Bachelor of Fine Arts students
from College of Architecture and
Fine Arts (CAFA) stood out in the
10th ArtPetron National Compe-
tition at the Mega Plaza, Makati
City, August 31.
As a part of its advocacy in pro-
moting Filipino art, the competi-
tion’s theme entitled, “Alay sa Nata-
tanging Pamayanan,” celebrated its
dynamic partnership with the people
in the community. The contest was
composed of three categories includ-
ing oil or acrylic, water-based media
and photography.

the March 2010 Mechanical En-
gineering Licensure Examination
and bagging gold in the Philippine
Society of Mechanical Engineers
(PSME) National Quiz Bee and
PSME Academic Student Compe-
tition.
Earning a passing rate of 68 per-
cent, TUP-M produced 17 passers out
of 25 examinees given in the cities
of Manila and Cebu. The new set of
licensed Mechanical Engineers were

Engr. Jedel G. Agron, faculty researcher and specialist of Con-
struction Engineering and Management from Civil Engineering Depart-
ment, emphasized the superiority of TUP in the field of Engineering, Sci-
ence and Technology after writing the best research entitled “Effects of
the Philippine Furnace Slag on the Fresh and Hardened Properties of
Concrete.”
According to Engr. Agron’s
winning research, furnace slag is a
by-product of steel having proper-
ties which are almost the same as
cement that makes it a very latent
replacement for it. A concrete has a
composition of cement, aggregate
and water. He found out that in-
stead of using 100 percent cement,
furnace slag could be added. It was
observed that the property of ce-
ment in the concrete was lessened
to 20 percent which turned to be
more economical.
Noticing this remarkable dis-
covery of Engr. Agron, the Philip-
pine Association of Institution for
Research, Inc. awarded him in line
with the International Conference

volunteers in bloodletting declined
to 15 contributors, July 16.
The blood-donation campaign was
held annually at the Technological
University of the Philippines-Manila
(TUP-M) Clinic, encouraging the
students, faculty and employees to
voluntarily donate blood for a good
cause.
“The number of volunteers who
donated blood this year was decreased
because of the late dissemination of
the announcement of Philippine Na-
tional Red Cross (PNRC) about the

ing Trees for a Greener Future”,

shouted Carlos Celdran as
he breaks in the Manila Cathedral
Church in the middle of a mass
last time I opened the television,
dressed just like Jose Rizal with a
placard on hand with “Damaso”
written on it. What he did was in-
sulting to the Catholic People. No
religion should be insulted. After
that, he was put in jail.
He said in an interview that it was
not his original plan. He planned to
tent outside the church and wait for
the friars to come and hold his plac-
ard above his head for them to see.
But it started to rain so he entered the
church. So the events turned out dif-
ferently, more artistic.
He reviewed us about the history
of our country in the hands of the
dominating friars. He taught us that
the history repeats itself
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Catho-
lic, I’m pro-life and anti-abortion. But
this time, I’m firm that the Church’s
position is inappropriate.

A
s our country was plagued
with various economic, po-
litical and social turmoil,
one of the critical barometers that
has to be determined is the youth’s
response and survival in issues
imposed by crises like these. It is
a prime query how we teenagers
merge awareness and sense of do-
ing mere simple actions to at least
resolve the uncertainties that hin-
der our progress. After all, recent
observations in youth’s standing
reveal mixed signals.
Youth has been always told to be
the allegorical symbol of the hope
of our nation. It was since then the
father of perennially quoted sound
bites, Jose Rizal, once told those
youth in his period to lay aide in our
country after being sent, educated
and enlightened to other countries
in becoming illustrados. Surely, that
was after many, many years ago. But
now, if you are going to stride along
the stretch of the metropolis and ven-
ture into the urban wilderness, what
you would probably see are constel-
lations of dark clouds: child laborers,

Church is in constant fight to stop
the bill from passing as a law, put-
ting their credibility and the common
good of the people at stake. They

class nation. We are in a nation that

pride. We must create policies
based on our rationalities and
logic about the very basics
of instinct and survival. Our
population is shockingly increasing
enormously, yet hungry and dying.
No one can eat his faith and pride.
The Philippines, having 100 mil-
lion of Filipinos today, is the 12th
most populous country around the
globe, being the fourth crowded place
next to India, Bangladesh and Japan,
with the second highest growth rate.
We also have the highest fertility rate
in Asia.
It has been calculated that from the
1.71 million registered babies a year,
at least 7,800 infant deaths could
be prevented through proper birth
spacing. In addition to this, 200,000
women will be spared from illness
associated with pregnancy. Many of
these women who need family plan-
ning services are the poorest.

