2.1 Tips and Techniques

1. The question may require only one of the following :


• Descriptions of processes and procedures.
• Presenting opinions on social/current issues
• Descriptive / narrative / argumentative / expository compositions
• Reports
• Speeches
• Interviews
• Stories with moral values
2. Students are advised to spend 45 minutes on this section,
3. Read the question and stimulus carefully and determine your answer
format - is it a letter (formal / informal), a speech, etc.
4. Make sure to include all the vital information to fulfill the required task.
5. Expand each main point to gain more marks.
6. Use the style or tone that is suitable for the answer.
7. To make your answer interesting, use various effective expressions,
markers, linkers and suitable vocabulary.
8. Plan your composition well to gain more marks.
9. A good ending or conclusion will also benefit you.
10. Remember to check your answer for any spelling, punctuation or
grammatical errors.

2.4 Directed Writing

Good morning teachers and fellow students. First, I must thank the
principal for giving me the opportunity to speak today. The topic of my speech
is “Effects of Deforestation”. You might be alarmed to know that since 1950, a
fifth of the world’s forest cover has been removed. At least 55% of the world’s
productive temperate rainforest has been cleared.

A forest is a natural self – sustaining community characterized by the


presence of trees. Human beings have realized many benefits from the trees
in the form of timber, medicine, food and fuel.

The result has been a steady loss of natural forest. The clearing of forest
leads directly to a loss of animal habitat and thus, a decline to a large part of
the planet’s biodiversity. The plant species are disappearing together with the
forests.

As forests assure the preservation of water, their destruction causes


effects such as extensive flooding, droughts, soil erosion and pollution. When
trees are burnt or cut down, the carbon that has been stored up in the forests
is incorporated into the atmosphere, thereby aggravating the greenhouse
effect.

Protecting the forests therefore is of paramount importance. Previous


approaches to conserving rainforest have failed. These methods consisted of
the closing off of forests such as creating parks and reserves and using
guards and fences to secure boundaries. However, these were not effective at
all due to lack of funds and cooperation from the public. Forest conservation
must involve the government, private sector and people to work out well.

I hope the short talk that I have delivered has given you some ideas on the
effects of deforestation. Thank you for listening.

3.5 Tips and Techniques
1. Students are required to choose one out of the five topics.
2. The topics fall in the range of:
• narrative composition
• argumentative composition
• descriptive composition
• reflective composition
• expository or factual composition
• open essays
3. Students should spend one hour on this section.
4. Read and understand all the questions given and choose a topic
carefully, weighing all the points that you have.
5. Plan an outline for the topic such as using mind-maps.
6. Be original and creative especially in your introductory sentence and
concluding sentence or paragraph.
7. Avoid writing sentences that are too long or boring to read. Write as
neatly as possible.
8. Use sentences of various lengths, figurative expressions, direct speech.
quotations to make your essay more interesting. Avoid using bombastic
words which are irrelevant.
9. Write in paragraphs. Each paragraph should have a main point and its
supporting details. Paragraphs should be linked.
10. Use the appropriate tone and style to create the mood that you want.
11. Make sure your composition fulfills the required length of about 350

12. Time yourself and leave at least 10 minutes for checking.

3.7 Sample Answer - Good (An Unexpected Visitor)
It was comfortably warm in the living room and the fire crackling in the
grate bathed the room in gold. He was quite comfortably seated in the old
over – stuffed wingchair, a cup of tea at his side and the mornings newspaper
on his lap. It was quite understandable then that when the doorbell rang, he
groaned in resignation and very reluctantly left his nest.

The doorbell rang again, the person at the door punching the ringer
repeatedly as if there was some urgency to the matter of the visit.

“Oh, alright! Hold on, will you? I am coming!” he called irritatedly,


hurrying along the hallway. He opened the door, prepared to give whoever
was on the other side a good telling off. His words died on his tongue when he
saw the small face framed in the all-tag familiar chestnut curls. She smiled
tentatively at him and he felt his earlier irritation return and he scowled.

