Therme Vals
.
Address
Hotel Therme
7132 Vals
Switzerland
http://www.therme-vals.ch/

. With the only thermal spring in Graubünden, the Therme Spa is a

stunning landmark built from 60 000 stone slabs of Valser
quartzite. Stone by stone. The combinations of light and shade,
open and enclosed spaces and linear elements make for a highly
sensuous and restorative experience. Only two years after its
completion the Therme was listed as a protected building. It has
been described as “a lesson in combining audacity with
aesthetics“, “a totally unique, yet traditional spa and therapeutic
centre that is the last word in peaceful sensuality“, and “a world
first in spas”. The Vals quartzite quarried just two kilometres from
where the building stands. The great slabs of the roof are grassed
over: sections of flower studded alpine meadow.

Hotel Therme Vals

.
Address
Hotel Therme
7132 Vals
Switzerland
http://www.therme-vals.ch/

. In the Hotel adjacent to the world famous Therme Spa Peter

Zumthor has redesigned 52 rooms without altering the hotel’s
original 1960s structure. As part of the redevelopment, Der Rote
Saal (The Red Room), the hotel’s restaurant, was extended.
Although some parts of the complex are still in their original
state, they are all gradually being brought up to the standard of
the Therme itself, meaning the guest experiences. In 1983, the
town council bought the thermal spring and hotel, and the
company that manages the site today, Hotel und Thermalbad Vals
AG, is still 100% owned by the council. In 1986, Peter Zumthor, an
architect from Haldenstein, Switzerland, was commissioned to
build a new spa, and the resulting project received praise from
around the world. It has been described as “a lesson in combining
audacity with aesthetics“, “a totally unique, yet traditional spa
and therapeutic centre that is the last word in peaceful
sensuality“, and “a world first in spas”.

Church San Benedetg

.
Address
Caplutta Sogn Benedetg
Sumvitg
Switzerland
http://www.sumvitg.ch/

. This Zumthor church in a small village located in the Mountains is

“a cylinder that turns into an oval and then into a keel: the
geometry of this church, however definite, is also dynamic and
elusive to the eye, all this exacerbated by the implantation of the
building on a steep slope.”The church has a wooden construction
and the façade is made with wooden shingles, wooden snips,
similar to the locally build houses. The building is very carefully
detailed even on places you would normally not come (like behind
the concrete stairs of the entrance). The setting is wonderful.

.
How to get there
Take the car to Sumvitg in the canton of Graubünden. In this
village is one road up to San Benedigt (different ways to write).
It's about a km tough climbing for the car. In San Benedigt it is
easy to find your way to the church.

How to get there
It is not easy to get there. You have to pass Versam to the south.
You have to drive about 1,5km by car after you will pass the last
hotel in Versam. Then you will have to take a small road to the
right (before a tunnel). Then it is maybe 500m up to the hill. The
Gugalun is not visible from any place so look after a strange
mailbox behind the road. Park your car somewhere in the grass
and go further by feet, good luck!

Shelters for Roman Archaeological

Site
.
Address
Seilerbahnweg 17

Switzerland

. Protective housing for the remains of the foundations of three

Roman Buildings (which one of those only a corner is visible). This
protective casing for the archaeological finds was conceived as a
kind of abstract reconstruction of the Roman volumes: a
lightweight framework for walls made of timer lamella which
admit light and air exactly follows the Roman outer walls, thus
producing a package-like effect which give a visible form to photo: João Morgado
location of the Roman buildings in today's city landscape.

School Churwalden
.
Address
Witiwäg 19
7075 Churwalden
Switzerland
http://www.churwalden.ch/

. Very early work by Peter Zumthor, this addition to a school

complex consist of two new classrooms buildings and a
gymnasium, built out of concrete bricks. The classrooms develop
in two levels: entrance on a main corridor with a first
working-space, individual staircase leading to the upper floor,
that is the main teaching space, opening on a garden in the back.
photo: Alessandro Conti
From the outside, the gym looks as a 3-naves church; the interior
reveals that the roof of the shape is given by the structure,
running longitudinal to the gym.

Annalisa Zumthor House

.
Address
Leis
7132 Vals
Switzerland

. The small idyllic Swiss village of Leis is expanding in the form of

two new houses, designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor of
thermal bath fame. The lower of the two is called the Annalisa
Zumthor House in honor of Zumthor’s wife for whom the house
was built. The other is a rental. Both houses are constructed in
the Strickbau technique of solid laced-beam construction, a

method that Zumthor seems increasingly keen on recently.