I say this not to denigrate or to
cast blame presumptuously to to-
day’s youth because I, myself, is part
of it, too. My point here is to say to

out. But then, above all in my case,
what’s more sickening is the fact that
in the end, after burning eyebrows
just to finish studies and hold on em-
ployment to be an asset of our state,
many people moralize society by
sending a subliminal message: that
our country is hopeless and we could
do nothing about it.

how bad he feels about
our country as if his
stay here is pointless. It

there. It’s constant, just like the air
that you breathe. You cannot perceive
it personally, but you could actually
feel it within yourself. You inhale it
and you find satisfaction. You exhale
it and you feel inhaling it again.
The answer is not being pessi-
mistic, not giving up faith and going
abroad to discover better opportuni-
ties there. What is needed is a shift
in the collective consciousness. We
need to change our way of thinking.
Perhaps, the solution is a compro-
mise. I propose that we, teenagers,
start acclaiming the emergence of
new youth. We have to uplift and
develop ourselves in terms of many
aspects. We must engage ourselves
in sphere of activities that reveal our
sense of being. And at the same time,
envision us to grow, to extend and to
be wiser, more efficient people. Call
it the process of reinventing oneself.
My affiliation with Philippine
Artisan (PA) is indeed momentous.
It really marked another milestone
in the history of my core existence.
Truth to tell, as I paved my first leap
in my college life here in TUP, I al-
ready promised myself that I would
join the student publication as soon
as I can. I really don’t know why I
feel that instinct either. It’s just that
I thirst so much, I lack something
unrecognizable. I am fulfillment-

not struggling to feed their children
in this economy so poor and weak.
They are not exposed to the realms of
the full range of poverty of the coun-
try. With the exemption ofcourse to
those priests who have their children
with their “faithful” lovers and mis-
tresses. How can we believe them if
the officials and leaders themselves
are abusive to their moral teachings
with the increasing scandals of sexu-
al abuse to youth?
At this point, majority of the
Filipinos disagree with the
Church’s teachings. Even
Catholic theologians admit
that contraception and divorce
are not morally equivalent to
abortion and euthanasia. Ma-
jority believes that a law is
necessary requiring the state
to distribute contraceptives
to those who need these con-
doms and birth-control pills. About
82 percent of Filipinos think that it
is the government’s duty to provide
knowledge, services and materials
for modern family planning meth-
ods, both natural and artificial.
As the epic battle heat up between
the Church and State on who’s really
the good and the evil, the ones who
are really suffering are the mothers,
babies and families. Each day as the
showdown goes on, 11 mothers die,
leaving their babies homeless and
putting their lives at risk as well.
It is clear and simple. We need
widespread education about any
modern population control program
methods. The government should
fund the RH bill including the dis-
tribution and use of contraceptives

hungry. And fortunately, being given
a grandiose opportunity to be part of
PA’s staffers, I did not hesitate to grab
it quickly. I held it with no doubt or
second thought.
Before, nearly all of the things
happening around me were just mere
events. To me, they were mostly
devoid of meaning. But after be-
ing here in PA, I noticed that I was
able to expand more my borders, to
widen my standpoint, and to improve
my journalistic skills. Through this, I
transmuted myself. I metamorphosed
myself. I mutated myself I was able
to reinvent myself.
Reinvention is truly beneficial
and helpful not only to our inner
selves, but also to the society we
belong to. It propels an idea of start-
ing the “reform” and
“revolution” within
us first, before letting
its claws of influence
and better change gush
through the stream of
citizen’s conscious-
ness. But then, my
meaning of reinventing
is re-establishing our whole being,
which seemed to be in synch with
our empowerment. This is indeed
not just transforming us to whatever
individuality we wanted to have, but
configuring in our blood the skills,
prowess and competence we ought
to have. To make it clearer, just take
a glimpse at the new social group
called Jejemons.
Jejemons are quite hilarious and
entertaining. With their indifferent
and “alienated” language that make
everyone scratch their heads and read
as if a 6-year old grade-one student,