“What are you doing here?”, he demanded stiffly, making no move to


allow her to enter his abode. The soft smile on her lips faltered and she
reached up to brush her hair behind her ears.

“Well, I ………..” She tapered off and frowned severely at him, ‘I see
that you have not learned any manners at all.”

“I do apologise,” he replied just as sneakily, “I was in the bathroom


when they were handing out manners and etiquettes.”

“Are you not going to invite me in? It is cold out here, Dravian.

“What are you doing here?” he repeated, blocking the doorway with his
bulk and crossing his arms across his chest.
“We will talk about it over tea,” she snapped back and pushed him
aside roughly. He scowled at her back as she carefully dusted the snow off
her coat and hung it in the closet. She turned and caught his eye. She grinned
teasingly at him and lifted an eloquent eyebrow. “The usual then”

His features settled into a neutral expression and he stared back at her
silently. She laughed and shook her head and headed for the kitchen. He
stood motionless for a moment as a small spark of forgotten longing tugged
his heart. He ran a hand distractedly through his dark hair and sighed.

He went to tidy his study, putting away the scattered books and closing
the drawer of his desk properly. He smiled when he thought back on her
aggravation on his half-open drawers. He glanced at the clock and exited the
room, closing the door firmly behind him.

Dravian stirred his drink moodily and they both kept their silence. At
last he put aside teaspoon and cleared his throat. “I presume you wanted to
see me for something?”

She nursed her drink before answering, “I had quite a shock yesterday,
Dravian. I know our marriage has long been over and annulled, but I still have
to know; do you really plan on marrying that girl?”

He sat up straighter in his seat. “Marry whom?” he demanded very


surprised. As far as he knows he is not engaged to anyone. He did not relish
being bagged down by a wife or something similar.

She searched his face, looking surprised, “Heather Biglow, of course!”

“That mindless twist? You have to be joking!”

Cosatte frowned and sipped her Earl Grey again, “This is all very
confusing business, Dravian. An attorney visited me last night and told me”
She stopped herself. “I had better show you the letter,” she said at last and
dug into her purse.

He leaned forward to take the envelope from her and as he did, his
fingers brushed hers and it was a disconcerting moment for him. He felt the
jolt of electricity run down his spine. He masked his awkwardness by
coughing.

Dravian pulled several sheets of paper from within the envelope and
began scanning them. His eyes grew steadily wider at each line and at last,
he threw the stock onto the table. “An arranged marriage?” he spluttered
indignantly, his face red. “I cannot believe it!”

“He did it before, “ she said dryly.

He took a steadily breath. Yes, she was right. His father had done this
before. Silently, he cursed the old man’s will. His father had arranged a
marriage for him. The terms of the contract was simple; marry the woman
Dravian Senior had chosen or lose the estate.

He grabbed the papers again and began riffling through them in


desperation. “There has to be something we can do!”

He missed the small smile on Cosette’s lips. “Well, yes. There is one
thing…..”.

He turned questioning eyes to her. She pushed back her chair and
stood, brushing off the crumbs from her dress before making her way over to
him. Gently, she pulled the documents from his trembling fingers. She silently
selected a page and handed it to him. Quickly, he read the page. “What?” he
asked blankly.

“Dravian, read this line. It says that you have to marry the woman your
father chose for you”.

“Yes; Heather Biglow,” he said glumly.

“Her name is not printed here. Think, Dravian,” she emphasised “think”’,
“Your father was an intelligent man and a horribly good schemer. “The
woman”, Dravian, not “Heather Biglow”.

He stared at her as comprehension downed. She smiled at him and


nodded. His father had caught him in a similar trap before. Dravian was forced
to marry. Dravian Senior had chosen his first wife, and it was Cosette.

“I did not think he even liked you!”

She threw back her head and laughed. Her mirth soon subsided and
she held his gaze. “How about it?” I fit the bill; he chose me before to be your
wife”.

“You…you want to marry me again?” he asked, flabbergasted.

