SUCCESSFUL 2008 SUPER TEAMS MEET! GO NSSC!

Super Splash Final Results are in……

The CAESARS are the winning group for the first time! All Caesars that actively participated
AND BRANG IN A MONATARY CONTRIBUTION will receive a flier with the date and time of
the two-hour pizza fun party! Again the pizza party is for the Caesar swimmers that
participated and brought in money to win the party! The Caesar group in total brought in
$7,018.22-Awesome Job!
The entire team brought in about $21,500.00; which means once again, the coaching staff
will NOT have to go in fully clothed this year. The break down of group money is as follows:
Caesars-$7,018.22, Knights-$5854.92, Warriors-$5234.62, Chiefs 1-$2158.00, Chiefs 2-
$566.00 and Chiefs 3-$713.10 (Chiefs Group combined: $3,437.10)!
The Top 3 Money Raisers on NSSC are: Erik Slavin (Chiefs 1)-$1382.00, Shannon Kilburg
(Knight)-$1000.60 and Rachel Levy (Knight)-$552.00. Plaques will be awarded to those swimmers
at our annual banquet in April. All prizes should be in and distributed by mid-February (if not
sooner)! Everyone will look very stylish in the NSSC gear! Congrats to all!

Where does all this money go, you may be asking-Good Question! This year we will purchase 2 more
new bins ($2500.00) to lock NSSC equipment in and act as benches for our swimmers! The prizes, pizza
party and plaques will come out of this ($5000.00) and NSSC plans to have entertainment at the
banquet as a special twist this year and fun for the swimmers ($1200.00). Lastly, we plan to purchase
more and new equipment for the younger swimmers (after we get the lockable benches) and a bunch of
dry land equipment for the older swimmers! There are many things this young new team needs and
fundraising is our way of keeping the team supplied! Remember, we have the Achievement program
prizes-Jackets, sweatshirts and drag suits to purchase this year (see additional info on this in newsletter).
Coaches Corner:

I believe it is time for the parents secret swim code. Please be sure to take time to review the following
Parent commandments and be sure to follow them to allow your swimmer (S) to have the ultimate swim
experience! If you are following these guidelines then a great swimming parent you are and kudos to you and
your swimmers! Sometimes we need a refresher or a reminder because it is very easy to become wrapped up
in the fast swimming excitement!

I. Thou shalt not impose thy ambitions on thy child.

Remember that swimming is your child's activity. Improvements and progress occur at different rates for each individual.
Don't judge your child's progress based on the performance of other athletes and don't push him based on what you
think he should be doing. The nice thing about swimming is every person can strive to do his personal best and benefit from
the process of competitive swimming.

II. Thou shalt be supportive no matter what.

There is only one question to ask your child after a practice or a competition - "Did you have fun?" If meets and practices
are not fun, your child should not be forced to participate.

III. Thou shalt not coach thy child.

You are involved in one of the few youth sports programs that offer professional coaching. Do not undermine the
professional coach by trying to coach your child on the side. Your job is to provide love and support. The coach is
responsible for the technical part of the job. You should not offer advice on technique or race strategy. Never pay your child
for a performance. This will only serve to confuse your child concerning the reasons to strive for excellence and weaken the
swimmer/coach bond.

IV. Thou shalt only have positive things to say at a swimming meet.

You should be encouraging and never criticize your child or the coach. Both of them know when mistakes have been made.
Remember “yelling at” is not the same as “cheering for”.

V. Thou shalt acknowledge thy child's fears.

New experiences can be stressful situations. It is totally appropriate for your child to be scared. Don't yell or belittle, just
assure your child that the coach would not have suggested the event or meet if your child was not ready. Remember your
job is to love and support your child through all of the swimming experience.

VI. Thou shalt not criticize the officials.

Please don't criticize those who are doing the best they can in purely voluntary positions.

VII. Honor thy child's coach.

The bond between coach and swimmer is special. It contributes to your child's success as well as fun. Do not criticize the
coach in the presence of your child.

VIII. Thou shalt be loyal and supportive of thy team.

It is not wise for parents to take swimmers and to jump from team to team. The water isn't necessarily bluer in another
team's pool. Every team has its own internal problems, even teams that build champions. Children who switch from team to
team find that it can be a difficult emotional experience. Often swimmers who do switch teams don't do better than they did
before they sought the bluer water.

