Dear Readers ,
Welcome to the World of Wisdom “WOW”, from Dr. Vikhe Patil Foundation's, Pravara Centre
for Management and Development.
Inspired by the unique vision of Padmashri Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil, firmly rooted in Social
Justice and Development, Dr. Vikhe Patil Foundation's PCMRD was given a concrete shape by
the dedicated efforts of Padma Bhushan Shri Balasaheb Vikhe Patil. For more than 25 years
we are effectively serving the specific needs of the student community and industry and the
society at large.
Teamwork is an essential pre-requisite for success in any walk of life and more so in the
present day corporate scenario. To harness the synergy available in small groups we
emphasize that our students involve in a lot of small group activity for personal growth and as a
precursor to the life that will await them after they graduate from the institute. It brings me
great pleasure to introduce to you our Institute's magazine “WOW”. The magazine takes you
through a series of events held at PCMRD in the year 2009-2010 from a student's perspective.
It also has a lot of interesting read contributed by the students and faculties. The entire
magazine is a student initiative conceptualized, designed, and edited all done by students
under the able guidance of the Management and a Lead Faculty.
Nevertheless to say that WOW has been possible only through a staunch belief of students in
core values of PCMRD i.e. 'Discipline, Devotion and Grit.' Students have worked round the
clock to shape this magazine and now present their WOW experiences to all the readers. A
request to all the esteemed readers is to provide your sincere feedback on WOW to the
Editorial board. This would only help in spiralling the effect of WOW.
I once again take this opportunity to congratulate the Editorial Board and all the Students who

Glorious 25 years into the service of providing quality
education, the winds of change are blowing strong.
Countrywide the educational scene is fast transforming into a
very competitive market driven entity.
One more feather added in Dr. Vikhe Patil Foundation -
PCMRD's cap is that Shri. Balasaheb Vikhe Patil was honored
by Government of India with one of the country's highest
civilian award “Padma Bhushan”.
We present to you the very first issue of our student magazine
“World of Wisdom” (WOW). The basic idea behind launching
the magazine is to inculcate the spirit of involvement among
the students. It presents the literary contributions and throws
light on various activities happening in the college. It also
highlights the students' achievements in academics, extra-
curricular and co-curricular activities.
Over the years, PCMRD has been instrumental in inculcating
a sense of drive and passion amongst the students. Students
are engaged in everything right from their academics to extra
curricular and co-curricular.
Through this magazine one can see our motto 'Let's Lead'
being achieved to a greater extent and higher spirits through
the tremendous hard work put in by the students of PCMRD.
The objective of this magazine is to showcase the quality of
all round excellence achieved by our students. It is indeed
gratifying to know that when you feel you are being swamped
by the work involved- collecting information & co-
coordinating with different departments & the college office
& then proof reading all of which seem to be unending, there
are always good Samaritans who offer help.

to take on young upstarts. For those uninitiated,
PRAVARA CENTRE FOR MANAGEMENT RESEARCH
AND DEVELOPMENT (PCMRD) was established in 1994
under the aegis of Dr. Vikhe Patil Foundation. Pravara Centre
for Management Research & Development (PCMRD) boasts
of having successfully completed more than 14 years of
excellence in imparting quality education in the field of
management. PCMRD offers a two-year full-time
postgraduate management education with specializations in
Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Systems and
Production & Operations.
We are Located in the heart of the city, and we have a
spacious and lush green campus congenial for the all round
and healthy development of students. We talk of brick and
mortar but is that what really makes an institution? It is the
faculty with a rich scholastic, research, consultancy and
corporate background that has enabled students to efficiently
bridge the gap between theory and practice of management.
The visiting faculty brings with them a rich corporate
experience that helps students to appreciate and understand
the objective social reality.
The environment at PCMRD is conducive to learning,

Padmashree Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil (1901-1980)
He started Asia's first co-operative
sugar factory at Loni in
Maharashtra. He firmly believed in
the philosophy that “Serving Man
amounts to Serving God”. He
strived for the socioeconomic and
cultural transformation of villages.
Padma Bhushan Shri Balasaheb Vikhe Patil is the eldest
son of the late legendary Padmashree Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil
and he has been awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan by
the government of India. A leader reckoning in Maharashtra
Dr. Ashok Patil is the first Indian to
become a President of International
Association of agricultural Medicine
and Rural Health (IAAMRH). Actively
participating in various trusts under

Vedic Mathematics

Mathematics plays an important role in any person's life. Whether it is a rich man or a poor man, a student or a professional, it
covers the entire gamut of our vast universe. It is a subject/topic which some (very miniscule %) like very much and are able to
handle a wide range of discussions on it, while there are some who tend to go as far as possible from it.
A small step is taken towards removing the 'Mathematics Fever' through this article which is based on 'Vedic Mathematics'. It is
the philosophy propounded by Jagadguru Swami Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji Maharaja of Govardhana Matha, Puri(1884-
1960).
Bharati Krsna wrote sixteen volumes expounding the Vedic system but these were unaccountably lost and when the loss was
confirmed in his final years he wrote a single book: Vedic Mathematics, currently available. It was published in 19z65, five
years after his death.
Some examples are given below to create interest in the minds of readers towards Vedic mathematics

Objective: To multiply 888 & 998

Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam Sutra: (It means 'vertically and crosswise')

The word "lethologica" describes the state of not being able to remember the word you want.

The examples consist of
numbers below the base,
above the base or better still if
one is above and other is
below the base. A point to be
observed is that when
Nikhilam sutra is applied
a) If the base is taken as 10 then only 1 digit is allowed in the right hand part of the answer,
b) Base is 100, then only 2 digits are allowed i.e. 1 less than the no of digits in the base.
So if we have more than the required no of digits on the right hand side then we have to carry over the excess digits to the left
hand side of the answer.
In the above examples the
numbers were near to the base
10/100/1000/10000. What if the
numbers are away from the base?
The Sub-sutra 'Anurupyena'
which simply means
'proportionately' takes care of this
aspect by application of working
base. Here's an example to
illustrate this aspect:
Multiply 235 X 247
Theoretical base is 1000. Working base
is 1000/4 = 250
A very interesting corollary to Nikhilam
sutra is 'Ekadekyen Purvena' which
means 'one more than the previous
one'. It is applicable for finding the
squares of numbers ending with 5.
For Example: 45² = 20/25
1) Here the last digit is 5 hence 5 X 5 = 25
2) Previous digit is 4 and one more than the previous one is 5 and 4 X 5 = 20
3) Hence the final answer is 2025
Similarly we have,
35² = 12/25; 55² = 30/25; 95² = 90/25
These are just some of the sutras as propounded by Swamiji. A good practice of the Sutras will help us to master multiplication,
Division, Factorization, Quadratic Equations, Square roots, Cube root etc.
This technique acts as an AID in your regular educational process. It has proved to be very helpful to student community and

Life Skills and Work Place
Youth are considered as the most productive members of the
society, due to their physical and intellectual capacity. But it is
sad to recognize the fact that most of the youth are unable to
utilize their potential in an appropriate way due to lack of
guidance and motivation. Life skill helps the individual to
improve decision making skill, ability to take every thing in the
right sense and also improve their contributions to the
society.
These skills are nothing but abilities for positive behavior that
enable an individual to deal effectively with demands and
challenges every day life. It further encompasses thinking
skill, social skill and negotiation skill. It also helps the young
people to develop and grow into well behaved adults.
Life skill education is a basic learning need for all young
people. It will empower youth to understand & know what to
do in challenging situations. Various skills like leadership,
responsibility, communication, intellectual capacity, self
esteem, Interpersonal skill are part of developing Life Skills.
As predictable career paths have become extinct in most
organizations, managers are left to their own devices to
determine how to advance their careers. Some skills that any
budding manager ought to have and should be upgraded
regularly are:
People skills
These enable us to successfully interact with individuals
and groups. These are the interpersonal skills that enable the
ongoing exchange of information between people so
necessary to get work done.
People skills include:
· Basic communication, conflict resolution and listening
skills.
· Giving and receiving feedback, meeting management
and presentation skills.
· Helping skills, the capacity to motivate others, group
participation skills and working with wide ranging diversity
are also people skills.
Everything that has to do with effectively working in a wide
group of people in the innumerable of situations is people
skills. They are very evident and visible from the outside.
No word in the English language rhymes with "month", "orange", "silver" or "purple".

