TV Menus

When a USB drive is connected to the

set, a menu will appear displaying the
device if it is recognized by the set. If the
menu does not appear when the USB is
inserted, the USB drive is not compatible
with the set.

When the Menu button is pressed on the

set or the remote, this is the menu that
will appear. To proceed to the main menu
press the right cursor key on the remote.

Refer to figure 1 to view a composite of

the customer menu.

To perform all of the functions

on the set and to have access to
the service modes, the original
remote or one used in this
design type must be used.

After pressing the right cursor but-
ton on the remote, the main menu
will appear.

A full explanation of all of the menu

settings are available in the DFU
found on the customer website at
www.p4c.philips.com.

If a customer complains of the

picture being clipped, they may
need to select a different picture
format. Broadcast stations when
upconverting from NTSC to
Digital, may transmit black bars
on the sides to maintain a 4x3
aspect ratio on a 16x9 screen.
The Automatic mode will detect
these bars to fill out the picture.
Clipping on the top and bottom of
the picture may occur in this
mode. If the station is broadcast-

ing something other than black bars (grey for

example), the set will not detect the bars and fill
out the picture.

Ambilights are available on some of the LCD ver-

sion of the EJ3.0. The Ambilight assemblies are
mounted in the rear cover of the set. They use
LEDs instead of the fluorescent lamps used in
past versions. The driver circuits are mounted in
each light assembly. They are powered by a 12
volt supply from the
2
power supply and are
controlled by the I C Bus from the SSB.

EJ3.0 LCD Version (Figure 2)

The LCD version has a single power supply , SSB, and Ambilight Interconnect panels. There
is not service information or parts available for the power supply panel. It is designed for
replacement only in service.

Board level troubleshooting for EJ3.0 LA, LCD version Figure 3

In the standby mode, two voltages are present on 1J02 on the SSB. The 5 volt standby
voltage on pins 4 and 5 and the Standby (STBY) voltage on pin 11. When the set is turned
On, the STBY line should go Low. This will switch On the main power supply voltages. The
12VS supply can be read on pins 9 and 10 and the -18 and +18 volt supplies can be read on
pins 1 and 2 with the set On. The plus and minus 18 volt supplies are the audio amplifier
supply voltages. The Audio Amplifier is located on the SSB.

If the STBY line does not go Low, check the Keyboard line on pin 2 of 1M01. This voltage
should go Low when the power button is pressed.

The Power Supply also produces a 24 volt supply for the backlight inverters on the LCD
panel. The DIM CTL voltage from the SSB controls the brightness of the backlight. It can be
measured on pin 12 of 1J02. The command to switch on the backlight is the LAMP ON sig-
nal which can be measured on pin 13 of 1J02.

page 7
FIGURE 2 - LCD BACK VIEW

The audio amplifier is located on the SSB. Speakers are connected on 1740 of the SSB. A
problem in the audio amplifier causing a DC voltage on the speaker lines will cause the set to
shut down. This will generate a error code 14. To troubleshoot, disconnect the wires from
pins 1 and 2 of 1J02 of the SSB to remove power to the audio amplifier. If the set runs,
check to see if the voltages on the power supply are correct. If they are correct, change the
SSB.

The Ambilight interconnect board is present even if the set does not have the Ambilight fea-
ture. The LVDS signal from the SSB is fed to the Interconnect board which performs video
enhancement.

The Ambilight is controlled by the I2C bus from the SSB. This I2C bus controls the video
enhancement IC located on the Ambilight board.

SSB and Ambilight indicators

The bottom LED on the SSB (top picture) indicates that the viper IC has booted. The top
LED indicates that 12 volts is present for the display. This voltage not only powers the dis-
play, but also powers the video enhancement IC on the Ambilight board.

The Ambilight interconnect is shown in the bottom picture. The LED on the right shows that
the 12 volt display voltage from the SSB is present. The left LED indicates that the 12 volts
to the controller board is present. If the picture is not present and backlight is On, check for
the 12 volt supply to the LCD panel controller board. Then check for the LVDS signals on the
LVDS connector to the controller board. If not present, check for the LVDS signals from the
SSB.

page 10
LCD Panel backlight troubleshooting

As indicated when looking at the wiring interconnect, there are three voltages to switch on the
backlight drive, 24 volts, 3 volt power on, and 1.7 to 3 volts dim control. The dim control volt-
age is normally around 3 volts when the screen is at normal brightness.