IX. Thy child shalt have goals besides winning.

Most successful swimmers have learned to focus on the process and not the outcome. Giving an honest effort regardless of
what the outcome is is much more important than winning. One Olympian said, "My goal was to set a world record. Well, I
did that, but someone else did it too, just a little faster than I did. I achieved my goal and I lost. Does this make me a
failure? No, in fact I am very proud of that swim." What a tremendous outlook to carry on through life.

X. Thou shalt not expect thy child to become an Olympian.

There are 250,000 athletes in USA Swimming. There are only 52 spots available for the Olympic Team every four years.
Your child's odds of becoming an Olympian are about .0002%.

 NSSC-North Shore Gold & Silver Swim Conference
Update
It is that time of year again. Every swimmer will be
participating in either the Silver or Gold level conference
meet. If you have or have not competed this year-this is a
terrific way to end your fall/winter season! Silver conference
will be held at Stevenson High School on Wednesday, February
20th (5:15 PM Warm-up/6:00 PM Meet Start) and a list of
swimmers that will be signed up for that meet will be out
shortly. There WILL BE escrow fees for this meet and we will
need timers for that meet, please be prepared to help out!
Gold conference will be hosted by Arlington Alligators at
Elk Grove High School on Sunday, February 17th. Last year the
sessions and times were: 9-10 & 11-12 will be AM session with
a 7 Am warm-up/8 AM Meet Start and 8 & Under & 13-14 will be
in the PM session with a 11:30 AM warm-up and 12:30 PM Meet
Start. I will let you know as soon as confirmed if that is the
same session and start time. We will once again need the help
of all parents that will have swimmers participating in this
meet to help time a lane or two! The lists of swimmers that
will be participating in the Gold meet will be out as soon as
possible, I will put those in mailboxes and e-blast them out.
If for some reason you are unable to participate in this meet,
please let Coach Kelly know ASAP via e-mail at
coachkp@nssclub.com so we an replace you! Again, these team
meets are an important team function for NSSC and a great way
to wrap up the season!

Thank you to all the NSSC Officials that really putting in the hours this weekend at
 Super Teams! We have a bunch of new officials that trained away all of their
requirements throughout the weekend at Super Teams. There are many perks to
becoming an official: You get fed throughout the day (our hospitality is TOPS), you
have a ring side seat to the action and do not have to endure the heat up in the
stands and the time flies by when working. NSSC thanks our host of officials that
went above and beyond the duty this weekend and at other meets we attend!

Parking situation at meets:

You are all probably aware of
the parking situation becoming
difficult at the end of the
morning session and the
beginning of the afternoon
session at any meet!

I ask that you do not make spots

at any lot that are not official
spots in the lot. You may have to
walk a bit, drop your swimmer
at the front door and then you
go park. If you want prime
parking, come to the meet a bit
earlier that the suggested
start time.

Swimming has become a big sport

and not all facilities have the
front door parking we all would
like. Please be patient and do
not take it upon yourself to add
a row or spot. Thanks!
 NSSC 2008 Annual Banquet Update!
NEW THIS YEAR: Our annual Banquet will be held at
Mission Hills, so we are closer to Northbrook and Glenview!
With the closer location, we are hoping for a high attendance
number as the banquet is so much fun and provides so much
recognition. We will be having our banquet on Friday April 18th,
2008 from 6-9:30 PM. All swimmers will be awarded for their
dedication and improvements throughout the year of 2007-2008
with NSSC! Mark your calendars now-you will not want to miss
this special occasion! NSSC will once again provide an evening of
entertainment not to be forgotten! Come on out with your
family to receive your annual yearbook (a memorable keepsake)
and trophy as well as additional awards to be determined as always.

NSSC 2008 Team Photo Fun Night

We are currently working on setting up a team photo

evening! NSSC would like to see all possible swimmers to be
in the photo, so we are looking at two alternative dates to
fulfill that request. NSSC is looking at Monday, February
18th or Thursday, February 28th (the final day of winter
practice). We are planning to do a pizza dinner after the
picture this year as well. Please be on the look out for more
details on this fun filled evening! The individual photos will
be taken first and then the team photo. Look for more
details; I will put them on the weekly Splash &
February Newsletter as soon as everything is
established and finalized!