When someone has a high level of people skills, they are more
likely to get promoted to a higher level of authority than
someone less engaging.
Unfortunately, the combination of strong work and people
skills is not sufficient to ensure the success that today's
challenges require.
Another skill which is of utmost importance is:
Self skills
These are the intrapersonal competencies that set true
leaders apart from the masses. Self skills are essentially
invisible from the outside looking in. They are sensed or felt,
rather than observed. Intangible as they may be, self skills are
the core competencies that make such a profound difference
in the quality and depth of successful performers.
Self skills include:
1. A highly developed sense of self knowledge and
awareness.
2. Clearly understanding ones strengths and weaknesses as
well as an in-depth knowledge of ones personality, values,
biases and ambitions.
3. Conflict resolution styles, behavior in groups determined
by patterns established early in one's family and dealing
with authority.
4. The ability to intentionally choose ones behavior rather
than living on auto-pilot is a self skill.
Perhaps the most critical self skill is to be very clear about
personal wants and needs in any situation and to be able to
set those aside for the common good.
Blended with a high level of work and people skills, self skills
will take anyone to the height of their career.
Positive Thinking, Your Key to Success
Positive thinking brings inner peace, success, improved
relationships, better health, happiness and satisfaction. It
also helps the daily affairs of life move more smoothly, and
makes life look bright and promising.
Positive thinking is contagious. People around you pick
your mental moods and are affected accordingly. Think

Outward Bound
“Ravi! Chai de na, yaar!” I called out absently. I was at the
canteen, waiting for the rest of the “gang” to come. For us
college begins and ends at the canteen. We are married to the
college!
In the meanwhile, sipping on the tea I muse over the last one
and a half year spent at this campus. It just seemed like
yesterday, making a nervous entry onto Dr. VPF's PCMRD,
then CMRD. It had been quite a while since I last carried
notebooks and a heavy bag with books inside. The one thing
that made me rest my fears was the lush green scenery
around the college building.
Initially, I didn't make many friends and kept to myself. There
was nothing much happening at the college other than the
relay race by the faculty. It took a while for us new comers,
seniors and the brand new faculty to settle down.
Hopes were high, excitement was widespread. The “seniors”
& “juniors” did their best to bond well with each other despite
the changes taking place. But, we just about managed a
warm “hello!” once in a while. Soon it was exam time and the
1st semester of MBA passed in a blur. The 2nd semester began
with the sacred PUMBA Trophy. This was a melting pot for all
the management institutes. It was in fact here that the
“seniors” and the “juniors” became the CMRD-ians. Life at
CMRD had just begun! We did not even come close to
winning the Trophy but we had made great friends. Friends,
as they say, are like street lights, they may not make the
journey any shorter, but they brighten up the path. This is how
some of us landed in the 3rd semester and the rest had passed
out to make way for the next generation of CMRD The
PCMRD. Not to forget the fresh additions to the faculty team!
The college now was even better.
The new batch had been inducted and as tradition dictates,
the Teacher's Day celebrations were put in place by the first
years'. Then another ritual of the tradition was to be fulfilled.
The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

Talks of fresher's party were in the air. The 'freshers', moving
tentatively in the college, were eager to know what was in
store. The party date & theme was announced and the juniors
got ready with their “dates” for the evening. For the new lot,
life at PCMRD had already begun! October got the zeal and
oodles of energy to make “Shikhar” a grand success under
the meticulous eye of the faculty. The faculty too had come
within the “friends” bracket!
It was then that the realisation of leaving college struck for the
first time. We spent hours at the college. Not attending
classes in particular but yes, in college. The exam time
brought with it clusters of students occupying any possible
place in the college to figure out the course content. Come
project viva and we lost our appetite and sleep but managed
to sit through it...One Piece! This particular semester break
was a torture and we were eager for college to reopen.
The preparations for the Holy Trophy were in full swing. These
were the best 3 days of our lives! Sadly, we only almost won
the PUMBA Trophy. However, there was no time to brood over
it because soon, we got ready to bag 3 other Inter-collegiate
trophies in a row!
Now we are at the threshold to the bigger brighter world.
Getting into top gear to step out and make it big. But there are
also apprehensions about what we are going to leave
behind...
“It was a marathon of lectures today!” exclaimed a tired voice
and echoes of agreement followed. Everyone has come for
the evening dose of tea. It is late in the evening; the college is
deserted with life only at the canteen. Indeed, we were
married to the college and the canteen was our mistress!

Change a life before Requiem of A Dream!
Life! Such a small word! Isn't it? As many hearts, those many
feelings n those many meanings! Events, incidences,
situations, happenings, problems, failures, obstacles,
successes, achievements, winning, losing, relationships,
emotions, feelings, and.............DREAMS! Life is a dream!
Chased, lived and cherished! Find a person who has never
ever had a DREAM. Each one of us dreams. Some dream
small things, some dream a lot and some, Dream BIG. Some
dream when they are sleeping and some dream when they are
awake, eyes wide open! Some get easily what they dream,
some don't get it at all and some makes their dream, a Reality!
Ok, we all know this, right? Now, let us ask ourselves what
makes the difference? First is, we never asked such a question
before! Second, we never tried to find the answer! We know
the answer, yeah? Some will say it is destiny, some will deny
this n say it is up to us, some will say it is achieved with the help
of our near n dear ones n some of us will say it is the
combination of all these. Indeed, it is! A dream to become
reality, takes everything in....and around us.
Changes come and they go, what remains is the learning and
we call it experience! It is never a failure or success, it will
always be, A Learning, a lesson learnt! Every one of us goes
through some or the other experience, unique or regular but
what makes the difference is the learning! Some of us will
understand it because we have done it and we are doing it. We
have learnt the lessons and we are learning many with time.
But some of us don't learn. Why? Do you think it could be
their fault? Their negligence? Or can we say they could not
interpret it correctly? Nobody wants to fail! Nobody likes to
fail! Still people fail. The Ugly Truth!
What does each one of us do to succeed? We dream. We
imagine the ideal. We visualize the best. And we work towards
it. In pursuit of success, we are constantly under the influence
of our “ideal”, “best”. It can be a thing, it can be a person, it
can be anyone who inspires us, who supports us, who shakes
us up, who somehow makes us awake to realize our DREAM.
Some of us have such a person close to us physically; some of
us have it in our imaginations! Alexander the great had such a
person-Achilles, the great conqueror, but not physically!
Every time before going to the battle, Alexander used to
visualize how Achilles would have fought it. Who was Achilles
to Alexander? Can we say Achilles was his Mentor? The

risk and maximize success...
All young people have the potential to succeed in life and
contribute to society. All children have the potential to
succeed in life and contribute to society. However, not all
children get the support they need to thrive.
By all estimates, an astounding 17.6 million young people
nearly half the population of young people between 15 and 23
years of age live in situations that put them at risk of not living
up to their potential. Without immediate intervention by
caring adults, they could make choices that not only
undermine their futures, but, ultimately, end up being at the
other side of their fate.
It is said that “To err is human”, very true! Humans are
supposed to make mistakes, but they have the endowment of
correcting mistakes and not repeating them. Making mistake
is not wrong, is it? We all have made mistakes in our life, small
or big! Then why some people have to pay huge dividends for
their mistakes? Why someone does not get a second chance?
This is the fact that nobody remembers or nobody respects
the person who has made mistakes. Those people who kept
on ignoring the criticism about their mistakes and kept on
pursuing their dream, made it Big! Thomas Edison, Albert
Einstein, Wilber Right, Steve Jobs etc are the famous ones.
Einstein once said, “I thank those people who said no to me.
It's because of them I did those things myself. I would not have
done this without their denial.” Not everyone is like Einstein or
Alexander, but they have the potential, they have a heart to
take a beat for making their dream come true. What they
need is someone who can tell them, who can be by their side
when they are fallen back by their mistake and who can tell
them that there will always be a second chance!
Mentors have always been recognized as some of the most
important influences on a young person's life. We all know

