Ruggedness and waterproofing are the hear t and soul of
ever y scope we make. Why? If your scope breaks or the
lenses fog, it’s absolutely useless. This doesn’t mean the
optics take a backseat. Leupold optics are wor th going to

between optical excellence and total durability. Since the
production of our ver y first scope in 1947, we’ve been the
benchmark by which all other rifle scopes are judged.
Arm Yourself With Knowledge
Of course, we want you to make an educated decision
when choosing your next riflescope. So in the midst of the
confusion created by lesser brands, Leupold offers you
this clear look at the facts surrounding optics and
riflescope construction.
Optics 101
On a basic level, all rifle scopes work the same. Light rays
enter the objective lens, which magnifies them. This
upside-down image travels to the erector lens system,
which flips the image right-side up and further magnifies it.
The ocular lens magnifies the image a final time, then
projects it to your eye. However, all scopes certainly don’t
per form the same, optically or mechanically.
Light Transmission
Critical Optical Properties
In a riflescope, getting the maximum amount of pure
light to your eye is critical. At Leupold, we call this light
management. The following are critical optical properties
to look for in a riflescope, to determine how well it
manages light.
Contrast is the best indicator of proper light management.
Resolution and light transmission (often mistakenly called
light gathering) enhance contrast while glare degrades it.
Resolution means a crisp, finely detailed image. Without
good resolution the remaining optical elements are
useless.
Light Transmission is the measure of how much pure
light makes it through the lenses before reaching
your eye. It’s affected by the efficiency of the glass,
the quality of anti-reflective coatings, and the
control of glare.

The Mechanics Of Shooting Optics
Scopes are precision instruments with both stationar y and
moving par ts in a housing. They must withstand

good scope must have.
Ruggedness is a scope’s ability to take physical
abuse, such as repeated recoil and the rigors of
the field. Reticles can break. Seals can give way. Internal
systems can be blasted apar t. Only good design, materials,
and manufacturing can prevent

not waterproof. The challenge is developing seals that

Looking through the scope, the space between the tip of the thicker post and the center of the

reticle covers 16" at 200 yards, when set at low power.

So let’s say you’re targeting a deer whose body is 16" backbone to brisket. Adjust the power

selector so that the deer’s body fits between the center of the crosshair and the top of the lower

heavy post. Then, read the approximate distance in yards, from a minimum of 200 at low power

to a maximum of 600 at high power.

The range estimator is available on these Vari-X III models: 1.75-6x32mm E, 2.5-8x36mm, 3.5-

(Continued From Page 3) – Most of us fall into that first
category for the first few years of our hunting careers.
We see few enough bucks, and most of these we do see
within range are shot – or shot at – within a very few
seconds of the first sighting. We are killers, not hunters.
The distinction is a subtle one, but important. A true
hunter is a person who knows, loves, and understands
the game. He is a woodsman and wildlife-watcher as well
as a marksman. To him, a whitetail buck is much more
than a mere target; it is a complex mechanism which
responds to certain stimuli and reacts to various
physical and psychological motivations within the
context of the wild world in which it lives. The more the
hunter understands the “why” and the “how” of these
responses, the more successful he will be in predicting
when and where to hunt and in selecting
a hunting technique to fit the weather and terrain.
There is more to it than simply increasing one’s success
ratio, however. There is also the matter of coming to
know and appreciate the animal, if not as
an individual, at least as a species. The better one
understands the deer, the more one can appreciate the
sense of personal accomplishment from collecting a fine
specimen under sporting, fair-chase conditions.
There are basically two ways to locate a deer. One is
simply to do the same thing – something which has
proved to work in the past – all day, every day. It takes
patience, but it will work. An example is sitting on a
known whitetail trail until a buck comes along. If it’s a
good trail, and if other hunters don’t mess it up, and if
you have the ability to sit still for a long time, you’ll
eventually get a buck by this tactic. It is, in fact, about
as reliable a way as any, if the trail is well chosen. Many
successful hunters of my acquaintance regularly collect
their venison in this manner, relying on the fact that
whitetails are essentially creatures of habit.
The other basic method of harvesting a buck is by going
to him instead of waiting for him to come to you. This
Buck Sense
may involve any of half-a-dozen techniques, such as
still-hunting, horn-rattling, cruising, and various
combinations thereof. Selection of the most promising of
these methods for any given set of circumstances
demands a fair amount of knowledge of the deer. One
must be able to make at least an educated guess as to
where, when, and why it will move (or stay put, as the
case may be), and figure in weather, wind direction,
territory, effects of hunting pressure, moon, and
progress of the rut. One must then formulate a plan and
execute it skillfully enough to make it work. Obviously,
all this requires a fairly comprehensive and accurate
body of knowledge.
Such knowledge does not come out of books or
magazine articles, or even out of the mouths of hunting
companions around the campfire. Those sources are
useful, but until you put them into actual practice, they’re
little better than theories. The one and only source of
such knowledge, in a realistic form, are the deer
themselves. One has to learn about deer from deer.
One learns almost nothing, however, from dead deer.
Therefore, the only way to begin to accumulate the
necessary understanding of the animal’s ways is to
watch live bucks in the field, which means not killing
every buck one sees immediately.
There’s more to it than merely watching deer, needless
to say. Once you have observed a buck’s behavior, you
still have to interpret what you saw and arrive at some
conclusions as to what he was up to and why. Sometimes
I’ve seen the same behavior on the part of several
different deer over a period of years before it suddenly
dawned on me what I was observing. In other words,
merely gathering data cannot make you an expert deer
hunter; the mental work of sorting, comparing,
correlating, and interpreting that data is really the hard
part. At this point in the process, those books and
articles may become invaluable, since they give you the
experiences of others with which to compare your
own observations.
Over a period of time, all this will slowly begin to take
the form of meaningful opinions. One day you’ll get up
and take a look at the predawn sky and find that you
just have a conviction about how and where you ought
to hunt that morning. It won’t be something you sat
down and figured out, but an automatic printout from
your mental computer which results from all the data
you will have put into it. Your conviction cer tainly won’t
prove to be correct ever y time, but your percentage will
improve rapidly as time goes by and can actually get to
be pretty darn good with greater experience. You may
even discover that you are the “exper t” to which the
other guys in camp bring their questions.
And it all begins, oddly enough, by not shooting bucks
which you could have shot!
A secondary effect, for most of us, will be a growing
fascination with the deer and their habits as you get
to know them better. There comes a time when just
watching them is so interesting that we almost hate
to shoot one at all. Many of the very finest deer hunters
I know have this conflict in themselves, and some of
them actually kill very seldom. But when they do, the
buck is usually an outstanding trophy.
One might resolve the conflict, to some degree, by
spending a lot of time in the woods before and after the
hunting season, when there’s no question of whether or
not to kill. And, if you’re teaching a youngster to hunt,
it’s especially important to encourage him just to watch
and learn from some of the bucks he sees, to help him
avoid going through that “kill everything” phase most of
us have to conquer before we can stop being mere deer
killers and become deer hunters. – John Wootters

Custom Shop – For years, Leupold customers have
been sending us their scopes to make changes that suit
their specific needs. Perhaps it’s changing a reticle to
accommodate a change in shooting style, or shor tening
parallax to mount a scope on a rimfire rifle. Whatever
change was needed, most customers learned about this
valuable service by word of mouth.
Today, we’re proud to officially open the Leupold Custom
Shop for business. With a menu of wide-ranging services,
we can change the features of your Leupold scope to meet
your unique shooting needs.
Reticle Changes – If you’ve decided
a par ticular reticle is best for you, but your
old Leupold scope doesn’t have it, or the
