One of the most detested church
groups in America can continue to
picket military funerals after the
supreme court ruled in favour of
their right to free speech.
The fervently anti-gay Westboro
Baptist church demonstrates at
military funerals across the US
claiming the Iraq and Afghanistan
wars are God's punishment on
America for tolerating
homosexuality.
The court decision, at the end of
a classic free speech debate, will
anger military families who have
turned up for services to find the
group waving placards rejoicing
in the deaths and who want other
families to be spared the same
ordeal.
The supreme court ruled eight to
one in favour of Westboro in a
case brought by Albert Snyder,
father of a 20-year-old marine,
Lance-Corporal Matthew Snyder,
who was killed in Iraq in 2006
and buried in Maryland. Outside
his funeral, Westboro church
members carried placards saying
Thank God for Dead Soldiers and
You're Going to Hell. Among the
placards was one describing
marines as "fags".
The group has turned up to about
200 military funerals, regardless
of whether the dead are gay or
not: Snyder was not. His father
launched a legal action a year
later, saying he objected to the
service being marred in this way
and that he had suffered
emotional distress. He won $11m
(£6.7m) in damages against the
church, and this was later cut by a
judge to $5m.
The federal appeals court in
Virginia overturned the verdict,
ruling that the constitution
protected protesters from liability.
The supreme court upheld that
ruling on Wednesday.
Chief justice John Roberts
acknowledged in his ruling that
the protesters caused pain but
concluded the constitutional right
to free speech overrode that.
Judges and lawyers in lower
courts had argued that there were
times when free speech was not
protected, such as remarks that
were hateful or vulgar.
Roberts agreed that the Westboro
protesters' comments were hateful
and their contribution to public
discourse was negligble. "But
Westboro addressed matters of
public import on public property
in a peaceful manner in full
compliance with the guidance of
local officials," Roberts said.
The judge concluded: "Because
this nation has chosen to protect
even hurtful speech on public
issues to ensure that public debate
is not stifled, Westboro must be
shielded from tort liability for its
picketing in this case."
In the ruling, he noted the pain
such protests caused. "Speech is
powerful. It can stir people to
action, move them to tears of both
joy and sorrow, and — as it did
here — inflict great pain. On the
facts before us, we cannot react to
that pain by punishing the
speaker," Roberts said.
The dissenting voice on the
supreme court, Samuel Alito,
said: "Our profound national
commitment to free and open
debate is not a licence for the
vicious verbal assault that
occurred in this case."
Alito added: "In order to have a
society in which public issues can
be openly and vigorously debated,
it is not necessary to allow the
brutalisation of innocent victims
like the petitioner."
The Westboro church is small,
with a congregation of about only
70, made up mainly of the
extended family of the Reverend
Fred Phelps. In 2007 the BBC
broadcast a programme by Louis
Theroux which was billed as The
Most Hated Family in America.
Two years later, the Home Office
banned Phelps from entry to the
UK where he planned a picket.
As well as picketing military
funerals, the church also pickets
sporting events, concerts and
other occasions in the apparent
hope of publicity. As well as
being anti-gay, it is also anti-
Jewish, anti-Catholic and anti-
Chinese.
Snyder's case was backed by 42
out of 100 US senators, veterans
groups and 48 states, some of
which have already introduced
bans on the presence of the
demonstrators near funerals.
But some mainstream media
groups backed the church because
of fear that a victory for Snyder
could undermine the
constitutional right to free speech.

thin but energetic Steve Jobs
made a surprise return to the
spotlight on Wednesday, taking
the stage to unveil Apple Inc's
new iPad and drawing a standing
ovation.
The Silicon Valley legend has
been out on medical leave since
late January and his reappearance,
in trademark turtleneck and jeans,
bolstered Apple shares and
reassured investors and fans
worried about his health.
Defying speculation in some
tabloid reports that he was at
death's door, Jobs took swipes at
rivals and mocked competing
tablet computers. Striding back
and forth across the stage at the
Yerba Buena Center, Jobs spoke
passionately about the iPad 2's
features as No. 2 and heir
apparent Tim Cook looked on.
"We've been working on this
product for a while and I just
didn't want to miss today," the
industry icon told a packed
auditorium in San Francisco,
holding forth with his
characteristic flair and energy.
In the run-up to the event, there
had been almost as much
speculation about whether Jobs
would appear as there was about
the device itself. Jobs, who has
been treated for a rare form of
pancreatic cancer, had been on
indefinite medical leave for an
undisclosed condition.
His return to the spotlight comes
at a critical moment. Apple is
launching the next generation of
its ground-breaking tablet
computer just as its main
adversaries are releasing their first
such devices.
The $499 iPad 2 is thinner than
the iPhone 4, twice as fast as the
last tablet, camera-equipped, and
ships March 11 in the United
States and then March 25 in 26
more countries. The surprisingly
fast roll-out highlights the fierce
competition in the tablet market.
"Steve Jobs is the most important
asset for Apple without a doubt
and that's why investors are so
curious about whether he will
remain and continue to have an
impact," said Robert Lutts, chief
investment officer at Cabot

