fourth year

blacksburg, virginia

overview:
A semester project to design a research facility to support the growing wine industry on
a site straddling a major interstate. The university is interested in a facility that embodies
adequately the research and innovation spirit of a land-grant university.

program:
8,000 square feet of tempered operation space, 7,000 square feet of tempered storage
in addition to a research lab, office space, primary fermentation, secondary fermentation,
bottling, tasting room and gift shop.

concept:
Bisected by a busy interstate, two components of a research winery form a visual and physi-
cal connection of a vineyard. The research winery suggests both a new gateway and a new
link between student residences and the majority of academic buildings.

fourth year
fall 2009

overview:
A four week project to delineate a room and a garden. The physical and cultural context of
the specific site is a primary consideration.

program:
A room and a garden in an architectural relationship set somewhere within the town of
Blacksburg. The selection of site challenged the understanding of site and interpretation of
the landscape.

concept:
A structure placed within a garden at the base of the site becomes a visual and experiential
measure of the change in topography of the site.

overview:
An eight week project situates a gallery for Virginia Tech within the existing town and campus
fabric of Blacksburg, Virginia.

program:
The program asked for a gallery within an existing parking lot at the corner of Otey and
Roanoke Street, retaining an existing tree. The gallery includes permanent and temporary
exhibition space, an outdoor sculpture court, storage for art work, and necessary support
spaces.

concept:
A demarcation of the corner of Roanoke and Otey Street reroutes pedestrians from campus
to downtown. In passing, the building offers pedestrians a view of art within.

third year
spring 2009
riva san vitale, switzerland

overview:
A twelve week semester project within the residency abroad program in Riva San Vitale,
Switzerland. The project challenges the question of a transition from terra firma to acqua.

program:
A boat stop to serve the existing network operated by La Società Navigazione del Lago di
Lugano for the town of Riva. The port promotes accessibility to Riva’s two important monu-
ments, the Battistero and Santa Croce while also providing an espresso bar at the station
between land and water.

concept:
As a mediator between land and water, the design engages the threshold by extending the
urban plaza into the water; a fluid movement through the space culminates in a room with
precisely framed views of land and water.

land landscape typologies
third year
fall 2008
blacksburg, virginia

overview:
Winning entry in a ten day competition to develop a building at the intersection of three
different landscape typologies within the boundaries of a site overlooking Virginia Tech’s
stone quarry.

program:
Four programmatic elements (detonation tower, reading room, specimen drying shed,
and outdoor workspace) suggest a range of structural and material responses, degrees of
enclosure, and relationships to the site.

concept:
A unifying structure studied of programmatic elements acts as a natural mediator between
the suburban and industrial constructs of the site; a ‘natural billboard’ creates transparency
with the environment.

third year

overview:
A study of tension created between the artificial and natural at a site in the Great Smoky
Mountains in North Carolina.

program:
The program evaluated the historic nature of the site to create a program in response includ-
ing a place of shelter, reflection, and story telling.

concept:
A linear building placed at the line between an artificial and natural landscape allows visitors
to learn about the landscape and its layers of history. A path through the structure is subtly
disjointed forcing the visitor to wander and explore the different complexities of the site.

overview:
a semester project to design an infant toy with multiple means of interaction. Packaging was
developed in relation to the design of the toy.

concept:
Two varieties of wood, ipe and white oak, intersect to form a joint. A void is created within
the white oak in order for copper spheres to be inserted. The spheres create a rattling sound
while further lightening the white oak. The juxtaposition between each allows the object to
roll.
