URBS AETERNA PROJECT

ROME—THE ETERNAL CITY

As it stands today, the Roman Forum remains mostly in ruins after

centuries of change and transformation. At the height of the Roman Empire,
the Romans controlled almost all of the Mediterranean world and therefore
greatly influenced and dominated both the people and culture of those living
under their rule. The most spectacular place to see was the city of Rome,
itself. It was an ancient metropolis, bustling with people, shops,
entertainment, food and drink and leisure.
A large number of these ancient buildings and “hot spots” are still
standing today—in some shape or form. Finally, the monuments that stand in
Rome, remain a footprint of the past and a testament to Rome’s lasting
legacy.

YOUR TASK

Research a famous Roman monument/building and create an

attractive travel brochure

PROCEDURES

1. Select a monument/building for your research

2. List of Facts to Find
• When was your monument built?
• Who built it?
• Dates of major renovations or when rebuilt
• Where was it located? (Attach a “you are here” map)
• Still standing? If not, when was it lost?
• What it was used for/Its significance or importance to the
Romans
• Both its Latin and English name
• Any interesting anecdotes (must have at least one!)

building it
 Model of the monument—in paper, cardboard,
modeling clay, graham crackers, etc. Be creative!
 Cross-sectional diagram of the inside of the building
 Detailed pictures (close ups) of the monuments
decorations (especially if there are bas relief,
paintings, statues, etc)
 Excerpts from a classical Roman author writing about
the monument