this word called Mentor, right? But the fact is that a decade
ago the community at large was not aware of the term
mentoring.
This can be understood in the context of societal change.
First, changes in the familial structure in our society have left
today's youth with limited access to adults. Extended families
no longer form a core of adult relationships. Additionally,
families no longer live near one another; instead, visits with
relatives are often limited to special occasions. Additionally,
the urbanization has led to more crowded and more
dangerous environments for youth, where frequently
neighbours do not have the opportunity or desire to interact
with one another simply because they are total strangers.
Suffice it to say here that changes in society have made it
more and more difficult for youth to have access to natural,
spontaneous adult mentors.
There is a need for a caring guide, a wise advisor, a partner on
the journey, and a trusted friend. The one who can serve as a
mirror for the youth - showing them both who they are and
who they can become, the one who can help the youth feel
comfortable in their own skin and believe in their dreams but
at the same time exposing them to new opportunities and
modes of thinking, the one who will fulfill the gap of adult
relationship which is absent from many youth's life!
Treat a man as he is, he will remain so. Treat a man the way he
can be and ought to be, and he will become as he can be and
should be…! Powerful sentence isn't it but only when it is
brought alive.
Look around, and we will see where the today's youth asking
help is! Many times we will find them talking with their most
close friend/s, discussing how the world is, how it should be,
what could be done and what not! Can it not be an adult there
instead of a friend of their age? Can it not be an adult lending
help using his/her experience? Can't we avoid their dreams
from being shattered?
The majority of youth are probably not used to making
“appointments” to meet with adults. Many of them have never
seen an organizer or a diary. In addition, they are still very
much dependent on other people in their lives to get them

places or simply pass on phone messages. This might be
because they cannot understand the actual meanings hidden
behind the words or may find it irrelevant to their own world
which they have created. Or it may be because of the fear that
their faults will be brought forward, fear of laid down for their
mistakes. But somewhere in their mind they need someone
who will support them and will go back to the drawing board
rather than finding faults.
We learn so many concepts, so many phenomenons in
management like career planning, succession planning,
knowledge management etc. Is it merely for getting numbers
on a piece of paper? Is it only restricted to four walls of exam
hall? Helping a youth, precisely, mentoring a youth can make
his dreams come true. It can change someone's life!
Changing someone's life by mentoring, is it not a career
planning, is it not the knowledge sharing, why can't we call it
succession planning?
It is about believing in the unlimited potential of each and
every youth, about empowering youth, creating replicas of
our own ideal personalities!
Mentoring can be difficult. Relationships can bring up our
own insecurities; relationships require commitment and hard
work. Mentoring, just like any other relationship, is not always
easy. However, it is this relationship which can be the
foundation of someone's life!

Management, is it?
We call ourselves management students. We take admission
to learn 'management.' But do we in the real sense learn
management? Can management be taught? Marketing,
Finance, Human Resource, Operations, Systems,
Information Technology, International Business are all the
branches of Management which do us few insights in the
subject and which can be taught. But does the core essence
of management lie in teaching all of this?
It is generally observed that students doing their Masters in
Business Administration are the most mismanaged when it
comes to time, etiquettes, sticking to deadlines, following
rules and maintaining discipline. Why is it so? Do they get so
busy in the course that the real self management and self
discipline goes for a toss? It should not be the case. As
management students few things are expected from both-
the college and from the students as well.
When we join a management college, we get tied up in a lot of
'activities'. We forget our main objective behind doing an
MBA.
Why an MBA?

· For an increment.

There are many people with various objectives for doing an
MBA. It indeed is very necessary to know why one wants to do
an MBA. There should be one goal and the road to achieve it
should be well defined. No one knows where they see
themselves 10 year down the line, but at an MBA level we
should at least know what we want from our life. The short
term and the long term plans will help us achieve our
objectives. They should be well defined which will helps us to
know in which direction we need to work in. What might be
the probable hindrances, what needs utmost priority, and
what tasks are unimportant that should be neglected? Each
person has a different perspective and a different take on
things, but one needs a lot discipline behind doing things.
And by discipline I do not mean not having fun, but knowing
what one is doing and where it is taking him.

Top 10 Pointers for the Duties and Responsibilities of the
Management Students
1. PLAN THE SEMESTER.
Reality: “Events hai yaar. Pata nahi kya hoga?”
Expected: Each one of knows what the next 3 months have in
stored for us. Plan, chalk out a time- table and work
accordingly. Things would get a lot simpler with proper time
calculations, methodical study and in depth knowledge.
2. MANAGE TIME.
Reality: TIME nahi hai yaar! So many events, so many
assignments, so much write, how do we mange?
Expected: Manage time. Get to know the academic calendar.
There are people who in spite of doing so many things,
shouldering too many responsibilities, having such less time
in hand are absolutely intact with all their work. Think about
them and just go for it. Never start your work with a NO! It is
going to happen and do it to the best of your capacity.
3. STICK TO DEAD LINES.
Reality: “Ma'am was busy with this event!” “Sir I was a little
unwell.”
Expected: do not give unnecessary excuses and post pone
your work. If not done, confront the real reason. OWN up! Do
not get into the habit for running away from the dead line.
Your body and brain will get used to it. First time, second time,
third time and the chain will continue. Come what may, stick
to the DEAD LINES. You will curse laid back attitude later in
your life. Do not get used to it.
4. FOLLOW UP.
Reality: “I don't know ma'am, I had told him to collect the
assignments and give them to you. I don't know where he is?”
Expected: When you delegate some work to a person make
sure you follow up as well. Do not leave things half done.
Finish them so well that next time there arises no need to
challenge your work. Also when some task is given to you, do
not see how small or big that job is, do it so well that no one
could do it better that you.

5. BE PROACTIVE.
Reality: “Yaar let ma'am give the work first. Baad mein
dekhenge.”
Expected: “The very essence of leadership is that you have a
vision. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet”- Theodore M.
Hesburgh.
Do not wait for things to be told. Think, visualise, analyse the
best possible ways to do it and do them. Think beyond time.
Be it the simplest of task, see the end, do not leave any loop
holes in your work.
6. BE AWARE
Reality: “I don't know yaar. Paper bharne keliye kuch bhi likh
ke aa gaya”
Expected: One need not know everything. There is too
much to know in this world and out of it for a small human
brain. But do not let it be the reason for not knowing it. The
urge to know things, to learn, to explore should never fade off.
The fire of exploring things within should always be ignited.
Read a lot, discuss, have debates and arguments that will lead
to an increase in your knowledge. Never say NO to
knowledge. It is never a waste. Be technology savvy, learn a
lot, grow a lot, get to the core of things and you will enjoy you
work and you will enjoy.
7. LEARN TO ADD HUMOUR TO LIFE.
Reality: “woh mujhse aise kyun boli? I think she doesn't like
me. No manners at all!”
Expected: do not take life and yourself too seriously. Chill,
relax, enjoy and find time to have fun. Do not bother about
who said what and do not get in to its analysis. No one has
that much time. But by this I do not intend to say one gets the
right to say anything. Do not hurt anyone intentionally or
u n i n t e n t i o n a l l y, t r y a n d r e s o l v e a n y s o r t o f
miscommunications that have taken place. Life it too short to
crib, quarrel, cry and complain, enjoy every bit of it.
8. STICK TO THE CODE OF CONDUCT.
Reality:” Kaun daategaa? Who follows what has been made
'compulsory'?”
Expected: there are going to be many occasions when we feel
that there no one observing us, but in some or the other way
we are. Do not bother about who is doing what, you maintain
the code of conduct. Be the leader, other will follow.