appearance but not as much as it
normally would if Apple had a
fully healthy CEO."
COOK TAKES A SEAT
The iPad 2 goes on sale at AT&T
Inc and Verizon Wireless, and at
$499 is about $100 cheaper than
Motorola Mobility's Xoom. Its
shares slid 4 percent.
Avian Securities analyst Matthew
Thornton said Motorola investors
were disappointed with both the
release date, which is earlier than
expected, and the aggressive
pricing.
"The hardware is as good as
anything on the market, the price
is still very aggressive and the
software just buries the
competition," said Gartner analyst
Van Baker. "They're still the guys
to beat by a large margin."
"This does serious damage to the
competitors in the market. Xoom
now looks like an extraordinarily
expensive tablet, and the HP
tablet looks under-featured."
Apple sold nearly 15 million
iPads in nine months of 2010, two
or three times as many as analysts
had predicted. The company is
expected to sell 30 million or
more this year, which would
generate close to $20 billion in
sales.

Muammar Gaddafi launched a
land and air offensive to retake
territory in Libya's east at dawn
on Wednesday, sparking a rebel
call for foreign air strikes on
African mercenaries they said
were helping him stay in power.
The veteran ruler twinned the
attack with a fiery propaganda
broadside against the rebels,
playing on both nationalist
opinion and Western jitters by
saying much blood would be shed
in "another Vietnam" if foreign
powers intervened in the crisis.
"We will enter a bloody war and
thousands and thousands of
Libyans will die if the United
States enters or NATO enters,"
Gaddafi told Tripoli supporters at
a gathering televised live.
"We are ready to hand out
weapons to a million, or 2 million
or 3 million, and another Vietnam
will begin. It doesn't matter to us.

anything."

troops briefly captured Brega, an
oil export terminal, before being
driven back by rebels who have
held the town 800 km (500 miles)
east of Tripoli for about a week,
rebel officers said, adding they
were ready to move westwards
against Gaddafi's forces if he

backed by heavy weapons and air
strikes. One of the witnesses said
Gaddafi's forces were 2-3 km
from the city center and had 300-
350 rebels pinned down at an oil
industry airport on the city
outskirts.

Apple on Wednesday launched
the iPad 2, a thinner, lighter and
viewing objects as small as 50 nm
wide, and what's more, the tech
behind it imposes no theoretical
limit in the size of feature that can
be seen.
This incredible jump in capacity
could allow humans to see inside
human cells and even live viruses
for the first time, which in turn
could give us many new insights
into their structures and
behaviors.
"This is a world record in terms of
how small an optical microscope
can go by direct imaging under a
light source covering the whole
range of optical spectrum," says
Professor Lin Li, who initiated
and led the research with
academics at the National
University and Data Storage
Institute of Singapore. In a news
release, Li adds:
Not only have we been able to
see items of 50 nanometers, we
believe that is just the start and we
will be able to see far smaller
items. Theoretically, there is no
limit on how small an object we
will be able to see. Seeing inside a
cell directly, without dying, and
seeing living viruses directly
could revolutionize the way cells
are studied and allow us to