without being scared to the wrath
of the Church. We need to expand
the people’s knowledge about their
choices in having a family to stop
poverty, to prevent untimely and un-
wanted pregnancy, to avoid abortion,
to stabilize the economy, to feed the
children.
At the end of the day, the Church,
like any other individual institution,
has the right to present its side and
be heard. However, it should also re-
spect the laws of the State. And I find
it stupid for the Church to meddle in
the government’s decisions and com-
mand in this modern republic. I’m
very much concerned about the fu-
ture of this country and I don’t want
the friars from Rizal’s time repeat its
abusive control today.
Here’s the realization, the problem
here is beyond the moral conscience
regarding sex. What we have here is
a Catholic church with their “highly-
principled” eyebrows held up high,
teaching the countrymen what’s re-
ally the only right and moral thing
to do. The same sacred church that
taught us that Eve came from the ribs
of Adam and will never be equal from
her source. The same divine church,
long time ago was responsible for
burning hundreds of the so-called
“witches” for the sake of their so-
called “faith.” The same aggressive
church today, threatening the nation
with excommunication from heaven,
eternal damnation to the fires of hell
with Satan and civil disobedience if
we don’t believe them. PA

where in the norms of everyone de-
spite their ages. Bearing their alpha-
numeric-symbolic-whatever lingo
trademark, a lot of people are really
influenced by their unnatural text-
messaging. Since then, many have
gone raising their eyebrows to their
“oddness” which may really have
affected their spelling and grammar
assessments. However, many still
adhere and continue to embrace their
peculiar, hippy culture. I just wonder
what Rizal, Balagtas and Manuel
Quezon’s commentaries are in stuffs
like these.
The real essence of reinvention
conveys unveiling of youth’s glory
which is sadly suppressed in the eyes
of many people nowadays. It includes
the increase in our caliber, strength
and confidence while enwrapping
us into a stable growth process and
never-ending changes that is self-
initiated. We must always bear in
our minds that the main reason why
progress is so dormant boils down
from this one common denominator:
there is no strong and fervent will
to change, and change once started,
isn’t totally sustained. Letting out the
immobile power within us is the sole
purpose of reinvention. Hence, as far
as we can discern, youth’s self-em-
powerment is the true meaning of it.
From now on, let’s get out from
the shell of insignificance and be-
lieve in the hidden capabilities we
boast. Let us launch reinvention. Let
us patiently wait and start keeping
selfless promises for the dawn which
surely lies ahead.

ctivism doesn’t always mean
violence. In some other ways,
it can also be a peaceful act of
promoting transparency and account-
ability.
Sympathy is the only affirmative ac-
tion that can be given by a student who
belongs in a non-activist-based univer-
sity regarding emerging impediments in
our country. Protest marches and dem-
onstrations are seen to be violent forms
of bad ratification for us. So instead of
agreeing to these kinds of view points re-
lating to perceived grievance issues, we,
as students, decisively choose to focus on
studies and other peculiar interests.
My awakening, sort of, started when I
became open-minded particularly on this
matter. As a writer of the Philippine Ar-

the government. But during those times,

KKK revolution which was promoted
by Andres Bonifacio symbolized these
vehement acts of activism. Many lost
their lives from obtaining freedom from
the Spaniards. It resulted to a huge trans-
formation, but still, it was condemned
by Jose Rizal’s wise and right peaceful
act of escaping human exploitation. By
means of his writings, he defended the
rights of Filipino independence and ad-
vocacy for reforms. At last, the demands
of the majority were articulated and that
was the activism at its best.
Perhaps, if we are going analyze
the recent generation, these two opposite
perceptions still exist. But the totally dis-
gusting part of these is that it’s not on a
Filipino versus intruder case but on a Fil-
ipino versus Filipino basis. Our fellows

