Author’s Guide to

PROFITABLE PUBLISHING

www.frontlist.com
Welcome and congratulations!

You’ve worked long and hard to finish your manuscript, and now
it’s time to turn it into a published book. However, if you are like 85% of self-
published authors who use paid publishing services every year, you don’t
want to just publish your book for an audience of friends and relatives.
You want your book to sell!
You have probably already discounted the traditional publishing route. Most publishers will only consider
manuscripts forwarded by literary agents, and typical agencies receive over 5,000 submissions every
year—from which they accept fewer than a dozen new clients (a 99.8% rejection rate!).
You might have even tried the route of “free” publishing services, which, given that you do the layout
work yourself, will print your book and list it with distributors. But, as you have probably already
discovered, books produced in this fashion don’t sell many copies. Since these online services are highly
automated in nature, they lack the dedicated personnel required to guide and support authors in their
book promotion efforts.

If your ultimate goal is to sell books, you have to generate demand for your title;
and in this area, no other publishing service is better set up to help you succeed
than FrontList Publishing. Let us show you how!

Now the good news: even if you don’t know the first thing about book promotion, we will show you how
the skills that successful authors use to sell books can be learned and applied with great results by any self-
published author like yourself, provided that a) you are passionate about your book, b) you are taught what
works and what doesn’t work so that you avoid making costly mistakes, and c) you are continuously guided
and supported by book promotion experts whose job is to help you generate demand for your title.
With Frontlist Publishing, all you have to do is supply the passion and we will take care of the expertise and
the ongoing support. Not only will you learn the skills that are required to become a successful promoter,
but our professional book promotion experts will also mentor you, teach you new “tricks of the trade” so
that you can get better results, and help you stay focused. In addition, to make sure that your manuscript
is well taken care of, we will put at your disposal our extensive suite of publishing, editing, and book-
development services—all specifically created to help you increase your book’s market appeal.
In essence, you will receive the same kind of end-to-end support offered to mainstream authors by
traditional publishers with a few important differences. Frontlist Publishing allows you to:

• retain 100% of the rights to your work, including film, TV, and translation rights,
• retain creative control over your project; you get to decide how you want the cover and
interior of your book to look,
• sign a non-exclusive publishing agreement; in other words, you are free to switch to
another publisher at any time should an offer come your way.

We are committed to your success

Once your manuscript is ready for produc tion, you will be assigned
a dedicated Book Promotion Manager who will work with you hand-in-hand
to help you develop a book promotion plan that:
1. suits your book genre (e.g. how-to books are promoted differently than novels),
2. adapts best to your style (e.g. you may prefer newspaper interviews over TV appearances),
3. maximizes results regardless of how much or how little you are able to allocate to your
promotion budget (e.g. if cost is the constraint, we will show you what needs to be done and
teach you how to do the work yourself; if time is the constraint, then we will do some of the
work on your behalf to free you up for other promotional activities).
Our book promotion program is backed by the most advanced suite of marketing services in the self-
publishing industry, designed to generate demand for your title. These affordably priced services cover
all key areas of book promotion, such as radio, TV, and print media, online marketing, book reviews,
corporate sales, speaking engagements, print advertising, search advertising, and trade-show promotion,
among many others. We are continuously working to evolve and expand our offering to provide you with
even more cost-effective ways to reach your target audience. Our goal is to help you increase your book
sales while decreasing your marketing cost per book.

We don’t just give you advice, we actually COACH you to succeed.

A well thought-out and executed book promotion plan will generate book sales. But, execution requires
discipline, knowledge, and continued support. Doing everything on your own—even when armed with a
good plan—isn’t nearly as effective as having the constant support of a team of book promotion experts and
trainers. This is precisely what Frontlist Publishing provides its authors, and how we differentiate ourselves from
our competition. We believe that to give you the best chance to succeed in generating demand for your book,
we must be 100% committed to supporting you every step of the way—after all, that’s the job of a publisher!

Profitable Publishing will

Seven steps to profitable publishing

At Front Li s t, we wi ll groom your manuscrip t into a professionally

formatted book with an attractive cover that will stand up to the quality of
traditionally-published books. We will then guide you through the creation and
execution of a book promotion plan designed to generate demand for your title.
The steps below describe our easy to follow process from beginning to end.

STEP 1: Identify the services that best address your publishing needs.
On pages 12-14 you will find a breakdown of our publishing services followed by our order form and
publishing agreement (pages 15-20). Our publishing consultants are available by phone or email to help
you identify the service that best fits your book project and to help you complete the sign up documents.

STEP 2: Complete your order form and sign your publishing agreement.
After we receive your signed copy of the agreement along with payment, you will be assigned an Author
Account Manager, who will manage every detail of your book while it goes through our publishing
process. Your author account manager will be your internal champion at Frontlist, contacting you
whenever we need additional information or book materials, resolving any unexpected issues that may
arise during the publishing process, and ensuring that the production of your book stays on track.

STEP 3: Submit your book materials.