There is a Master inverter and Slave inverter board. The Master inverter board generates the
control signals for the lamp drive circuits. If the backlight or the Master or Slave drive is not
working the drive on both boards will shut down. An LED on the Master inverter board will
turn On for approximately 4 seconds after the B+ and control voltages are fed to the board.
This indicates that the controller IC on the board is working. If the backlight does not turn On,
check the output of both boards as the set is turned
On to see if the drive signal is present. If one of
the signals is not present, change that board. If both
drive signals are present, the panel backlight is
defective.

page 11
Plasma panel

The area highlighted is the chassis part covered by the EJ3.0 PA service manual. Except for
the Side Jack panel, IR board and Keyboard, the rest of the set is covered by the SDI PDP

repair manual.

Board Level troubleshooting

In the standby mode, the only voltages present is the +5V2_STBY and the STBY line is High.
When the set is turned On, the STBY line goes Low. If the 5 volt standby is present and the
STBY does not go Low, there is a problem with the SSB. When the set turns On, the +12VS
supply on the power supply turns On. This voltage can be checked on pin 10 of 1J02.

After the set turns On, The +17 volt and -17 volt supplies then switch On, supplying power to
the audio amplifier on the SSB. A problem with the audio amplifier may cause a protection
error (red blinking LED) code 14. If this occurs, unplug either 1M02 or CN8013 and recycle
power to the set. If the set then turns On, check the plus and minus 17 volts on CN8013 on
the Power Supply panel. If those voltages are present, replace the SSB. Read the Audio
Amplifier section for a complete circuit description.

On the plasma panel, the VG voltage (15.5 volts), D5V and 3V3 voltages switch On. The
Relay On voltage switches the Logic Board On. When the Logic board turns On, the board
then switches the VS-ON voltage High (3.2V). This switches the VS voltages on the Power
Supply. The VS voltage supplies power to the X and Y driver boards.

PANEL

page 13
Operating the Plasma panel in a stand-alone mode

One way to determine if the problem is on the Chassis part or the Panel part is to place the
Panel in a Stand-Alone mode. The panel with the SSB and Ambilight interconnect boards
needs to be removed to give access to the Logic board.

Disconnecting CN8015 and CN8014 with switch on the panel power supply in most cases. If
the power supply does not switch On, ground pin 4 of CN8015 of the power supply.

To switch on the panel test pattern

Place jumper CN2013 (pins 3 and 4) on the Logic

Board. The display will start showing a cycle of
different patterns.

To display a white pattern, at the moment the “full

white” pattern is visible, remove the jumper. Now the
display will show a continuous full white pattern.
To restart the cycle of different patterns, replace the
jumper.

If the pattern appears, this confirms that the panel is

working. The only part un-tested on the panel is the

LVDS input. This will need to be

checked with a scope after
reinstalling the SSB and Ambilight
interconnect board.

page 14
If the white screen does not turn On, check the drive signal to the panel. The Y-Drive signal
can be checked on the Y-Buffer panel. The test point is shown in the picture below. The top
waveform is the Y-Drive signal. It is approximately 1200 volts p-p. The bottom waveform is
the V-Togg signal which is the sync signal for the scope. This signal is found on the Logic
board.

The waveform to the right is

the X-Drive signal.

If either Y-Drive and X-

Drive signals are not pre-
sent, no picture will be dis-
played. If both waveforms
are present, and there is no
picture on the screen, the
Logic board should be
changed.

page 15
Video Signal Flow Figure 5

The SSB tuner tunes both NTSC and ATSC channels. On the ATSC side, both terrestrial
8VSB and unscrambled Cable QAM signals are tuned. The Tuner is powered by the
+5VTUN voltage which is derived from the +12SW voltage.

If the selected channel is analog, IF is output on Pin 12 to 1A10, Saw Filter, and then to
7C00. IC 7A00 has the Video IF Demodulator. Composite video is output on Pin 120 and
then sent to an internal AV switch via Pin 123. The AV switch selects between the composite
video from the tuner or from one of the AV inputs. The selected composite video or YC is fed
to one of two A/D converters. This signal is not broken into components as is done in a digi-
tal transmission. The signal is converted from analog to digital as is. If the signal is YC, it is
output on DLINK1. Composite video is output on DLINK3. The signal is fed to IC 7J00, AVIP.
If the signal is from a YC source, it is fed to a multiplexer and output on DV3. If the signal is
composite video, it is fed to the internal Columbus circuit. The Columbus is a 3D digital comb
filter. The 3D comb processes the whole frame instead of two lines at a time as in previous
comb filters. This results in a sharper picture without cross luminance or cross color.