determined mind and soul. Difficul-
ties and failures should not hinder us
towards attaining our goals in life,
for these things are common and are
parts of human nature.
We should not be deceived by
the nature of quandary – for the dan-
ger is not in a fall, but in failing to
rise. We should be determined never
to allow our enthusiasm to be
dampened by the discourage-
ments that inevitably come. It
would be necessary that when
we want something, we must
have it, no matter what.
We are confined with our
belief that this contentment is
threatening. Perhaps this may
be true, but having an enthusiastic
soul whose tendency is upward and
onward despite obstacles is admired
by everybody. It is our aspiration to
make a great change that may lead to
success, not only for us but for the
nation. These changes may be hard

corrupt their own fellow citizens. We are
living on a sole nation of misunderstand-
ings. This is the reason why activism al-
ways subsists. Let us think clearly that if
there are no negative actions, there will
be no reasons for complaints.
It came into a head. Like Rizal and
Bonifacio, not all state universities have
the same views about activism. The mis-
conception saying that those universities
who accredit activist’s organization are
said to be strong enough in revealing
issues. While

to be weak in
promoting reforms for developmental
interests. But the point is, preventing
dissent action doesn’t always mean that
we are afraid of deferring actions. All of
us were betrayed by the past. All of us
were exploited and demanded for a bet-
ter progress. And we are assuring that
when the time of a huge running down
came, we are like soldiers who are ready
to be visible in fighting reforms, come in
a monster meeting and attend a mass col-
laboration for a sole positive advocacy.

things as failure unless and until we
accept it as such.
Dilemma is a temporary defeat, a
time in which we can pause briefly,
re-evaluate our plans, and drive for-
ward with all the force that we are

the government. I am not encouraging
students to be a part of this kind of view
points. I am not totally against activism
but as it reaches the limitations result-
ing to mob violence, I will be the first to
condemn it. We have different views and
we have to respect that. The only thing
that we need is to be open-minded. We
are obliged to do actions unselfishly and
peacefully. Let us deprive the fear and
put into our minds that life for the nation
is worth dying for. And as I end up this
controversial opinion, let us put into our
minds the line of Rizal saying, “Unus In-

How long will I be waiting? How
long will it remain an aspiration?
I believe that students’ interest lies
on how facilities are well provided.
Their interest is the uttermost reason
contributing to their own initiative and
hardwork in pursuing burning desire
for a well-off future.
A need to improve facilities and
quality education cannot be achieved
by forcing students to shoulder the

Once, I have wished for spending my
four-year college in a prestigious insti-
tution on higher learning not because
I lack confidence nor I am timid of
declaring the name of my alma mater,
TUP. In fact, I am too proud to tell ev-
eryone that I’ll sooner become a prod-
uct of it, that I am a certified TUPian.
I’ve dreamt to study in those prominent
schools because I want to gain knowl-
edge and undergo practical lectures
from complete tools. Yes, I know that
TUP is one of our country’s state uni-
versities and TUPians are being subsi-

for the varsity in more than two years
since athletic fee increased? This is
for equipment, transportation, registra-
tions, uniforms, allowances and more.

ship to start with. And to every TUPian,
let’s not take a stand against each other
anymore, no more accusation and criti-
cism. Support is the finest thing that we
can give to the university. Censuring
them will not work but will only di-
minish trust and confidence. They need
everyone to stick up for.