The iPad 2 weighs 1.3 pounds,
just 0.2 pounds lighter than the
previous iPad. Held in the hands,
this minor weight change will
examine closely viruses and
biomedicine for the first time.
Because light waves inevitably
spread out as they travel through
space, there is a diffraction limit
that caps the degree to which light
waves can be focused, which in
turn caps the size of an object that
can be viewed.
The surfaces of objects, even
objects as tiny as viruses, emit
"evanescent waves" that fade so
quickly they are usually lost, but
this fast fading also frees them
make a significant difference,
especially when you’re reading
books or watching video for long
periods of time. It felt much easier
on the wrists.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a
surprise appearance at this
morning's iPad 2 unveiling,
bringing event attendees to their
feet for a standing ovation. It was
Jobs' first appearance at an Apple
event since announcing his third
medical leave from the company,
and an unexpected one at that.
The week prior, Chief Operating
Officer Tim Cook, who Jobs had
put in charge of running Apple's
day-to-day operations in his
absence, had presided over the
company's annual shareholders
meeting, leading many to believe
that Jobs would also be sitting this
morning's event out.
Jobs appeared at ease with the
crowd, soaking up the warm
reception when first entering the
stage, as well as commanding the
role of master of ceremonies for
the hour and 15-minute
presentation. "We've been
working on this product for a
while, and I didn't want to miss
today," he said.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs looks
thin, but well, as he takes the
stage in San Francisco.
Apple on Wednesday unveiled
the iPad 2, showing off a handful
of upgrades intended to cement
the tablet’s market-leading
position.
With dual cameras (front and
back), an upgraded A5 processor,
support for HD video recording
and playback, and a thinner
profile, the iPad 2 looks to be a
worthy successor to the first
model.
The iPad 2 will be available for
purchase starting March 11,
Apple said.
Despite the increased power,
Apple claims that the new iPad
will have the same battery life as
the first model: 10 hours of active
use and about a month of standby.
It does not have several features
that competing, Android-based
tablets offer, such as a USB port
or SD card reader.
The new iPad will come in two
colors (black and white), will
offer 3G data connectivity from
AT&T or Verizon as an option,
and will have the same starting
price as the first model ($500 for
a Wi-Fi only 16GB version).

strategy, argue Yoshihara and
Holmes. Sure, the People's
Liberation Navy is trying to deny
the U.S. Navy the ability to
operate near China's shores--all
navies do that--but denying a
power its military objectives

right." And China's Mahanians are
not simply after the unification of
Taiwan. Rather, as a great power,
China wants assured access to key
sources of commerce and to
secure the routes upon which that
commerce flows.
Yoshihara and Holmes urge
readers to imagine a strategy
defined by geographic concentric
circles. First, China will want to
command the waters around its
periphery. This includes the
Yellow, South, and East China
Seas, or what China calls the
"near seas." Second, after Beijing
is confident that it controls access
to the areas around its shores, it
will become a truly seafaring
nation--one that can access and
command what it calls the "far
seas," a geographic region that
includes the main sources of its
natural resource and maritime
trade. This means that the Chinese
Navy is turning its attention, full
steam ahead, to the Indian Ocean
and the countries that sit astride it.
If, as Yoshihara and Holmes
argue, the Chinese are true
Mahanians, they will never allow
other powers to control access to
the Indian Ocean's routes of
ingress and egress. Rather, they
will require and seek the capacity
to use overbearing power against
