Presentation Quality assurance - environment

Certified quality: ISO 9001

MT20066

A major asset
In each of its units, Schneider Electric integrates a functional organization
whose main role is to check quality and monitor compliance with standards.
This procedure is:
b uniform throughout all departments;
b recognized by many customers and approved organizations.
But above all, it is its strict application that has allowed us to obtain
the recognition of an independent organization:
The French Quality Assurance Association (AFAQ).
The quality system for the design and manufacture of MCset
is certified to be in conformity with the requirements
of ISO 9001 : 2000 quality assurance standards.

Strict and systematic checks

During manufacture, each MCset functional unit is subject to systematic
MT20067

routine testing with the aim of checking the quality and conformity
of the following features:
v measuring of opening and closing speeds;
v measuring of operating torque;
v dielectric test;
v testing of safety systems and interlocks;
v testing of low voltage components;
v conformity with drawings and diagrams.
The results obtained are recorded and approved by the quality control
department on each device’s test certificate.
MT20068

This therefore guarantees product traceability.

b Control of vacuum interrupters

Each vacuum interrupter, sealed and airtight, is checked for the quality of
the vacuum obtained. This pressure measurement is based on the proven
"magnetron discharge" method.
Using this sophisticated procedure, measurement is very precise and does
not require access to the inside of the bulb, thus not affecting the airtight seal.

Protected environment
In order to help you protect the environment and to relieve you of any
MT20069FR

concerns about storing or dismantling this equipment, Schneider Electric

Services offers to recover your equipment at the end of its life.
MCset has been designed with environmental protection in mind:
the materials used, insulators and conductors are identified,
easily separable and recyclable.
Production sites are certified to ISO 14000.

Make up of an MCset switchboard

MCset switchboards are made up of several interconnected functional units.
Power connections are made between functional units within a switchboard via
a single busbar.
The electrical continuity of all metal frames is provided by the connection of each
functional unit’s earthing busbar to the switchboard’s main earthing circuit.
Low voltage wiring trays are provided in the switchboard above the low voltage
control cabinets.
LV cables can enter the switchboard through the top or bottom of each functional unit.

Description of a functional unit

A functional unit comprises all equipment in the main and auxiliary circuits
which together provide a protection function. Each functional unit combines
all the components which are required to fulfil this function:
b the cubicle;
b the protection, monitoring and control system;
b the withdrawable part.

The cubicle
The cubicle is of LSC2B (Loss of Service Continuity Category) type as defined by
IEC standard 62271-200, in other words the medium voltage parts are
compartmented using metal partitions (PM class) which are connected to earth and
which separate:
b the busbars;
b the withdrawable part (circuit-breaker, fuse-contactor, disconnector truck or
earthing truck);
b MV connections, earthing switch, current sensors and voltage transformers as
required.
MCset guarantees a high level of protection of people; when a compartment
containing a main circuit is open, the other compartments and/or functional units may
remain energised.
The low voltage auxiliaries and monitoring unit are in a control cabinet separated
from the medium voltage section.
Four basic cubicle layouts are offered:
b incomer or feeder AD
b line up bussection CL - GL
b busbar metering and earthing TT
b switch-fuse feeder DI
AD and CL cubicles have withdrawable vacuum type circuit-breaker and contactor
switchgear.

The protection, monitoring and control system

This includes:
b Sepam, protection, monitoring and control unit;
b current sensors, which may be of 3 types:
v conventional current transformers,
v low voltage toroid type current transformers,
v CSP type broad-range current transformers.
b voltage transformers;
b zero sequence core balance current transformers (CSH type).

The withdrawable part

This includes:
b the circuit-breaker, contactor or the earthing truck with its closing and opening
mechanism, or the disconnector truck;
b the lever-type propulsion mechanism for racking in-out;
b interlocks to fix the withdrawable part on the fixed part either in service position
or disconnected.

MCset range Protection of people 0

MCset internal arc

Internal arc version: MCset is designed to withstand and protect operators
in the case of failure due to an internal arc.
MT20076

MCset has been successfully tested using type tests.

MCset proposes several options to install an internal arc switchboard.
b 3-sided internal arc protection
For an MCset switchboard fitted against a wall, access to the rear of the cubicle
is impossible. Internal arc protection on 3 sides is sufficient.
b 4-sided internal arc protection
In the case of an MCset switchboard installed in the middle of a room, internal arc
protection on 4 sides is necessary in order to protect an operator who goes behind
the cubicle.
b Installation in a room with limited ceiling height
v ceiling height over 2.8 meters, it is possible to install a tunnel in order to avoid
hot gas to be reflected by the ceiling.
b Internal arcing detector
MCset switchboard with tunnel MCset has a system enabling the detection of internal arcing and disconnecting
of power supply in order to limit the duration of the fault to less than 140 ms.
This system incorporates an electro-mechanical fail-safe trip system, located on
the cubicle flaps. This unit transmits information to Sepam to give the circuit-breaker
upstream of the fault the opening order.

