Numeracy
We will follow the National Numeracy Strategy and
look at different aspects of Mathematics to include
counting and properties of number, ordering and place
value, addition and subtraction, problem solving,
shape and space and data handling. We will explore
numbers within 100, counting in 1s, 2,s 5,s and 10,s
and use practical ways to learn about shape and
measures, including time weight, capacity and money.
We will continue with the mental maths programme,
called ‘Wigan Maths,’ which develops their skills of
number.
Physical Education:
Y1W on Monday and Thursday
Y1J on Wednesday and Friday
Y1C on Tuesday and Friday
We will develop skills through Games, gymnastics
and dance. Please ensure that your child has a full P.E
kit that is appropriate for indoor and outdoor lessons.
Please ensure that children do not wear any jewellery.
Trips/special events:
We will be visiting the local area including Manford Way
shops and the surrounding community, the library and
the Underground Station. We hope to go on a bus ride
to Hainault Forest. We would appreciate the help of
parent volunteers for these trips, but be aware that you
will need a CRB check.
Homework: Reading everyday.
Literacy/ Topic: 1 piece per week
Numeracy: 1 piece per week
Spellings.

We look forward to making your child’s
learning enjoyable by adopting a variety
of teaching strategies. This is a summary
of the learning programme for your child
for the Spring Term, together with
suggestions of things that you could do to
support your child during this term. We
hope you find this useful.
Creative Curriculum Themes
John Bramston is using a creative curriculum
which allows a more flexible cross curricular
approach to learning. During the Spring term
the children will be learning through the
following themes:
• Down our Street
• Special Times, which will include Chinese
New Year
• Book Week
• Easter
• Story Teller
THINGS TO REMEMBER!
*Children are not to bring toys into school.
* Children must bring in their reading books and
reading records every day. Please record your
children’s progress at home in their reading
record.
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and
will be collected on a Wednesday.
Literacy
We will be continuing the Letters and Sounds
programme which will help children with
sounding out words. We will develop writing
using fiction and non-fiction texts. This will
include traditional stories, information books and
poetry. In addition to these lessons handwriting,
reading with a teacher in groups and
independently, speaking and listening, drama
and extended creative writing will form part of
the Literacy curriculum in Year 1. These are
often taught through other subjects during the
week and not necessarily timetabled as Literacy.
PLEASE SUPPORT US
* The school continues to expect daily
attendance. If your child is absent from school
for any reason, please telephone us (020 8500
4640) on the first day of absence. If you do
not notify us the absence will be
unauthorised.
* Please ensure your child is on the playground
at 8.50 a.m. to ensure a prompt start to the
school day. The school day finishes at 3.30 p.m.
so please make sure you are already at school at
that time to collect your child promptly.
* Please make sure you advise the School Office
of any changes of address, telephone numbers,
emergency contacts etc.
*All children are encouraged to bring water
bottles to school with them each day. They may
buy a piece of fruit or carton of milk for 20p.
* We would appreciate if any parents could come
in to help us with reading.