As soon as you identify the services you need, your publishing consultant will email you a Manuscript
Submission Checklist. This document will show you how to submit your book materials (text,
photographs, illustrations, etc.) so that the publishing process goes as smoothly as possible. Your author
account manager will gladly assist you with any questions you may have about our submission guidelines.

t h e au t h o r ’ s g u i d e t o p r o f i ta b l e p u b l i s h i n g 9
STEP 4: Discuss your book vision with your author account manager.
Once we receive your book materials, your author account manager will set up a meeting with you to
discuss your ideas about how you want the cover and interior of your book to look. Once your vision is
clearly defined, your author account manager will forward your materials to our book-design team, who
will layout the book based on your vision.

STEP 5: Develop your book promotion plan.

As soon as your manuscript is submitted to our design team, it is time to set the wheels in motion for
the key stage of your publishing journey: the promotion of your book. The reason this work must be
performed in parallel with book design, is that good planning takes time and you don’t want to leave this
critical task to the last minute (as many authors do, unfortunately). Also, there are other considerations; for
instance, many book reviewers will not read books once they are past their publication date.
Your author account manager will now introduce you to your most important partner at Frontlist—your
Book Promotion Manager. With the assistance of BookSuccess, our ground-breaking book promotion
coaching program, you will develop together the best strategy for marketing and promoting your title.

STEP 6: Do a full review, make final changes, and sign off your proof.
Once the layout of your book is completed, your author account manager will send you a proof for your
review. At this stage you may go through one or more rounds of revisions. Once you are happy with your
proof, you will then sign it off. This is the green light for our production team to make your book available
to our distribution channels and to print the free copies that are included in your publishing package. At
this stage, you may also purchase copies for your own use at discounted author prices.

STEP 7: Put your book promotion plan into action.

Now, you are ready to “hit the road” and begin to actively promote your book! With the help of our
BookSuccess coaching program, you will have the plan, the knowledge, the support, and the discipline
required to generate demand for your title and achieve the ultimate goal—book sales!

WE PROVIDE YOU a level of support matched only by traditional publishers

The advantage of working with a publishing house is the “all-encompassing” approach they take with
their titles. When new authors are signed on, they are assigned a team of experts who manage their
entire project, including editing, proofreading, book and cover design, book production, printing,
distribution, book promotion and sales. In order to increase your chances of success, we realized that
the best way for you to compete fairly with mainstream authors is to benefit from the same approach
used by their publishers to back them.

we have created an affordable alternative to equip independent authors like you

with the right combination of skills, expert support, and continuous guidance
required to get results that count. We have also implemented the most generous
royalty structure in the self-publishing industry, so that you can keep more of the
proceeds from your book sales.

Let us partner with you to achieve your publishing dream!

PUBLISHING AGREEMENT
1. PARTIES
This is a Publishing Agreement (“Agreement”) between the author (“Author”) as shown at the end of this agreement, and FrontList
Publishing (“Publisher”), a division of BlitzPrint Inc., with its principal offices at 1235 64th Avenue SE, Suite 1, Calgary, AB, Canada T2H 2J7,
for the work whose title is shown in the Author Information section of the Publishing Order Form, on page 15 of this guide (“Work”).

2. NON-EXCLUSIVITY AND LICENSING RIGHTS

The Author grants the Publisher the non-exclusive worldwide license to publish, store, transmit, print, distribute, and sell the
Work in print as well as electronic (eBook) formats. This license can be revoked at any time as stipulated in the Termination clause
of this Agreement (Section 9). The Author retains all rights of ownership to the Work throughout this Agreement. The Author
also grants to the Publisher permission to exhibit elements of the Work including, but not limited, to excerpts, title information,
Author’s biographical information, and description of the Work, on the Publisher’s web site and to share them with third party
retailers and other affiliated web sites for the purposes of promoting and facilitating sales of the Work.

3. ROYALTIES AND RETAIL PRICING

On all commercial sales of the Work, the Publisher will pay the Author a royalty as described in the following section:

Maximum Royalty
Trade Discount
Trade Channel to Market (as a percentage of the
Required by Channel suggested retail price)

Book Wholesalers (e.g. Ingram, Baker & Taylor) 55% 10%

Book Retailers (e.g. brick-and-mortar bookstores) 40% 25%

Amazon.com 35%1 30%1

Note 1: These rates apply to paperback black and white and color books only. Hardcover books are listed on Amazon.com at the
standard wholesaler trade discount and royalty rate of 55% and 10% respectively.