those who might interfere with
their commercial routes. This
explanation of China's turn to the
west seems altogether plausible
given the PLA's interest in control
of the South China Sea and its
nuclear submarine base at Hainan
Island.
This picture of Chinese strategy
is so shockingly at variance with
contemporary thinking about
maritime strategy that the
temptation to dismiss it will be
strong. As Yoshihara and Holmes
point out, "Westerners ... agree
with Norman Angell (famous for
declaring war a thing of the past
on the eve of World War I) that
the world has largely transcended
power politics." Battle fleets
meant to defeat an enemy
competing over command of the
seas are irrelevant. Our own
maritime strategy is suffused with
such thought: It declares that we
are in an era of a thousand-ship
navy comprised of fleets from all
over the world coming together to
police the maritime commons
together. In the contemporary
Western liberal mind, the
commons are not something to be
commanded; they are a public
good to be upheld by all
responsible nations. The prime
mission of the thousand-ship navy
is not to defeat an enemy navy
decisively--Yoshihara and
Holmes remind us that the
thousand- ship navy has been
renamed the Global Maritime
Partnership because the term
"navy" sounded too bellicose to
many potential partners--but the
main purpose of maritime strategy
now is to clear the sea lanes of
pirates and conduct humanitarian
missions, thereby making the
world safe for commerce.
Even the Chinese, our defense
leaders are quick to remind us, are
becoming liberal internationalists;
they are conducting antipiracy
missions around the Gulf of Aden.
Surely the Chinese understand
that it is not in their interests to
undermine good order at sea! The
idea of navies visiting upon each
other overbearing destruction in
the service of sea control and
assured access sounds so
anachronistic--so 19th century--
that it is difficult for the
postmodern Western mind to
accept that anyone can think in
these terms.
But wait! caution Yoshihara and
Holmes. Let's understand what the
Chinese are actually saying and
doing. They appear to have a
definition of the commons at odds
with that provided by Western
property law and commonly used
by contemporary Western foreign
policy hands. Western analysts
define the commons as shared
space that no one owns and from
which everyone benefits; for
Chinese naval strategists,
however, the commons is
something a great power must
control. The authors quote many
Chinese officers, including Major
General Jiang Shiliang, who
believes that it is incumbent upon
a sea power to have "absolute
control of strategic passages
traversed by vital goods" and
"absolute command" of critical
waters and geographic assets.
China is not prepared to leave the
protection of the "wide common
over which men may pass in all
directions," as Admiral Mahan
described the sea, to the tender
mercies of a hostile U.S. Navy.
And how might the Chinese go
about the project of "controlling
strategic passages" and obtaining
"absolute command" of critical
waters and geography? The
Chinese Navy will keep U.S.
naval forces at bay by utilizing its
growing undersea force, its land-
based antiship ballistic missiles,
and its many antiship cruise
missiles fired off surface and
subsurface ships. With antiship
cruise and ballistic missiles fired
from land or sea, China may be
able to whittle down the U.S.
Navy far into the Pacific while
preparing for a Mahan-like
decisive engagement closer to
Chinese waters. And if China
succeeds in retaking Taiwan--a
foremost objective of those
Chinese Mahanians--it can place
naval assets on the island.
Together with its already
substantial base on Hainan island,
Chinese naval assets on Taiwan
can render the Luzon Strait in the
Philippine Sea impassable for the
U.S. Navy. In this scenario the
Chinese will have created enough
strategic depth to probe the thinly
defended north through the
Ryukyu Islands, and conduct

