NALA Updates
February 23, 2011
By Patricia C. DeRamus, ACP, FRP

NALA Applications for the May

Certified Paralegal Exam are Due April 1, 2011

April 1 is the deadline date for applications for the Certified Paralegal examination, May 2011 testing! Application forms
may be found on the NALA web site “Certification/Examinee Information.”

Help NALA Spread the Word!

The NALA Certifying Board utilizes the network of ACT to administer the examination. This can be costly to the
examinees. As a solution, NALA will also open testing sites outside of the ACT network in schools or employer locations for
students and employees. Details and an application form to qualify as a testing center are on the web at Certification/Qualifying as
a Testing Center.

In case you are wondering, to date, NALA has administered over 1500 sections of the Certified Paralegal Exam via the new
computer based testing process with very few glitches!

2011 NALA Convention and Summer Institutes

(Additional Details on NALA Website
http://www.nala.org/convention.aspx)

The 2011 annual meeting of NALA promises to be one of the most advanced programs ever offered. The educational
program consists of seven 3-day programs, in a classroom like format. They are designed to explore the subject in detail and leave
you with something you can use in your own work environment.

 Essential Skills – a review for the Certified Paralegal Exam, for those seeking certification, AND for those who are
working with their associations or schools in presenting a review course.
 Corporate Law – understanding of the lifecycle of a business on an advanced level.
 Estate Planning/Estate & Trust Administration – advanced planning techniques applied to client situations and tax
related concepts.
 Litigation Technology Institute – presented by the person who wrote the book “Using Computers in the Law Office.”
 Personal Injury Institute – a LIVE presentation of the Advanced Paralegal Certification, Personal Injury Core Course.
 Real Estate Institute – provides an intensive study of essential elements necessary for an understanding of real estate
law used by paralegals in transaction or litigation matters.
 Social Security Institute – This course takes a case from the initial interview through appeals in federal court.

LEAP Class of 2012

NALA’s Professional Development Committee is now accepting applications. The class members will be announced this summer
at the 2011 NALA Annual Meeting of Members, in Dallas. The current focus is on serving state and local affiliated associations,
and developing skills that support their goals and growth. Participation in LEAP will also enhance the leadership skills of NALA
members regardless of affiliate membership. LEAP is open to members of NALA who are also Certified Paralegals. Read more
about the LEAP classes on the web at www.nala.org/leap.aspx.

NALA to be Featured on February Program of The Paralegal Voice!

NALA President Karen McGee, ACP, and Continuing Education Council Chair, Christine Porter, ACP, will be featured guests on the
February show of The Paralegal Voice, produced by the Legal Talk Network. The show will be available for listening or
downloading by the end of the month. The program will include a discussion of how to revitalize your career by using continuing
education opportunities. To download (free) or listen to the podcast, visit http://legaltalknetwork.com/podcasts/paralegal-voice.