9. BE THE LEADER
Reality: “No one is doing it, why should I?” attitude
Expected: Do not bother about what others think, do what
you feel is right. Be the leader in not only shouldering
responsibilities but also in making an impact. Be the initiator
so that people start following you and being like you. People
will talk- good or bad. Their job is to talk. Least bother about
what they say and do what you think is right.
10. MAKE MISTAKES.
Reality: “I am not getting in to this again. I do not want to
make mistakes. I fear.”
Expected: “TO ERR IS HUMAN, TO FORGIVE IS DEVINE.”
No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Our world
should not stop where we make mistakes. Do not walk away,
do not withdraw. Making mistakes is a part of learning and
exploring. The maximum mistakes one makes, the better he
gets aware of the working process. A person should fail, not
morally but to know where he went wrong. People are not
aware of the course of life their decisions are taking, but
mistakes make them realise that this was probably not right!
Hence why fear? Make mistakes, do not hide them- confront,
make it right and work your way out. When you make
mistakes at your college level, you make sure you do not
repeat them at your work place. It becomes simpler than.
College will give you a chance to make your mistakes right. In
a company, you do not know.
To sum up this long article I wish to say that consider your
college to be an organization or a company you are working
for, the professors- your bosses and the tasks- your work .
How would you have behaved, worked, acted or responded
then, do it here and everything would fall in place. Be
consistent in your work, do not fluctuate, try to raise the bar
every time and evaluate yourself truly. Let there be an
improvement in you than the previous month. Do not study.
Learn to the fullest and let MBA be not as a mere degree but
we walk out as true MBA's which no company will refuse to

A Year Since 26/11
26/11 the date, is strongly etched in our minds, as, one of the
most horrifying & saddening events was made to happen in
India's arguably most happening city 'MUMBAI'. It wasn't
something that just happened. But a tailor made plan to
shatter the people residing in Mumbai & the confidence they
possessed in the city. The attack was directed more towards
the minds of the societal public than just the city. The disaster
injected fear all around.
I call it 'a sheer shame on humanity'. It makes everyone to sit
& think, think hard what are we doing? & where are we
heading? An occurrence of such an event proves & justifies
the extent to which the 'human' as a 'being' has reached in
seeking materialistic pleasures. It's high time we stop the
blame game. Anyways, it provides no solution. In fact, it raises
the chances of another disaster being made to happen (may
be as revenge).
A year has passed. The city is back to its routine. People,
along with the city, have moved on. But the question is 'do we
have an option?' let us be very honest & practical, how much
& what all can you expect from a government? If one speaks
about protection, the question arises protection from whom?
The scenario is now not just restricted to Pakistan or a
particular community. It is about the mind frame of the
people. And till the time this mind frame does not chance, no
system on the entire planet, however efficient it may be, can

protect a person/city/country from such a sudden,
purposeful, disastrous event planned by the people itself.
The globe should be about people, & not at all about regions,
religions, races, colours, authorities, power, etc.
Unfortunately, in the practical scene, it is not so. And, when
given a thought, one can make out that it is going to be so,
given the cultural diversities, the imbalance in terms of power,
m o n e y, a u t h o r i t y, p r o g r e s s , e t c a m o n g t h e
nations/people/cities/provinces.
The root cause is corruption & that too at high levels. It made
the occurrence/conduction of the operation (read 26/11)
fairly easy for the planners. Fingers can be pointed & the
system can be blamed but who knows (sitting at home &
commenting) what it is, to run, a nation like India. The better
options seems to just 'ACCEPT' what happened & 'HOPE'
that something like that never happens in the future. This
might seem like a very passive approach, but life becomes
much easier when one learns to accept the facts &
happenings around. Also, hope is the only thing one can rely
on, given the fact that most of the things in & around us, are
beyond our control. This is a hard-to-digest fact of life.

for Individual Investors
Personal finance or managing one's finances is quite a hot
topic nowadays. Investors are becoming more informed day
by day about their investments & investment options are
widening as new investment avenues are adding to invest. Viz.
Stocks & Shares, Financial Derivatives, Commodity
derivatives, Currency derivatives, Bonds, G-Sec's, ULIP,
Mutual Funds, Real estate, F.D's of Banks & companies etc.
Definition: - Personal finance is the application of the
principles of finance to the monetary decisions of an
individual or family unit. It addresses the ways in which
individuals or families obtain, budget, save, and spend
monetary resources over time, taking into account various
financial risks and future life events.
Why Personal finance?
Personal Finance is extremely important & every individual
must devote time in understanding & managing personal
finances. Investors must be aware about different investment
avenues & options where they can get their money
maximized. Goals like “retire at age 55 with a personal net
worth of 1 Cr”, “Buy a new house in 5 years can be achieved
through persistence & discipline”. It is not magic but simple
mathematics.
Personal financial planning
A key component of personal finance is financial planning, a
dynamic process that requires regular monitoring and re-
evaluation. In general, it has five steps:
1. Assessment: It provides the picture of financial health. A
personal balance sheet lists the values of personal assets
(e.g., car, house, clothes, stocks, bank account), along
with personal liabilities (e.g. credit card debt, bank loan,
mortgage).
2. Setting goals: Short term and Long term goals needs to
be set. Setting financial goals helps direct financial
planning. Ex. retire at age 55 with a personal net worth of
1 Cr.
3. Creating a plan: The financial plan details how to
accomplish your goals, also carving out investment
strategy. Ex. reducing unnecessary expenses, increasing
one's employment income, or investing in the stock
market.

from professionals such as accountants, financial

Investment management or Portfolio management is the
professional management of various securities (shares,
bonds and other securities) and assets (e.g., real estate), to
meet specified investment goals for the benefit of the
investors.
Investment Avenues
Equity (Stocks or Shares):-
A stock market / share market is a public market (a loose
network of economic transactions not a physical facility or
discrete entity) for the trading of company stock at an agreed
price; these are securities listed on a stock exchange as well
as those only traded privately. Warren Buffet explains one
basic rule for equity investments. “You don't just buy shares of
a particular company,you are buying a part of ownership. i.e
you are buying businesses”.
Investment in equities is always the best option if one have
the long term horizon. Ex. BSE sensex having base value 100
in 1979 currently trading at 17500 levels. i.e. 1750% return.
Nifty having base value of 1000 is currently trading at 5250.
i.e. return of 525%. No other investment avenue can give you
such an astonishing returns.(apart from gambling of course)
Ex. Shares of Reliance Industries, Infosys Technologies, HUL,
L & T etc are listed in NSE & BSE.
Derivatives (Financial Derivatives & Commodity derivatives)
:-
Derivatives are the collective name used for a broad class of
financial instruments that derive their value from other
financial instruments or commodities (known as the
underlying), events or conditions.
Type of derivatives is Future, Options, Forwards, and Swaps.
Ex. If one wants to earn income through speculation in nifty's

movement then he can gain by buying or selling future
contracts by keeping desired margin in his account.
Derivatives are riskier financial instruments as compared to
equity & can give you huge profit or huge loss as per your
trade's fate.
Ex. Nifty Futures, Nifty option (Call & Put), RIL futures, Gold
Futures etc.
Mutual Funds:-
A mutual fund is a professionally managed type of collective
investment scheme that pools money from many investors
and invests it in stocks, bonds, short-term money market
instruments, and/or other securities. Fund managers deduct
all the expenses like initial expenses,fund management
charge,switching charge etc & invest the rest ammount as
per the fund's objective. Mutual Fund is an effective tool of
investment for beginners but one need to pay for it.
Insurance (ULIP):-
Unit Linked Insurance Plan (ULIP) provides for life insurance
where the policy value at any time varies according to the
value of the underlying assets at the time. ULIP is life
insurance solution that provides for the benefits of protection
and flexibility in investment. The investment is denoted as
units and is represented by the value that it has attained called
as Net Asset Value (NAV). ULIP's offer great product which has
characteristics of Insurance + Investment but they are
expensive in nature as compared to other financial
instruments.
Real Estate
Real estate is a legal that encompasses land along with
improvements to the land, such as buildings, fences, wells
and other site improvements that are fixed in location
immovable. Land is becoming scarce resource now hence
investment in real estate is sure to yield good returns in future.
Ex. Purchasing a Flat in kothrud area hoping for capital
appreciation in future, Buying a Land in Mulshi & selling it
later for profit etc.
Debt Market (Bonds, Debentures, G- Sec's etc,)