She shrugged easily, “Why not?” Then she blushed, I must admit I
have missed you terribly”.

“And I you,” he replied honestly.

She pressed her lips against his in a chaste kiss. She pulled back
when she saw his frown. “What is wrong?”

“My father! I cannot believe he planned this! Interfering fellow – even in


death I get no respite”.

She hugged him, “Well, he always did say he knew best”.


He stared down at the top of her head. “Yes……… he is right. You are
the best for me.”

3.8 Sample Answer - Moderate (An Unexpected Visitor)

I could still remember how I cried and whined like a baby when I saw
my dear darling sister left for Australia. Her company sent her there two
years ago because she had a major project to do there. As usual, early that
morning , I would wake up, brush my teeth and run down for my “Koko –
Krunch” breakfast just like every other day. However, on one particular
morning as I was having my meal, the door bell rang and my father asked
me to open the door. With a grumpy facial expression, I went to open the
door unwillingly. Once I turned the door knob, I saw a familiar face, one that
I had missed since two years ago. It was my sister with all her luggage and
she’s returned home. So, I quickly ran into the house cheering and
welcoming my dear sister which did put on quite some weight since the last
time I saw her.

My parents who thought I was talking rots came and see who was the
visitor at the door. They were surprised that my sister was standing rigt
infront the door. Then, I heard a deep voice with a little Australian accent
saying, “Darling, please introduce them to me.” My parents and I was
shocked to see that my sister has brought back her Australian boyfriend,
Rick Thomas to our house. After greeting my father and mother, both my
sister and her boyfriend entered my house. My parents who was clueless on
why my sister had suddenly came back without any notice gladly served
both she and her boyfriend food.

While eating, my sister explained that her company /\ sent her back
here because her work up in Australia is done. Her boyfriend, who was quiet
all along, added that they had decided to stay in Australia and work there.
We were quite shocked to hear that my sister and her boyfriend are staying
there and getting married and they said that one of the reasons why she /\
came back was to get my parent’s blessing.

My parents who wasn’t really happy with my sister’s decision to stay


there and get married at first reluctantly agreed /\ their marriage as my sister
and her boyfriend had been together /\ quite sometime. After that, my sister
decided to bring me and her husband for a ride around the town and
neighbourhood. I followed her in her new bought car, Mazda 6. She was
quite surprise with the drastic change and development of our neighbour
hood and said that she /\ almost forgot the road to my house.

In the afternoon, my sister called my parents up and she wanted to


treat them a scrumptious meal in Thai Thong restaurant. She ordered many
of my parent’s favourite food such as Sweetsour Pork and Curry Fish head.
“I can’t believe she still remembers what my parents like” whispered my
heart. After lunch, we went and my sister said she wanted /\ rest. At about 4
p.m. she got up and she asked me how I was doing at school. I told her I
wasn’t doing so well and I didn’t know what my teacher was talking about.
Then, she took the initiative to teach me whatever she knows and it did
really help me understand the subjects better. At night, she cooked dinner

for my family without my mother’s help. It was really a delicious meal and
her cooking /\ improved tremendously since the last time.

During that whole week of stay, my sister brought me out and took me
to dine much rare delicacies which I myself haven’t tasted before although I
live in Malaysia. Some which includes German sausage which cost RM 15
for one, and sushi, a Japanese food which I haven’t heard /\ before. Though
it was only a week of stay in my house, it did cause an impact on my life on
my life and with her guidance in Mathematics, my results improved.

When it was time for her to go, my heart felt very broken and hurt
because I know I will never get to see my darling sister in the near future.
Now, when I think and flash back, I was to see the “Unexpected Visitor”
which came and changed my life forever.

rooms. They are making 5 cavity treatment painless and reducing bleeding
during surgery. Yes, this is the latest development in the field of dentistry
known as laser dentistry. It uses various instruments, each using a slightly
different type of light, to cut gums, soft tissues and even enamel. It also 10
detects tiny cavities and whitens teeth. Yet, they remain outside the
profession’s mainstream, and dental schools do not currently train students
how to use them.