Report Card Frenzy! The smart swimmers have been handing in

their report cards left and right! I am amazed at how many
swimmers manage to compete in a tough sport and still study so

weekend of February 22-24th. The meet will be held at Lake Forest High
School in Lake Forest, IL, hosted by the Scouts Swim Club.

CHICAGO WOLVES GAME/NSSC OUTING RECAP!

The holiday NSSC outing to the Wolves game proved to be a
fun success! The swimmer, families and coaches had a great
time, we had great seats and there were about 70 total from
NSSC, which is a wonderful turnout! If you were not able
to join us, be sure to join in on the next adventure!
If you are feeling skeptical because you have never seen a
hockey game or do not understand the sport, do not fret!
There is much more to do there than just watch the puck fly
across the ice! The swimmers and siblings were constantly
on their feet, cheering, singing and dancing, it was a
blast! It is a very fast paced sport and easy to catch on!
NSSC has decided to try a group outing to the Schaumburg
flyers baseball game this summer, so watch for details!
Lastly, thanks to Coach Stefanie Starck for setting NSSC up
with the fabulous group pricing and sweet up close seats.
If you are in need of Wolves tickets for any group outing,
please contact Stefanie to help with all the details, she
is happy to help.

NSSC Achievement Program Update:

Points are updated weekly; swimmers can monitor their points on the deck
each week (down on the East pool doors). If current points are not up on
Monday, they will be by Tuesday (Coach Kelly apologizes-after a
weekend of meets-sometimes the points do not get in on Monday). Please
remember, if you achieved your jacket last year, that is a one-time only
prize from NSSC. This year you will be looking to achieve the next levels:

Warriors/Chiefs need 350 Points-NSSC Sweatshirt & 450 Points-NSSC Drag Suit

Caesar/Knights need 300 Points-NSSC Sweatshirt & 400 Points-NSSC Drag Suit

If you have not achieved your NSSC jacket yet, then you need to earn 150
points and the jacket is yours. I am sure you have seen swimmers wearing
them around as they really stand out. They cannot be purchased only
earned! The first batch of jacket & sweatshirt orders will be in the spring
and the second batch will be after summer season and include the drag
suit orders! There have already been sheets distributed to the swimmers
that have reached the 150 to get their jackets put in their mailboxes.
Please return those to their coach with their name choice and size choice
ASAP. There are many ways to achieve points, be on the look out and get
to practice! GO NSSC!!!!!

Hey NSSC Parents: Are you one of “THOSE” parents??

Every Team has them and Every Coach talks about them. Coaches even know certain ones
from other teams. This is always a difficult subject to broach but after the meet this weekend I
find it extremely appropriate to bring this up at this time of the season! I am using this time as a
last ditch effort to make the NSSC swimmers the best they can be under our coaching staff’s
watch. I understand how hard it is to be the professional supporter as a parent (or a former
athlete/coach etc) but it is critical in the development of any young athlete.
Unfortunately, I as head coach tend to catch, see and hear almost everything. It is not
necessarily a power that I enjoy often. I am tiring of the parent coaching I see all around me at
meets, practices, in the locker-room/hallways etc. These actions need to stop or the next step will
be a meeting with the head coach and could ultimately lead to refusal of future registrations with
NSSC. This is a harsh reality but if I just ignore this problem now, it will only get worse. Please
remember, this is with the best intentions of every athlete on NSSC and is not meant to pick on
anyone specifically. Please review the list below and if you find yourself doing any of the
following, I ask you change your ways to become more supportive of our mission statement, goals
and dreams.
Please do not give pointers or reminders to your swimmers before their races at
meets; this is the coach’s job! You may be telling them the opposite of what our
staff is saying which completely confuses the swimmer!
Please do not coach from the stands, showing hand signals or communicating with
your swimmer during practice. This is very distracting for your swimmer and they
stop paying attention their coach, in turn, losing focus on the practice.
You should only be concerned with your swimmer and not every other swimmer
their age on the team. You should not compare your swimmer to the others either,
they all progress at different times; this is very damaging. Be supportive at all
times.
Please do not videotape during practice, there is no reason for this! If you would
like to video races for family to see or memories that is fine with me. Please do not
make your swimmer sit and watch their races while you analysis it for them, this is
wrong!
Please do not watch swim videos to discuss stroke, race or anything with your child.
NSSC follows a specific stroke technique throughout our team, taught by a coach
and it is working fine. Many times those videos are specific to High School or
College aged swimmers that cannot carry over to young swimmers.
Please be sure to get your swimmer to practice as much as possible. The more your
swimmer attends, the more they will improve. However, if at 11 & under it is the
 ONLY sport they are doing, it is too young to make that decision to only do one
sport. All athletes will be better well rounded if they experience many sports. At
age 12 or older if they chose one, that is a great age to choose.
Our focus is on improvement and not winning and so should yours, so please adjust!
If a swimmer improves on stroke technique and/or time, we acknowledge and thrive
on that with each swimmer after every race.