The AVIP converts the video to a YUV format. It is then output on the DV3 data line to 7V00,
Viper.

The YUV video is fed to a Switch and video processor in the Viper which rescales the video
to fit the screen. A memory controller interfaces with two SDRAM ICs 7V01 and 7V02 which
stores the video frames as they are being processed. In the case of LCD and Plasma sets,
the video is converted to a progressive scan format. In the case where this SSB is used in a
PTV, the video is converted to a 1080i format. The video is fed to the video output circuit
which outputs the signal on 3, 8 bit data lines to the AVIP. An LVDS transmitter in the AVIP
outputs the signal to the LCD or Plasma panel in an LVDS format. The OSD is added to the
picture in the Viper.

Component video signals, 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i are fed to 7B11, HDMI processor.
This IC performs a A/D conversion before feeding the signal to the AVIP on the DV4 and DV5
data lines. The HDMI signal is also fed to this IC which separates the video part of the data
before feeding it to the AVIP on DV4 and DV5.

If the customer selects an ATSC channel, the ATSC IF signal is output from the tuner on Pins
14 and 15. The signal is fed to a 44 Mhz SAW filter 1T01 and IF amplifier 7T13. The signal
is then fed to the ATSC decoder 7T22. The ATSC decoder captures the compressed data
stream and outputs it on a 8 bit data line, DVIF. This signal is then fed to the Viper for pro-
cessing. The Viper then rescales the video to fit the screen.

Audio Signal Flow (Figure 6)

All of the audio processing including the amplifier is located on the SSB. The amplifier is a
class D with an output of 15 watts per channel.

If the customer has selected an analog channel, the 4.5 Mhz sound carrier is included with
the video IF output on Pin 12 of the Tuner. The IF is fed to 7C00, MPIF, and to the Video
Demodulator and Audio Demodulator. The baseband audio is fed to an A/D converter and to
Data Link 3. AV inputs are fed to a switch located in 7C00 and then to one of two A/D
converters. The audio is then output on Data Link 1 or Data Link 2.

The audio is separated in the AVIP and fed to the Audio processor. The audio processor
performs the following functions:

Master Volume control and Balance

5 band equalizer
Virtual Dolby processing
Stereo processing
Headphone volume

2
Processed audio is output in a I S format and fed to the Viper. The Viper performs an Audio
Delay based on preset levels in the software. The audio is then fed back to the AVIP where
the selected signal is fed to a D/A converter and fed to the headphone amplifier and audio
amplifier.

If the customer has selected an ATSC channel, the audio data is encoded in the data stream
which is fed to the Viper from the ATSC decoder. The selected data streams are decoded in
the MPEG2 processor and fed to the Audio Delay circuit. The I2S audio is then fed to the
AVIP where it is processed and fed to the main audio and headphone amplifiers. The main
audio is output from the Viper on AB29 to the digital output jack labeled SPDIF.

When the customer selects the HDMI input, the HDMI receiver removes the digital audio from
the data stream and outputs it to the Viper in a I2S format.

Audio Amplifier and Protection (Figure 7)

Audio Amplifier (Figure 7A)

The Audio Amplifier is located on a separate board from the SSB. The amplifier is the same
design as the one in the EL1.1 and EBJ1.0 chassis.

The audio amplifier consists of two class D 15 watt amplifiers. The amplifiers are powered by
a +17 and -17 power supplies supplied by the Sub Power Supply on the Plasma version and
the Power Supply board on the LCD version. Since the right amplifier is identical, only the
left amplifier is shown.

Audio from the AVIP on the SSB is fed to Pin 3 of 7D00-1 which is a comparator. Feedback
from the output is filtered and wave-shaped by an RC network which generates a saw wave.
The sawtooth waveform is applied to Pin 2. When the audio input equals the voltage on the
saw wave ramp, Pin 1 will go High. This feeds the drivers, 7D06, 7D07, 7D08, and 7D09.
They then drive the outputs in 7D10. During muting, the Mute line goes High turning 7D05
On forcing 7D10 into saturation, blocking the drive signal.