The Kraya Aroha Story
Life is uncertain and humans are the most unpredictable
living beings. We can never make out what is going on in
someone's mind. The same happened with us when we
participated in Sinhgad Institute's “Krayaaroha- A Marketing
Fair”. The way we participated in this event is an amazing
story.
It all started when we all (i.e. Swapnil [Bugs], Prasad,
Lavanya, Vineet & myself) were participating in various inter
college events. At that time bugs came up with the idea of
participating in “Krayaaroha”.
At that time we all were participating in other events. So we
told bugs that we will definitely participate in 'Krayaaroha'
when we get time from other events. We were doing well I
Vamnicom and Alana, so we didn't want to loose such a
golden opportunity. Meanwhile bugs had taken the details of
the event from sarvajit.
Krayaaroha was a two day event where there were 20 teams
from various colleges. Each team had had to sell various
products of base price Rs. 700 on the first day. On the second
day there was a logo identification quiz, followed by Sell the
Hell (Mad Ads) & presentation by each team related to the
strategies used for selling the products on the first day.
We selected the products and sent the list to sarvajit on 19th
Feb. Though we had sent the list of products to sarvajit, still
we were not sure whether we will be able to participate in the
event. Then on 21st Feb Lavanya, Vineet, Prasad & Bugs were
at Alana Institute to participate in some games. There they all
were deciding the further participation in any other inter
college event. Suddenly bugs reminded everybody about
Krayaaroha. Then they all decided to go and register for the
event.
Bugs and Prasad went to Sinhgad immediately and
registered our names. The team limit for each college was 5
members per team. The members for Krayaaroha were
Prasad, Bugs, Lavanya, Vineet and I. Meanwhile Shruti, who
came back from Latur on 22nd Morning, got the news that we
all were going in Sinhgad for Krayaaroha. She was interested
to come with us. So we took her along with us.
Then came the big day, 23rd Feb. I & Bugs were the first to
reach Sinhgad at 8:45am. We went & met Bugs Sister

'Snehal'. Bugs told her to visit our stall and bring as much
friends as she can. Then Shruti & Prasad came at 9:10 am.
We then had our breakfast in Sinhgad canteen. Then we got
ourselves registered at the counter and took our stall number.
Our stall number was '1'. Meanwhile Lavanya & Vineet were
the last to come at 9:40 am.
At 9:45 am we were given our products along with our table.
Also each team had a team co-ordinater to explain the rules
from time to time. Our team co-coordinator was Harshal
Ahire. We started arranging all the things. Lavanya & Shruti
started making Posters for our stall, while Prasad, Vineet & Me
we were blowing balloons & trying to make the stall more
attractive. Bugs had gone to keep the cold drink bottles at
canteen as the cold drink bottles were not that cold as we had
expected.
At 10:00 am, the chief guests arrived and lit the Diyas which
was followed by singing of Saraswati Vandana. After that we
were explained the rules of the day. Then at sharp 10:30am we
were told to sell our products. Our tough time had started, as
no one from us had ever done such hard core marketing. It
was really very hard to attract customers.
Lavanya & Vineet went in one direction while I & Bugs went in
other direction to demonstrate our products & market our
stall. Shruti & Prasad were on the stall along with Harshal. For
the first 5-10 minutes, I & bugs were finding it very difficult to
convince people, but somehow we managed to bring a few
customers.
Then after 1 hour we were given a laptop skin worth Rs. 500,
which was a mute product & we had to sell it. All of us tried
hard to sell the laptop skin but nobody was interested it.
After half an hour we were given another mute product,
Domex Toilet Cleaner. Our sales was very slow and above that
this mute product just made us bite our nails as it was very
difficult to sell the product in a college. Lavanya and Vineet
tried very hard for around half an hour to sell the product, but
all the efforts were in vain. Meanwhile we were given the next
mute product which was Prick wick wafers biscuit.
Now we decided to sell these mute products in Combination.
We kept an offer that if anyone purchases Domex he/she will
get prick wick free with it. Then bugs went and brought the

cold drinks from the canteen. We served our customers with
cold cold drinks. As the students were coming to our stall for
having cold drink, we made them purchase our other
products.
Then at 1:40 pm we were given our last mute product, a
packet of homemade Chakli. Here One of bug's friend who
too had a stall came & purchased the packet of Chakli while
we purchased his packet of Chakli. Finally we sold our last
Product which was a Rexona deodorant.
At 2:00 pm we all winded up the stall the stall and went to have
our lunch in Sinhgad canteen. We left Sinhgad at around 4:20
pm. We then came PCMRD and met Prof. Amber, our
Marketing faculty. We told him about our experience in
Sinhgad. We then informed about him about the presentation
we had the next day. He gave us guidelines to be followed
while preparing for the presentation and logo quiz. We all sat
in PCMRD till 7:00 pm and prepared the presentation.
The next morning Lavanya and Vineet were the first to reach
Sinhgad at 9:00 am. I, Prasad, Bugs & Shruti came at 9:30
pm. At 10:00 pm, all the participants gathered in the seminar
hall. The logo identification quiz was the first competition of
the day. It started at 10:30 am. Bugs & Prasad participated in
it. They did well, but had to compete with other college who
were equally tough. They answered the questions correctly
which resulted into a tie breaker round. We were all very
nervous and sitting at the edge of our seats during the tie
breaker round. And finally we won the tie breaker.
Then we had a lunch break for half an hour. After that quiz we
had the mad ads competition. We had to select our product
from chits and product turned out to be TOOTHPICK & we
were provided 15 minutes for preparing the ad &/or radio
jingle. After 15 minutes we presented our advertisement.
Lavanya, Prasad and I acted in the ad, while Bugs & Vineet
displayed the poster displaying our product. We performed
well but I forgot some lines. We were disappointed with it. Still
we didn't loose hope and started preparing for the
presentation. Some colleges performed very well at Mad Ads.
At 4:00 pm, the presentations started. Ours was the first team
to present. Lavanya & Prasad had made the presentation very

well. They were asked various questions to which they
answered very well. They were asked about the laptop skin.
Also in the presentation they had added photos of the dustbin
which we had kept for disposing waste. One by One each
college started their presentation.
Tension was increasing in everybody's mind. We all had
performed very hard in every part of the event. We were
expecting that we would win something. But at the same time
we were thinking that maybe we will not win but still we kept
our fingers crossed ,because as they say “Expectations hurt',
we didn't wanted to feel like losers. We had participated to
learn & experience new things about Marketing.
At 6:30 pm the results were announced & the prize
distribution ceremony began. We were the second runners up
in KRAYAAROHA. We were Given 5 complementary laptop
skins for performing well. Also were given health vouchers of
the gym ABS along with Rs. 1000 cash. We were given the
certificates by one of the former Director of PCMRD, Shaikh
Sir. He was very happy with the fact that we participated &
won. He talked with us later for 10 minutes.
Then after the conclusion of the prize distribution ceremony.
We all went to the nearby Canteen of sinhagad. There we all
had some cheese sandwiches. Then we went to the Nescafe
Shop and had some awesome Coffee there. Finally we left
Sinhgad at 8:30 pm. That two days were the days when we
learnt those things which no book or no professor would ever
teach us. It was a great experience for all of us.
Next day we came to college and everyone congratulated us
and it felt good. It was like seeing the world with new eyes.
Everything felt jubilant. And I thought even though
participation is important 'It makes a difference when you
win.'
Well that was the story of Krayaaroha. I hope U enjoyed