3.1. SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE (SRP)
The suggested retail price (SRP) is a guideline set by the Publisher based on the book’s page count, the book type (black & white
or color) and the book binding (paperback, hardcover, or saddle-stitch). The Author is free to keep this price, or to choose a
retail price that is higher or lower than the suggested price, depending on what the market for the book’s genre will bear2. For
example, a 200-page 6x9 paperback has a suggested retail price of $15.95. If the Author chooses to keep this price, then the
Publisher will pay royalties of $1.60 (10%), $3.99 (%25), $4.79 (30%), and $8.77 (55%) respectively for each trade channel. If the
book is a business title, a category that generally commands a higher retail price, then re-pricing the book to, say $20.95, will
generate royalties of $2.10, $5.24, $6.29, and $11.52 respectively. When choosing a retail price that goes below the suggested
price, then the royalty rates will be reduced in proportion to the price reduction. The lowest possible retail price that the Author
can choose is that which brings the royalty rates to zero percent (break-even point).
Note 2: Large booksellers often discount book prices in order to attract buyers. For example, a novel listed by the Author on the
Amazon.com web site at $14.95 may actually be offered for sale at $9.95 (a 33% discount). These sales incentives are absorbed by the
bookseller and have no impact on the Author’s royalty payments, which are based on the original retail price set by the Author.

3.2. FLEXIBLE PRICING ADVANTAGE

As a strategic advantage that is unique in the self-publishing industry, the Publisher allows the Author to set a different retail
price for each individual trade channel, thus enabling deeper discounts in sales channels that have a higher royalty percentage3.
For instance, a paperback book that can’t sell profitably for less than, say $12.49, when sold through a wholesaler that demands
a 55% trade discount, may be sold profitably on Amazon.com for $9.99 since it only requires a trade discount of 35%. This feature
is particularly advantageous for price-competitive mass market genres such as fiction.
Note 3: The retail price that the Author chooses for sales of the Work through the Publisher’s online bookstore cannot be lower that
the lowest retail price offered through the Publisher’s trade channels to market. This is a requirement imposed on the Publisher by
its trade channels to ensure that booksellers are not selling the Author’s Work at a price disadvantage.

3.3. AUTHOR COPIES AND FREE COPIES

The Author will be able to purchase books at a discount of 55% off the suggested retail price set by the Publisher, with further
discounts available through volume purchases. Shipping and handling costs are not included in the cost of books sold directly
to the Author and will be charged separately by the Publisher. Color publishing packages include free books up to 32 pages in
size. Free color books of a larger page count will have a surcharge based on the total number of pages. No royalties accrue from
Author purchases or from the free copies included in the Author’s publishing package.

3.4. ROYALTY PAYMENT

The Publisher will remit payments to the Author for any royalties that might accumulate during each fiscal quarter (Oct-Dec, Jan-
Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep) 30 days after the quarter’s end. If the royalty payment due in a single quarter is less than $25, the balance will
be applied to the next fiscal quarter until the royalty payment exceeds this amount. Should changes in market conditions result in
an increase in printing costs, the Author’s royalties may need to be reduced to compensate for the increase. If this situation arises,
the Author will have the choice to increase the retail price of the book in order to bring the royalties back their original level.

4. PUBLICATION
In order to begin performing publishing services, the Publisher will receive from the Author the present Agreement signed and
dated, a completed Publishing Order Form, and payment for selected services. The Author will submit the Work and associated
components in a format that complies with our Submission Guidelines. There may be additional charges applied for submissions that
deviate significantly from our guidelines, although the Author will be given every opportunity to resubmit the Work in compliance
to avoid such charges. The Publisher reserves the right, in its sole discretion, not to accept a submission upon receipt.

4.1. PROVISION FOR HIGHLY COMPLEX LAYOUTS

All publishing packages offered by the Publisher include the layout of Works that contain a reasonable number of design
complexities. Examples of design complexities include footnotes, endnotes, special graphic elements, callouts, drop caps, glyphs,
text tables, charts, mathematical or scientific formulae, or any other kind of special formatting. For Works that contain a high level
of complexities, the Publisher will first assess the Work as soon as it is submitted by the Author and then it will provide a quote to
the Author for any extra billing that might be required in order to proceed with the layout. In all cases, the Author will be given
the final choice as to how to proceed before any extra work is billed.

4.2. PROOFING STAGE

Upon completion of the book’s layout, the Publisher will supply the Author with an electronic proof of the Work (pdf file). The Author
shall make every effort to review the proof expeditiously. Should the Author fail to provide the Publisher with a revised proof, or sign
off the Work, after 120 days from receipt of the proof file, the Publisher reserves the right to consider the Work contractually completed
and terminate this Agreement. In this circumstance, the Publisher shall not be required to refund any submission payments to the
Author. The purchase of a publishing package entitles the Author to one proofing round (Friends & Family and Fast Forward packages)
or two proofing rounds (Frontlist Bronze, Silver, and Gold) free of charge4. A per-round charge applies to additional proofing rounds.
Note 4: Each proofing round includes up to 2 hours of technician’s time to enter corrections into the Work. If the number of
corrections is substantial and more than 2 hours is required to enter them, then extra hourly charges will apply.

4.3. PRODUCTION FILES

The Publisher retains ownership of all book-production files that it creates in the course of publishing the Work. After twelve
months have elapsed, counting from the time that the Author signs off the Work’s proof, the Author may request copies of the
