Scribd  to  Convert  20  Million+  Documents  Across  the  Web  into  HTML5  Content
Top  News  Sites  Benefit  from  Improved  Mobile  Reading  Experience

SAN  FRANCISCO—March  17,  2011—Scribd,  the  world’s  largest  social  reading  and  publishing  company,
today  announced  the  roll-‐out  of  HTML5  code  for  all  websites  currently  displaying  Scribd  content  in  Flash.
The  update  comes  less  than  a  year  after  the  conversion  of  more  than  a  billion  pages  of  content  on
Scribd.com.  The  company’s  patent-‐pending  technology  turns  offline  material,  including  books,
magazines  and  PowerPoint  presentations  into  easy-‐to-‐read  web  pages.

Starting  today,  all  new  material  uploaded  to  Scribd  and  embedded  on  third-‐party  websites  will  display  in
HTML5,  the  web  language  supported  by  most  mobile  devices  such  as  iPhones,  iPads  and  Android
smartphones.  In  addition,  all  content  previously  embedded  using  the  Flash-‐based  reader  will  convert  to
HTML5  in  the  coming  weeks.

The  update  will  benefit  tens  of  thousands  of  web  publishers,  including  Dropbox,  FindLaw,  Monster.com,
Notehall,  Posterous  and  SAP.  Other  Scribd  users  include  media  organizations  that  frequently  include
supporting  material  such  as  printed  illustrations,  research  and  legal  briefs  within  their  stories.  They
include  local,  national,  international,  blog  and  multimedia  brands  such  as  Business  Insider,  CBS  News,
CNBC,  The  Chicago  Tribune,  Forbes,  Fortune,  GigaOm,  The  Globe  &  Mail,  The  Guardian,  The  New  York
Times,  PaidContent,  TechCrunch  and  USA  Today.

Scribd  pioneered  the  movement  of  web  documents  into  HTML5  in  May  2010  in  anticipation  of  the
staggering  growth  of  the  smartphone  market  and  readers’  desire  for  a  better  way  to  read  from  within  a
mobile  browser.

“The  bottom  line  is  that  reading  is  just  better  in  HTML5,”  said  Scribd  CTO  and  co-‐founder  Jared
Friedman,  the  mastermind  behind  Scribd’s  technology  innovations,  including  its  path-‐breaking
document  and  HTML5  conversion  technology.  “The  material  loads  clearer,  faster  and  can  be  read  from
any  mobile  device.  We  made  the  transition  on  our  own  site  last  May  and  engagement  has  more  than
doubled.  We  want  the  same  results  for  our  publishers.”

More  than  10  million  readers  access  Scribd  documents  on  third  party  websites.  The  embedded  Scribd
reader  will  also  allow  readers  to  easily  “Readcast”  and  share  the  story  with  connections  on  Scribd,
Facebook  and  Twitter.