MCset
Basic version (gas exhaust): MCset is designed to eliminate the effects of internal
arcing in total safety, due to:
b metal flaps positioned above the enclosure, which in the case of internal fault,
limit overpressure in the compartments.
b nonflammable materials used for the cubicle.

Dependable mechanical control devices

All operations are carried out from the front face, including access to connections and
busbars.
The user is guided through icon-diagrams on each front panel making it easy
MT20077

to understand the operating sequence and device status.

Interlocks and padlocks prevent operator errors.
Several additional levels of security also protect operators:
b racking in and out is only possible with the door closed;
b the very extensive set of mechanical and electrical interlocks do not allow operator
error. These can be added to by key locks or padlocks according to specific operating
procedures. Each selector can be fitted with one to three padlocks;
b all operations are carried out from the front face, including access to connections
and busbars;
b the voltage present indicator is located on the front face of the functional unit,
in the immediate vicinity of the earthing switch control.

Options
b disarming of circuit-breaker when racking out. This function enables
the circuit-breaker control springs to be disarmed during the extraction
operation.
b disabling of racking in. This function disables the possibility of racking
the withdrawable part in if the busbar is energized.

Conventional current transformers

Conventional current transformers are used to provide power to metering, measuring
or control devices. They measure the value of primary current from 10 A to 2500 A.
Schneider Electric has drawn up a list of current transformers which are appropriate
for use with digital protection devices in order to make it easier to determine accuracy
characteristics. This list is available in the selection guide on page 45.

CSP type broad-range current transformers

CSP type current sensors, designed for the Sepam 2000, work on the Rogowski
coil principle.
E34400

CSP sensors use a winding around an insulating core with no magnetic circuit, which
prevents saturated and residual flux.
Therefore, they are completely linear, and deliver an accurate secondary signal,
a perfect image of the primary current, without distortion for both steady and transient
states in the primary circuits. These sensors have much wider primary current ranges
than current transformers do.
The combining of CSP sensors and Sepam 2000 gives a consistent protection
and measurement system. This in turn makes current sensor specification simpler
(choosing from 3 sensors for a rated insulation level of 17.5 kV).

CSP 3210 160 to 640 A
CSP 3310 160 to 1600 A

Voltage transformers
These supply power to:
b measuring, metering and monitoring devices;
b relays or protective devices;
b auxiliary LV sources for various types of switchgear; all these devices are protected
and insulated from the MV section.
They are installed at the bottom of the functional unit. In the withdrawable fuse version,
the voltage transformers are attached to a side wall. The energized part is entirely
encapsulated in an epoxy resin, which provides both electrical insulation and
excellent mechanical strength.
They include the following models:
b with one insulated MV terminal, for connection between neutral and phase
conductors in three-phase systems with withdrawable MV fuses;
b with two insulated MV terminals, for connection between phase conductors.

Evolis circuit-breaker

Presentation
The Evolis circuit-breaker equips cubicles AD1-2-3 and CL1-2-3
at ratings of 7.2 kV to 17.5 kV.
MT20105

High electrical endurance

A magnetic field is applied in the axis of the vacuum interrupter contacts.
This process maintains the arc in diffused mode even at high current values.
It ensures optimal dispersion of the energy over the contact surface and avoids
localised temperature rise.

The advantages of this technique are:

b a very compact vacuum interrupter;
b low energy dissipation of the arc in the vacuum interrupters.
Evolis is in conformity with the highest electrical endurance class
(IEC 60056: class E2).
MT20106

High mechanical endurance

The magnetic field is generated by a patented outside coil which surrounds
the contact area. This solution has many advantages:
b a simplified and therefore reliable vacuum interrupter unit;
b heavy duty contacts which do not distort under repeated switching operations.

This is the first time that a low voltage device control mechanism has been used on
a medium voltage circuit-breaker. The Masterpact control unit used on Evolis has
the advantages of a system which has been proven for over 10 years in hundreds of
thousands of installations.
Evolis is in conformity with the most demanding mechanical endurance class
(IEC 60056: class M2).

Evolis circuit-breaker (cont.)