gave pieces of advice to the incom-
ing board examinees to be prepared

tests namely: PSME National Quiz
Bee and the PSME Academic Stu-

Waging Battle for Education
The outrage of the education
sector continues to weigh upon the
students as the education became
a privilege and no longer a right
of every individual. Money is a
requirement for State Universities
and Colleges (SUCs) and the
government is letting go of its role
in funding SUCs properly despite
the constitutional mandate. As
this continues, a time will come
that education shall only belong to
those who can afford the price.
Now, many wonder why
government’s consideration
education became least.
Massive cuts in the budget for
SUCs have been a phenomenal issue
these days. In the course of this
embezzlement, lots of public students
could expect higher, more rampant
increase to their tuition and other
miscellaneous fees, not to mention
the further commercialization of
education. Making it less accessible
to the poor, this budget cut in SUCs
is certainly a total injustice. It seemed
those people who could not afford
private schools’ offers. But then,
because of today’s terrible budget
cut in education division, which was
allegedly the biggest one so far in our
country’s heritage, SUCs now begin
to have sudden diminishment of its
public character.
It is clear that we are still suffering
with the idea that our nation is
under-plague of profound and
widespread problems compared to
other nations. With the fact that the
education is the linear foundation
to of progress, why does the national
government implement collapsing
assumptions through a mandate of
a budget cut? It is an indication that
the system of education being run
here in the Philippines falls beyond
disappointment, among all Filipinos
who value education most.
Because of the lacking interest
of the government to fund education
sector fully enough, no more, no
less, the youth also lacks the urge to

dreams into reality, especially to
perspective that if this budget cut
would continue to materialize, SUCs’
tuition fees would move up and up
until it become equal to those of
private institutions. Pretty bleak, but
that’s the reality. Time would come
that tertiary education’s raging cost
would be as high as anyone could
ever imagine. It’s having same old
service and features, but with higher,
more depressing and inconsiderable
amounts. Because of this, financially-
challenged citizens and students will
not be able to have government’s
support and consideration.
The solution is simple: re-channel
the funds anticipated for debt-
paying service, military and graft-
and-corruption-prone benefaction
programs to the sector of education.
However, if the government would
still continue this total mockery and
indiscretion of allocation of funds,
we don’t have any choice but to fight
for this battle. After all, youth’s voice
and response is the most powerful
thing of all.
Education must be seen as an
element in the covenant we have
in everyone’s aspiration of wealth.
We are under the thirst of financial

the betterment of the majority. Most
of the time, the officers we have
reasoned out the fact that they were
just appointed or that they were just
returning favor to the students. It is,
for me, a very unacceptable rationale
being unleashed when things turn
upside down.
When a leader accepts any position
to uplift the interest of his organization,
he also accepts the reality that he has to
dole out utmost dedication and fervor in
all his obligations and responsibilities.
He can never excuse himself from
irregularities by simply saying that his
leading was never a choice. I say, never
becomes their leader, he should not
put into mind the title of the people
he serves. Because if he did, he shall
always have the perception to reason
out the abilities of his people and pass
on to them the obligation to turn that
inconvenience the other way around
(in cases that it is actually his sole
duty). They are his constituents, in the
word constituent’s extreme cultural
ratification. If they are tagged into
their profession, say teachers, doctors,
engineers, etc., they certainly do not
need a leader for they already know
what to do. But if they are justly
considered “constituents,” then they
certainly need someone to put them
forward into the forefront of the
services they deserve.
The drastic change into the
personality, behavior and perception
of the young leaders of today is
saddening me, personally. Where
are the idealisms of Rizal, the great
martyr, and the defending principles
of Bonifacio? Were they put six feet
below the ground right at the same
spot where their bodies were also
buried?
across their way. How do we deal with
people’s claim that the Technological
University of the Philippines is
earning a bunch of conservative young
torchbearers? It is not only attributed
to the big student institutions and
organizations of the university but to
the entire student community as whole,
including the classroom setup.
Conservative in the sense that
the youthful pillars we have
today are mere “go with the
flow” individuals who do
nothing but affirm with what
is just tendered in front of
them. It is therefore high time that
TUPian potential and current leaders
prove that there are no passive leaders
within them.
A leader should never get contented
because the moment he does will be
the same moment quality leadership
ends and service remains dormant.
Instead, he should always set a higher
standard of satisfaction and hit them
with full passion.
It is in my perception that a
leader is never born. He is made.
He can never be defined by blood
running through him. Instead, the
core elements that construe him are
burning desire of effecting change
and will to transform his people,
even himself. Leadership is always
a choice, never a co-incidence. PA