The base and emitter of Transistor 7D12 is connected to Resistor 3D17. When the current
reaches the point where the base is 0.6 volts less than the emitter, the Transistor will turn On.
This overcurrent condition will switch the CPROT line High causing the set to shut down.

Audio Protection (Figure 7B)

The audio circuits are protected against DC voltage on the outputs and overcurrent in the
amplifier.

If a DC voltage appears on the speaker lines, positive or negative, the op-amps of 7DF7 will
switch On causing Pin 7 or 1 to go Low. This will cause Transistor 7DF3 to turn Off causing
the Audio_Port to go High. Transistor 7DF4 will turn On, latching the circuit. the High on the
Audio_Prot line will cause the processor to shut the set down. When this circuit latches, it will
stay latched until power is removed from the set.

A High on the CPROT line will turn Transistor 7DF0 On, turning 7DF11 Off. This will turn On
7DF7 causing a shutdown latch as described above. As discussed before, the CPROT line
will go High if there is an overcurrent in either the left or right audio amplifiers.

Service Alignment Mode

The following lists some of the SAM highlights. Refer to Figure 12 to view the SAM menu
map.

The service alignment mode allows the service technician to check errors, clear errors,
change options, read operation hours and perform alignments. (Figure 8) The SAM proce-
dure should never be given to the
customer as changes could be
made which could make the set
inoperable. To enter SAM, press
0 6 2 5 9 6 Info on the remote
control. A customer warning will
then appear on the screen. The
channel or AV input can be
changed while in this screen. FIGURE 8
After the Next button has been
pressed, no changes to the input
can be made. Press the Red but-
ton on the remote to continue.
The remote must be from a EJ,
BJ, BPBL, or EM1.1 type chassis.

Press the cursor down or cursor

up buttons on the remote to select
the item in the menu. The top
line indicates the menu or sub
menu.
General and whitepoint alignments
can be made while in the SAM. FIGURE 9
Figure 10 shows the personal
options menu. The Virgin mode
can be selected in this menu
which puts the set in a new out of
the box condition.

Feature options can be set individ-

ually or by changing the option
numbers. Changing the options
will change the option numbers.

To change the option numbers,

select option numbers in the
menu, then cursor right. FIGURE 10

page 24
Enter the Option number. (Figure
11) After entering the last number,
the numbers will be set. If the
numbers are changed without
entering the last number, press the
OK button on the remote after
entering all of the changes. If the
numbers are entered and the cur-
sor is shifted to the Group selec-
tion, the number will revert to the
previous number set. A label on
the chassis of each set lists the
correct Option Codes. If the
FIGURE 11
option numbers have been
changed or the SSB has been replaced, the option numbers should be changed to match the
option code label.

A screen diversity code is also shown on this label. If the option code has been changed, the
screen diversity code should be correct. Selection of a different screen diversity code will
change the option code.

Note: The Option Code on the label is

the one loaded at the factory
when the set is shipped.
Entering this code will place the
set in the out of box (Virgin)
mode when the set is turned Off
and back On. Any changes in
customer setting will cause the
Option Code to change. For
example, after entering the
Option Code on the label, the
set will be in the Virgin (out of
box) mode. After auto-program-
ming the channels, the Option
Code will change. The Option
Code should only be entered
if the SSB has been changed or
if someone has entered the
wrong code.

Changing the screen diversity code to one that is not compatible with the screen may cause a
blank screen. In this case the correct screen diversity code can be entered by pressing 0 6 2
5 9 8 menu followed by the 3 digit screen diversity code. The set will then shut Off. The
correct screen diversity code will be loaded when the set is turned On.
page 25
After making any changes in the SAM, cursor left to the main SAM menu and select Store
and press OK.

For the SAM menu map, refer to Figure 12.

As already indicated, errors can be read using the Service Alignment Mode. There are also
protection errors which will cause the set to go into a protection shutdown mode which is
indicated by a blinking red light on the set. If Protection + Error blinking as shown on the
error code chart shown below, the error can be read by counting the blinks. The first digit is
indicated by a slow blink. If the error is greater than 9, the second digit is indicated by a fast
blink.

If not picture is present, but the set is working the errors can be read by the CSM (Customer

The Customer Service Mode is a read only mode which can be used by the service techni-
cian or a Call Center agent to read error codes and some set settings. To activate CSM,
enter 1 2 3 6 5 4 on the remote.

If the set is not displaying a picture, but does turn On, error codes can be read by inserting