Too many parents have high expectations for their swimmer and their swimmers
have no expectations, which is a recipe for disaster. The swimmers need to have
goals for their swimming and do what is necessary to reach them by themselves.
Let your swimmer FAIL and figure out how to recover from that failure with the
help of the coach. The learning experiences from these failures it unbelievable.

The bottom line is: Let the swimmer’s~swim, the coach’s~coach and the parent’s~parent.
I am not able to come into your home and give you pointers on how to parent or come into
your business and give you pointers on how to work. Please, Please, Please help me out
and cooperate with our coaching staffs above wishes. Thank you and Happy New Year

Schroeder YMCA A+ Meet – Brown Deer, WI

NSSC will be taking more than 30 swimmers up to the Schroeder

YMCA A+ meet this year on the weekend of February 1-3rd, 2008.
This is a very difficult meet to qualify for and we are

Gemma Abbott is 6 years old, lives in Northbrook with her dog-Echo, attends Westmoor School and is a future
GBN Spartan that likes back and breast best. Outside of the water Gemma enjoys vacationing in Orlando,
watching Hannah Montana, listening to Radio Disney, and playing Sorry. Her favorite sport besides swimming is
soccer.
Laila Abdelhamid is 7 years old, lives in Northbrook with her 2 cats-Tiger & Cleo, attends Hickory Point School
and is a future GBN Spartan that likes freestyle best. She would like to improve her freestyle and get into the
Knights group. While not water-logged Laila enjoys eating out at Sweet Tomatoes, watching Hannah Montana,
vacationing in Disney World, and playing Monopoly.
Sammy Issacson is 7 years old, lives in Northbrook with his dog Soliel, attends Grove School and is a future
GBN Spartan that likes Freestyle best. Outside of swimming Sammy enjoys watching Sponge Bob, listening to
rap music, and eating his favorite food-hotdogs. He is also a part of the NSSC diving team.
Becky Lee is 11 years old, lives in Northbrook, attends Maple School and is a future GBN Spartan that likes
Freestyle best. Becky would like to master Butterfly and get better at diving. While not water-logged she
enjoys vacationing in Hawaii, eating out at Sweet Tomatoes, shopping at Abercrombie, and listening to B96.
Jake Shapiro is 6 years old, lives in Northbrook with her fish, attends Hickory Point School & is a future GBN
Spartan that likes free best. Outside of the pool he likes to ski, play chess, vacation in Mexico, and eat out at
Sushi restaurants. Jake aspires to become a chef when he grows up.
Genevieve Thompson is 8 years old, lives in Glenview with her pet Abby, attends Glen Grove School, and is
a future GBS Titan that likes to swim Backstroke best. Outside of the pool she enjoys eating out at Yard
House, playing Clue, watching Funniest Home Videos, and shopping at Justice. Genevieve aspires to
become an actor when she grows up.