Life gives us many opportunities, but how to make the most
of them depends on us. M.B.A. as a course has been taken up
by many, but how to make the most of it a very few know. As
they say when you are thrown in the pool; you automatically
learn how to swim. In similar way, participating in
competitions in which one has least idea of the winning
criteria and in turn wins, it indeed is a matter of pride to
the college! The echoes of the college slogans are in the air.
The students of P.C.M.R.D., who have been gaining
accolades in each and every competition have made us all
very proud. They have not at all restricted M.B.A. as a course
of study but actually tried its practical relevance. From
business plan to street play, poster making to dance, business
quiz to face painting, the students have been behind honing

and challenging their managerial skills. I can still feel the
energy and enthusiasm amongst the students, the moment
any competition brochure is put up on the bulletin board, the
students start planning. Their leadership skills, planning and
organising and above all the spirit of winning the competition
is reflected in their attitude. The unity and energy, which is
major contributor for a great winning spirit, that students
possess is stunning.
It is still very fresh in all our minds. We were done with our
university examinations and as expected most of the
students went back to their home towns. The major events,
awaited by the all colleges are generally lined up in the
months of January and February. The ones here were
wondering that the curiosity, energy and the enthusiasm
instilled in us by our seniors is going nowhere and how are we
going manage to achieve the trophies without major
planning. No one turned up to college till the first week of
January and bang the events began! It was indeed an
emotional moment as to see how few students who did not
even participate in any event were continuously co-ordinating
through their cell phones so that the college does not lose out
on the point rate system. The running around, the sleepless
nights, staying up late in the college, last minute entries,
faculty involvement and support, the rehearsals, the
cheering, the fun, the craze and the difference of opinion, it
really made the events worth enjoying. The fun and the
support one experiences during such events is par excellence.
The morale of the students is so high at that very point of time,
that it is not the individual benefit that matters to them. No
one feels bad if their names were withdrawn for the best of
college's benefit. It is the name of the college that carries
more weightage, what matters to each and every student
sitting there. No emotional hassles, no ego out bursts. Yes
one does feel bad as everyone wants to participate but that is
momentary. The feeling of winning an event cannot be
expressed in words. The happiness and the confidence
quotient reach its maximum. And if after all this, when our
college is leading till the end of the final results, but fails to
win, the sportsman spirit and the feeling of given their 100% is
mind blowing. Winning is not important, they say,
participating is. But one really gets surprised when they see
their college's flag in the top position amongst all other

Alumni Meet 2010

A Report

The year 2010 marks the completion of 25 glorious years of
Dr. Vikhe Patil Foundation's Pravara Centre for Management,
Research & Development. The alumni meet was organized
on the 23rd of January, and the formation of the alumni
association was planned for this occasion. Students had
contacted the alumni via telephone calls and emails. We
received an overwhelming response from the alumni.
This year the chief guest of the alumni meet was Mr. Narendra
Karale. Among the invited, 120 of the alumni attended the
programme.
The meet was opened with the address by Prof. Manoj
Narawade, Secretary PCMRD. Prof. Ajit Tawde, Advisor to
PCMRD then addressed the meet. The alumni association
was formed. The core committee was formed which
comprises of seven members.
This was followed by the Director, Prof. Sunil Kumar's address
to the alumni. The certificates were handed over to the
winners of case study competition held at HNIMR. The
General Secretary Dhiraj Fiske shared the student's thoughts
with the alumni. The occasion was marked by several cultural
events prepared and performed by our management
students.

· Solo Dance
A few of the alumni shared their valuable experiences at
several occasions throughout the meet. The students found
the whole experience very inspiring. The function ended on
an upbeat mood with all the alumni joining the students on
the dance floor.
At 9.00 pm the alumni were treated to a delicious dinner
during which the students had a wonderful chance to interact
with them. A lot of experiences were shared & the students
could get a lot of valuable advice.

Leadership In Business
A F
s managers we are entrusted with providing fair direction,
counseling and evaluation for the benefit of our team
members and organization. I have found that employee
performance and loyalty is in direct proportion to the amount of
respect and support given. Especially during the most challenging
times when we all tend to enter into the "fight or flight" response.
Treating others the way you would like to be treated yourself is a
good 'rule of thumb'. Try to check all the facts before making a
response, and do it in person and in private when coaching
improvements. Self help pioneer Dale Carnegie said that when you
want to give praise, do it in writing and tell the world ... and when you
want to coach an improvement, do it verbally and in private, and
may I add 'using a kind voice'.
Always try to think about how your interaction will pave the road
towards future improved relations (avoiding blame or judgment).
Remember, that we all made choices (however flawed) believing
they served us best at that time.
Assume that whatever you write, e-mail or otherwise express will end
up being heard or read by the people affected by the message. So try
to be as positive as possible with the future goals in mind.
When deciding to be "tough" or "kind", try to be kind. Somehow just
having that intention will produce the best results in the end. And no
matter how crafty or logical our reasoning may be, the results
usually end up poorly if we try to take advantage of another person.
Even if no one finds out, the most important person already knows
and that person will suffer a reduced self-esteem. That person, of
course, is you.
When it comes to money and business, this message can
sometimes be forgotten; here is a personal story:
I am a rental property owner. Last spring a tenant, who had signed to
remain until the end of August, told me that she wanted to move out
at the end of the month for personal reasons. By the letter of our
lease agreement, I could have insisted she stay or demand payment
for the remaining 4 months. I was torn for several weeks between
what seemed to make sense from a business point of view (insist on
honoring the lease terms ... fearing no one would want to rent in the
summer) and what seemed like the kind thing to do.
In the end, I just did what felt right and released her from the lease,
trusting that things would work out. In gratitude, she paid for an
extra month as compensation for the early leave. Then, just a week
prior to the end of that paid month I found another tenant at an even
higher rental rate. I smile to this day knowing that somehow our best
intentions do pay "even in the business world"!
So, try to trust in what feels right inside, especially during those
challenges we all face.

India Poised for 2020
inancial turmoil of 2008-09 was a nightmare for almost every
Developed and Developing country. It had posed a big
challenge to a very own fundamentals of Capitalist and some
of the largest Economies in the world. As far as developed countries
are concerned their priorities, problems and way to tackle them
were different. India being one of the Fastest Emerging Economies
in the world had its own set of priorities and problems.
Ours is considered to be the robust and fundamentally strong
economy in the world. Which is highly driven by the domestic
consumption? Today we have two basic things to take care of
managing the sustainable growth momentum which we have
critically achieved over a period of time after 1991 and providing the
robust infrastructure for the future growth (which in turn will result in
the India becoming worlds largest Economy by 2020).
As we have successfully survived the slowdown where some of the
Governments of developed countries had to come ahead and
Bailout their so called “ Too Big to Fail ” companies. All the
Economic indicators seems to be in India's favour (except the
continuously rising food inflation and Fiscal Deficit where Govt's
planned and unplanned expenditure is more than its revenues,
income.) our hirings are coming back on track, it is special to
mention here that domestic companies as against their foreign
counterparts are leading the march. Where companies like Infosys,
TCS and various Government owned PSUs like SBI, ONGC are
hiring good numbers. Our Index of Industrial Production is
continually growing since last two quarters, export oriented units are
doing well with the help of the stimulus package provided by the
Central Govt. According to a quarterly data released by the Reserve
Bank of India, Indian Economy in the coming financial year 2010-11
is projected to grow at 7.0-7.5%.
Various international companies are looking at India as a potential
Service Provider in the areas like BPO, KPO and more recently Legal
Process Outsourcing. The recent Health Care Bill passed by the US
wherein every US citizen is required to have a health and casualty
insurance will bring a lot of work in India as it involves a lot of
processing and legal processes to be done by the individual before
getting the policy, the point to mention here is that US companies
would not be having better option than India which provides cheap
and quality work in the stipulated time frame.. But at the same time
this opportunity is coming with a lot of challenges - supply of skilled
workforce to back the work which will not only be the cost effective
but of better quality and delivered on time will be the key to lead the
competition. As we have to compete with some of the emerging
service providers of the world China, Philippines countries which are
considered to be as cost effective as India. As Charles Darwin has
rightly put that “Survival of the fittest”.

