MODULE DESCRIPTOR - GEOSCIENCE

PREREQUISITES FOR MODULE

There are no pre - requisites for this teaching unit.

AIMS OF MODULE

To provide an introduction to the basic concepts in geoscience, which

should bring the student to approximately second year University
standard and provide a foundation for future geoscience / petroleum
engineering modules.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Display a basic knowledge of the Earth and geological

processes.
2. Understand the formation processes of igneous, metamorphic
and sedimentary rocks.
3. Describe the characteristics of the sedimentary environments
(fluvial, deltaic, shoreline, pelagic) and how these relate to
petroleum geology.
4. Display basic knowledge of hydrocarbon formation, reservoir
properties and traps.

09/08/00Shell Nigeria Graduate Training Programme Geoscience - 10Geo
Lecture Programme45

Earth history, plate tectonics; basic mineralogy; igneous rocks

(plutonic and volcanic); metamorphic rocks; sedimentary rocks and
environments (glacial, desert, fluvial, shoreline and deep ocean); basic
structural geology; geological mapping; introduction to petroleum
geology.

Practicals 4
Supervised Assessments 3

Direct Study 20

Private Study 31

MODE OF DELIVERY

The core part of this unit will be delivered through a series of lectures
(40 hours). This will be supported by tutorials (4 hours) and practical
classes (4 hours).

ASSESSMENT PLAN

There will be pre-test (belbin) before the teaching begins in order to

assess the starting standard of students. Throughout the course there
will be a further three equally weighted assessments, the results of
which will be collated to give a final geoscience mark. Once the
laboratory programme is in place, a mark for practical work will
contribute to the overall mark.