operations in the southern part of
the South China Sea near Luzon.
The U.S. Navy would be
dispersed and forced into a
defensive crouch.
As Yoshihara and Holmes point
out, by "driving up the costs of
entry" of the U.S. Navy, the
Chinese can deter U.S.
involvement in Asian waters and
impose local dominance long
enough to realize such strategic
objectives as exerting more sea
control westward into the Indian
Ocean. They describe how, with a
strong undersea force, and cruise
and ballistic missiles, China can
make critical passageways no-go
zones for the U.S. Navy. And they
make a persuasive case that sea
denial inexorably opens the way
to greater command of the sea.
But while they argue that denying
important seas to the U.S. Navy
provides China with the
possibility of sea control, they do
not describe how China would
conduct a Mahanian-style
engagement that will overpower
the U.S. Navy.
How does China engage the
United States in a major fleet
engagement without a major
fleet? The answer provided here is
that China is adapting Mahan's
ideas to Chinese, particularly
Maoist, strategic traditions. The
Chinese Navy will dominate using
a form of guerrilla naval
techniques. To be sure, it is not
obvious that guerrilla tactics at
sea would have the same effects
as those that drive an enemy from

There's Little Chance the Budget Will Be Done in 2 Weeks

It is hard to write about anything
these days other than the budget
confrontation/showdown/
negotiation/fandango. It was
prudent tactically for Speaker
John Boehner (Ohio) and his
House Republicans to find a way
to push off a real showdown on
this year's continuing resolution
for a couple of weeks; the
timetable was simply not there for
resolving this set of issues by
March 4. Coming up with a two-
week fix that cut $4 billion
satisfies the hard-chargers in
Boehner's caucus; having that $4
billion come largely from
proposals for cuts made by the
administration and Congressional
Democrats satisfies them.
Now comes the hard part--
actually a cascading set of hard
parts. Perhaps two weeks of tough
negotiations reaches a deal for the
rest of the year. What are the odds
of that? I would put them at 10
percent, being generous. As I
wrote last week, the likelihood of
a deal that would cut more than
$15 billion to $20 billion from
what will be a half year of the
fiscal 2011 discretionary budget is
itself exceedingly slim. The odds
are minuscule that the tea-party-
driven freshmen would accept the
equivalent of 15 or 20 cents on
the dollar from their pledge to cut
$100 billion this year without first
pushing for a confrontation. They
did not come here to cave barely
three months into their terms. And
now, of course, they are being
egged on by former Speaker Newt
Gingrich (R-Ga.), who has written
that the shutdowns in 1995 were
great for Republicans and for the
country, and nothing to fear
compared with abandoning
conservative principles.
The debate we should be having,
over the larger long-term debt
problem and over how to make
smart savings that preserve both a
safety net and critical investments
in the future, is both obscured by
the current one and made more
difficult to have if we end up with
vicious disputes and potential
shutdowns draining energy and
the tiny amount of trust and
goodwill that exists in the larger
political process.
One tactical option Republican
leaders have kicked around is to
do the two-week or short-term fix
over and over, making each
extension contingent on agreeing
to another $2 billion to $4 billion
in cuts and forcing Democrats
either to accept them or shut down
the government over a tiny
amount relative to the whole
budget.
There are three potential pitfalls
with that approach. One is that the
freshmen may quickly lose
patience with a slow chipping
way and demand stronger and
quicker action. A second is that as
these negotiations turn into a
series of mini-confrontations
stretching into the fall, they will
greatly complicate everything else
--including their overlap with the
looming confrontation over the
debt ceiling and the coming
battles over appropriations for
fiscal 2012.
The third is that we move from
the abstract--cut $61 billion for
the bloated federal budget--to a
series of specific program cuts.
All of a sudden, the debate is over
issues like slashing the Food and
Drug Administration budget by 25
percent, slashing the National
Institutes of Health and the
Centers for Disease Control,
cutting border security guards,
cutting money for infants and
children's' feeding programs and
Head Start, cutting from military
recruitment and retention, cutting
deeply from the programs the
Institute of Peace is conducting in
Afghanistan and Iraq that Gen.
David Petraeus relies upon or aide
to Egypt as it struggles to avoid a
turn to extremism, cutting Pell
Grants--and on and on.
There are two larger problems
that flow from this current focus.
The first is that the numbers
sound relatively small--even $61
billion in cuts from a budget that
is 50 times bigger, to cut a deficit
that is 25 times bigger, seems
piddly. But since the cuts come
from one-eighth of the budget,
and since they cover one-half of
the year, meaning they come from
one-sixteenth of the budget, the
implications are huge. Non-
security discretionary spending is
roughly $480 billion, meaning
half the year is $240 billion,
meaning a $60 billion cut would
be 25 percent across the board if
we include everything. That
would be immensely disruptive,
all for piddling savings. This is
the wrong debate to be having.
The second problem actually
flows from the first. The debate
we should be having, over the
larger long-term debt problem and
over how to make smart savings
that preserve both a safety net and
critical investments in the future,
is both obscured by the current
one and made more difficult to
have if we end up with vicious
disputes and potential shutdowns
draining energy and the tiny
amount of trust and goodwill that
exists in the larger political
process. Not to mention that the
focus on cuts this year, when
there is a real danger of
weakening further a job-depleted
struggling economy, could add
immensely to our debt burden by
pushing us back into recession.

Maybe the Senate "gang of six"
can transcend the current dynamic
and provide a framework to move
beyond it. Maybe we will have a
shutdown or two that lasts long
enough to disrupt people's lives
and force the parties to the table
this year to talk about the bigger,
long-term issues that have to
include defense, entitlements and
taxes all at the same time. That
scenario is not entirely out of the
question. But the current path
surely does not make it easy to
achieve. It is more likely, I fear,
that we change in April from
confrontation over $2 billion or
$4 billion to confrontation over
raising the debt limit, a much
more deadly risk to the American
and global economy. Norman J.

Holmes omit a Chinese concept of
sea control conducive to
providing others with security for
a simple reason: The Chinese
don't have one. Maybe the
Chinese are Maoist guerrillas at
sea, looking to tear down the U.S.
Navy's ability to provide security
to its allies and maintain the
maritime trading system, without
providing an alternative. If the
Chinese succeed at command of
the sea through guerilla tactics,
the world will look quite different

disturbance to the regional order.
Red Star Over the Pacific is the
most comprehensive study of
Chinese maritime strategy to date.
They take seriously Chinese
concepts of sea control, as well as
China's deep engagement with
long-dead maritime thinkers. And

