Definition: “Architect”

An architect is a person trained in the planning, design and


oversight of the construction of buildings, who practices architecture.
To practice architecture means to offer or render services in
connection with the design and construction of a building, or group of
buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings that
have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use.

Professionally, an architect's decisions affect public safety, and


thus an architect must undergo specialized training consisting of
advanced education and/or internship for practical experience to earn
a license to practice architecture.

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Consult with concerned professionals about the design of


an environment
• Prepare and present feasibility reports and design
proposals to the client
• Advise client on the practicality of their project
• Assist in site selection
• Provide support to IT in design and project management,
specifically using software packages such as Computer
Aided Design (CAD)
• Adhere to financial budgets and deadlines
• Produce detailed workings, drawings and specifications
• Specify & ensure the nature and quality of materials
required

SELECTION PROCESS

There are in all 4 main rounds of interview conducted -

• Releasing an Advertisement or requirement for the position

• Interested candidates will revert with their current work and the
plan layout required working on the new position

• Shortlisted candidates are called for a Technical test to check


the feasibility of the plan submitted

• Post clearing the technical test, shortlisted candidates have to


go through a formal interview with the Head of the Technical
and Engineering team

• Final round is with HR to check with if the candidate meets the


Organisation requirement and is culture fit and as per the
organisation standards

• Reference check is prerequisite and failing which the offer


stands withdrawn

SELECTION PROCESS

The interview process of the candidate (Architect) is taken up as


follows:

1. A preliminary round to examine the candidate's documents and


antecedents is conducted by HR. The focus is only to make sure that
all relevant documentation is in place, however any questions relating
to the architects work or experience would be asked by the Line and
Senior Manager.

The architect’s credentials generally comprise the following:


• Degree / Diploma certificates
• Additional qualifications
• Proficiency in handling design tools
• Recognitions, citations & awards
• Any recognition in extracurricular activities, special talents
• Work experience & list of clients, works & experience of
handling people
• Any courses or study in self development activities that may
have bearing on his work
• Portfolio drawings of past work done along with presentation of
special feature of the work where the architect can showcase
his special aptitudes.

• Application form / letter
• CV / Resume along with relevant photographs as may be
required by the organisation.

2. Second round is followed up by a Senior Manager or Director.


This is generally for short listing of suitable candidates at this stage.

3. Third round could take place again with the above Senior Manager
or Director along with the Chairman, MD and/or Owner for the final
selection. Depending on the seniority of the appointment as well as
the complexity involved in processing the candidature, the above
different processes could happen on the same day, or even spread
out over a period of time as per the convenience of all concerned, or
as required by the priority of the appointment.

4. Offer discussion and joining formalities are completed

Limitations
1. No assessment device / tool is used to screen the candidate for this
role i.e. paper pencil test, Psychometric test, Situational tests, role
plays or managerial games etc.
2. Case study based interviews / tests are not conducted to indentify
the skill level.
3. More emphasizes on past records/work/project
4. Difficult to find dedicated/fulltime Architect for an organization as
most of them prefer to do freelancing.
5. Police verification is also absent.
6. Reference check is not conducted.

Synopsis
Simple selection process is followed in most of the organization
comprising of 2-3 rounds of interviews. The job specification is more
or less the same in all the organisations. Job description too is mostly
common in all the organisations where the architect needs to prepare
information about the design, materials, estimated costs, consulting
with clients and planning layout of the project. So even though the
company profile might be different, the basic skill sets to perform a
task for an architect remains the same.