Elizabeth Zhou is 10 years old, lives in Northbrook with her hermit crabs, attends Wescott School and is a
future GBN Spartan that likes Freestyle best. While not water-logged she enjoys watching Disney channel,
vacationing in Hawaii, eating out at Red Star Tavern, and playing Life. Elizabeth aspires to become a swimmer
or doctor when she grows up.
Daria Pyshnenko is 9 years old, lives in Lake Bluff with her cat-Musya, attends Central School and is a future
Lake Forest Scout that likes Breaststroke best. Outside of the pool she enjoys vacationing in Florida, playing
Life, watching Hannah Montana, and eating out at McDonalds. Daria’s favorite NSSC moment was going to
Great America with the team.
Christine Orzechowski is 12 years old, lives in Northbrook, attends Wood Oaks School and is a future GBN
Spartan that likes Breaststroke best. While not water logged, she enjoys watching The Wonder Years,
listening to 103.5, eating pasta at her favorite restaurant-Dave’s Italian Kitchen, and shopping at Abercrombie.
Christine aspires to become a pediatrician or teacher when she grows up.
Shannon Kilburg is 10 years old, lives in Northbrook, attends Westmoor School & is a future GBN Spartan that
likes freestyle best. She would like to improve her breaststroke and would like to swim all her strokes faster.
Outside of the pool she likes to watch Hannah Montana, eat out at Bonefish Grill, vacation in Michigan, and
cheer forher favorite college team-Notre Dame.

Elizabeth Baetz is 11 years old, lives in Glenview, attends Springman School and is a future GBS Titan that
likes Breaststroke best. Outside of the pool she enjoys eating out at Ron of Japan, vacationing in Italy,
listening to 103.5, and watching Monk. Lizzy’s goals are to improve her butterfly and remain a breaststroker.
Her favorite NSSC moment is when she found out she made the JO cut in the 50 breast.
Matt Durkin is 12 years old, resides in Glenview, attends Attea & is a future GBS Spartan that likes free best.
Outside of the pool he enjoys eating out at Benihana, listening to 96.3, watching Greek, and playing basketball.
Matt has a twin sister Kim that swims in the Warriors group also.
Maddy Fournier is 11 years old, lives in Northbrook, attends Quest Academy, and is a future GBN Spartan
that likes Backstroke best. Outside of the pool she likes to vacation in Hawaii, watch Hannah Montana, eat out
at Sweet Tomatoes, and play Life. Maddy’s favorite famous swimmer is Michael Phelps because he works really
hard!

Some of Kelly’s goals are to make Junior Nationals in the summer and get a full ride to a good swimming school.

Kate Dvornitsyn is turning 15 years old, lives in Northbrook, attends GBN High School and likes backstroke
best. While not water-logged, Kate enjoys watching America Next Top Model, vacationing in Hawaii, listening
to 103.5, and eating out at Port Edwards. Her favorite famous swimmer is Alex Popov because he is fast and he
is Russian.

Jill Kawasaki is 15 years old, lives in Northbrook, attends GBN and likes to swim Breaststroke best. Outside
of the pool she enjoys listening to her iPod, watching Grey’s Anatomy & New Port Harbor, eating out at Sarkis,
and playing scrabble. Jill’s favorite famous swimmer is Jenny Thompson because she made the Olympics at age
30.
Katherine Nickele is 17 years old, lives in Glenview, attends Regina Dominican High School, and likes breast
best. Outside of the pool she enjoys cheering for the cubs, playing Life, listening to 101.9, and watching
Everybody Loves Raymond. Katherine aspires to become a pediatrician when she gets older.

Claire Asmussen is 13 years old, lives in Northbrook with her 2 dogs-Lucky & Buddy, attends Northbrook Junior
High and likes to swim backstroke best. Outside of the pool she enjoys vacationing in Thailand, watching One
Tree Hill, soccer, and cheering for her favorite college team-Northwestern. Claie aspires to become a doctor
when she gets older.
Ryan Brander is 14 years old, lives in Glenview with his 2 dogs-Guinness & CoCo, attends Attea Junior High and
likes to swim Freestyle best. Outside of the pool he likes to watch Family Guy, vacation in Hawaii, baseball, and
eating his favorite ice cream-cookie dough.
Magda Jurczuk is 13 years old, lives in Northbrook with her dog, attends Wood Oaks, and is a future GBN
Spartan that likes Free best. Outside of the pool she enjoys shopping at Northbrook Court, tennis, listening to
96.3, and watching The Hills. Magda’s favorite movie is Walk to Remember.