One of the problems with writing
a book on decision-making is that
people assume I’m not terrible at
making decisions. As a result,
they act surprised when it takes
me ten minutes to pick a sandwich
or when I confess that I still get
mild panic attacks when choosing
floss at the drug store. They
believe that, just because I wrote
about the prefrontal cortex, I’m
somehow better able to wield
mine. But that’s not necessarily
the case: there’s an indefatigable
gap between theory and life.
While it’s true that I’m no longer
quite so indecisive – I don’t spend
30 minutes debating breakfast
cereals in the supermarket
anymore – I still suffer from the
occasional bout of “paralysis-by-
analysis.” If you see a guy
looking distraught while
comparing the active ingredients
of various toothpastes, look again.
That might be me.
In essence, my basic decision-
making flaw is that I tend to treat
easy consumer decisions
(toothpaste, floss, shampoo,
laundry detergent, etc.) as if they
were really difficult. Although I
know that every floss will work
well enough, I still can’t help but
contemplate the pros and cons of
waxed versus unwaxed, spearmint
versus wintermint. It’s an
embarrassing waste of time, and
yet it happens to me all the time.
Why do I do this? Why do I

that initially seemed unimportant
because people expect them to be
easier.
To demonstrate their point, Sela
and Berger conducted a number
of clever experiments. In one test,
they gave people a selection of
airline flight options. One group
was given these options in a
small, low-contrast font (high-
difficulty condition) while a
second group was given the same
options in a larger, high contrast
font (low-difficulty condition).
Not surprisingly, the hard to read
font led to increased deliberation
time, as people were forced to
decipher their alternatives. What
was more interesting is that this
extra effort led to perceptions of
increased importance – the flight
options now seemed like a
weighty decision with profound
consequences. (This effect was
especially pronounced when
people were led to believe that the
choice of flights was actually
unimportant.)
This leads Sela and Berger to
elaborate on their quicksand
squander so much mental energy excess of information with difficulty while making a decision metaphor:

more time on a decision that

unimportant. Quicksand sucks
people in, but the worse it seems
the more people struggle.
The problem, of course, is that
the modern marketplace is a
conspiracy to confuse, to trick the
mind into believing that our most
banal choices are actually
extremely significant. Companies
spend a fortune trying to convince
us that only their toothpaste will
clean our teeth, or that only their
detergent will remove the stains
from our clothes, or that every
other cereal tastes like cardboard.
And then there is the surreal
abundance of the store shelf. Do
we really need 13 different
varieties of Cheerios? Why does
the average drug store contain 55
floss alternatives and more than
350 kinds of toothpaste? While all
these products are designed to
cater to particular consumer
niches, they end up duping the
brain into believing that picking a
floss is a high-stakes game, since
it’s so damn hard. And so we get
mired in decision-making
quicksand.
The good news is that some
companies are starting to realize
this is a marketing mistake, that
people get turned off by the
illusion of difficulty. Choosing
oral hygiene products shouldn’t
feel like the SAT. Here’s Ellen
Byron, writing last week in the
WSJ:
Some manufacturers are putting
the brakes on new-product
introductions. Last year, 69 new
toothpastes hit store shelves,
down from 102 in 2007,
according to market-research firm
Mintel International Group.
Procter & Gamble Co., maker of
Crest, says it has “significantly”
reduced the number of oral-care
products it makes world-wide in
the past two years. “We’ve come
to realize that fewer is better,”
says Matt Doyle, director of
global oral-care research and
development at P&G.
Stores are trying to simplify, too.
Last month, 352 distinct types or
sizes of toothpaste were sold at
retail, down from 412 in March
2008, according to Spire LLC,
which tracks shopping data from
more than 30 million U.S.
households.
Supervalu Inc., the supermarket
giant, has capped the number of
package sizes and flavor versions
in its stores. “The palate might not
be able to discern that sixth
variant of mint,” says John
Mullaney, Supervalu’s director of
personal care.
In the meantime, I’m going to
continue my quest for self-
improvement, reminding myself
to be less of a maximizer and
more of a satisficer. If I keep on
telling myself that my selection of
floss doesn’t really matter – that
the importance of the decision is a
cognitive illusion – then I’m
bound to one day realize it’s true.
I can finally spend my time
worrying about more important
things, like what to eat for lunch.