Rotaract Club
Rotaract Greeting!
Friends have always been teasing me “The first lady”,
“Rotaract majha dharma aahe…” & so on.
But today when I was told to write an article on Rotaract I fell
short of words. I really did not understand what to write. It is
hard to summarize the activities of such an esteemed,
worldwide institution in just two pages.
This year the Rotaract Club of CMRD enters the third year and
has really evolved as a club from being a dormant club to a
well known active club.
Rotaract Club of CMRD saw its charter presentation
ceremony on 20th of October,2007. This initiative was taken
by former President Rtr. Nikhil Lokhande with the support
from all the faculties of Dr. Vikhe Patil Foundation's Pravara
Centre for Management Research & Development. The
parent (sponsor) club for RC-CMRD is Rotary Club of
Kothrud, Pune. The parent Rotary club guides the Rotaract
club in its functioning & helps in planning its activities.
RC-CMRD is an institute based club exclusively for the MBA
students of Dr. Vikhe Patil Foundation's Pravara Centre for
Management Research and Development, Pune. It is a part of
Rotaract District.
This club aims at overall professional development of the
members. Because pursuing an MBA is not only about
gaining the academic knowledge but is also about grooming
an individual.
Club works as an organization in its own. It has a Board of
Directors. It consists 13 Board members among which five
are the core team members- The President of the club, the
Vice- President, the Secretary, the Treasurer & the Sergeant-
at-arms. Apart from this the Board, the team consists other 8
Board members namely- the Director without Portfolio,
Director-Finance, Director- Professional development,
Director- Community Service, Director- International Service,
Director- Public Relation, Director- Administration, Director-
Club Affairs & Events.
This B.O.D. pattern helps the students to understand &
prepare for the hierarchy that a manager has to follow in an
organization. The activities of the club are carried out in four
different areas i.e.; Club service, Community service,
professional development and International Service. The
activities undertaken in these four areas are planned &

In the year 2007-08 when Rotaract club started under the
leadership of Rtr. Nikhil Lokhande, there were activities
undertaken with respect to professional development where
in seminars of eminent corporate speakers were organized.
As the rotaractors were now prepared to enter the District
3131, Rtr.Indraneel Kulkarni, the then President, brought the
club to new heights. Activities were undertaken in all the four
areas successfully. The major events being the 'Nirmalaya
Kalash' during Ganapati Visarjan, Tilgul donation on the eve
of Makarsankranti, blood donation, tree plantation & Suss
village adoption program which became a tradition. Thus, the
club made an impact in the district.
The tradition was carried forward in the present year by Rtr.
Ashwini Kadam, President, with the support of the B.o.D,
members & the newly inducted rotaractors from the first year.
The year kick started by pioneering the 'Swine Flu Awareness
Campaign' in Pune in co-ordination with the Parent Rotary
Club. We also won the 'Highest participation Award' at the first
Intercity Fellowship (ICF) event. RC-CMRD also made its
presence felt internationally by attending the International
Rotaract Conference “Rotasia” where one of our members
Rtr.Abhishek Bandodhkar made it to the final rounds of Mr.
Rotasia competition.
In the area of community service, various events like “old
clothes donation” to the flood struck areas of Andhra
Pradesh, Polio dose Campaign with parent Rotary Club, visit
to orphanage, Road Star project where drivers who follow
traffic rules were felicitated along with the traditional events of
'Nirmalaya Kalash', Blood donation drive. For the first time in
PCMRD 'Traditional day' was successfully celebrated as a
Rotaract activity.
RC-CMRD has been successful in creating its identity in Pune
& also in other cities, making a mark in the group of institution
based Rotaract Clubs in the city.
Today, RC-CMRD symbolizes group of enthusiastic
management students ready to take up new activities in all
dimensions in the society. We indeed are 'Creative Minds
Ready to Deliver.'[C.M.R.D.]

An entrepreneur is a person who is willing and able to convert
a new idea or invention into a successful innovation. Given
entrepreneurship's potential to support economic growth
and social cohesion, it is need of the hour to develop a culture
of entrepreneurial thinking. PCMRD believes that there is an
opportunity today to inspire and prepare new and future
entrepreneurs, to help them nurture their dreams. The
journey- even to earn a market share- is paved with difficulties
but not at all impossible. The process of identifying an
opportunity, initiating a venture and growing a business
requires learning, understanding, adaptation and skills.
PCMRD is a registered member of National Entrepreneurship
Network (NEN). Various activities are undertaken throughout
the year to hone the Entrepreneurial skills of the students. The
Lead faculties for PCMRD - Swayam are Prof. Anagha Kalay
and Prof. Minal Wagh and the Patron is Director Prof. Sunil
Kumar.
The Entrepreneurship Development Cell aptly named as
“Swayam“, builds relationship with the industry by having
continuous guest lectures, panel discussions that enhances
the overall knowledge base of the students by going well
beyond the prescribed curriculum. This enables them to
hone their core competency so as to thrive on the cutting
edge of market competition.
Some activities conducted during 2009-10:
1. Guest Sessions by Eminent entrepreneurs
2. “Kala Kriti” & “Samvardhan” were two ideas born
during the intra College fest “Shikhar” - that would
encourage students to be creative and learn how to
handle businesses on a micro level. Kala Kriti
encouraged students creativity to sell merchandise
created by them viz., food, clothes, paintings, greeting
cards, envelopes etc. Samvardhan worked around
creating awareness on the carbon foot print i.e. saving
the earth.
3. 2-Day State Level Seminar successfully conducted
wherein first time entrepreneurs shared their knowledge
and experience with all students.

· From the Sratch (Company Formation):
Every good Company needs a good business. Every good
business starts with two things: a good idea and a robust
business plan. The PCMRD Swayam Company Formation
Competition provided researchers who had ideas with
commercial potential skills, knowledge and support needed
to develop a first-rate business plan for Company Formation.
This was provided through expert judges like Mrs. Shubhada
Joshi, Director Girikand Travels Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. Rohan
Adhalakha, Research Associate (Finance) Knowledge
Horizon E-Learning Pvt. Ltd. Pune.
· Panel Discussion:
PCMRD Swayam had held a Panel Discussion on
entrepreneurship by a group of industry experts which helped
in inculcating the spirit of entrepreneurship among the
students. These experts educated the students in their
preparations to become an entrepreneur & satisfied their
queries regarding the same. The panel experts were Mr. Ketan
Deshpande, Chief Editor FUEL Career Magazine & Founder
Chairman Friends Union for Energising Lives (FUEL) and Mr.
Prathamesh Nirgudkar, President Mudra Foundation & MD
Explorations Pune, who were a great help for the audience.
· War of the Words (Debate Competition):
The purpose of this debate competition was to create
awareness among the students about entrepreneurship &
various options available to them as an entrepreneur. This
also helped in the development of personality and
communication skills of the students. It was also the
endeavour to sensitize the students with the topical issues
and create awareness on societal and other national
concerns regarding entrepreneurship. The judge for this
event was Mr. Akshay Kulkarni, PCMRD Alumni.
· Movie Screening:
The movie 'Pursuit of Happyness' was hosted in the institute
which helped create an atmosphere of change, inspired, and
provoked discussion among the budding entrepreneurs. This
movie screening gave us a chance to test the students on
what they learned from the movie by asking them questions

marketing skills & propel their dream of being an
entrepreneur. The stalls were judged on the basis of various
factors like hygiene, marketing activities, product innovation
etc. by our in-house faculties.
· Stalwarts (Presentations):
During the event, we had presentations on the 'Dimensions to
entrepreneurship' by students of PCMRD. These
presentations focused on the emerging issues faced by the
entrepreneurs & helped in throwing light on the paradigm
shift the world of entrepreneurship has witnessed in recent
times. The judge for the event was our in-house faculty, Mr.
Ambar Beharay.
· Splash (Poster making competition):
The event not only focused on academics, but also gave
ample opportunities to the students to showcase their
creativity. The poster making competition was the platform
which encouraged the students to spread awareness about
entrepreneurship & opportunities for budding entrepreneurs
in India. This was in sync with the theme of the NEN E-Week &
helped in propagating its central idea. The posters were
judged by experts from industry & were awarded accordingly.