Operating mechanism description

Evolis range circuit-breakers are actuated by an Masterpact operating mechanism,
that ensures a switching device closing and opening rate that is independent
MT20109

of the operator.
This operating mechanism, which is always motorised, can perform remote control
functions and enables fast reclosing cycles.
This Masterpact operating mechanism includes:
mechanical devices:
b an energy storage mechanism stores the energy required in the springs,
to close and then to open the device;
b a manual lever-controlled arming device;
b an electric motor-controlled (MCH) arming device which automatically rearms
the control unit as soon as the device is closed;.
Re-arming time less than 4 s;
b a mechanical opening and closing device using two push buttons situated
on the front circuit-breaker panel which are accessible with the cubicle door open
(circuit-breaker in the test position).
For the door closed control unit (circuit-breaker racked in): the circuit-breaker
can be opened by controlling the propulsor unit.
release units:
b an electrical closing device (XF), comprising a closing release for remote control
with an anti-pumping device;
b an electrical opening device comprising one or several opening releases.
The basic circuit-breaker equipment comprises a shunt trip unit (MX).
This can be supplemented with the following options:
v either a second shunt release unit (MX),
v or an undervoltage release unit (MN),
v or an undervoltage release unit with time delay (MN + delay unit).
b a switching operation counter (CDM);
b an indication contact for when the circuit-breaker is "Ready to close" (PF) - option;
b an indication contact for when the circuit-breaker is "Ready to Function" (PAF) - option;
b a position indicator for "open" "closed" through a mechanical "black-white" indicator;
b a multipin connector to disconnect the auxiliary circuits in the "racked-out" position.
auxiliary contacts:
b 4 changeover contacts are available;
b 1 or 2 blocks of 4 changeover contacts can be added as an option.

Antipumping function
In the case of latched opening and closing orders, the device is blocked
in the open position.
This function involves on one hand giving absolute priority to the opening order,
but also and above all to stopping closing, in order to avoid the device being locked
in an indefinite opening/closing cycle:
b the opening and closing coils can be supplied power on a permanent basis
in order to provide electrical interlocking: there is no internal self-breaking contact
in the device.
b interlocking between the opening and closing orders, for whatever reason,
is achieved in a standard manner within the device’s control mechanism.

Charging motor and associated mechanism (MCH)

The MCH unit arms and rearms the energy storage springs as soon as the circuit-
breaker is closed. This enables instant reclosing of the device after opening.
MT55165

The arming lever is only used as back up control in the absence of an auxiliary
voltage.
The MCH is equipped as standard with a CH limit switch.
This contact indicates the "armed" position of the mechanism (spring armed).

in the "open" position.The possibility of installing a second release as an option.

This causes the instantaneous opening of the circuit-breaker as soon as the power
is supplied, and can be supplied power on a permanent basis or on an impulse basis.

Closing release on energising (XF)

This causes the circuit-breaker to close when the control unit is armed.

The switching operation counter is visible from the front panel. It gives a total number
9
0039 of switching cycles that the device has been through.

"Ready to close" contact (PF) - option

b the "ready to close" position of the circuit-breaker is indicated by a mechanical
indicator and a PF changeover contact.

Undervoltage release (MN) - option

This release unit causes the instantaneous opening of the circuit-breaker when
its supply voltage drops below a value of between 35 and 70% of its rated voltage.
MT55164

If the release unit is not supplied power, it is impossible to close (manually or

electrically) the circuit-breaker. Any attempt to close the circuit-breaker causes no
movement of the main contacts. Closing of the main circuit-breaker is authorised
when the supply voltage of the release unit reaches 85% of its rated voltage.

Time delay for undervoltage release unit (MN) - option

In order to eliminate spurious tripping of the circuit-breaker during short voltage sags
(micro-outage), the action of the MN is time-delayed.
MT55170

This function is achieved by adding an external time delay unit on the MN voltage
release unit (adjustable).
The time delay unit placed outside of the circuit-breaker can be disabled by
an emergency stop button in order to obtain instantaneous opening.

Installation Connections 0

Switchgear resistance to ageing in a substation depends on

3 key factors
E72901R

b the need for correctly made connections

New cold connecting technologies offer easy installation and favour durability
in time. Their design means they can be used in polluted environments with harsh
atmospheres.
b the impact of relative humidity
The installing of a heating element is essential in climates with high relative
humidities and significant temperature differentials.
b ventilation control
The dimensions of air vents must be appropriate for the dissipated energy
in the substation. They must only sweep across the transformer environment.
Cold connected terminals
Schneider Electric’s experience has led it to favour this technology wherever
possible for optimum durability.
The maximum acceptable cable cross-section for standard assemblies are:
b 630 mm2 for incomer or feeder cubicles with single-pole cables;
b 400 mm2 for incomer or feeder cubicles with three-pole cables;
b 95 mm2 for transformer protection cubicles with fuses.
Access to the compartment is only possible when the earthing switch is closed.
Tightening torques for cables will be attained using a dynamo wrench set to 50 mN.