On the day that Ireland beat
England at cricket, Arsenal would
be unwise to think they will coast
to victory over little Leyton
Orient. Then again, they hardly
needed the reminder provided by
Ireland's victory over England at
cricket, given that the Os
punished their slackness in the
first match last week and, of
course, on Sunday Birmingham
prevented them from finally
vindicating Arsene Wenger's
obstinacy. In the light of those
setbacks, this is a time for Arsenal
to demonstrate not merely their
skill but also a level of mental
strength that many suspect them
of lacking, a little like the Ireland
cricket team who beat England
today. Chelsea gave them a boost
last night, tonight Arsenal must
give themselves an even bigger
boost by proving their worth
ahead of far bigger tests, a bit like
the Ireland team who beat
England today. At cricket!

meanwhile, should treat this as an
opportunity to get his finger out or
risk getting the hook for the run-
in.
As for Orient, Tehoue doesn't get
a start despite his late equaliser in
the first match, though that's not a
surprise since he has been ill and,
furthermore, admits to being "four
to five kilos" overweight. Daniels
and Dawson do play, however,
and for me they were the
outstanding players in the first
match.

his area to tidy up before Revell
can get to it. "Despite all the flak
King Bendtner gets I would rather
he start against Barca," confesses
Gareth Holden. "Chamakh has
looked out of sorts lately, whereas
Bendtner actually looked pretty
good the last few times he played.
If I had any criticism of him it is
that he is too desperate to get a
goal and spurns open teammates
in favour of low percentage goal
attempts (mind you, most of his
teammates seem to have the
opposite problem). If he would be
a bit more selfless I can't see why
he can't make it happen against
Barca."
5 min: Arsenal had most of the
ball in the opening minutes but
when Orient finally got hold of it
a moment ago they showed
admirable crispness and
composure to piece together a fine
move, which Gibbs eventually
brought to an end.
6 min: The dynamic Dawson,
whose country beat England today
- at cricket! - hares back to
dispossess Bendtner in the box
just as the Dane was winding up a
shot. Goal kick averted, then.
GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Orient
(Chamakh 7') All too easy really.
Rosicky pounced on a loose ball
about 30 yards out and sprinted
into the box before pulling the
ball back to Chamakh, who
guided a low shot into the corner
from eight yards.
9 min: Gibbs, who was a real
attacking threat in the first match,
scampers to the by-line and pulls
the ball back for Chamakh, but

Johnson. "I like him a lot, he
seemed like a nicer guy than he
gets credit for in his interview on
Football Focus. He's also scored
four goals in the FA Cup this
year, so look for him to do
something today."
15 min: At this point you
wouldn't rule out a repeat of the
first leg. Arsenal have not been

Arsenal collapse may be
beginning. They've nodded off
over the last few minutes and
Orient are getting closer. Again it

for an automatic reverse function
that would prevent a child’s neck
or hand from getting caught in a
closing window, if they
inadvertently pressed down the
switch that raises the window.
There are few fatalities or serious
injuries that additional safety
requirements could prevent,
NHTSA stated in a notice about
the nixed rule. Any new
regulation “would instead address
primarily ‘finger-pinch’ type
injuries.”
Vehicle redesigns have largely
addressed the issue, and now have
window switches that need to be
pulled up. Window switches that
are pressed down to close
automatic windows have been
replaced, virtually eliminating the

not refer to a group like “Arabs”
or “Palestinians” as a group even

though one hundred percent of
Palestinians have voted for one of
two terrorist groups — the PLO
and Hamas. Even the fifth paper,
which printed the ad— the UCLA
Daily Bruin– required us to
reword passages to avoid the use
of the terms “Arabs” and
“Palestinianas” and said we could
not refer to the goals of Hamas
and the PLO as “genocidal” even
though they are. Of course, no
such injunction against offending
religious and ethnic groups
applies to Jews or Christians or
Israelis or Americans.
The frontline battle against
Islamic totalitarianism is the battle
to defend the First Amendment
— the right of assembly and free
speech. Yes, these rights are
regularly abused by Islamic
totalitarians and their “civil rights
organizations” like CAIR (a
creature of the Muslim
Brotherhood and a sister
organization to the MSA and
Hamas) just as they were by
Communist totalitarians during
the Cold War. This is a
vulnerability of free societies —
that they give rights to those
whose goal is to destroy those
rights — but it is a vulnerability
we must deal with by combatting
them through vigorous argument