3 Dental applications of lasers have been studied since lasers were first
developed in the 1960s. Although they are more precise than many 15
conventional instruments, they have not completely replaced conventional
high – speed drills or other cutting tools on the dental clinics. The other
advantages are that dental laser minimize the pain of treating small cavities
while helping to preserve more of the surrounding tooth. Lasers are more
sensitive than the human eye in picking up tiny pit and fissure cavities. 20

4 In gum surgery, where the lasers not only cuts but can staunch
bleeding by coagulation, healing is better and faster. On the other hand, since
lasers produce energy and heat, they can potentially damage the tooth or
other tissues, especially if they are used at too high a power for too long. A
word of caution for dental patients. They should make sure that their dentist 25
who uses lasers is properly trained and experienced.

5 Currently, dentists and dental hygienists can be trained by the laser


manufactures through courses at some universities an through programmes
sponsored by the academy. The Academy of Laser Dentistry, which promotes
lasers in addition to training and certifying dentists to sue them, estimates that 30
about 5% of dentists in the United States incorporate lasers into their
practices.

6 Virtual dentistry, on the other hand, uses computer programmes to


explore the many different treatments and allow students to practice on virtual
patients. Before using this programme, it is important that the dentist must first 35
find out the virtual patient profile. This profile enables dental surgeons to
explore different treatments and more accurately, predicts results. One
American dentist using lasers in his clinic said, “Most of the time, our
explanations consists a lot of verbal descriptions and hand – waving. But with
this programme, we can take what’s going inside our heads and show it to 40
patients”. The patients can see his teeth on the computer screen.

7 What happens is that a very accurate likeness is created with the four
tools: a normal computer using a jaw motion tracker, a dental camera that
takes pictures inside the mouth, a CT scanner to create X – ray – type photos
and images of a plaster model to capture the shape the external flesh. So 45
now, instead of mentally reconstructing the past when they try to explain how
to do these procedures, they can send someone a CD – Rom with the surgery
on it in 3 – D. Such computer programmes are a sort of flight simulator for
medical and dental students.

5.5.3 Sample Answer for Summary

The practice of laser dentistry and virtual dentistry enable dentists to


treat dental problems better. Many dental clinics are using the lasers instead
of the dental drill. They make cavity treatment painless and reduce bleeding
during surgery. It also detects tiny cavities and whitens teeth, besides
preserving the surrounding tooth. Lasers are more sensitive in picking up
cavities. After each treatment, healing is better and faster. Virtual dentistry
uses compute programs to explore different types of treatment. On top of that,
dentists and patients can see the teeth on the screen. Finally, computer
programmes are like flight simulators for medical and dental students.
However, as lasers produce high energy and heat, they can potentially
damage the tooth and other tissues. Improperly trained dentist can cause
harm to patients.

5.5.4 Model Answer for Literature

The character that I dislike most in The Pearl by John Steinbeck is the doctor.
He is an unethical doctor who chooses to treat only rich patients. When Kino’s
son, Coyotito, is stung by the scorpion, the doctor refuses to treat the child
because he says Kino and Juana will never be able to pay him. His attitude is
the opposite of good doctors who are supposed to treat everybody equally.

However, when he discovers that Kino has found the great pearl, he
smugly announces to the villagers that Kino is on of his patients. The doctor
shows that he is insincere when he decides to go to the brush houses to pay
Coyotito a visit. He has never set his foot anywhere near the village before.
Obviously, Kino’s great pearl is his only reason for going to the brush houses.

Another reason why I dislike the doctor is because he is a criminal.


When he sees that the baby is getting better, he realizes his services are not
needed. Thus, he gives the baby some white powder, which later turns out to
be poison, just to ensure that he will be able to come back and ‘cure’ the baby.
This is criminal act and the doctor deserves to be punished. Fortunately, Kino
does not fall for his trickery as he refuses to give the pearl to the doctor for
safekeeping.

The doctor is greedy and dishonest. This is why it is easy to dislike this
character.
