact

This project bases its formal strength 011 volume. The building rises out of the gr-ound to form a large semicylindrical body.

The curve of the outer wall is interrupted by a large glazed area which is set back from the principal plane. These windows 1100d the house with light and open it up to views of the valley. A mIN of bull's-eyes along the top introduce a nautical idiom in 0 the Alpine context

A longitudinal body housing the leisure facilities (swimming pools, sauna and gym) and a large garage were attached to the main volume, taking advantage of the slope.

The Folding House is a 300-square-metre family home located in the Melbourne suburb of Toorak. The house is a series of three folding planes that wrap into each other. Each folding plane contains a different zone within the house: living, sleeping and garage. The exterior sculptural wrapping quality of the house is extruded throughout the interior. The interior ceiling spaces are articulated by these fo ld i n 9 ele men ts. • Th e house is d esig ned a ro u nd a la rg e north-facing courtyard. which also provides a buffer between the sleeping quarters. Natural light is filtered throughout the house at a II times 0 f the day. Th e to ld i ng e lem e n ts provide the sepa ra tion between zones, negating the need for corridors,