· Awareness Rally:
Swayam PCMRD held a rally to educate people about the
issues concerning the environment & how to create a better
tomorrow by following simple habits of hygiene &

challenges lying for the budding entrepreneurs. Also it helped
in initiating a discussion on the contemporary issues faced by
the business & economy through academic & research
studies. It provided a platform for Research papers from
corporate, academicians, research scholars & students.
· Wealth from Waste:
Our environment today is facing the threat of ever increasing
waste which in absence of proper & effective waste
management could result in environmental disasters. To
focus on this issue, Swayam PCMRD had initiated the 'Wealth
from Waste' campaign. There are treatments which can turn
the waste into wealth for us. Easy methods of turning waste
papers, plastic bags, cardboards etc. into useful things are
today available & the same need proper focus & attention of
the public. To spread awareness about this, Swayam
organised a session on 'Wealth from Waste' on 13th February,
2010. Industry experts & students together got a chance to
witness the various processes as this field can turn out to be
an avenue for starting a venture. The guests for this event
were Mr. Sumedh Bapat & Mr. Srinivas Kasulla, Founders of
Green Leaf Energies Pvt. Ltd. They also judged a competition
based on the same.

A Report on
State Level Seminar
What a state level seminar could be like? All the first year
students were in a dilemma. Never faced any state level
seminar before, so this question dwindled in minds till we all
actually witnessed it.
The theme of seminar was “Doing Business in Maharashtra -
An Uphill Task” & indeed it was an uphill task to present any
views on the diversified state of Maharashtra. The seminar
was graced by the presence of eminent guest speakers from
various sectors which mainly focused on IT, Manufacturing &
Service sectors.
The Chief Guest for this Seminar was Dr. B.V. Sangvikar (HOD
PUMBA).
Dr. B. V. Sangvikar shared his views on the strengths of the
Global Economic Environment and how to apply the same
knowledge for Maharashtra region.
It was a great moment for the students who were going to
present research papers for the first time, as their detailed
efforts were going to be showcased through the papers. The
research paper was oriented in such a manner that the
students could gain some insights for doing business. And
also they could realize the challenges faced by the
entrepreneurs in Maharashtra.
The guest speakers also shared their experiences of the
challenges they faced in setting up their own enterprises. The
manufacturing sector was represented by Mr.Nihar Shah the
Founder Director at Silver Bright (an automotive components
manufacturer).He is also the CII National Co Chair Young

The IT sector was represented by Mr. Dhiraj Khot, Director

Interactive session with respect to the IT sector. The overall
perspective of all the speakers reflected that “to enhance the
glory of Maharashtra & to take the pride to next level,
reforms need to be constructed to get best talent pool
from all over country rather than limiting on regional
forces”.

was the video designed by a first year student Mr. Pankaj
Dhakare.”
In all it was a great opportunity for all of us to gain some worth
knowledge about the scenario in the state. Even the budding
entrepreneurs got an insight about the various issues in
different sectors. The platform of state seminar gave us an
impetus to manage further events at a larger scale.
At the end of the session the students were presented with
certificates for their achievements in various fields through
the hands of director Mr. Sunil Kumar.

A Report on National Seminar
At PCMRD we sincerely believe in taking education to new
heights and take education beyond the four walls of the
classroom and explore our untapped potential and get the
best of students and thereby prepare them to tackle the
corporate world.
It is with this intention that we organized a National Seminar
on “Challenges & Strategies for the Indian Industry in the
Emerging Global Economic Scenario” on 09th, 10th and 11th
February 2010 at Yashada, Ganeshkhind Road, Pune
The main objective of seminar was to analyse the current
economic situation and identify potential opportunities &
challenges. The main aim of the seminar was to get on a
common platform the academia and Industry together and
thereby initiate a discussion on the contemporary issues
faced by the business and economy.
The Seminar consisted of many eminent personalities from
the field of science, Finance, Marketing and HR
Day 1
The event kick started with the address by Padmashri Dr. A.
S. Pillai - Distinguished Scientist and CCRD- DRDO, CEO&
MD of Brahmos Aerospace Delhi.
It was a rare opportunity for all of us to have Padmashri Dr A S
Pillai who shared his valuable thoughts of how transformation
of India happened through ages. He spoke about the
available natural resources, bio diversity and human
resources as an asset.
These are the ones who have found opportunities and
incentives lying under the recession period and have utilized
the same optimally
And In the end we concluded by a dance form as a depiction
of PCMRD's strong belief in the creating and grooming the
spirit of entrepreneurship in every student of PCMRD

Our next speaker for the day was Dr. Chandra Viswanathan-
Sr. Vice President, Regenerative medicine; Reliance Life
Sciences who addressed us all on “Regenerative Medicine-
the vanguard of 21st century”.
Dr. Anil Lamba, Director Lamcon was our next speaker for
the day.
He emphasized on how low interest rates all over the world are
now impacting our interest rates in India.

It started with Hon'ble speaker Padmashree Mr. Vijay
Bhatkar, Chairman ETH Ltd. wherein he stated that India is
already on its way to becoming a Global leader
The educational reforms that Mr. Kapil Sibal, the education
minister has proposed are revolutionary and would enable us
in creating many more knowledge based individuals.
He also conceptualized the journey of India from Brain in the
drain to Brain Drain, Brain Gain and Brain Chain.
The last speaker for the day was Mr. Prashant Ahir - Head HR
(CVBU) TATA Motors Ltd who spoke about the role of HR as a
strategic business partner, he shared his personal
experiences to illustrate how he could make a significant
difference in his organization by reducing costs and making
people more productive
Paper presentations were followed by the research scholars
post each speaker sessions.
The Seminar was quite successful and it was very well
appreciated by students and Faculty. Faculty lead for this
initiative was Prof. Minal Wagh.

40 Industrial Visits
A Report
Batch - I

DATE: - 24 December, 2009
The day began with full zest and enthusiasm amongst the
students of P.C.M.R.D. who were all set for an industrial visit at
SANY Heavy Industries Limited at Chakan on the 23rd
December 2009. The batch comprising of 18 students left
the college by 9.30 am from the campus itself. All the
students were well prepared with the company history and its
profile. Faculty lead for this initiative was Prof. Angha Kaley.
As the batch reached there, they were warmly welcomed
Shailesh, the Operations Head of the company. The entire
plant was shown in detail which was backed by a lot of
information exchange. The queries of the students were
solved instantaneously which helped them to get a clear
picture of all the operations of the firm.
SANY Group Company Limited was established in 1989
which is involved in the construction equipment
manufacturing. Their leading products include construction
machinery (truck mounted concrete pump, trailer mounted
concrete pump, concrete batching plant.), Road Machinery
(motor grader, roller, asphalt paver, asphalt batching plant,
cold milling machine), excavator, piling machinery (rotary
drilling ring), crawler crane, trenchless equipment (horizontal
directional driller), harbour machinery (reach stacker etc.).
The Company was established in India in 2003.
After the entire plant was shown in detail, where the
equipments displayed were very well explained, the
production process and its flow was told, the students were
taken to the conference room where all the queries from the
management point of view, asked by the students, were
answered very patiently. The production cost- incurred,
competitors, pricing strategies, marketing strategies, import
duties, government policies with respect to state incentives,
location, expansion plan, Research and Development plans
and human resource development were answered by Mr
Tushar who is the project head of the company. A visiting
marketing head from China came and briefed us about the
marketing strategies used by the company with regards to
local brands as well as the different strategies used for various
countries of the world.
The session ended in a contended manner by the students as
well as the company people. It was indeed an exhilarating
experience for all.

involved in production of moulded parts for the automobile &
farm equipment sectors. The company finds its locations in
France, Hallol, China, UK, Spain. The company has diverse
products like Cockpit assembly products, Injection moulded
plastic components, Dashboards, Air vents, Door trims, ABC
pillers, Bumpers, Front grills. They cater to the needs of Fiat,
Ford, General Motors, TOYOTA, Audi, Honda, Ashok
Leyland, Hindustan Motors, Skoda, Mahindra and Mahindra,
John Deere, Swaraj Mazda, Man Force Truck, Except Maruti
Suzuki. The plant was nicely shown and that concluded in to
an informative interaction between the students and the
officer. It was indeed a great experience.
