Evaluation criteria for facilitating an online/class discussion (Adapted from Dabbagh, 2000)

raa - Page 6 of 17
Activity 6-2 Synchronous Discussion

1. What do you think of the virtual class etiquette proposed by the author?

The virtual class etiquette by Craig W. Smith is reasonable to me. He provided structure to all
his discussion participants regarding format and the use of punctuation marks. In a way, the
online participants were able to know how they should respond to the postings. Without Smith’s
guidelines, the online postings may result in different views due to the different formats. Some
online participants may also post in their own cyber language to which they were already
accustomed to using while conducting an online chat. The use of cyber language may alienate
some online participants who do not understand chat symbols and emoticons. As a result, some
participants may lose interest in the discussion and may not post anything at all.

Advantages:
-fosters courtesy and respect
-facilitates clear and unambiguous communication in the learning environment
-facilitates turn-taking among participants
-self-monitoring mechanism for participants
-instructor is able to interact in a dialog instead of monitoring the session the whole time
-emoticons and acronyms are used to convey non-verbal cues in a synchronous communication
if allowed by the moderator
-smooth flow of the discussion

2. Can you think of other ways of managing online chats? If yes, please articulate it.

I found some Web sites regarding chatiquettes.

Here are some suggestions:

-no crude language
-no personal attacks
-be polite
-no vulgar language
-no racist remark, sexually oriented remark, or religious persecution will be tolerated
-capital letters should only be used occasionally in special situations (in general capital
letters are seen as representing screaming)
-observe other posts or activity before deciding to join
-if you want to speak to a specific person, mention his or her nickname at the start of the
sentence
-never advertise another community or another chat
-don't join a chatroom and then leave without saying something; it is considered impolite to
enter a chatroom and then leave without saying something

raa - Page 7 of 17
-please chat "straight and sober"
-try to use a unique username to avoid duplication
-avoid polling or scrolling (series of lines, numbers, or spaces)
-keep messages short to avoid "flooding" other people's screens with a lot of text; if you have a
long message, break it into several sentences and send them separately
-when you leave a channel, say goodbye to the people you have been talking with so that they
will know that you've left

Activity 6-4 Building a Community of Learners

1. What are the similarities/convergences between the online learning community described by
Lock and the Community of Inquiry model described by Anderson (in Module 3)?

Karen Swan, Kent State University (2004)

Sloan-C

Jennifer V. Locke. (Laying the Groundwork for the Development of Learning Communities within
Online Courses)

The predominant similarities between Locke’s online learning community and Anderson’s
Community of Inquiry are the three presences (cognitive, social, teacher), the use of technology
to mediate communication, and learner-centeredness.

raa - Page 14 of 17
2. What roles does an online teacher play in the building of an online learning community? What
roles do learners play?

The online teacher develop courses with a view to promote community and need to have an
understanding of the pedagogical issues and the factors that foster or hinder community
development within an online learning environment (Locke, 133). The instructor communicates
with the learners to provide information and feedback within the community. Guidelines and
norms of participation are established by the online educator and shaped by the community
members.

In developing instructional materials that promote community, a major pedagogical factor to be

considered is instructional context. There should be relevant context that supports authentic
learning such as the use of real world problems, problem-based, and case-based learning
approaches.

Online learners construct their knowledge through content and interaction with the teacher,
content, and other learners. Collaboration is encouraged in Locke’s online learning community.
